[00:01:01] <AndyTheAbsurd> #submit https://hackaday.com
[00:01:01] <MrPlow> Submitting. There is a mandatory delay, please be patient.
[00:01:26] <MrPlow> Submission successful. https://soylentnews.org
[00:01:32] <AndyTheAbsurd> I figure the eds can toss it if they don't like the idea of running another story about it.
[00:07:34] <Deucalion> Submit as you like, the editorial team will progress or not. I thought the whole systemd click bait died out then I read some vague notion of systemd controlling users' homes too... it sounds like clickbait but the thing has gone from a new init solution to all problems (no-one ever had) should be consumed by systemd. If we have more detail then great.. roll the controversy lets discuss the (de)merits. What next systemd-telemetryd?
[00:09:32] <AzumaHazuki> systemd is doing too much at once and much too opaque. it's not modular or auditible in any way, it ignores the Unix philosophy, it introduces deliberate fragility, etc
[00:10:12] <AzumaHazuki> fucking binary logs...godsdammit, when the machine pukes, the human is the debugger. output needs to be in human-readable format
[00:14:26] <Deucalion> AzumaHazuki, you are right. Unfortunately the majority of users don't know any different... if it installs and things seem to work OK why bother to even understand how shit works? Computing devices of all form factors are commodity items now, if they break... toss in trash get a new one. Potting shed is not stupid in that regard as much as it may irk us.
[00:16:21] <Deucalion> We can rail against it all we like, meanwhile all the main linux distro branches lap it up. It's progress I'm told. ~sigh~
[00:20:42] <AzumaHazuki> eh...it's innovation in a sense. innovation is 1) often confused with progress and 2) often held to be a good thing in itself
[00:21:00] <AzumaHazuki> thankfully the BSDs are immune to this crap and the good distros make it a point to stay away anyway
[00:25:06] * Deucalion shares a half empty beaker of cynicism with AzumaHazuki
[00:25:34] * AzumaHazuki takes a long, deep pull and shivers...
[00:25:40] <AzumaHazuki> thaaaat's the stuff
[00:35:16] * Deucalion summons a magical unicorn to poop in the vicinity..... and there it's all OK again. The entire populace of the world sighed in relief and stopped beating the shit out of each other, and forgot about greed, jealousy, theft, murder. Next thing I know... I'm waking up in my own bed with the alarm bleeping telling me I need to get back to making someone else more rich. :/
[00:35:52] <AzumaHazuki> magical unicorns mostly seem to generate fat sweaty neckbeards in funny hats with unfunny ideas...
[00:42:22] <Deucalion> That's the nature of magical unicorns. Feel free to summon your own perfect cure beast. I'll be out back euthanasing the unicorn for not being accepted by you.
[00:42:36] * Deucalion waits
[01:05:36] <chromas> systemd may not align with the eunuch's philosophy, but it integrates just fine into gnu

[18:22:41] <chromas> heh
[18:27:56] <janrinok> hi chromas
[18:28:10] <chromas> hi
[18:28:47] <chromas> I noticed that while the "a" was decapped in that title, "around" was also. Decapitations all around
[18:29:24] <janrinok> which bot is that?
[18:29:33] * Bytram fixed those
[18:30:15] * janrinok things Bytram didn't fix them all
[18:30:36] <Bytram> all three were either articles or prepositions or linking verbs which do not add materially to the headline... well, hmmm, maybe "around" should have remained capitalized
[18:30:55] <janrinok> lol - yeah, but apart from that it was OK
[18:31:12] <Bytram> in general, if I can remove a word, then it need not be capitalized... at least that is the approach that I have been using
[18:31:49] <janrinok> I just let title() do what it thinks it should and be damned
[18:32:16] <Bytram> Oh, in that one, I added the journal reference, and elided a couple paragraphs to help us stay within fair use
[18:32:30] * Bytram uses the plain vanilla editor interface
[18:32:40] <janrinok> although I've correct storybot5 to fix the apostrophe uppercase problem
[18:32:45] <Bytram> yays
[18:32:59] * janrinok thinks he has, anyway
[18:33:37] <janrinok> yeah, some stories are so short there isn't much that we can throw away
[18:34:50] <Bytram> I have seen that. In that case I either try to (1) find another source I can use or, sadly, not use the submission. In my mind, it is not worth the risk
[18:35:10] * Bytram lobs a (2) in there somewhere
[18:35:35] <Bytram> brb, making a meal
[18:35:56] <janrinok> OK, I'll follow your lead

[20:48:22] <chromas> Get yourself an expensive GE smart refrigerator and you too can buy $15 water filters for just $45 with built-in drm!
[20:55:38] <Bytram> Do it the old fashioned way? Save up ice from a lake in a large building, cover with sawdust for insulation, will keep until well into summer.
[20:56:22] <chromas> Does the lake have wifi?
[20:56:44] <chromas> Will it send a notification up to the cloud, which will send me an email when the ice is low?
[21:00:40] <Sulla> Yeah
[21:00:59] <Sulla> sometime around spring the clouds start sending blueish wet stuff at you as a notification
[21:01:42] <Bytram> sulla++ Great answer

[21:05:05] <Sulla> I find craigslist has good cheap newish stuff
[21:05:36] <Bytram> nod nod
[21:05:46] <Sulla> Russian Guyovich on craiglist in Portland has brand new 2-4k fridges that homedepot can't resell because they didn't fit in an install for 400 bucks

[21:06:55] <Bytram> from what I've read, though, it is becoming increasingly popular to do the deal at a police station. That way if the other party tries to pull a fast one with your money, or whatever, well... oops!
[21:07:44] <Sulla> Thats weird
[21:08:06] <Sulla> Only time someone tried that with me was telling me they would buy a gun cabinet for 60 bucks then showing up and telling me 10 tops
[21:08:15] <Sulla> so I threw it in a dumpster infront of him with my friends help
[21:08:33] <Sulla> I hate those people. If you want to negotiate don't tell me on the phone you are fine with the price
[21:08:34] <chromas> Then he got it back out for free
[21:08:41] <Sulla> Nope
[21:08:52] <Sulla> I made sure it did not survive
[21:09:04] <Sulla> Hope its a lesson
[21:09:24] <chromas> Was it made out of wood or something?
[21:09:31] <Sulla> Wood and glass
[21:09:40] <chromas> oh I guess you did say cabinet
[21:09:46] <chromas> I was picturing a safe
[21:10:03] <Sulla> I was leaving state the next day so I wasn't willing to look for another seller and nobody had even called whom i could give it to for free
[21:13:51] <Sulla> Had a done the deal at the police department, i probably would have had to ask them to help me throw it out. Perhaps one of them might have wanted it for free. So could have been easier
[21:15:23] <Sulla> the "pull a fast one" seems weird. In alaska ive never bought something where the other party counted the money, they just assumed I wasn't cheating them. And I used craigslist often
[21:18:09] <Bytram> "Bad actors" / "Bad news" tends to travel further and faster than "another deal went smoothly and all parties were happy with the outcome"

[21:25:51] <Sulla> Had to call the guy when I bought my dog because I shorted him a hundred and didn't notice until later that evening, was a pain because I had to drive 14 miles to pay him
[21:30:55] <chromas> Sounds like an expensive dog
[21:38:51] <Sulla> 650 for a purebred collie with papers, breeding rights, and medical certifications
[21:41:54] <pinchy> muh breedin rights
[21:42:28] <chromas> Imagine if some aliens came a long and started neutering everyone
[21:43:03] <chromas> And put cones on us so we can't lick our nonexistent balls
[21:44:00] <carny> what does breeding rights mean?
[21:44:27] <carny> if you don't pay for them you can't let your dog have puppies?
[21:45:09] <chromas> or maybe it proves it's a purebred
[21:45:21] <chromas> so you can breed it with other inbreds
[21:49:43] <Sulla> Didn't do much good, i spayed her anyways, but mostly i wanted the medical certs.
[21:50:24] <Sulla> The guy was just autistic about his dogs. 650 for a dog in the us with medical certs is pretty cheap, at least on the west coast
[21:50:38] <Sulla> i wanted to get a dog from the pound, but everything here is chihuhas and pits
[21:50:46] <Sulla> and Id prefer my kids not be mauled to death
[21:51:18] <Sulla> but genetically certified from having hip dysplacia and all that garbage, which will save me money in the long run
[21:52:48] <Sulla> After having a irish setter for 15 years with seizures i was willing to pay extra to avoid medical issues
