[00:17:33] <carny> they tried to censor him too
[00:57:55] <FatPhil> Yeah, when he was doing everything right, fucking CCP shut him down using a very big hammer.
[00:58:18] <FatPhil> Some people are saying that china's handling this well, I have no idea where they got that idea from.
[00:58:44] <FatPhil> I still don't believe a single statistic coming out from official sources.
[00:59:42] <FatPhil> Not enough noise in the signal, looks faked (google "Benford's Law", for example, even though this data is cooked in a different way)
[01:02:53] <FatPhil> we have friends with family in the wuhan region, but they're not so internet connected, so we can't get the inside skinny.

[08:35:16] <FatPhil> carny: fixing the ratio is hard to distinguish from fixing the growth rate, so it makes little sense in a context of them clearly fixing numbers to claim that it's one of the derived properties they're fixing rather than the other.
[08:38:59] <FatPhil> questions, questions, ... If the incinerators are reportedly running non-stop at capacity, and can cope with 200 bodies a day, why's the reported death rate still only in the 70s?

[09:24:43] <FatPhil> this is why all software should come with source, the sloppiness could have been spotted much earlier.
[09:25:21] <FatPhil> if there's any security in the source, then you're doing security wrong, and probably that means there's no security even in the source.

[09:36:09] <janrinok> I've got no problem with that as long as it shows verifiable information. But there is too much speculation and trolling on the 'webs' to be reporting it all. We are a discussion site rather than a news site.
[09:36:59] <FatPhil> carny: oh, we don't have electronic voting machines. if you turn up in person to the polling station, you vote on paper.

[09:46:19] <janrinok> ... not sure what that is related to
[09:50:28] <janrinok> carny, we have discussed the coronavirus topic (29 Jan) and it received 84 comments. There were 3 other topics that day that received even more comments. Nobody is underestimating the potential of a coronavirus pandemic, and we understand the ramifications of such an even if it were to occur. But it is not the most important issue that the majority of our community are currently discussing.
[09:52:12] <janrinok> When there are significant changes that affect the majority of our community then we will probably report those changes and discuss it again. Until then we will continue to watch the reporting and look at the submissions that we receive to form the basis of our story selection each day.
[09:53:17] <janrinok> If the submissions contain anything new - other than changes to simple statistics - then it will be reviewed by the editors and processed accordingly
[09:54:38] <janrinok> You can use your journal if you wish to discuss it more frequently

[15:40:09] <FatPhil> but the trailing 3 words of that are redundant
[15:40:24] <Runaway1956> THAT might make sense. As the sentence exists in TFS, it makes no sense.
[15:40:42] <Runaway1956> And, I'm not stooping to reading TFA.
[15:43:29] * Runaway1956 wonders if he should go to bed, or sit and wobble while pretending he is not tired
[15:44:47] <Bytram> Runaway1956: Monitoring air quality in urban areas can be very important due to [pollution generated in] urban areas.
[15:45:26] <Runaway1956> That makes sense Bytram. Did you go to TFA to get that?

[15:52:31] * Bytram has spent far too many years reviewing specifications and documents and programs... filling in what was *meant* versus what was "actually provided". It's generally not enough to just report "this is wrong"; better to report what is wrong and suggest a solution.
[15:55:29] <FatPhil> a huge chunk of what passes through our hands recently has been academic theses and papers, the number of times we have to fix not just spelling/grammar but also logic is terrible.
[15:55:50] <Bytram> nod nod
[15:55:52] <FatPhil> sometimes I think "these fuckers don't deserve their degrees"!
[15:56:53] <Runaway1956> Now, now, FatPhil - they paid good bribe money for those degrees.
[15:57:11] <Bytram> It is sad, but I can rarely read through an entire journal article without encountering spelling and grammar mistakes... and I am far from being a "subject matter expert" on any of them!
[15:59:01] <AndyTheAbsurd> It's never enough to report "this is wrong" - always also report in what way it is wrong.
[15:59:27] <FatPhil> what's wrong with it? it makes no bloody sense!
[15:59:29] <AndyTheAbsurd> "Value X in report Y is wrong." "Okay, what should it be and how do you know it should be that?"
[15:59:58] <FatPhil> however, providing the two most likely competing interpretations for them to chose the one they really meant is usually the best solution.

[16:35:10] <Bytram> Which actually shows a breakdown at an interface. Ideally, QA/test helps provide tools that development can run so that *they* can assess the state of their programming. It should NOT be the case that a new release is provided to QA/test who alone performs the testing. Get the feedback as early in the development process as possible!
