[00:56:21] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Company That Handles Prison Phone Calls is Surveilling People Who Aren't in Prison - http://sylnt.us - the-long-way-around
[01:38:34] <Bytram> had a draining weekend with work, but survived it okay. Neighbors seem to be uncharacteristically quiet atm; think I'll take a try at early-to-bed and catch up on some much-needed shuteye.

[16:32:36] <boru> Hmm, didn't some US politician say that was happening already?
[16:32:52] <boru> That NASA climate studies would end, and the projects/funding be transferred to NOAA.
[16:33:01] <boru> Which is sensible, imho, but what's quiet about that?
[16:34:35] <boru> Here we go, Robert Walker: http://spacenews.com

[16:47:31] <AndyTheAbsurd> boru: you really expect that Trump & crew are going to *move* that project from one government department to another, rather than just cut funding altogether?

[16:49:54] <boru> They've been moving other projects, though.
[16:50:49] <boru> NOAA is where those projects should've been funded in the first place, imho.
[16:53:22] <AndyTheAbsurd> It's not like they don't already have a relationship there. https://www.nasa.gov
[16:53:23] <upstart> ^ 03NOAA | NASA
[16:54:35] <boru> Of course, but my point is that some projects _have_ been moved. So, it seems like this article is selectively omitting that this project will probably be taken up under NOAA again, that's all I'm saying.
[16:54:51] <boru> I don't care about the politics at all, just the science.
[16:59:07] <AndyTheAbsurd> "my point is that some projects _have_ been moved." [citation needed]
[16:59:19] <AndyTheAbsurd> And I'm not gonna google them right now because I've got a meeting to go to.
[16:59:35] <boru> Let me see if I can find some examples quickly.
[16:59:51] <cmn32480> #g projects moved from NASA to NOAA
[16:59:51] <MrPlow> https://www.nasa.gov - "NASA's Terra satellite and NOAA's GOES East satellite have been just two of the ... the series of GOES satellites and NASA/NOAA GOES Project at NASA Goddard ... 14 ending at 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 UTC) shows Irma remnants moved fromĀ ..."
[16:59:52] <upstart> ^ 03NASA Sees Remnants of Irma Ready to Exit Eastern U.S. | NASA ( https://www.nasa.gov )
[17:01:26] <boru> Sheesh, their new site design is feckin awful.
[17:07:19] <boru> So, NOAA stuff, just in reference to climate/greenhouse stuff: https://www.esrl.noaa.gov https://www.climate.gov https://www.ncei.noaa.gov

[17:07:22] <upstart> ^ 03National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)
[17:07:36] <boru> Fairly certain the CMS/OCO-3 stuff will go to the latter.
[17:08:30] <boru> As for projects which have already been moved, I'm fairly certain that DSCOVR was initially a NASA mission.
[17:08:38] <boru> I'm looking for others, as well.
[17:09:28] <boru> I had thought AIM was moved as well, or in the process of being transferred, but I can't find a citation for it.

[17:13:11] <boru> That's about all I can find without spending more time on it.

[17:19:42] <boru> That aside, I think NASA's involvement with the IPCC was a colossal waste of resources. As I've said before, their project management need a kick up the arse. IMHO, I think they _should_ focus on space, and leave Earth observation to {NWS,NOAA,et al} where the actual climate experts are.
[17:20:23] <boru> NOAA have similar issues with beaurocrats in cushy positions. I've seen _their_ particular brand of politics first hand.
[17:20:32] <boru> But it doesn't hold a candle to NASA's.
[17:21:35] <boru> FTR, I'm also not one of those climate change deniers, I just don't buy the whole jumping on the bandwagon that there's a war on climate change going on.
[17:27:19] <boru> And in the comments, someone has helpfully posted a link to the NOAA budget for this year: https://research.noaa.gov
[17:27:28] <boru> Looks like the climate research budget is up from last year.
[17:27:52] <boru> And trended upwards from the year before, last year, also.
[17:29:21] <boru> Anyway, enough of my diatribe; I'm going to make dinner.

[22:37:14] <boru> This again. They'd have to go to larger fab for layered Si because the thermal density is insane. They've tried this with FPGAs, and it doesn't work.
[22:37:36] <boru> They're milking Si for all it's worth, it seems.
