[00:56:16] <Bender> karma - wind: 1
[01:01:11] <AzumaHazuki> i learned something this evening :) I learned that corded drills are awesome, Kreg jigs are awesome, and a pocket screw goes "brrrrt!" like an A10's howitzer when it hits home
[01:01:31] -!- Sulla has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[01:01:48] <chromas> tools++ kick ass
[01:01:48] <Bender> karma - tools: 2
[01:02:03] <chromas> Are you currently working on building a thing?
[01:02:12] <AzumaHazuki> yep :)
[01:02:56] <AzumaHazuki> i've made 30x23 2x4 rectangles. these will be the legs of a desk, and the top will be a panel if i can get nice boards and edge join them
[01:03:12] -!- Sulla [Sulla!~Sulla@bzevse-201-761-225-870.mycingular.net] has joined #Soylent
[01:03:31] <AzumaHazuki> the legs are...not square, exactly. i'll need to abuse the hell out of very coarse sandpaper to make them presentable. but that's what happens with cheap 2 x 4s
[01:04:29] <chromas> Noice
[01:04:40] <chromas> Well just call the imperfections Style
[01:04:59] <AzumaHazuki> thinking of a 48x29 top (close to phi/golden ratio). an inner panel of 1x4s, with an outer edge of 2x6
[01:06:03] <AzumaHazuki> 6x 1x4s 37" wide will make a 37x18x.75 panel. i can then join that to a frame of 2x6, which are 5.5" wide, for the final sizing.
[01:09:46] -!- Sulla has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[01:18:05] -!- Sulla [Sulla!~Sulla@h-83-92-68-69.hsd3.or.comcast.net] has joined #Soylent
[01:37:08] <Sulla> interested in how it turns out
[01:40:26] <Sulla> renovating kitchen, all "new" appliances, building my own cabinets, island, have to move a wall. lots of fun diy
[01:41:54] <Sulla> found a place in portland that buys the mis-fitting appliances from home depot/lowes. got a brand new kitchenaid oven, retail 2200, for 200 bucks
[01:43:49] -!- arti|work [arti|work!~textual@fhv-836-375-856-960.socal.res.rr.com] has joined #Soylent
[01:44:44] <AzumaHazuki> i have very little money, no real workspace, and not too many tools. whatever i do is going to be rough and ready by definition, and rather amateur
[01:44:59] <AzumaHazuki> but by Madokami I am going to make a desk and a table at the very least

[01:47:24] <Sulla> you do the best with what you have. ive been going over the early stuff i built and its very depressing
[01:47:48] <Sulla> king bed frame i built like a decade ago was very rough, been reworking it to make it not a shame to look at
[01:48:31] <Sulla> plus expensive tools dont make a good product, they just make it easier
[01:48:38] <Sulla> nothing beats time sweat and blood
[01:48:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> a circle saw that can do adjustable angles and a jig saw can take you a long way. won't be posh but between the two of them you can get some fairly nice looking pieces.
[01:49:29] <Sulla> when sanding with the grain dont let the sandpaper catch and pull up a 3in "sliver" and then drive it through your hand
[01:50:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> you can even do fancy joinery if you're careful and patient.

[05:37:59] <chromas> I didn't even know Ruby was still around. I thought everyone switch to node.js and go
[05:49:45] <fffe> how popular is actually go
[05:51:39] <chromas> it's got the hype
[05:51:47] <chromas> shirley it's more popular than ruby by now
[05:51:52] <chromas> but I dunno
[05:52:45] <fffe> i guess
[05:52:58] <fffe> i was playing around with it for a while few years ago, even bought a damn book
[05:53:18] <fffe> but dunno, didnt find it much fun
[05:53:26] <fffe> so went back to C on my personal projects
[05:54:00] <fffe> did some shit in go at job, but its proving to be a pain in the ass, since none of the other devs we employ ever knows it
[05:54:24] <fffe> so when that project needs updates, its always an annoyance
[05:55:09] <fffe> on the upside it does perform really good though
[05:56:50] <chromas> I tried Go but I was triggered by the forced K&R bracket style
[05:59:11] <fffe> hehe ye i guess its all pretty standardized in go
[06:00:18] <fffe> luckily its my preferred bracket style :)

[08:04:45] <FatPhil> Hey, internet people - are places' opening hours for all days shown for anyone anymore? e.g. https://www.facebook.com - all I get is today's hours, which is useless for planning a pubcrawl next week
[08:04:47] <upstart> ^ 03Live & Let Live
[08:05:43] <FatPhil> All my browser(s) show is Opens at 5:30 PM Closed Now
[08:06:29] <FatPhil> And no, I'm not logged in, because the most obvious reason
[08:08:34] <chromas> do they have a real web site?

[08:09:30] <chromas> if you click the See All it shows the full time range
[08:09:30] <Sulla> how many karma required to post JEs for new account
[08:09:42] <chromas> 5:30—11:00
[08:10:06] <chromas> Did you find a spam journal?
[08:10:40] <Sulla> no, im gonna make an account for ACs to post JEs that they feel were "suppressed"
[08:10:55] <FatPhil> chromas: that's not the pub we are interested in, that was an arbitrary example! (I used to live next door to that one)
[08:11:06] <Sulla> i figure it will fail hard, but was going to make an account and post a JE on its purpose and put the password in it
[08:11:09] <FatPhil> "See All" in the "about" box?
[08:11:35] <chromas> Yeah
[08:11:44] <chromas> or throw an /about/ in the url
[08:11:51] <FatPhil> I suspect this ain't gonna work: https://www.facebook.com
[08:11:52] <upstart> ^ 03Live & Let Live

[08:12:06] <chromas> You don't need all the parameters
[08:12:17] <FatPhil> ah, those "%xx" are clearly something json-like
[08:12:21] <chromas> https://www.facebook.com
[08:12:22] <upstart> ^ 03Live & Let Live
[08:13:11] <chromas> Sulla: sub stories from it. accepted subs get three karmas, I think
[08:13:56] <FatPhil> https://www.facebook.com only shows today's hours (I know that one has different sunday hours)
[08:13:57] <upstart> ^ 03Põhjala Tap Room
[08:13:59] <Sulla> i was considering just pulling an aristarchus and sockpuppeting it, but i have never done that before so no reason to start now
[08:14:08] <Sulla> guess ill find some good articles then
[08:15:09] <FatPhil> It used to show hours for every day, but about a week or two ago it started being absolutely useleses - progress!
[08:15:15] <FatPhil> buckfeta++
[08:15:15] <Bender> karma - buckfeta: 2
[08:16:24] <chromas> if you allow scripts from fbcdn you can get all the days with the little down arrow next to the time
[08:17:34] <chromas> and if you don't wanna, it's also in a json block within the page, so you can scrape that
[08:17:34] <Sulla> i dont have a valid email address thats not linked to me
[08:17:41] <Sulla> what tyranny is this soylent news
[08:17:55] <chromas> if you have a HoTMaiL account, you can create aliases
[08:18:46] <chromas> also you only need the email account long enough to verify the account, if you even need to verify it. I can't remember
[08:18:55] <FatPhil> Sulla: if you want a bouncer address, I can just stick you in my /etc/aliases
[08:19:17] <Sulla> yeah just give me anything so i can make this AC Journal Entry account
[08:19:35] <Sulla> guess i could SullaACFriend at protonmail
[08:19:41] <chromas> You can try without an email too
[08:19:57] <chromas> or just put in whatever. sulla@whitehouse.gov
[08:20:22] <chromas> although anyone using the account would be able to see the 'real' email address you use
[08:20:41] <Sulla> wouldnt it need to be accepted by that email or does verify not required?
[08:21:02] <FatPhil> unlike my /etc/aliases technique, which would be restricted to just me knowing it, wink wink
[08:21:16] <FatPhil> Hmmm,
[08:21:20] <FatPhil> I'm wondering
[08:21:37] <FatPhil> Could soylentnews itself offer this as a service
[08:21:59] <Sulla> how much do i need to donate for sulla@soylentnews.org
[08:22:12] <FatPhil> only those with admin rights would know where addresses bounce to
[08:23:01] <Sulla> same point i could just make it, verify, then change email to nonsense
[08:23:45] <Sulla> my goal was to have a discoverable account for SN regulars to log onto to post a JE of something they felt was rejected for no reason
[08:23:54] <Sulla> spambots wouldnt be smart enough to look for it
[08:24:12] <Sulla> might make the guy going at gaaark's throat have a method of venting as well
[08:24:41] <Sulla> if it fails (likely) then i can say i tried but people were jerks
[08:27:12] <chromas> someone'll change the password and that'll end it
[08:28:14] <Sulla> yeah
[08:28:21] <Sulla> wonder how long it will take though

[09:48:32] <Bytram> ~tell AzumaHazuki Good luck on your project! From personal experience, do not expect a 1x4 to actually measure 1" or 4" (!!!) Apparently that is the size of the rough-cut lumber before it gets "finished". Don't be surprised if things are 1/4" or more off compared to what was expected.
[09:53:46] <Bytram> Sulla: I appreciate the intent behind your suggestion for an AC journal, but if they want to post it in a journal, it's about as easy as we can make it to do from their own account... and is, in fact, recommended they do just that.

[22:52:40] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: o/
[22:52:47] <AzumaHazuki> o/
[22:53:04] <AzumaHazuki> got a little overtime :) 2 of the 3 main techs at the pharmacy are out, so...
[22:53:05] <Bytram> did you gt my msg wrt size of lumber?
[22:53:13] <AzumaHazuki> i don't think so, sorry...
[22:53:18] <Bytram> np
[22:53:46] <Bytram> from the painful voice of experience, a 1x4 is not necessarily 1"x4" when you measure it...
[22:54:09] <AzumaHazuki> ahh, yes.
[22:54:15] <Bytram> good
[22:54:30] <AzumaHazuki> well...what i made isn't quite square, and is going to take a lot of sanding with very very very coarse sandpaper to level out, but it's okay for the price
[22:54:32] <Bytram> IOW, you may need a few more pieces of wood than originally planned.
[22:54:40] <Bytram> nod nod
[22:54:46] <Bytram> rent a belt sander for a day?
[22:55:24] <Bytram> or, just put a sheet of good-quality plywood over the top.
[22:57:57] <AzumaHazuki> mweh, would rather make a proper panel for the top...
[22:58:14] <AzumaHazuki> "good quality plywood" almost sounds oxymoronic. and how well does it take stain?
[22:59:39] <Bytram> np
[22:59:58] <Bytram> then add several layers of polyeurethane for durability...
[23:00:10] <Bytram> many thin layers are better than a couple of thick ones.
[23:00:24] <AzumaHazuki> oh yeah, definitely. going to see if i can find a spray type for that though
[23:00:46] <Bytram> It would be called something like "finished plywood" or for cabinetry or somesuch
[23:01:42] * Bytram has no experience with spray poly, but for brushing it on, a "sponge brush" is much better than the standard bristle kind... no fiber "streaks"
[23:02:21] <FatPhil> chromas: "Estonians in Canada. One of the largest permanent Estonian community outside Estonia is in Canada with about 24,000 people (according to some sources up to 50,000 people). In the late 1940s and early 1950s, about 17,000 arrived in Canada, initially to Montreal."
[23:02:49] <Bytram> mon ami!
[23:03:48] <FatPhil> holy jesus, Lexx is so bad it's good!
[23:06:08] <Bytram> like... attack of the killer tomatoes bad?
[23:09:03] <FatPhil> still not seen that!
[23:09:28] <FatPhil> I think it's actually trying to be competent, which makes it all the more hilariously bad.
[23:11:20] <Bytram> #yt attack of the killer tomatoes
[23:12:04] <FatPhil> g/f's seen it, so not high on our priority list
[23:12:35] <Bytram> special effects are... especially bad!
[23:13:01] <FatPhil> We did see several Ed Woods, to make sure we ticked the "classics" box
[23:13:22] <FatPhil> and of course, /The Room/ (plus the documentary)
[23:13:43] <FatPhil> Tommy Wiseau was going to be at Tallinn Film festival this year, but he bailed last minute
[23:15:19] <Bytram> pardon my ignorance... Ed Wood?
[23:17:03] <Bytram> #yt spacex
[23:17:23] <Bytram> #g mrplow
[23:17:43] <Bytram> looks like mrplow has gone napping

[23:25:12] <Bytram> Oh! Yeah, that was pretty bad, too.
[23:25:22] <Bytram> thanks for that

[23:26:04] <FatPhil> possibly my favourite Depp movie (I hate Depp)
[23:26:23] <Bytram> btw, I'm seeing references to a potential SpaceX star hopper test sometime soon... anywhere from today up through next couple days.
[23:27:03] <Bytram> am coming up empty with twitter feed for elon and spacex as well as spaceflightnow.... any ideas of where else to look?
[23:27:30] * Bytram did not see that movie, but is reminded of edward scissorhands which I found to be much better than I had ever expected.

[23:32:43] <FatPhil> can't bring myself to see scissorhands, as I know I'll hate it with a mighty vengeance.
[23:33:00] <Sulla> i saw part of it once and decided it wasnt worth my time
[23:33:17] <Sulla> seinfeld episode about it was pretty good
[23:33:31] <Sulla> jusr watch that and say you have watched it
[23:33:39] <FatPhil> persuaded g/f to do a from-the-start Seinfeld watching!
[23:34:03] <FatPhil> not started it yet, but will soon, when we've emptied other queues
[23:34:08] <Sulla> bad idea
[23:34:50] <FatPhil> I've literally only seen one episode, twice. So hopefully it will be in part fresh.
[23:35:22] <FatPhil> seen a whole load of clips (e.g. double dipping) though.
[23:36:18] <Bytram> I've seen a few episodes of seinfeld and had a few chuckles, but never really "grabbed" me like it seemed to have done to so many others
[23:36:24] <Bytram> call it a meh+
[23:36:50] <FatPhil> yeah, we just need filler to watch while eating supper, doesn't have to be highbrow
[23:37:05] <Bytram> oh, in that case should be fine
[23:37:30] <FatPhil> it might be a bit "american", but in some ways that might enhance the chuckles.
