[16:50:53] <AndyTheAbsurd> C'mon, people, we all know that p4ssW0rd-QWE is CLEARLY the safest password to use.
[16:51:39] <AndyTheAbsurd> actually I'm kind of surprised that "LetMeIn!" didn't make the list.
[16:51:52] <hopdevil> if you want to share you password with someone, it has to be easy to remember

[16:56:15] <hopdevil> honestly, anything longer than like 10 characters is probably good
[16:57:12] <hopdevil> if it is correctly salted, who is gonna waste time brute forcing that
[16:57:46] <AndyTheAbsurd> that's why I use pwgen
[16:57:53] <AndyTheAbsurd> it creates passwords for me
[16:58:31] <AndyTheAbsurd> and the options I pass it mean it will make sure that there are upper case, lower case, numeric, and punctuation characters in it.
[16:58:47] <hopdevil> but then you store them somewhere
[16:59:10] <hopdevil> sticky notes ftw
[16:59:17] <Sulla> I use a sheet of paper myself

[17:02:23] <hopdevil> i thought one of the basic premises of a password was that it is easy for a human, hard for a computer
[17:32:42] <SemperOSS> hopdevil: Sorry I'm late to the party. Easy for a human and hard for a computer was soooooo last year. Now it is impossible for a human and fairly difficult for a computer. I use Keepass, btw. Long passphrase to open that then it generates my passwords and stores them. I replicate the encrypted database to my other devices with NextCloud.
[17:33:37] <hopdevil> SemperOSS: ya I think that or similiar is what most tech folks do these days
[17:35:41] <SemperOSS> That way I've got nice and long passwords, different for every site but often too long for some sites. (I've had restrictions imposed like letters and numbers only and no more than 8 characters!)
[17:37:06] <hopdevil> the 8 char thing is usually an old unix throwback
[17:37:23] <SemperOSS> Or a mainframe application
[17:37:24] <hopdevil> not having special chars is usually a DB that chokes
[17:38:01] <hopdevil> its a good hint that they are storing the passwords!
[17:38:06] <hopdevil> and not hashes
[17:39:41] <SemperOSS> Yeah, it can't cope with "; DELETE FROM "PASSWORD
[17:40:10] <hopdevil> which should honestly be a decent password :)
