[00:35:56] <FatPhil> Anyone watch "The Feed"?
[00:36:25] <Runaway1956> Only when I open the door to feed the horde of cats that the wife keeps around
[00:36:31] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Largest Galaxy Ever Discovered Died Fast - https://sylnt.us - André-the-Galaxy
[00:37:04] <FatPhil> Just seen E01, and it's kinda a long-form Black Mirror (borrows quite a lot from one BM ep in particular - /the complete history of you/ - one of my faves)

[00:55:42] <FatPhil> one of the theoretically pedestrian streets in town has just had a couple of concrete pidgeons plonked into it so that cars physically can't go through.
[00:56:12] <FatPhil> tada! 2 bimma drivers decided that those pidgeons now signified parking places.
[00:56:50] <FatPhil> I may have accidentally clonked their wing mirrors with my rucksack as I walked past them
[00:57:00] <FatPhil> possibly 8 or 9 times.
[02:34:12] <Bytram> What an interesting movie! Brigitte Bardot was certainly a looker, but she had some acting chops as well! Had never seen any of her works before. Now have an idea why she gained such fame.

[09:16:06] <SemperOSS> I just saw the headline "Highest Recorded Temperatures in Antarctica Announced: Up to 67.6 F", which immediately got me thinking (believe me, a VERY unpleasant experience) as I come from a part of the world where Fahrenheit temperatures has been abandoned, thus causing me the headache of subtracting, dividing and multiplying, giving me 19.777777777777777777777777777777777777777…, which I magnanimously round to 19.77777777777777777777
[09:16:07] <SemperOSS> 7777777777777777778.
[09:17:23] <SemperOSS> Could we, non-Fahrenheit people perchance ask our great editors to also provide Celsius temperatures in the headlines, please?

[13:27:10] <SemperOSS> janrinok, this was on the SN website — do we have pure bot submissions there? (Asking for a friend, obviously, as I should know better. ;-)
[13:27:15] <SemperOSS> )
[13:47:15] <janrinok> we have stories that are collected or processed by bots but, as far as I know, there is currently a human involved in the selection of which stories that the bots collect become submissions. The bots of course cannot tell a good story from a bad one and as Arthur collects over 300 stories a day it would simply swamp the submissions if there was no human in the selection process.
[13:50:55] <Bytram> SemperOSS: !! Long time no see! Hope all is well... and, well, OOPS!. I completely blew it in not thinking of adding the temp in C to the headline (and could prolly have somehow worked it into the story, too)
[14:09:21] <janrinok> SemperOSS, all submissions are processed by an editor into stories - it is a human error. There is no way of directly submitting stories using software that I am aware off.
[14:24:30] <SemperOSS> Bytram, hi. I was out walking on the beach, so hope you're still lurking around here.
[14:25:00] <SemperOSS> It is one of the worst storms of the last century, apparently.
[14:26:31] <janrinok> Not too bad here, it is stormy but we are on the edge of it, others further north will be getting it far worse than we are - but not a day for going outside unless one really has to...
[14:29:11] <Bytram> SemperOSS: No, I'm not here any more.
[14:29:21] <Bytram> janrinok: present sent.
[14:29:26] <Bytram> ;)

[14:29:35] <SemperOSS> Drat, I was looking forward to saying hi to you :-(
[14:30:33] <Bytram> But *that* present was not as recent as *this* present, which of course, has also just passed! I can't seem to keep up!

[14:31:09] * Bytram totters around quietly right behind SemperOSS so I can't be seen

[14:34:05] <Bytram> 42.
[14:34:30] <SemperOSS> Ooh, that bad. Are you sure I know the question?
[14:34:44] <Bytram> Huh?
[14:34:54] <SemperOSS> Exactly! Huh.

[14:35:13] <Bytram> cf: "The Nine Billion Names of God"
[14:35:48] <Bytram> kind of early in the day to get all existential!

[14:40:07] <Bytram> So sorry for the last part! It has been something over 4 decades!
[14:40:25] <janrinok> you don't look a day over 60...
[14:40:42] <Bytram> OTOH, I'm sure it is not SO bad that it was utterly unintelligible, I hope!
[14:40:52] <Bytram> janrinok: let's not rush things, shall we?
[14:40:53] <SemperOSS> About the same for me, apart from a few trips around the place.
[14:40:58] <janrinok> whereas I, on the other hand, look much older
[14:40:59] <FatPhil> uber alles it wasn't so bad
[14:41:47] <SemperOSS> I could actually understand it, which either means that both of us are way out or that it was good enough ;-)
[14:41:54] * janrinok bursts into song having just read the words 'Uber Alles'
[14:42:57] * SemperOSS plugs his ears
[14:43:22] <Bytram> SemperOSS: As for Danish, the best explanation I can give is an analogy. I know the people in the deep southern US speak English, but their drawl is so thick, it can make it hard for me to understand. When I listed to dutch and pretend it is German spoken by a southerner, a surprising amount of the info makes it through because of the language's common backgrounds.

[14:45:11] <SemperOSS> I had a run-in with a north-west Norwegian First Officer on a survey ship some time back and his Norwegian was beyond anyone's ken … and his English worse
[14:45:12] <Bytram> Nice chatting with you!

[14:46:17] <SemperOSS> I'm a bit busy these days where I rarely am completely sure of what timezone I should abide by
[14:47:03] <SemperOSS> Have a good day.
[14:47:06] <Bytram> Germans are so precise in their diction, I have to get 'em to read it Schnell! Schnell! so that enough of the words get slurred that the similarity gets through... and even then, it's only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time that they get it without explanation!
[14:47:20] <Bytram> thanks, you too!
[15:36:45] <FatPhil> precise in their diction?
