[06:27:42] <chromas> Why are you scamming me, Boylent Newds?
[07:36:48] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - ESA's Mars Rover has a Bummer of a Parachute Problem - http://sylnt.us - oh-chute!
[08:00:43] <FatPhil> last year I installed an interesting-sounding plugin for palemoon (ff fork).
[08:01:11] <janrinok> what does it ff do?
[08:01:20] <FatPhil> didn't see how to activate it. settings said it was installed correctly.
[08:02:01] <FatPhil> "removes overlays", things that cover teh whole webpage, so yuo can't read what you've just wasted time and bandwidth downloading.
[08:02:20] <janrinok> take my money - I want it!
[08:02:53] <FatPhil> did some weird accidental click with the mouse last night. this morning I notice palemoon has a new menu bar visible with one icon on it that I don't recognise
[08:03:08] <FatPhil> mouse over that icon - it's the overlay remover!
[08:03:41] <janrinok> can you work out the magic mouse click?
[08:04:25] <FatPhil> right click on one of the menus, where it shows you which of the bars are available, and I toggled one that I'd hidden as it had nothing on it.
[08:05:03] <janrinok> I'll search for it - is it called ff-fork or just fork?
[08:05:13] <FatPhil> It had apparently installed itself onto the "Navigation Toolbar".
[08:06:18] <FatPhil> the browser is called palemoon, and is a firefox fork, the plugin is called dismiss the overlay: https://github.com
[08:06:18] <upstart> ^ 03JustOff/dismiss-the-overlay
[08:07:31] <janrinok> yeah, I run palemoon - I just misinterpreted what you wrote before.
[08:11:30] <janrinok> not sure how to install it....
[08:15:38] <FatPhil> I did get it from the usual plugin repo
[08:15:55] <FatPhil> just search for overlay, there are a couple of related ones forked from teh same source
[08:17:32] <janrinok> success - I was looking at the github zip and scratching my head. Got it from the repo and no problems
[08:18:25] <janrinok> If it works as I understand it, it will very valuable when searching for possible submissions
[08:18:36] <janrinok> ty
[08:19:02] <FatPhil> As I said - I forgot I had it, I've been living without it for the last year because I couldn't work out how to invoke it!
[08:19:23] <FatPhil> I'm so pissed off with it I'm now tempted to uninstall it!
[08:19:30] <FatPhil> that'll teach it.
[08:19:33] <janrinok> lol
[08:19:54] <janrinok> I've prolly cheered it up by installing it though...
[08:20:15] <FatPhil> I did work around a few sites using adblock and class-based blocking rules
[08:20:49] <janrinok> I half-heartedly tried that and found that there are too many variations
[08:27:53] <janrinok> It does exactly what it says - thank you for pointing that one out to me.

[11:38:35] <AndyTheAbsurd> enh, I've been through hurricanes. 20 inches is a lot but if it's something that happens regularly somewhere, people build for it as best they can.
[11:38:37] <Bytram> all those look like great places to get your pores cleaned out.
[11:39:00] <Bytram> And instead of a towel, they carry around a snorkel and mask?
[11:39:41] <Bytram> 20" of rainfall is the *yearly* total for more than a few locations!
[11:43:19] <AndyTheAbsurd> It's like a decade's worth for the Atacama Desert

[11:43:33] <AndyTheAbsurd> But for Florida it's sometimes "Tuesday".
[11:43:41] <Bytram> rofl!
[11:44:01] <Bytram> seriously, have you *ever* experience 20" of rain in a single day?
[11:45:35] <AndyTheAbsurd> I think so, but I don't know exact totals. I was not kidding earlier. I have literally been in several hurricanes.
[11:46:04] <AndyTheAbsurd> Most recently Hurricane Irma, which came through Florida last year.
[11:46:53] <Bytram> I've been through a couple (few?) myself. Hurricane Gloria is the first one that comes to mind.

[11:52:49] <Bytram> Oh, and I also survived a snow storm that dropped over 30" of snow in one day.
[11:53:41] <Bytram> As for temps, I've been outside when it was -30F and over 100F, too. The Earth is an amazing place.
[11:54:07] <AndyTheAbsurd> I was in Boston for https://en.wikipedia.org's_Day_blizzard
[11:54:09] <upstart> ^ 031997 April Fool's Day blizzard - Wikipedia
[11:54:15] <AndyTheAbsurd> I can't match you on those temperatures, though.
[11:55:31] <Bytram> Was that the blizzard that made a mess of the Boston Marathon? I remember there was one time they had to plow the town common in Hopkinton, MA (the start of the race) because something like a foot of snow fell a few fays ahead of the race.
[11:55:48] <Bytram> s/fay/day/
[11:57:05] <AndyTheAbsurd> Don't think so; it would have been too early in the month for that.
[11:57:25] <Bytram> Doh. Clicky.
[12:00:44] <Bytram> Oh, now I remember. They had something like 3 feet of snow in Worcester. MA. Had a buddy who lived there at the time.
[12:05:21] <Bytram> welp, time for me to get ready for work.
[12:05:25] <Bytram> afk
[12:05:49] <Bytram> actually, may just head right out after I'm ready. Have a great day everyone!!!!

[12:33:50] <janrinok> bytram - ref those add-ons you suggested before. I cannot find any of them in the PM repos
[12:34:38] <janrinok> ah, they are really FF add-ons...
[12:35:13] <AndyTheAbsurd> Maybe Tobin angered JustOff enough that he didn't submit them to the PM add-ons site? ...can't say I blame JustOff.
[12:35:28] <janrinok> ... and some are not compatible with PM
[12:35:37] <janrinok> AndyTheAbsurd, quite possible.
[12:36:00] <AndyTheAbsurd> bytram did link a GitHub earlier; I'm sure I've still got it in my scrollback... want me to dig it out?
[12:36:31] <AndyTheAbsurd> too bad I did anyway: https://github.com
[12:36:32] <upstart> ^ 03JustOff/dismiss-the-overlay
[12:39:21] <janrinok> I've already got that one from FatPhil - downloaded it this am, and it works like a dream
[13:18:43] <AndyTheAbsurd> Here's an idea for a new moderation option (and I'm not sure it's a good one so I'm throwing it out there for the community to discuss): Flame Fanning, for people that respond to obvious flamebait, with a +0 modifier to the comment and a negative effect on the fanner's karma.

[16:01:15] <FatPhil> AndyTheAbsurd: interesting suggestion. The negative comment modifiers are far from perfect presently, but I think people have worked out their own meaning for the different categories.
[16:02:16] <FatPhil> e.g. "just plain stupid" -> "troll" for me, and "insulting" -> "flamebait".
[16:03:17] <FatPhil> so effectively the flames get the flamebait mod, which is a bit backwards.
