[11:38:42] <upstart> ^ 03SoylentNews Submissions
[11:40:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, that's an expected article. pundits love taking a move that is supposed to have medium or long-term results and blasting it for not showing short-term results.
[11:40:44] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: s/supposed/claimed/
[11:41:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> same difference
[11:41:14] <Bytram> disgree
[11:41:24] <AndyTheAbsurd> Go look at the history. Every time there's a Republican tax cut: wages slump, tax revenues go down, we get a deficit.
[11:41:55] <TheMightyBuzzard> over what timespan?
[11:41:58] <Bytram> Hey, Me and my wealthy buds are tired of paying so much in taxes... how can we give ourselves a tax cut and *claim* that it will benefit people so that they will go along and enable it for us?
[11:42:58] <Bytram> when Clinton was in office, there was a budget *surplus*... we were on our way to actually paying *off* the national debt and there were worries about what the economy would look like if that should happen.
[11:43:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean it's blindingly obvious that you can't spend money you haven't received back yet
[11:43:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, that wasn't on him. that was on the dotcom boom.
[11:43:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> he wasn't particularly harmful to the economy but he wasn't any kind of savior
[11:44:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> the economy growing like a weed was what caused that.
[11:45:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> hey, cool, we can drop TLS1 and TLS1.1 in a little over a year
[11:45:53] <Bytram> From what I've seen, recessions occurred not long after republicans pushed through tax cuts for the rich... it took a while for the dems to pull us from the brink of disaster with increased taxes, start to make progress... R's would pounce on people's dislike of paying higher taxes, claim they will cut taxes, do so... Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
[11:47:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, republicans haven't pushed through tax cuts "for the rich" since reagan. they've pushed through across the board tax cuts.
[11:47:10] <Bytram> ahh, the sound of lawnmowers in the morning. :P
[11:47:48] <Bytram> with different durations of who gets how much cuts
[11:47:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> and you're also looking for immediate results of a medium-to-long-term change
[11:49:33] <Bytram> remember who you are talking to... I *see* details and patterns based not only on short-term consequences but things that happen multiple *plies* down the road... (plies as in game theory)... Is why I am so good at breaking things... I can see where others fail to perceive consequences for their actions
[11:49:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> in any case, lowering taxes literally can not cause a recession unless you believe the government causes prosperity
[11:49:58] <Bytram> non sequitor
[11:50:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> is not
[11:50:26] <Bytram> false logical assertion; one has no direct bearing on the other.
[11:50:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> lowering taxes does not harm the economy because it by definition puts more money into it.
[11:50:53] <Bytram> *laughter*
[11:51:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> unless you believe moving some of that money to the government is going to cause it to be used more efficiently
[11:51:12] * Bytram wishes he could take a pay cut and have more money to pay his rent
[11:51:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, the government is not the economy
[11:51:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> that would be you getting a pay raise
[11:52:17] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean you're literally saying if you pay less taxes you have less money in your paycheck right now
[11:53:09] <Bytram> so I borrow money (put it on my credit card, whatever) and pay additional interest on top of current expense with money I will earn later.
[11:53:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> the deficit is not the economy. it rising does not cause recession.
[11:53:18] * TheMightyBuzzard bangs his head on the desk
[11:53:23] <Bytram> borrow more, pay more interest
[11:53:32] <TheMightyBuzzard> the deficit is not the economy
[11:53:38] <Bytram> then, when interest rates go up, gets even worse!
[11:54:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> when you cut people's taxes you are taking less of their money. it is a tautology that taking less of their money means they have more of it.
[11:55:39] <Bytram> missing point. People have more money for a while, but things still need to be funded... govt gets money from taxes, at some point bills become due and you got to pay for what you bought, and now with interest added on top.
[11:55:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> lower taxes only negatively affect the deficit, which has a negative feedback but not over the short or medium term
[11:56:10] <Bytram> so let me get mine and screw it for the next generation?
[11:56:27] <Bytram> ;)
[11:56:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> no, more money moving means greater growth potential, which means more revenue.
[11:56:53] <Bytram> *potential*
[11:57:01] <Bytram> does not necessarily follow
[11:57:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> there're no guarantees in life.
[11:57:13] * Bytram remembers stagflation (PAINFUL!)
[11:57:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, good ole carter
[11:57:34] <Bytram> doing the best he could with the results of the oil embargo
[11:57:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> i could have done better but shurg
[11:58:01] <Bytram> so going back, if it's only growth *potential*, then it does NOT follow that it will always mean more revenue.
[11:58:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> now whether that growth materializes strongly enough to offset the negative feedback of deficit spending, that's the question.
[11:58:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> of course not. i said there were no guarantees.
[11:58:49] <Bytram> "which means more revenue" -- I see no equivocation there... that's an absolute statement to my eye
[11:59:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> it logically guarantees better short and medium term positions for everyone but given stable or increasing spending it is a gamble
[11:59:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> not a bad-odds gamble, mind you
[11:59:44] <Bytram> and i have yet to see the gambles pay off.
[11:59:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> haven't you?
[12:00:14] <Bytram> not in my experience
[12:00:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> betting against the us economy long-term has been foolish in the extreme for most of our existence
[12:00:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> there are short-to-medium-term dips but we always kick ass long-term
[12:00:50] <Bytram> heck, i could boost my monthly income by 10% real easy, just keep taking cash advances from my credit card. Works great until it doesn't.
[12:01:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> doesn't equate.
[12:01:26] <Bytram> deficit spending is when the govt does exactly that.
[12:01:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> deficit spending when you control the currency isn't remotely the same as when someone else does
[12:01:55] <Bytram> govt borrows money (bonds, etc) to pay for things that it does not have money for yet.
[12:02:18] <TheMightyBuzzard> and when was the last time we defaulted on bonds?
[12:02:18] <Bytram> and so we get inflation, which works until it doesn't
[12:02:57] <TheMightyBuzzard> inflation is the greatest thing to ever happen to the economy for folks who hate the rich. it makes certain their money does not get sat upon.
[12:03:02] <Bytram> interest rates are at historic lows... we've piled on debt... when rates go up...
[12:03:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, we've never defaulted on bonds and never will.
[12:04:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> when you control the currency you can absolutely guarantee that
[12:04:12] <Bytram> and the joe average folks who have their money in saving accounts watch the real value of their money go downhill each year, cuse they don't have enough money to participate in the equities market
[12:04:40] <Bytram> okay, it's a day off for me, and this is getting way too heavy this early in the morning
[12:04:56] <Bytram> and i needs more coffee, too
[12:05:02] <Bytram> coffee+
[12:05:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> and the average joe also gets home/car/business loans on demand instead of there being no flowing money for it
[12:05:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> yep, laters
[12:06:21] <Bytram> oh, almost forgot

[12:07:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> s'not heavy for me or i'd agree. economics isn't all that complex to me unless you're looking for narrow, specific predictions.
[12:07:30] <Bytram> leg cramps woke me about 2 hours ago, and then the drone of lawn mowers have *just* subsided... might even be able to get back to bed.
