[00:23:47] <AndyTheAbsurd> dogdongle.fart.jpg.exe
[00:23:58] <Bytram> AndyTheAbsurd: ???
[00:24:15] <AndyTheAbsurd> that is the intended reaction, yes.
[00:24:53] <AndyTheAbsurd> How's $Bytram.location()?
[00:25:22] <Bytram> My first thought was that you somehow misplaced a dongle that was critical to something you were attempting to do. Then I saw the words "dog" and "fart" and came up with an entirely different [mis]conception!
[00:26:18] <Bytram> first day off in an exhausting stretch culminating with offsite training located ~100 miles (~90 minutes travel) each way yesterday.
[00:26:43] <Bytram> Mostly caught up on my sleep, especially thanks to a 90 minute nap this afternoon!
[00:26:53] * Bytram is starting to feel semi-human again.
[00:28:21] <Bytram> Thanks for asking! How are YOU doing?
[00:28:59] <AndyTheAbsurd> I'm good - getting ready to get hit by a hurricane, which happens on average once a year in my area.
[00:30:03] <AndyTheAbsurd> ...so people new to Florida freaking out, buying out all the bottled water and bread and eggs; people that have been here a while stocking up on beer and booze for their hurricane parties.
[00:31:09] <Bytram> We don't get them but once every decade or two in my area, and about every few years get tropical storm remanants.
[00:31:11] <Bytram> lol
[00:32:21] <Bytram> Canned goods, dry goods, water, camp stove, and a tarp; maybe a generator or large solar array if you want power during an extended outage.
[00:32:57] <AndyTheAbsurd> we stocked up on dry/canned goods over the weekend
[00:33:14] <Bytram> Now, when it comes to winter storms, we DO get our fair share and are not unaccustomed to power outages and being basically snowed-in for a day or two.
[00:33:19] <AndyTheAbsurd> and my wife's health situation says we're leaving the area in the event of an extended power outage.
[00:33:39] * Bytram remembers one snow storm that dropped over 30 inches of snow. That was VERY interesting.
[00:33:55] <Bytram> Best of luck to you, then!
[00:34:05] <AndyTheAbsurd> Thanks!
[00:35:02] <Bytram> Oh, and every few years or so we have a stretch where there will be about a week of temps in the minus teens.
[00:36:08] <Bytram> Can you power things off your vehicle in a pinch? How much juice do you need? (IOW, could you use an AC adapter connected to, say, the cigarette lighter socket?)
[00:36:31] <AndyTheAbsurd> that's "even if the plow comes by, you're still not going anywhere because the car won't start" weather.
[00:36:33] <Bytram> time to fix a quick bite to eat; back shortly
[00:37:07] <AndyTheAbsurd> It's not actually power that's *directly* a problem, it's that she needs a dialysis machine
[00:37:24] <Bytram> knock on wood, never had a problem with the car starting. Thinner oil for the winter, and heavy duty battery usually does fine.
[00:37:31] <Bytram> Oh? Oh. So sorry.
[00:37:56] <AndyTheAbsurd> which means medical supplies, clean water, and people who know how to read the instructions her kidney doctor has written up.

[00:39:56] <Bytram> And... in 10 hours there will be a new moon, with the attendant larger-than-normal high/low tides.
[00:40:37] <Bytram> https://www.nhc.noaa.gov
[00:45:40] <Bytram> Maybe make reservations for a room at a hotel near the "facility" for the next-scheduled appointment(s)?
[00:45:53] * Bytram feels helpless to help, but tries anyway
[00:46:23] <Bytram> this time for sure...
[00:46:37] * Bytram heads to the kitchen
[00:46:39] <Bytram> ak
[00:46:42] <Bytram> afk
[00:46:44] <AndyTheAbsurd> don't worry... we're not unless her regular center calls and says they're going to be closed and gives her a location to get to her for her next treatment, and they haven't done that (and probably won't)
[00:47:09] <Bytram> Oh goody! So *very* glad to hear that!
[00:48:17] <AndyTheAbsurd> when Irma came through last year they were just like "yeah we may have to get you in later than normal because getting here is gonna suck for everyone but still try to be here around your normal time" and I don't expect this year to be any different.

[02:50:32] <Sulla> well, aristarchus does it so i dont see why you cant
[02:54:21] <Bytram> Sulla: I have not seen any indication of ari doing sock modding
[02:56:08] <Sulla> i hereby apologise in public to aristarchus on this specific allegation
[02:56:41] <Bytram> I *have* seen AC posts that, by the style of writing, were most likely of his hand... especially when they wailed about a story submission not getting accepted.
[02:57:43] <Sulla> isnt that sockpuppeting? thats what i was referring to
[02:57:58] <Sulla> i may not understand the term correctly
[03:01:06] <Bytram> I could see how that might be considered sock puppeting, but what I was referring to was upmodding one's own comments (using an alternate nick) so as to counteract damage caused to one's karma for trolling, etc.
[03:01:33] <Sulla> blackberry++ name another phone i can drop on concrete daily
[03:01:33] <Bender> karma - blackberry: 2
[03:01:43] <Sulla> ah i had term wrong then
[03:01:54] <Bytram> We had a *severe* case of that for a while, but eventually "the birds came home to roost"
[03:02:06] <Bytram> not exactly, just a matter of degree.
[03:02:42] <Sulla> i figure trdt did it but they appear to be gone now
[03:04:04] <Bytram> if there were a whole cohort of alternate personas all upmodding and reinforcing statements by the progenitor and alternate nicks so as to give the impression of a large amount of support from multiple people, I would allow as to how that could be considered sockpuppeting.

[03:13:19] <Sulla> what is it about landlords that turns them into jerks? they have to have been normal at some point
[03:14:01] <Sulla> former coworker of mine had a payment plan set up with a landlord where he was paying back on two months of rent over a period of time after his kid had medical issues
[03:14:17] <Sulla> landlord died, kids took over property, demanded money immedietly or eviction
[03:22:43] <Bytram> sounds like the original landlord was just fine; it was the newly created ones that were lacking in people skills.
[03:23:50] * Bytram guess that the kIds only saw $$$ and probably saw the residents as something getting in the way of their being able to sell it off.
[03:25:47] <AzumaHazuki> there is a word that comes to mind in cases like this
[03:25:56] <AzumaHazuki> well, several words
[03:27:58] <Sulla> guy owed like 2k so i spotted the guy so him and his kids didn't get evicted. will give them longer to find hopefully not another shitlord
[03:28:57] <Sulla> i had a landlord in alaska. 650/mo everything included, cable, internet, elec, water, parking
[03:29:23] <Sulla> no security deposit, and when wife and i moved out he gave us a 2k moving gift to help us move to oregon

[03:49:05] <Sulla> yeah im sure im super annoying
[03:49:13] <Sulla> my phone keeps restarting
[03:49:35] <Sulla> maybe if hepititis didnt talk to me every time it happened id feel more pitty
[03:51:53] <Deucalion> Doesn't worry me. I have joins / parts suppressed on my bouncer so only see them when I'm actually here rather than pretending to be here.
[03:54:05] <Deucalion> I have absolutely no recommendations for hepatitis causing auditory hallucination.... I'm not a doctor.
[03:56:29] <Sulla> hepsateus
[03:56:41] <Sulla> telling me about the log
[03:56:44] <Deucalion> You meant Hephaestus?
[03:56:44] <AzumaHazuki> actual hepatitis...?
[03:56:55] <Sulla> i call it hepititis
[03:57:12] <AzumaHazuki> odd
[03:57:26] <Sulla> whwnever you log into editorial it bugs you
[03:57:55] <Deucalion> AzumaHazuki, I think we're talking about an irc service bot not an actual physical bug in the sweaty nether regions
[03:58:08] <Sulla> yeah
[03:58:27] <Deucalion> How does it bug you?
[03:58:32] <AzumaHazuki> ah, good to know
[03:58:44] <AzumaHazuki> also if your liver is sweaty, Joo Heff Problem
[03:59:24] <Sulla> front end truck rattle, if i confirm its not suspension, i can conclude it can be ignored?
[04:01:55] <Deucalion> OK, I'm not fucking psychic. Expand upon how the IRC services bot is pissing you off and I may fix it.... be all enigmatic... and there's zero chance of that occurring.. your move.
[04:02:17] <Sulla> i dont care to have it fixed
[04:02:28] <Sulla> its operating as it should
[04:02:44] <Sulla> when you join editorial it tells you there is a log you can go read
[04:02:56] <Sulla> depending on your irc client this will open up in a separate window
[04:03:37] <Deucalion> You wouldn't have given that much detail if you didn't care :P
[04:04:30] <Sulla> its something to bitch about and say things like "this hepititis is really annoying" "tired of it bothering me" "really wish this hepititis would go away" for fun
[04:04:43] <Sulla> dont want diligent SN staff wasting time on a joke complaint
[04:09:07] <Sulla> nick serve is the same way
[04:09:11] <Sulla> yellin at people all the time
[04:11:00] <Deucalion> If you think our bots are yelling at you then I'm the guy to fix that.
[04:12:31] <Sulla> well, if anyone else complains the answer is to get a better irc client
[04:12:35] <Sulla> and a bouncer
[04:12:45] <Sulla> i got a better irc client, now need a bouncer
[04:15:12] <Deucalion> ZNC or PsyBNC - I think ZNC is the only still maintained IRC bouncer... happy to be wrong
[04:16:10] <Sulla> ill check em out
[04:17:14] <Deucalion> I guess you are pissed of about hepatitis on entry announce message.... I'd agree - the log message could be in the channel topic not announced every time
[04:18:27] <Deucalion> btw AzumaHazuki glad to see you're still sucking oxygen.
[04:20:20] <Sulla> im not pissed i liked to be able to joke about calling it hepititis
[04:20:26] <Sulla> and demanding to know who nick serves
[04:21:24] <Sulla> who does nick serve!?
[04:23:29] <Deucalion> nickserves nick - just like 99.99999999% of the people you interact with everyday - greed, avarice and self serving smugness.... what less would you expect?
[04:25:22] <Sulla> the bastard
[04:28:30] <Sulla> after crawling around under my truck i have isolated the rattle to my front license plate mount. that was a huge waste of time
[04:28:53] <Deucalion> It's a bot created by a human, it's not a bastard it's a bot
[04:30:31] <Deucalion> Better than paying someone else to crawl around looking for a mysterious rattle unless your hourly rate is way higher than they charge you.
[04:31:25] <Sulla> in general i wont go to a mechanic unless its an electronic bug i cant trace
[04:34:18] <Deucalion> You can get tools for that... or a tinfoil hat and a distrust of life outside your bubble.
[04:35:14] <Sulla> ive slowly learned the other aspects of vehicle repairs, but im not knowledgable on the electronic side yet
[04:38:39] <Sulla> other than increasingly large donations and article submissions, is there anything SN needs?
[04:40:19] <Deucalion> Right now I would like you to /j #editorial and tell me the annoying yelling and client issues went away.
[04:44:25] <Sulla> looks good to me

[05:12:45] <Deucalion> Per your other question... what does SN need? It needs to evolve beyond reposting other media and find its own stories. That would blow this site out of the doldrum it is in. Investigative journalism. At the moment no-one gets paid here. The editors particularly work like dogs just to keep the SN frontpage articles flowing..... in their own time, after work, before work... this isn't sustainable, people need a life. When you ask "is there
[05:12:45] <Deucalion> anything SN needs?" I have to counter it with what do you want SN to be? Personally I would want it to be a deep diving investigative journalism source. What is your vision?

[05:27:06] <chromas> Deucalion: Is investigative journalism still legal though?
[05:35:36] <Deucalion> chromas, what is not illegal is legal where I am from, we legislate against shit that is detrimental to society not expect every action to require permission. Experiment at the edges is how we evolve our ken, restriction is... well let's just dig fields with our hands because we didn't invent steel yet... oh we did.
[05:37:47] <chromas> Oi! You got a loicense for that there poetic waxation there, lad?
[05:40:58] <Deucalion> There are other legal societal constructs that revolve around forbidding everything and allowing things one by one into statute....... that's a fucking anathema to me... laws or societal constructs have no business in that space.
[05:45:37] <Deucalion> Is investigative journalism still legal? Sure - well as long as it doesn't involve a computer or you traverse through the USA for the rest of your life. It's OK though the USA residents will be just fine once the govt fucks off.
[05:47:25] * Deucalion guesses not visiting the US anytime soon..... love you guys, not the govt, your hands to change it.

[12:38:33] <Bytram> AndyTheAbsurd: thanks for that... as it so happens, I *just* finished downloading it and, miracle of miracles, they actually put the updated hashes in the download.shtml file!
[12:40:54] <Bytram> the other major change I am seeing on the release notes page is:

[12:42:52] <Bytram> Unfortunately, I have 77 tabs open in 1 window and another 14 in an other... need to catch up on a few things before I give it a go.
[12:43:06] <chopchop1> 77 never forget
[12:44:54] <Bytram> chopchop1: hrm?
[12:51:52] <AndyTheAbsurd> is there actual state that you care about in any of those tabs? If not, just enable the "restore tabs on startup" option, close both windows, install update, start new version, get tabs back. Possibly uncheck that option, if it's not a thing you want regularly.
[13:00:54] <Bytram> have that enabled, and works like a charm when I close *one* window... but I also have TabMixPlus installed and ISTR that *all* tabs got restored to a single window. OTOH, that was prolly years ago and my recollection may be off. Then again, better safe than sorry and I usually like to let a new release "simmer" for a couple days for the initial bugs to get found and addressed, if any.
