[00:28:44] <upstart> ^ 03We Are Doomed*
[00:29:03] <fyngyrz> read the verbiage :)
[00:32:56] * boru chuckles.
[00:33:17] <fyngyrz> thought you might like that one
[00:34:55] <boru> In my travels as an amateur astronomer, I've come across plenty of the too-much-lsd crowd who would regale me of tales of chemtrails and 'weird lights they saw in the sky' stories.
[00:35:14] <boru> Long story short, when you think you're pretty rural for observing, it's not rural _enough_.
[00:37:02] <fyngyrz> ha yes
[00:37:19] <fyngyrz> lemme see if I can find something
[00:37:59] <AzumaHazuki> odd how UFO sightings have gone down since the advent of personal recording devices
[00:38:09] <fyngyrz> https://www.youtube.com
[00:38:10] <upstart> ^ 03Sprinkler Rainbow Conspiracy
[00:38:14] <fyngyrz> make sure the sound is up
[00:39:12] <boru> I'm not sure if you're familiar with atmospheric optic displays, I believe they're pretty common in the US, but I used to run an outreach program back in Ireland, at a local library. Every time we had parhelia, or circum-zenithal arcs as a result of ice crystal formation, my phone wouldn't stop ringing from farmers armed to the teeth protecting their cattle and seeing weird lights in 'broad daylight'.
[00:39:45] <fyngyrz> yeah, but... rainbows! WHAT IS OOZING OUT OF OUR GROUND????
[00:39:54] <boru> For reference: http://atoptics.co.uk
[00:39:55] <upstart> ^ 03Frequent Halos
[00:40:00] <fyngyrz> yeah, I've seen various interesting optics...
[00:40:02] <boru> Heh, yeah, I believe it man.
[00:40:44] <fyngyrz> AH: Also fewer bogfootzez
[00:40:47] <boru> AzumaHazuki; ever more interesting that, in the era of phenomenal quality optics on mobile phones these days, that people still opt to video 'UFOs' with terrible magnetic tape camcorders.
[00:41:07] <AzumaHazuki> right?
[00:41:31] <boru> Atoptics are a very common "it's aliens!" cause these days.
[00:41:36] * AzumaHazuki has only seen sundogs once, and it was glorious. something about the way the sky looked was numinous
[00:41:47] <fyngyrz> well... but the magnetic FIELDS are the voices of ghosts! What if you MISSED THAT?
[00:41:49] <boru> From light pillars to parhelia, but also launcher exhausts.
[00:42:15] * fyngyrz sometimes has to shower to get the stupid off
[00:42:23] <boru> Indeed. And they're quite common. It's just weirdos like me that look at the sun that see them.
[00:44:47] <boru> I've got some images on another server that's down at the moment, but when I resurrect it, I'll show you some really great displays I've seen around the world, from Siberia, to Svalbard, to Ireland, to Norway, to Germany.
[00:45:19] <boru> Including some you only get to see at certain latitudes.
[00:47:12] <boru> Light pillars are a really common 'UFO' phenomenon: http://atoptics.co.uk
[00:47:13] <upstart> ^ 03Light Pillars - Lights radiating from the zenith
[00:47:38] <AzumaHazuki> wooo...12 days of a 14 day work streak down, and doing well
[00:48:07] <AzumaHazuki> caffeine is a hell of a drug
[00:48:29] <boru> 'Doing well' -- "I only see the black dots during the evenings"
[00:48:37] <fyngyrz> haha
[00:49:23] <boru> I did a 55 day stint at work last year. It wasn't a pleasant time.
[00:50:08] <boru> Most of which were 18 hour days.
[00:50:18] <AzumaHazuki> i'm actually really enjoying this. i got hired as a pharmacy tech in late December, and it's starting to become almost all muscle memory
[00:50:30] <boru> For 14 days in a row, though?
[00:50:34] <AzumaHazuki> ...aaaaalso i've been training *other people who started with me.*
[00:50:58] <AzumaHazuki> yes, it's not bad at all. just 8 hours, and there's even a lunch break in the middle.
[00:51:27] <boru> L-lunch? Is that a French word?
[00:51:36] <AzumaHazuki> saxon i believe...
[00:51:43] <boru> I know, silly.
[00:51:46] <fyngyrz> she's talking about rockets, right?
[00:51:54] <AzumaHazuki> only on taco tuesday :v
[00:52:01] <fyngyrz> 10...9... ... 1... LUNCH!
[00:52:25] <boru> I would get in a jab at NASA there, but I won't...
[00:52:28] <fyngyrz> or, as it used to be in the video game industry:
[00:52:47] <fyngyrz> 10...9... ... 1... there will be an indeterminate number of hours hold until lunch
[00:53:05] <fyngyrz> while mission control has a meeting
[00:53:19] <boru> Or rather 10...9...8...10...10...10...10...1! *screaming*
[00:53:28] <fyngyrz> lol!
[00:54:22] <fyngyrz> Breaking: Roger Stone shares image of his judge in crosshairs
[00:54:26] <fyngyrz> that man is NOT smart
[00:55:25] <boru> I can't say I know who that is.
[00:55:35] <fyngyrz> you're better off
[00:55:55] <boru> Something over stateside?
[00:56:11] <fyngyrz> yup
[00:56:17] * boru nods.
[00:56:51] <fyngyrz> "Roger Stone, a longtime Republican operative and adviser to President Donald Trump who was charged with lying to Congress, posted a photo Monday on Instagram of a judge presiding over his case in which she appears to be next to a crosshairs symbol."
[00:57:28] <AzumaHazuki> boy, these Nixonian ratfuckers never learn do they?
[00:57:53] <AzumaHazuki> stone actually has a Nixon tattoo I'm told. the mind boggles.
[00:57:59] <fyngyrz> Every day, in every way, my jaw drops further
[00:58:29] <AzumaHazuki> at this point the biggest surprise is that i can still BE surprised by any of this shit
[00:58:44] <fyngyrz> apparently, there is no bottom
[00:59:18] <fyngyrz> who was it who said "the difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits"?
[00:59:27] <fyngyrz> was that Albert?
[00:59:37] <boru> Paraphrasing him.
[00:59:38] <fyngyrz> #g genius has limits
[00:59:39] <MrPlow> https://quoteinvestigator.com - "Jul 28, 2014 ... The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. Yet, no one provides any justification for crediting the brilliant scientist ..."
[00:59:57] <boru> #g einstein stupidity universe
[00:59:57] <MrPlow> https://quoteinvestigator.com - "May 4, 2010 ... Einstein has proved that the universe is limited. ... But what is much more widespread than the actual stupidity is the playing stupid, turning off ..."
[01:00:13] <boru> Hmm, that's not it.
[01:00:21] <boru> #g einstein not sure about the universe
[01:00:22] <MrPlow> https://www.telegraph.co.uk - "Mar 30, 2012 ... Albert Einstein's theory about how fast the universe is expanding has ... the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."
[01:00:41] <AzumaHazuki> "You can't believe everything you read on the internet, mostly because there's no way to verify the sources" -- Abraham Lincoln
[01:00:51] <fyngyrz> absolutedly
[01:01:13] <boru> Lincoln did have a lot to say about physics, indeed.
[01:01:32] <fyngyrz> he did some experimenting with bullets. Before OSHA
[01:02:03] <fyngyrz> didn't work out
[01:02:35] <AzumaHazuki> when all of this Trump and Trump-admin bullshit blows over, I want personal apologies from all his hellbound fanboys on SN. It'll never happen of course, but yeah...
[01:02:59] <fyngyrz> yeah, don't get too involved in hoping for what you'll never get
[01:04:17] <fyngyrz> they'll all be thumbing their armchair's arms and waving their beers arounds while threatening (un)civil war
[01:04:24] <fyngyrz> thumping, dammit
[01:04:38] <AzumaHazuki> i've lost all faith in humanity. never had much to begin with, but the last 2.5 years or so have torn it
[01:04:48] <fyngyrz> well, but you're human
[01:04:58] <fyngyrz> so there's a place to start
[01:05:01] <AzumaHazuki> it's a paradox, isn't it?
[01:05:16] <fyngyrz> a pair? Hell, there's at least three of us...
[01:05:29] <fyngyrz> My SO's in on this
[01:06:05] * fyngyrz tells secret: Doesn't have doctorate...
[01:06:51] * fyngyrz doesn't play one on the Internet, either
[01:07:07] <boru> I find people who threaten civil war, have never had the unfortunate experience of living through one.
[01:07:17] <fyngyrz> or even know WTF they're talking about
[01:07:33] <AzumaHazuki> see Runaway for an example
[01:07:40] <boru> Seems to be a common theme in the US, no offense intended. War is fine, so long as it's on someone else's doorstep.
[01:08:00] <fyngyrz> I think if you just say "you know, there will be no more beer if you do that" they'll settle right down
[01:08:05] <AzumaHazuki> that's been the US's MO since the Monroe Doctrine if not before
[01:08:09] <fyngyrz> yes
[01:08:21] <boru> I think there's a lot of manufactured outrage, as an outsider looking in.
[01:08:24] <AzumaHazuki> LOL, people like him would just say "fuck you I'll brew it myself." Sure. Enjoy yer terlet wine
[01:08:37] <fyngyrz> oh hey, speaking of... a funny. sec.
[01:10:29] <fyngyrz> http://dojang.com
[01:10:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> the monroe doctrine was a fine example of what happens when you consider only the greater good and not the lesser evil.
[01:11:17] <AzumaHazuki> fyngyrz: LOL. that metaphor is right on the nose
[01:11:25] <fyngyrz> heh heh
[01:12:36] <AzumaHazuki> SN has a couple of seriously titanium-skulled religious nuts. Freeman is some kind of JW-alike who thinks copypasta is a valid argument, and Bot...i think Bot is actually mentally ill. But his coherent arguments boil down to "Reality is Yahweh's VM"
[01:13:23] <AzumaHazuki> i've come to accept that some people are simply broken and can't human any more. maybe there's such a thing as a basilisk, a memetic kill agent
[01:13:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean it was obviously, objectively for the greater good. a lot more people were objectively better off for it than would have been otherwise. that doesn't take into account the evil done by it though.
[01:15:15] <fyngyrz> AH: A mietic cockatrix?
[01:15:29] <fyngyrz> mimetic, ffs
[01:15:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> bot's not mentally ill, he's taking the piss. it's an artificial persona.
[01:15:52] <fyngyrz> you hope
[01:16:07] <fyngyrz> just because YOU like to shitpost...
[01:16:10] <fyngyrz> :)
[01:16:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> i learned it elsewhere, so i'm by far not the only one.
[01:16:58] <fyngyrz> and now you're TRAPPED!
[01:17:14] <AzumaHazuki> fyngyrz: something like that, yes. something that nips in through the eyes and permanently flays the brain. Calvinism is one of these
[01:17:17] <TheMightyBuzzard> i've mostly been entirely earnest lately though.
[01:17:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> aside from the occasional joke
[01:17:38] <fyngyrz> the Mighty Earnest?
[01:17:51] <fyngyrz> Can I call you Earnie?
[01:18:01] <AzumaHazuki> my hypothesis is that if a meme or memeplex has the right combination of stickiness, seeming explanatory power, and fear-inducing behind it, it can permanently alter someone's thought patterns and perhaps even brain chemistry or structure
[01:18:10] * fyngyrz needs mor cofefee
[01:18:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> fyngyrz, https://www.youtube.com
[01:18:41] <upstart> ^ 03BEST OF ERNEST P. WORRELL THANK YOU JIM VARNEY RIP
[01:18:42] <fyngyrz> too deep. Stupid people are vulnerable to idiocy, that's all
[01:18:48] <fyngyrz> lol!
[01:18:56] <AzumaHazuki> it doesn't seem like idiocy though, and some very very smart people fall victim
[01:19:11] <fyngyrz> smart is like a pie. You get some slices... you don't get others
[01:19:12] <AzumaHazuki> i've read some extremely intelligent Christian apologists. like Cornelius van Til for example
[01:19:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> AzumaHazuki, intelligence is no protection against being dead wrong
[01:20:24] <fyngyrz> AH: mostly they go straight to C.S. Lewis, and that guys was a barely0-disguised idiot
[01:20:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> being an argumentative bastard who's willing to be wrong PLUS intelligence is, but not intelligence alone.
[01:20:42] <AzumaHazuki> lol, CS Lewis
[01:20:47] * fyngyrz is the typo king today
[01:21:19] <fyngyrz> "Mere Christianity" - a true fumble of a work
[01:21:22] <AzumaHazuki> Lewis almost had the, pardon the choice of words here, critical "come to Jesus moment" once when he said something like "it is only God's goodness that makes worship of him even permissible let alone mandatory"
[01:22:15] <fyngyrz> AH: You know how Kindle ebook reader works?
[01:22:24] <AzumaHazuki> no idea, no
[01:22:26] <fyngyrz> ok
[01:22:43] <fyngyrz> well, you can make notes. When you do, other readers can see them if you make them public
[01:23:10] <AzumaHazuki> i had no idea
[01:23:11] <fyngyrz> I went thru Mere Christianity - and brutally annotated it :)
[01:23:31] <fyngyrz> high light a phase or whatever, and note appears
[01:23:49] <fyngyrz> sometimes I'm just mean
[01:23:54] <AzumaHazuki> i can't help but think the actual argumentation is window dressing for these people though, that they started with a conclusion and are just looking to bolster it
[01:23:59] * fyngyrz isn't particularly ashamed, either
[01:24:07] <fyngyrz> sure
[01:24:27] <AzumaHazuki> yeah CS Lewis is easy pickings. Plantinga and, to a lesser extent, Craig, are tougher. If only because you need a lot of inside baseball vocabulary to follow along
[01:24:33] <fyngyrz> I b'lieve the word you may be looking for is, for want of a better one, is "rationalization."
[01:25:02] <AzumaHazuki> Plantinga in particular is an odd case because he's actually done a lot of good work on warrant and epistemological justification outside the religious context...
[01:25:05] <fyngyrz> should be "irrationalization" though
[01:25:10] <AzumaHazuki> hah, yes
[01:25:25] * fyngyrz makes note
[01:25:51] <AzumaHazuki> though...I can rubbish his arguments and i have no formal training whatsoever. so yeah...
[01:26:18] <fyngyrz> They're all full of shit. Because... it's shit. So... there you go.
[01:26:32] <AzumaHazuki> his big one is "transworld depravity," basically "in no possible world does any significantly-free, non-God obtain without sin also obtaining." 10 seconds of thought made me go "uh, but heaven...?"
[01:27:14] <AzumaHazuki> because according to him, either we lose significantly-free will (which he never defines...) in heaven, meaning the free will theodicy is bunk, or we keep it but never sin there, meaning sin is caused by circumstance, not free will
[01:27:19] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Dance Your PhD's 2018 Winner Mixes Superconductivity and Swing Dancing - http://sylnt.us - very-cool!
[01:27:22] <AzumaHazuki> but he doesn't seem to see this
[01:27:28] <fyngyrz> it's just handwaving
[01:28:06] <AzumaHazuki> Freeman and Bot both act like i never said anything when i make this argument. they utterly ignore it, as if no one said anything. that's rather dishonest
[01:28:40] <fyngyrz> epistemological snakes eating their own tails
[01:29:09] <fyngyrz> dishonesty is the core of all religions
[01:29:24] <fyngyrz> you're either fooling others, or fooling yoruself
[01:29:26] <fyngyrz> or both
[01:29:43] <AzumaHazuki> is there something wrong with me, for chasing this level of mental hygiene? I've wrestled with the Ship of Theseus problem, the very real issues with foundationalism, etc...
[01:30:14] <fyngyrz> well, lets just say you're pretty isolated. Not broken, but few are out there on the water with you
[01:30:48] <AzumaHazuki> i've met a few and it's all dudes and soooo many of them have fallen for the "rational" idols of today like Peterson or Sargon or whoever...
[01:30:59] <fyngyrz> and like I said, it's somewhere to start
[01:31:04] <AzumaHazuki> maybe I really am all alone
[01:31:09] <fyngyrz> nah
[01:31:19] <fyngyrz> I spent years where you seem to be to me, anyway
[01:31:51] <fyngyrz> Eventually I just got bored and accepted it all
[01:32:19] <fyngyrz> Sometimes I engage for fun these days, but I know it's going nowhere
[01:32:24] <AzumaHazuki> eh...i'm kind of there now. i've found what seems to be a working system, kick the tires on it every chance i get, and mostly don't worry so much
[01:32:35] <fyngyrz> sounds good
[01:32:51] <AzumaHazuki> it's just really lonely. where are the other women who think about this? it's seriously ALL guys out there from what i've seen
[01:33:10] <fyngyrz> keep looking. My SO is one. But she's mine. :)
[01:33:43] <AzumaHazuki> LOL, don't worry
[01:35:03] <AzumaHazuki> mostly, i'm just hoping this pharmacy tech thing lasts a long time, like "40+ years" long. I've never had a stable life, not since early childhood
[01:35:25] <AzumaHazuki> it's been barely 2 months and already i'm feeling better than in the last decade
[01:35:41] <fyngyrz> well good, and good luck with it
[01:35:59] <fyngyrz> life can be really hard, I know
[01:36:07] <AzumaHazuki> probation is over in a month. no reason to think i won't pass, but...ugh. nothing good has ever lasted
[01:36:31] <fyngyrz> do your best, try not to worry, it does NOT help
[01:36:59] <AzumaHazuki> yeah...i told myself "pretend probation's over. you can't change anything anyway. do your best. if you get dropped, well, then you can go kill yourself, but not before"
[01:37:35] <fyngyrz> Choices everywhere.
[01:38:07] <AzumaHazuki> i have no family who will help, no friends who can help, no savings, and nowhere safe to go if this falls through
[01:38:27] <AzumaHazuki> honestly, i'm just out of existential fuel. i've seen it all and more, and have long since had enough. death holds no fear for me
[01:38:42] <fyngyrz> it's your call, of course
[01:38:56] <fyngyrz> personally, I'm rather fond of life
[01:39:10] <fyngyrz> even though it's had some really, *really* bad moments
[01:39:19] <AzumaHazuki> i'm not. not after some of what i've experienced and much more of what i've seen
[01:39:34] <fyngyrz> there are other venues and circumstances, I assure you
[01:40:03] <fyngyrz> just because you're sitting in a bad place, and have been in others, doesn't mean all places are bad
[01:40:36] <fyngyrz> I think the world would be a lesser place without you. So there's that tiny thing.
[01:40:47] <AzumaHazuki> i know. but most of those places may as well be on the moon for me, to say nothing about those even worse off
[01:40:48] <fyngyrz> because you know, there are so few of us
[01:41:13] <fyngyrz> where are you, city-wise / et5c.?
[01:41:32] <AzumaHazuki> Madison, WI. it's...good here, IF you are above a certain income level
[01:41:49] <fyngyrz> midwest
[01:41:49] <AzumaHazuki> i just hope like hell Evers can undo some of the damage Walker did
[01:42:08] <fyngyrz> it'll be slow, most likely, even if so
[01:43:22] <AzumaHazuki> too many of my friends have died, and died of things they had no reason to, but for other peoples' greed. others still live on, miserably, and i can't save them
[01:45:02] <AzumaHazuki> and trying to say any of this to "normal" people just gets you looked at like you're insane. poverty is treated as something like a communicable disease and something like a sin in this country
[01:45:16] <fyngyrz> you're near bottom. I assure you that even if you were living higher, people would still be in similar circumstances; you can't fix most things, even if they are dear to you
[01:45:40] <fyngyrz> only society working together can do that, and we don't have that kind of society
[01:46:32] <AzumaHazuki> I know...
[01:48:06] <AzumaHazuki> if it were possible i'd make it so every smug sock-sniffing libertarian asshole on SN ended up homeless and jobless, just to see what if anything changed
[01:48:15] <AzumaHazuki> it seems some people only understand pain when it happens to them
[01:48:54] <fyngyrz> and by understand, one mustn't assume "empathize" is implied
[01:49:14] <fyngyrz> that's just asking for disappointment
[01:49:21] <AzumaHazuki> oh yes, i know better than to hope for that
[01:50:05] <AzumaHazuki> the worst part is, these people don't want to help the poor even when it would be more cost effective than to continue the current system. they are willing to pay more (mostly of other peoples' money) to make sure "the poors" as they call them suffer more
[01:50:29] <AzumaHazuki> that's...twisted beyond my comprehension. it's not even a moral outrage at that point, it's "WTF, why? What good does that do?"
[01:50:49] <fyngyrz> retribution, pitchforks and torches. It's the American Way.
[01:51:13] <fyngyrz> "that'll learn 'em"
[01:51:38] <fyngyrz> the prison system shows how integrated this is into our basic policies
[01:51:46] <fyngyrz> whole thing is cockamamie
[01:51:48] <AzumaHazuki> yes. yes it does.
[01:52:07] <AzumaHazuki> a great way to make a major criminal is to stick a minor criminal in prison
[01:52:24] <fyngyrz> that, or a mentally crushed (or dead) victim
[01:52:30] <AzumaHazuki> especially because even a single misdemeanor carrying jail time makes you effectively unhireable
[01:52:48] <AzumaHazuki> it's like...once the prison system touches you, you wither and die, you become a different kind of existence, accursed
[01:53:11] <fyngyrz> the best option, not all are capable of sadly, is to start your own business
[01:53:28] <AzumaHazuki> yeah, you need 5 figures' seed capital and a lot of luck
[01:53:36] <fyngyrz> not in all cases, no
[01:53:40] <fyngyrz> the luck yes
[01:53:42] <fyngyrz> the capital, no
[01:54:06] <fyngyrz> borrowing is like sticking a knife in your leg before a 10 KM run
[01:54:18] <AzumaHazuki> barrier to entry is way higher in big cities, too
[01:54:34] <AzumaHazuki> Madison has a bad hipster infestation and it's driving the price of everyfuckingthing through the roof
[01:54:49] <fyngyrz> don't look at the city as the venue. The Inter5net has low, low, low barrier to entry. Etsy. EBay. Etc.
[01:55:00] <AzumaHazuki> true...
[01:55:14] <fyngyrz> and if you can, get out of the city. The cost of living there is much higher than, say, here
[01:55:25] <fyngyrz> (NE MOntana)
[01:56:04] <AzumaHazuki> if i can stay at this hospital for 40+ years i will do it. but if things go to hell here I'm going to try and use this as a way of getting into Canada
[01:56:18] <fyngyrz> Reduce your costs as much as possible, eliminate all optional expenses, make a profit, save. That's really all there is to it.
[01:56:35] <AzumaHazuki> hopefully a few years of this = "Sure, Marissa, you're a 'highly-skilled worker' in 'the field of healthcare' come on in"
[01:56:41] <fyngyrz> I did it. You can do it.
[01:56:43] <AzumaHazuki> i can swear in Quebecois if that helps :v
[01:56:52] <fyngyrz> Oui
[01:57:11] <fyngyrz> I admit it took decades
[01:57:29] <AzumaHazuki> it's really easy. just a long string of Catholic blasphemy with "de" between each word and ending with "TAH-BAR-NAKKKKKH"
[01:57:30] <fyngyrz> but... here I am, still, and I have 5 cats and a great SO
[01:57:46] <AzumaHazuki> 5 cats, eeee <3
[01:57:52] * AzumaHazuki pets them all through the internet
[01:58:06] <fyngyrz> we have lots of room - at least two would appreciate it

[01:58:38] <fyngyrz> they're all rescued ferals, so personalities are a bit offput, as it were
[01:58:52] <AzumaHazuki> if possible, someday, i want to get a cat. will go to a shelter and find an adult black cat for the specific reason that people are dumb about adopting them
[01:59:02] <fyngyrz> dumb as rocks
[01:59:08] <fyngyrz> older cats too
[01:59:30] <AzumaHazuki> i basically am that black-cat type. TVTropes has a trope, "Dark Magical Girl." Which, metaphorically, fits really well
[02:02:00] <fyngyrz> I must run. Try to be of good cheer. It's not all bad. It just sometimes looks that way.
[02:02:20] <AzumaHazuki> things may be improving :)
[02:02:29] <AzumaHazuki> hope things continue well for you, too
