[01:06:37] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - AMD Plans to Stack DRAM and SRAM on Top of its Future Processors - http://sylnt.us - top-that!
[01:08:43] <AzumaHazuki> from the L4$ dept?
[01:10:51] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: not sure I understand the reference
[01:11:24] <Bytram> to me L4 is a place in orbital mechanics where a body tends to remain [mostly] stationary
[01:11:34] <Bytram> or L5 or...
[01:11:39] <AzumaHazuki> level 4 cache
[01:11:44] <Bytram> aka Lagrange points, IRC
[01:11:50] <Bytram> ooooh. got it.
[01:12:00] <AzumaHazuki> technically Broadwell-C kiiiinda did it already?
[01:12:09] <Bytram> beats me
[01:12:17] <AzumaHazuki> this is interesting though. does this imply machines that don't need system DRAM?
[01:12:57] <Bytram> prolly different refrsh rates
[01:13:17] <Bytram> otoh, what about HBM?
[01:13:29] <Bytram> #g HBM memory
[01:13:30] <MrPlow> https://en.wikipedia.org - "The second generation of High Bandwidth Memory, HBM 2, also specifies up to eight dies per stack and doubles pin transfer rates up to 2 ..."
[01:13:51] <Bytram> if not the same thing, then prolly kissing cousins, at least
[01:25:16] <AzumaHazuki> interesting what's coming out of AMD recently. i wonder how long i'll be alive to see this...
[01:27:22] <Bytram> was just thinking a day or two go that Intel has fallen way behind its old page... AMD seems to have made tremendous strides these past few years. ryzen, threadripper, new dGPUs, and all at what seems to be a smaller process node than what intel offers.
[01:28:12] <Bytram> Intel always seems to be 1 or 2 process nodes ahead of everyone else, and now it looks like they have fallen *behind* AMD
[01:28:22] <Bytram> s/seems/seemed/
[01:28:56] <Bytram> is getting late and I think I'll call it a night.

[08:17:05] <FatPhil> Stacked memory is straight out of the mobile arena, it's just desktops catching up.
[08:17:22] <FatPhil> I'm guessing because the thermal dissipation issues are greater.
[08:17:37] <chromas> I wish desktops would catch up with mobile screen resolutions
[08:17:41] <chromas> and LED displays
[08:17:55] <FatPhil> and power consumption!
[08:18:16] <chromas> True. Why can't my cpu clock down to 200MHz when idle?
[08:19:56] <FatPhil> I think i have a lappy chip in my "desktop" (a mini box thing), and that steps down to 500 before off, which is better than a kick in the teeth.
[08:20:53] <FatPhil> I wish I could tell the kernel "prefer to run 3ms at 500MHz than 1ms at 1500MHz", as I'm sure my fan wouldn't need to spin up as often if it did that.
[08:23:58] <chromas> Time to build your own cpu governor

[09:54:34] <FatPhil> don't yikesaflops come before zoinksaflops?
[10:20:51] <boru> WRT power savings, your desktop can, indeed, do that, just as well as your phone.
[10:21:21] <boru> If you've compiled support for cpufreqd (iirc on Linux), then you can select which profile you'd prefer.

[10:47:36] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Prenatal Exposure to Testosterone May Harm Female Fraternal Twins - http://sylnt.us - post-hoc-ergo-propter-hoc
[10:50:28] <FatPhil> boru - it's all futile, I have the kswapd0 @ 100% bug in my distro's kernel, and I can no longer be arsed to go off reservation w.r.t. core software components.
[10:51:08] <FatPhil> I suspect that just killing all browsers before bed would help the fucker stop spinning up
[10:52:21] <boru> Are you forever married to this distro, or would you consider installing a Real Operating System™ like BSD?
[10:53:22] <FatPhil> I kinda like GNU tools, so prefer GNU/linux
[10:53:32] <boru> Which tools?
[10:54:11] <FatPhil> all the day-to-day boring ones, which have 200 switches in GNU, and 5 switches in BSD
[10:54:38] <FatPhil> Sure, GNU's gone a bit over-the-top, but I kinda like some of them, so have to take them all.
[10:55:14] <boru> You'd probably find that they are mostly available on BSD.
[10:55:26] <boru> Whether it's via the coreutils package/port, or something else.

[11:06:49] <FatPhil> if there's a BSD for headless RasPi, I'm up for giving it a try.

[11:07:12] <boru> Which raspberry poo do you have?
[11:09:09] <FatPhil> B-ish, old old

[11:58:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> dev vm is going to be using apache 2.4 but not a recent version. fairly old version of perl as well. mod_perl will be both a years old version and the latest because they're the same thing.

[16:46:39] <FatPhil> boru: so the 13.0 images are just weekly builds? I'm more of a stable kind of guy, so 12 seems best.
[16:54:38] <boru> Yeah, 13.0 is -CURRENT, and the snapshots are taken at regular intervals, but people try to snapshot when -CURRENT isn't broken.
[16:54:59] <boru> I use -RELEASE on all of my machines. -STABLE would probably be fine, though.
[16:55:17] <boru> -RELEASE only gets critical security and stability fixes.
[16:55:39] <boru> Whereas the guarantee you get with -STABLE is a stable ABI, but other minor fixes.
[16:56:36] <boru> And once you install, `freebsd-update fetch install && pkg update`; the latter will bootstrap pkg-ng, and then you can install packages to your heart's content.
[16:56:52] <boru> Or compile from ports, if you really want to experience that pain first hand on a raspberry poo.
[16:57:28] <boru> That said, you _can_ do what I do, and cross compile elsewhere, and host a local PACKAGESITE if you decide the default options for packages is insufficient for your needs; many ways to skin this particular cat.
