[00:00:03] <Deucalion> I have seen many
[00:00:05] <carny> i hope this doesn't end up with us not being able to talk to russian people online
[00:00:35] <FatPhil> Dafoe: 10/10; Pattinson7/10; Sound guy 7/10; Visuals guy 7/10; Script guy 1/10.
[00:01:50] <FatPhil> (by which I mean screenplay)
[00:03:45] <Deucalion> carny, they are russian, the populace will ignore it and devise a route out of the box, generally the populace pay lip service to the dictats, their just Putin posturing. Like he wants to be another N Korea... all alone... perhaps he does... a little fiefdom.... oh god, now I'm worried
[00:04:34] <Deucalion> Not seen it FatPhil but I heard it has poor scriptwriting :D
[00:05:05] <FatPhil> Deucalion: weird and wonderful
[00:05:21] <FatPhil> definitely weird, but definitely wonderful
[00:06:11] <FatPhil> I've always loved dafoe, and this is pretty much the most amazing role he's ever been in.
[00:07:26] <Deucalion> And when has Dafoe never hit 10/10? Think he bubbled up in my conscious mind in The English Patient... that was an epic film just for the cinematography and music alone.
[00:08:06] <Deucalion> Watched it more recently and thought the acting a bit wooden but the cinematography and music was still top notch
[00:08:55] <FatPhil> we expected it to be a shit movie, so got ourselves pretty boosted for it, and had top-ups too. But I was honestly in tears at (more than) one point.
[00:09:49] <Deucalion> A 1/10 script would lose me about 20mins in
[00:10:02] <FatPhil> it lost me in 5 minutes
[00:10:32] <FatPhil> however, I watched all of Independence Day, so I stayed with it
[00:10:40] <FatPhil> worth it
[00:10:56] <Deucalion> Worked through the pain :D
[00:11:10] <FatPhil> glad I have 400W on the main speakers and 150W on the sub. The sound is powerful
[00:11:32] <FatPhil> within 15 minutes, I was hooked.
[00:13:02] <Deucalion> JFC how big is your viewing room.... a fucking football pitch? But in any case, it doesn't matter how may Watts you have, it needs more cowbell, everything is better with more cowbell.
[00:14:17] <FatPhil> no idea what you're talking about https://www.youtube.com
[00:16:40] <FatPhil> 's my bedroom. We have a ~46" telly about 3m away from us.
[00:19:30] <FatPhil> this is the loudest we've played any movie, I just knew it would be good.
[00:20:32] <Deucalion> 1st SNL - SoylentNewsLive... we'd so rock a crap amateur band. 2nd the cowbell guy, imagine it's before picking and eating shrooms was illegal and you did and you are the cowbell guy on stage, all kinds of bizarre shit happening to you, imagine the focus on the cow bell, all that would exist is the cow bell and saucer eyes. At least that's how I imagine it would be.
[00:21:04] <FatPhil> wassa tldr?
[00:21:22] <Deucalion> cool
[00:21:23] <FatPhil> id you miss the bit where I said I'd been drinking?
[00:22:23] <Deucalion> You got time to read it, just close one eye, it'll stop spiralling then
[00:25:40] <FatPhil> not cyclops drunk. ust lazy
[00:26:02] <FatPhil> oh, rf kbd drops keys, it's not just me
[00:26:12] <Deucalion> sure
[00:26:24] <Deucalion> :P
[00:26:35] <FatPhil> the weird thing is that it normally drops 2 keys back-to-back, dropping one is odd
[00:27:12] <Cascade> It also dropped the shift key :)
[00:27:43] <FatPhil> no, that's my right little finger.
[00:28:02] <Deucalion> Batteries, couldn't cope with 2 keys at once for capital
[00:28:06] <Cascade> For the capital J
[00:29:30] <FatPhil> not sure which shifted character it dropped - I don't remember caring that much about capitals
[00:29:50] <Deucalion> Obit FatPhil: was last seen shouting "I'm fine, only had a couple, just testing a theory" while waking into deep river in spate with a large lead weight in the shape of a chicken glued to his head. He was a brilliant guy and will be missed.
[00:30:13] <Deucalion> I sear my keyboard dropped the l there
[00:30:14] <FatPhil> That's /The Lighthouse/!
[00:30:19] <Deucalion> swear
[00:30:35] <Deucalion> You fucking infected me with the dropped keys virus
[00:31:25] * Deucalion pivots to writing movie scripts
[00:31:31] <FatPhil> Nah, this 'acme' (no joke, that's the brand) kbd, is fucking terrible. However, it's the cheapest wireless kbd/mouse combo available. so I bought it.
[00:32:31] <Deucalion> Well if you're going for generic I'd say ACME is a brilliant marketing choice as a brand. meep meep
[00:32:59] <Cascade> But it will also turn on you
[00:33:38] * FatPhil runs into a rockface
[00:34:24] <AzumaHazuki> Acme, lol
[00:34:32] <AzumaHazuki> it's going to explode on you you know
[00:35:25] <Deucalion> But it'll only explode at the wrong time when you're away from it and it'll do no damage.
[00:35:47] <Cascade> Better than Samsung I guess
[00:36:02] * Deucalion builds a bridge for FatPhil... dare to cross?
[00:40:19] <Deucalion> That's right Cascade all Samsung devices burst into flames with no notice. Or wait, was it they specified a certain Wh capacity battery for one device that at the time could not actually be built reliably, the battery manufacturer made it, Samsung squueeeezed it into the Note. The cells started failing... just a QA and design fail on one product.
[00:42:01] <Cascade> 'one'
[00:45:51] <Deucalion> how many was it Cascade? And how many other manufacturers also deployed similar cells that failed just as dramatically but didn't get the mnedia all het up?
[00:47:38] <Deucalion> From my own experience two others also had similar inflagrations around the same time but no publicity... and that was just devices I came across in the course of my work,
[00:47:42] <Cascade> Wait, so was it one QA failure at samsung or was it a bunch of manufacturers?
[00:49:41] * Cascade jiggles the juggs into maximum sardonics
[00:50:33] <FatPhil> Cascade: don't insult samsung.
[00:50:56] <Cascade> Everyone else was doing it. I just wanted to be popular!
[00:50:57] <FatPhil> only those who've workedfor samsung can insult samsung
[00:51:09] <FatPhil> fuck samsung
[00:51:14] <Cascade> Sounds like gatekeeping
[00:51:39] <FatPhil> i was a linux kernel developer for samsung.
[00:51:55] <FatPhil> they insisted that I used a windows machine
[00:51:55] <Deucalion> It was a design fail. The product met the design. The design was such that it lead to incursion of the cathode and anode in the battery due to deposits. QA test to the design specs. The cell manufacturer efed up and then Samsung efed up in using the cell. There were others.
[00:52:22] * Deucalion sees no juggs
[00:53:07] <FatPhil> no fakin - akme brand confirmed: http://theanna.org
[00:53:43] <FatPhil> it took me 9 months to get the job at samsung - I quit after 6 weeks.
[00:54:16] <Cascade> Sweet. I'm in a screenshot. I'm famous!
[00:54:38] <Deucalion> it was a learning experience I guess is the best you can take from that FatPhil
[00:55:05] <Deucalion> Or blah blah the grass isn't always greener or some such trite bullshit
[00:56:22] <carny> FatPhil: nice what kernel stuff did you do?
[00:57:25] -!- guy has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[00:59:59] <FatPhil> touchscreen driver initially, but I became kernel maintainer for a few years.

[21:50:32] <carny> Runaway1956: didn't you just have a lightning strike take out some of your hardware a few days ago?
[21:51:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> think that was me
[21:52:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> i'm enjoying runaway's leftovers from that storm today
[21:54:05] <Runaway1956> carny we send all of our bad weather east, so that Buzzard can enjoy it
[21:54:25] <carny> that seems nice
[21:54:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> he waits until i have a fishing trip planned too
[21:55:07] <Runaway1956> It's called "paying it forward" - if Dallas didn't send us their weather, we wouldn't have any for Buzzard
[21:56:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> man, i needa get the big boat going. only needs a steering cable and a 2x12 stuffed up in the transom. both require pulling the motor though and it's not gonna happen until we get something resembling a chain hoist rigged up.
[21:56:46] <Runaway1956> Why don't you just go down to Home Depot?
[21:57:01] <Runaway1956> You can hire four or five midget Mexicans to do the heavy work.
[21:57:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> tn's mexicans all have good jobs and don't need to hang out at home depot cause nobody here wants to work.
[21:57:41] * TheMightyBuzzard isn't kidding
[21:58:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> you literally can not find day labor in TN. not even for $20/hr.
[21:58:37] <Runaway1956> I could become a migrant for those wages
[21:59:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> too late, we're done with the french drain. no more shoveling hard pan clay down in a ten foot ditch to be done.
[21:59:49] <Runaway1956> I'd have gone with a Bolivian drain, but everyone has their personal preferences
[21:59:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> how are you at drywall?
[22:00:05] <Runaway1956> drywall sucks
[22:00:17] <Runaway1956> you need extra-dry humor to deal with it
[22:00:27] <Runaway1956> or, extra-dry hummus
[22:00:53] <TheMightyBuzzard> i'm good at it, i just ain't as fast as a crew of drywall guys. not even close.
[22:01:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> i get too ocd about my cuts and then again over the taping and bedding.
[22:01:29] <Runaway1956> I tried a set of those stilts once - broke more stuff than the kids could
[22:02:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> nice. breaking stuff is fun and manly.
[22:02:29] <Runaway1956> I may just fall back into bed for awhile
[22:02:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> enjoy, i opted for more coffee instead of a nap today. irish though since i'm taking a day off from church work.
[22:03:00] <Runaway1956> Oh - check your cmos batteries - I had to check one last night
[22:03:11] <Runaway1956> damned thing was as corroded as many car batteries
[22:03:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> ha
[22:03:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> i dusted my desktop a week or so ago. all's good.
[22:03:53] <Runaway1956> Solder on a new ground wire, put a new battery in, and it should be good until it ain't no good
[22:03:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> no swollen caps or anything
[22:04:08] <Runaway1956> Nahhh, nothing I could see
[22:04:28] <Runaway1956> just a cheap brand of battery falling apart
[22:04:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> bought this motherboard specifically cause it had extremely long lasting caps as one of its selling points.
[22:05:57] <Runaway1956> later

[22:16:53] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Galactic Cosmic Ray Model Works without Physics, and That is Bad - https://sylnt.us - starting-over
[22:26:53] <TheMightyBuzzard> me too. if i didn't already have more than i'd like on my plate, i'd fork it.
[22:28:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya know, we got a bunch of oss-lovin types here at SN. we could prolly organize a serious fork of it.
[22:30:08] <AzumaHazuki> there's no EOL for LXDE as far as I know. LXQt is not ready to replace it though, and GTK3 has been a Mongolian butter-fried clusterfuck from day 1
[22:37:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> yup
[22:39:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> worst comes to worst though, just drop back to openbox and mix-n-match utilities. maybe xfdesktop as a DE if nothing better can be found.
[22:39:47] <AzumaHazuki> yeah...i cut my teeth on Fluxbox rather than a DE, so it won't be unfamiliar. Ye gods above, that was over 15 years ago. Half a lifetime
[22:42:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod. config files for changing settings aren't any stranger to me either. about the only thing i like from a DE is the desktop icons and easy wallpaper switching.
[22:42:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> i can do it the hard way though if the alternative is gtk3 or qt
[22:43:47] <AzumaHazuki> Qt doesn't seem *so* bad by comparison. I don't know WTF GTK3's issue is though, but it always feels slow and ick
[22:44:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> might even take the opportunity to try out e16
[22:44:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod. i just dislike qt's aesthetics mostly.
[22:45:05] <AzumaHazuki> it kind of feels like Linux peaked around the 2012 as far as the GUI goes
[22:51:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> something like. possibly earlier. gtk2 may have been a bit ate up from some standpoints but it wasn't bloated as shit, dumbed down to mac levels, or ugly as homemade soap.
[23:01:54] <carny> what do you guys think about xfce?
[23:07:26] <AzumaHazuki> it's the sanest implementation of gtk3
[23:07:38] <AzumaHazuki> i like it, but except for a few annoyances LXDE does what i want better
[23:08:11] <AzumaHazuki> =submit https://www.cbsnews.com from the pain-points dept.
[23:08:21] <systemd> Submitting "Rwanda makes its own morphine while U.S. awash with opioids"...
[23:08:43] <systemd> ✓ Sub-ccess! "Rwanda Makes its Own Morphine While U.S. Awash With Opioids" (73 paragraphs) -> https://soylentnews.org
[23:19:42] <TheMightyBuzzard> carny, what she said pretty much. it's still gtk3 though, so it annoys me to use even pieces of it.
[23:21:13] <carny> about the only desktop thing i care about is those little temporary popup notifications when an email comes in ;]
[23:22:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, i use conky for that. i keep counters of unread messages on each of my email accounts up there with drive space and temps and top cpu/ram hogs and shat.
[23:48:01] <AzumaHazuki> at this point a big problem is a lot of gtk3 themes don't work right with xfce's panel. they look...weird
[23:48:11] <AzumaHazuki> am going to try the mate themes with it and see what happens
[23:54:13] <Deucalion> Never had much luck mixing and matching components from different DEs - always ends up an ugly mess. I think I've kinda acccepted it's a case of pick your least worse poison and work around it's foibles. Mate used to be quite lightweight but seems to have got middleage bloat now :(
[23:54:43] <AzumaHazuki> gtk3 again
[23:54:56] <AzumaHazuki> it was fine when it was a straight fork of gnome 2.x
[23:56:25] * Deucalion detects rose tinted spectacles.... gnome 2.x looks rosy!
[23:56:41] <AzumaHazuki> it wasn't that great, but it was better
[23:57:45] <Deucalion> Cinnamon is snappy if you turn of all the animations and transitions. Probably gets more love than MATE being the primary DE of Mint dev focus.
[23:58:40] <AzumaHazuki> for some reason it never sat well with me. nemo is ugly and unconfigurable, and a lot of the applets just seem beta-quality, even in 4.x
[23:59:04] <Deucalion> Seems fine on my lowly i3-2something laptop from ~10yrs ago
