[00:41:11] <idetuxs> Help needed. A text editor for Fedora KDE that shows "all-characters" (carriage returns, newlines, tabs, etc) like Notepad++ gracefully does?
[00:42:18] <idetuxs> Been using Kate for a while which is awesome, but is lacking this simple but time-saving option
[00:45:05] <Bytram> idetuxs: Hi there!
[00:45:25] <Bytram> I don't have much experience in that realm...
[00:45:31] <idetuxs> Hi!
[00:45:43] <Bytram> My editor-of-choice is emacs
[00:45:53] <Bytram> it's got a mode for *everything*
[00:46:15] <Bytram> but, it can have a bit of a learning curve if you dive into 'fundamental mode'
[00:46:32] <Bytram> (old school kbd 'commands')
[00:46:41] <idetuxs> Yes, tried that many years ago, but gave it little chance
[00:46:48] <Bytram> but, arrow keys / insert / del / etc. all work just fine
[00:47:08] <idetuxs> gave up learning pretty soon
[00:47:18] <idetuxs> sorry xP
[00:47:26] <idetuxs> also, I'm a VIM guy
[00:47:34] <idetuxs> jk
[00:47:34] <Bytram> I have been using it for prolly 30 years (yikes!) and have barely scratched the surface as to the customization and extras that can be added
[00:47:43] <Bytram> I find a subset that works for me and just stick with it
[00:48:10] <Bytram> besides, it has been available on every platform I've wanted it on since the early 1990's
[00:48:23] <idetuxs> That's actually pretty cool
[00:48:32] <Bytram> now, there are some who claim the real editor should be vi, but we won't speak of those folks, okay?
[00:48:34] <Bytram> ;)
[00:49:11] <Bytram> I went 10-15 years or so having to learn a new editor for each new OS I found myself on...
[00:49:27] <Bytram> being able to find one that could come along with me saved a *lot* of work
[00:50:01] <Bytram> besides, one of the first editors I learned was TECO, and emacs was basically teco-on-steroids
[00:50:05] <Bytram> #g teco
[00:50:06] <MrPlow> https://www.tecoenergy.com - "Driving forward. TECO Energy supports the development of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). Get more info...Get more info... Hands Thumb ..."
[00:50:07] <upstart> ^ 03Welcome - TECO Energy
[00:50:11] <Bytram> lol
[00:50:13] <Bytram> #g teco editor
[00:50:13] <MrPlow> https://en.wikipedia.org(text_editor) - "TECO Text Editor & COrrector is both a sophisticated character-oriented text editor and a powerful programming language that was developed in 1962 for use ..."
[00:50:14] <upstart> ^ 03TECO (text editor) - Wikipedia
[00:50:29] <Bytram> .
[00:51:12] <Bytram> I worked at a place in the mid-late 80's that had a library of subroutines that they would need to customize for different machines/clients.
[00:51:16] <idetuxs> haha
[00:51:29] <Bytram> kept getting burned by making a change in one module that would cause issues in another
[00:51:39] <Bytram> and they had no master overview of all their routines
[00:52:07] <Bytram> I wrote a cross reference tool that read in all the source files and created a, well, cross reference
[00:52:13] <Bytram> and I wrote it in TECO.
[00:52:16] <Bytram> =)
[00:52:45] <Bytram> oh, and that was using a dumb ADM-3A "glass tty"
[00:52:55] <Bytram> #g ADM-3a terminal
[00:52:55] <MrPlow> https://en.wikipedia.org - "The ADM-3A was one of the first video display terminals. First shipped in 1976, it was manufactured by Lear Siegler and had a 12 inch screen displaying 12 or ..."
[00:52:56] <upstart> ^ 03ADM-3A - Wikipedia
[00:53:30] <Bytram> idetuxs: so, I don't know if I've helped answer your question.,..
[00:53:47] <Bytram> if you need something *right* now, then check out emacs
[00:54:11] <Bytram> if you can wait a bit, you *might* find a choice that works better for you.
[00:54:58] <Bytram> either way, you'd hardly go wrong to get your hands a little bit dirty with emacs as you can take the skills you learn to pretty much any other system... it's highly portable
