[02:17:12] <Bytram> FatPhil: as for "doubly-encoded utf8 mojibake"?? Huh? Do you mean something like what would come out if you did: utf8_encode( utf8_encode( $string ) ) ??
[02:19:19] <Bytram> I can't begin to imagine what that would look like, or how to detect it. Now, if I had examples of before and after the double encoding, I *might* be able to help you, but it looks like you found something that works for you, so I'm going to you are all set.

[10:02:02] <SemperOSS> FatPhil: I'll just stick to my Carolina Reaper sauce — I use Tabasco to soothe my palate after using it
[10:03:33] <SemperOSS> One of my friends had inadvertently rubbed his eyes with a slightly Tabascoed finger, causing much crying. Now his family has renamed Tabasco to Dad's Eyedrops
[10:04:00] <FatPhil> the habanero version of tabasco was pretty good, but they're all a bit vinegary for me.
[10:06:23] <SemperOSS> Oh, and re Tabasco "Buffalo" sauce — Where did the term Buffalo (Chicken) Wings come from? I have never seen a buffalo with wings and never heard about buffalo chickens
[10:07:02] <FatPhil> It's a place in NY
[10:07:35] <FatPhil> Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
[10:08:40] <SemperOSS> So, the etymology of the term is really chicken wings prepared to a Buffalo, NY recipe?
[10:09:31] <SemperOSS> It seems to have been involved in a cultural appropriation then with Kentucky Fried Chicken
[10:56:10] <AndyTheAbsurd> SemperOSS: yes, the original Buffalo wings recipe really was invented in Buffalo, NY.
[10:56:35] <AndyTheAbsurd> Also I may end up going to a buffalo ranch in NY (though not particularly near Buffalo) next week.

[11:30:43] <SemperOSS> AndyTheAbsurd: I guess none of the buffaloes will fly when you get to the ranch. I must say that the subject of the origins of Buffalo Wings has come up more than once when the little ones wanted KFC (not happening so much any more due to 1) age and 2) one has gone pescetarian). The subject did not garner sufficient interest to actually seek out and answer, so thanks to you and FatPhil.

[11:59:13] <FatPhil> I think I'll have lobster.
[11:59:21] <SemperOSS> The ways of the Catholic Church are mysterious
[11:59:39] <SemperOSS> FatPhil, I'll come. Thanks for the invitation
[11:59:59] <Bytram> FatPhil: A real lobster or those oversized crawdaddies they call lobster down in the south
[12:00:34] <FatPhil> I dunno, but I was happy to just order it and then just do a runner before the bill arrives.
[12:00:58] <SemperOSS> Ah, one of *those* lobsters
[12:01:01] <FatPhil> I'll identify as Catholic, and they can write it off as "charity"
[12:01:22] <Bytram> You better beware of a potential clawback on your bill

[12:06:27] <SemperOSS> A question: A friend of mine had money removed from her account through Paypal. She does not believe that her account has been hacked or that her phone (her choice for Paypal interactions) has been infected either. How is it possible to get money out of Paypal without authorisation? I thought all Paypal transactions were three-way, requiring user authentication/confirmation every time.
[12:11:59] <FatPhil> PayPal is to banking what Uber is to taxis. It's the new money-sharing economy.
[12:23:12] <AndyTheAbsurd> I've heard of many horror stories about people having a hard time getting PayPal to even acknowledge that there's a problem with an account...and that's before you get into how difficult it is to get them to actually RESOLVE a problem.
[12:23:30] <SemperOSS> FatPhil: Yes, but I would also be a bit surprised to see an Uber transaction if I hadn't travelled anywhere.
[12:25:44] <SemperOSS> They have agreed to return the money within the next ten days, which left my friend in a bad state. After talking to her bank, she got them to waive some old charges, which sufficed to keep her going until Paypal sorts her money out.

[12:57:31] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - AT&T Lays Off Thousands After Nabbing Billions In Tax Breaks And Regulatory Favors - http://sylnt.us - business-as-usual
[13:27:03] <Bytram> SemperOSS: I have no personal experience with PayPal, but from what I've read, best practice is to leave as little money as possible with them. Regularly transfer funds out of your PayPal account, into your associated account (preferably used *only* for that purpose with a financial institution other than your usual one), and then transfer *those* funds to your regular account. That way there is no way for PayPal to "clawback" funds
[13:27:03] <Bytram> from your associated account.
[13:31:01] <chromas> Hey now, those claws made Elon Musk rich. Why do you hate SpaceX?
[13:34:33] <SemperOSS> Paypal had apparently taken them out of her associated bank account. But I still thought (naïve me) Paypal required specific authorisation for each transaction on the account. Whenever I buy stuff through Paypal, I have to log in to Paypal (unless already logged in) and *accept* the transaction.
[13:37:05] <SemperOSS> How can someone just pilfer from the account? A credit card I can understand, where you just need the card details and make a cardholder-not-present transaction, but Paypal? Do they have an accountholder-not-present mode? I think not.
