[00:11:13] <FatPhil> Can someone help me with American, I only speak English. What does "profiled" mean in "Protesters claim man arrested in Oberlin bakery incident was profiled"?
[00:11:39] <FatPhil> Cops asked him to stand side-ways on, so they could sketch him from the side?
[00:14:06] <FatPhil> or he was recompiled with the -pg flag, run ten times, and then his slowest parts identified.
[00:15:29] <chromas> Yes. The last one
[00:16:23] <chromas> The patrons were recompiled with the -pg flag, run ten times, then the blackest parts were identified
[00:16:46] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Yucatán Predicted to be Self-Sufficient in Renewable Energy in 3–4 Years - http://sylnt.us - what-a-"bright"-idea!
[01:25:19] <Runaway1956> FatPhil "profiled" means "everyone hates niggas, Brotha!"
[01:29:29] <Bytram> FatPhil: That has an element of being an ideomatic expression. To my understanding, to profile someone, is indeed analogous to profiling a program. What does it do? Where does it spend most of its time? Is it wasting computes doing something inefficiently? How much memory is it using? How much I/O is it doing? Is the I/O continuous or "bursty"?
[01:30:11] <Bytram> Each of those factors serve to give glimpse into, or maybe an abstraction of, what the program is and how it works.
[01:30:40] * TheMightyBuzzard spends large amounts of time in idle mode at the lake
[01:31:47] <Bytram> Profiling people, OTOH, would be along the lines of: Are they poor or wealthy? Are they hard-working or a laze-about? What nationality are they? What are their political views? What religion do they belong to? What is their sexual orientation? What is their gender? How old are they?
[01:32:50] <Bytram> Using that information as a guide, one could make generalizations of what one would anticipate they might do in a given situation (to be gracious) or are they "good" or "bad" people (to be less than gracious).
[01:34:04] <Bytram> If you are noticing similarities to questions that may pertain to prejudices, I would not say you were the only one. As a guide, they may offer some insight, but as hard-and-fast rules, they tend to come up short.
[01:34:54] <Bytram> There's a lot of hand-waving in there, and I do not at all claim for that to be a definitive explanation, but is my best attempt at explaining what I understand profiling to be. Hope that helps!??
[01:39:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> it also means filed by someone who files things as a career
[01:40:53] <TheMightyBuzzard> do note this could easily be either a secretary or machinist since file has multiple meanings.

[07:16:21] <FatPhil> damn, beat me to it
[07:48:38] <SemperOSS> Late to the party again, sleeping the sleep of the righteous and the innocent. I just thought about how we are not seeing a proper proliferation of prophylactic profiling but rather a sad state of supercilious stereotyping.
[08:10:32] <FatPhil> yeah, the profiling question - what does one actually *do*, in order to "profile" someone? Do you make them answer a questionaire?
[08:11:38] <FatPhil> Is the headline just trying to say "policeman acted in a way which made the onlookeers believe he was influenced by racist preconceptions"?
[08:11:45] <chromas> Yes
[08:12:24] <chromas> what was the headline?
[08:12:29] * chromas looks at the backlog
[08:12:48] <FatPhil> Is everyone who said to the cops present "he didn't do anything" guilty of giving false evidence to the police?
[08:12:48] <chromas> oh yeah
[08:13:48] <chromas> probably not unless they said it in an official setting
[08:14:16] * chromas wuz a good boi who dindu nuffin
[08:14:21] <FatPhil> I would say that communication with an official is an official setting.
[08:16:16] <FatPhil> Did you read the PDF accompanying that story? It was very interesting, it was my bedtime reading. Initially it's just legal jibberjabber, and then suddenly you realise everything's for a reason, and you can see the strategy not just the tactics.
[08:16:17] <chromas> racial profiling's usually used for stuff like 'random' selection of brown people for extra tsa screening or hooded individuals being followed around in stores

[08:17:27] <FatPhil> Nab an innocent bystander for the lulz?
[08:17:55] <chromas> but why did the shopkeeper restrain that particular person and phone the police? they were racially profiling
[08:18:19] <FatPhil> no, they were jumping on the guy who shoved 2 bottles of win[sic] into his jacket.
[08:19:14] <chromas> and they wouldn't have seen it if they hadn't been directing undue attention to him
[08:19:23] <FatPhil> https://www.cleveland19.com
[08:19:24] <upstart> ^ 03Protesters claim man arrested in Oberlin bakery incident was profiled
[08:20:00] <FatPhil> oooooh, good point.
[08:20:06] <chromas> this_is_america.mp4
[08:21:54] <FatPhil> (that story contains the "win" typo, purely as proof I dindu no bullshittin')
[08:23:08] <FatPhil> I genuinely got interested in the story. Why would Oberlin get so involved with coming to the aid of this student (laying on a limousine for him at one stage), so I was googling to see if he was anyone important.
[08:23:56] <FatPhil> all I got was the robbery-related stories, so I'm none the wiser.
[08:25:39] <chromas> See, it's most likely that the employee was lying about the bottles. it was a frame-up
[08:26:08] <chromas> then the poice planted the fake id
[08:27:42] <chromas> "They claim that the bakery has a history of discrimination, and were encouraging people to shop elsewhere."
[08:27:49] <chromas> But for some reason they kept coming back to it
[08:32:06] <FatPhil> because it has no security cameras
[08:32:43] <FatPhil> "Though there were no surveillance cameras at the time inside Gibson’s Bakery, body camera footage from Oberlin police captured what happened shortly after the incident on November 2016."
[08:33:10] <chromas> that's what makes it so easy for the employees to make up stories about stolen bottles
[08:33:42] <FatPhil> That's why I love Russian insurance companies - they demand dashcams nowadays.
[08:34:39] <FatPhil> 4 minutes in, owner says "there's so much student theft"... http://www.youtube.com
[08:34:41] <upstart> ^ 03Oberlin Police body cam video (Gibson's Bakery) ( https://www.youtube.com )
[08:36:24] <FatPhil> You would expect them to have put in CCTV by now, though.
[08:49:24] <FatPhil> Holy jesus, just watching the bodycam footage, and the story gets even more interesting!

[09:06:41] <FatPhil> When does Miranda need to be done? I guess it's different from state to state. In the UK it's at the point of arrest, but it seems like at least in some states it's only at the point of interrogation.
[09:09:03] <chromas> Shouldn't they've checked the bottles for prints?
[09:14:25] <FatPhil> paraphrasing: [shopkeep] here are the two bottles, you gonna need fingerprints on those. [cop] nah, picks up one bottle with bare hands. [keep] are you sure, cos there's an awful lot of students who seem to be saying otherwise. [cop] we're not going by what they're saying, we'll be charging him with robbery. [keep] >big sigh< they're gonna trash us. [cop] sighs, yeeeeeaaaa
[09:16:30] <FatPhil> cop knew his cam was on his the whole time. An odd choice of (in)action, I agree.
[09:17:32] <FatPhil> Maybe it's such a common offence, they consider it all just handle-turning. Everyone knows they did it, they'll get a guilty either by plea or verdict, no need to waste time on evidence.
[09:19:04] <FatPhil> Reading the PDF it was clear that the authorities and the lawyers had everything very much under control, there was never any risk of an upset.
[09:21:49] <FatPhil> there was even some show-boating - "we got you by the balls. and we know it. and you know it. you're fucked" kind of smirky teacher-to-child bits.

[12:02:55] <FatPhil> A few years ago, they had students saying they wanted finals cancelled because they were protesting minority men being shot by police in nearby Cleveland; in Dec. of 2015, the school’s black student union published 14 pages of racial accusations against the school with 58 demands to fix them; and the school had students thinking that the sushi in their cafeteria was “cultural appropriation” and unfi
[12:03:01] <FatPhil> t for eating because of that.
[12:04:03] <FatPhil> Damn, I remember hearing about that final one at the time. Oberlin apparently has got quite a reputation.
[12:05:07] <AndyTheAbsurd> I gotta admit that I don't get the "cultural appropriation" thing in most cases.
[12:07:30] <AndyTheAbsurd> Some of them (mostly where white people are making huge profits off of art/music created by non-whites while giving them zero credit) I do understand - but in most cases it seems ridiculous to get mad over.
[12:10:26] <FatPhil> I'm pretty much anti the whole concept of cultural appropriation.
[12:11:51] <FatPhil> Have I culturally appropriated from the Finns as I have a sauna in my flat?
[12:27:40] <SemperOSS> Nah, not when the infidels at Marvel have culturally appropriated all of the Norse mythology ... With what's left, we are, literally, in God's hands — the Finns (isn't it really the Sames?) will forgive you and considered flatter-copy instead.

[17:46:37] <Bytram> now my stomach is grumbling... time to go make something to put into it. back soonish
[17:46:47] <janrinok> bon appetit
[17:46:52] <cmn32480> enjoy!

[17:47:04] <Bytram> ciao for now.
[17:47:06] <Bytram> afk
[17:47:08] <cmn32480> that'd be horsey
[17:48:34] <janrinok> looks like FatPhil has gone back into the sauna - perhaps he is becoming ThinPhil?
[17:48:52] <cmn32480> more liekly to the bar
[17:49:27] <janrinok> I thought he said he was doing both and taking a beer back into the sauna? ^
[17:50:01] <cmn32480> he is, apparently, a much smarter man than I
[17:50:11] <janrinok> and me as well, it seems
[17:51:18] <cmn32480> hows the construction coming... other than that pesky electrical issue
[17:52:34] <janrinok> well the two doorways have now been widened to take the wheelchair with ease - you could probably get a small car through then at the moment. Frames should go in tomorrow, and S is due back on Friday for the weekend, before going into hospital for a month
[17:53:11] <cmn32480> adn that is when you get to really start playing wiht the wrecking ball?
[17:53:26] <cmn32480> or are you just sipping tea and watching them do the owrk?
[17:53:32] <cmn32480> while enjoying your weeds?
[17:53:38] <janrinok> yep, but most of the additional work should be outside - unless they have poor ball control
[17:53:59] <cmn32480> that's how I ended up with 3 kids...
[17:54:42] <janrinok> they are going to be running a bulldozer over much of the garden so I am not worrying about the state of the garden at the moment. The roses are looking good though
[17:55:18] <janrinok> I would have said that was excellent ball control - now if it had been with someone other than your wife .....
[17:55:42] <janrinok> how is J by the way?
[17:56:01] <cmn32480> we are doing well

[17:57:27] <cmn32480> tends to be a tad busy
[17:57:40] <cmn32480> 7 hours and 10 stitches later... we came home
[17:57:46] <FatPhil> I was in the kitchen, getting a selection of lithuanian meats, grek olives, english and dutch cheeses, and various other shit for my evening repast.
[17:57:55] <janrinok> of course, it is full of kids needing stitches. The drunks and battle weary can't get a look-in
[17:58:02] <FatPhil> too late for a sauna
[17:58:14] <janrinok> just the beer then FatPhil ?
[17:58:24] <FatPhil> beer later, certainly
[17:58:29] <janrinok> good man
[17:58:36] <cmn32480> it was full of some kids who needed way more than stitches unfortunately
[17:59:07] <janrinok> sounds a bit dire3
[17:59:24] <cmn32480> the one kid with the mountain biking accident was not a pretty picture
[17:59:39] <janrinok> ouch

[18:01:49] <AndyTheAbsurd> ...now I'm wondering where the fuck cmn32480 lives... I think I used to know, though.

[18:02:54] <cmn32480> 30 kilometers
[18:02:57] <cmn32480> roughly
[18:03:05] <AndyTheAbsurd> I'm going to a place north of Baltimore on the 22nd. It's so far north of Baltimore that it's also north of NYC.
[18:03:11] <cmn32480> and most places north of Baltimore are fgar nicer
[18:03:16] <janrinok> so south of York?

[18:05:17] <Bytram> AndyTheAbsurd: I could prolly meet you if I drove for about half a day and my car was up to it and I had the time off

[18:17:36] <AndyTheAbsurd> (I grew up in upstate NY; it's a VERY weird place.)
[18:18:03] <Bytram> full of local place names that serve to distinguish visitors from the locals

[18:22:40] <cmn32480> but it is nice moving between the states without having to show a passport
[18:23:16] <Bytram> Names like Fishkill (-kill means stream or river) and Watervliet

[18:26:54] <janrinok> for a fleeting moment, maybe
[18:26:58] <AndyTheAbsurd> janrinok: I actually grew up in Albany county, so I actually do know all the ones we've discussed so far.

[18:37:06] <Bytram> nah, finished that about a week ago.
[18:38:27] <Bytram> Upon reflection, 5 pounds (~2.2 kg) of potatoes was not nearly enough... should prolly have used at least 8 pounds.
[18:38:35] <janrinok> lol
[18:41:12] <Bytram> 4+ kg ham shoulder, 1 kg carrots, 3 large onions, the aforementioned potatoes, a few herbs / spices... and a good long simmer on the stove was all it took. Wished I had a kg of green beans to toss in, too!
[18:41:34] <janrinok> plenty of stock for a good gravy too
