[12:54:16] <FatPhil> today, I'm setting up a set of speakers I've not seen for 17 years (when I left England). Not all the screws necessary to hold the stands together can be found :(

[17:12:04] <jasassin> oh poutine
[17:12:07] <jasassin> has a nice system
[17:49:11] <jasassin> you can't start a lighter with an already burning cigarette
[17:49:13] <jasassin> it doesn't work
[17:49:17] <jasassin> i just tried
[17:50:07] <AndyTheAbsurd> you might be able to start a lighter with a different type of lighter
[17:50:41] <jasassin> duh
[17:50:41] * AndyTheAbsurd doesn't have either a cigarette lighter or one of those sparker lighters we used in HS chemistry class handy to test this out, though.
[17:50:54] <jasassin> im just saying
[17:50:59] <jasassin> i thought it was interesting
[17:51:07] <jasassin> i tried to light a lighter with a lit cigarrete
[17:51:15] <jasassin> and i even tried to cup the fumes
[17:51:19] <jasassin> i tried it lots of times
[17:51:23] <jasassin> it doesn't work
[17:52:25] <jasassin> for some reason a spark has the energy to set off the atoms
[17:53:09] <jasassin> but the cherry from a cigarette does not
[17:53:30] <jasassin> it's weird
[17:54:05] <jasassin> just a real world observation
[17:54:09] <jasassin> i thought was interesting

[17:57:05] <jasassin> you dont even need to graduate from highchool to make that
[17:57:09] <jasassin> its terrible
[17:57:15] <jasassin> its why wfy
[17:57:28] <jasassin> and pressure cooker bombs they make those
[17:57:37] <jasassin> if these stupid assholes knew what they were doing omfg
[17:58:34] <jasassin> just thinking about it is making mcguyer wonder wtf did i teach these kids?
[17:59:00] <jasassin> all we need is some aluminum powder and
[17:59:04] <jasassin> i wont go on
[17:59:11] <jasassin> because i dont want stupid idiots to do it
[17:59:13] <AndyTheAbsurd> LOL
[17:59:28] <AndyTheAbsurd> it's okay, I know what the other ingredient for thermite is. :)
[17:59:39] <jasassin> :)
[18:02:54] <jasassin> im just saying
[18:03:01] <jasassin> if they read a few fucking books
[18:03:19] <jasassin> maybe they wouldn't want to kill and learn some more about how awesome shit is
[18:03:56] <jasassin> simple question andy
[18:04:01] <jasassin> no googling allowed
[18:04:27] <jasassin> how many electrons in the valence shell of a carbon atom?
[18:06:02] <jasassin> how many rads can a human being survive?
[18:06:05] <jasassin> 4
[18:06:10] <jasassin> and it depends
[18:06:19] <jasassin> either way you die
[18:06:23] <jasassin> more rads you die faster
[18:06:42] <jasassin> even the human body emits radiation
[18:06:54] <jasassin> death is inevitable
[18:08:11] <jasassin> even in a box floating through space cryogenic
[18:08:13] <jasassin> you die
[18:08:28] <jasassin> theres no such thing
[18:08:43] <jasassin> i hate to blow your minds
[18:08:56] <jasassin> due to the laws of physics it is impossible

[20:28:18] <FatPhil> Today I discovered that 95 Japanese watts are the same as 30 English watts. :/
[20:29:46] <mechanicjay> ...huh
[20:30:57] <cmn32480> don't5 get all amped up over it
[20:43:55] <n1_> UK polls close in a few minutes
[20:44:13] <n1_> so get out there and vote people! even if you don't know what you're voting for, get out there and show your support for ideas you don't understand!
[20:44:38] * n1_ is sick of hearing that from people in the UK, "i don't care who you vote for, just vote for someone, it's important!"
[20:56:43] <FatPhil> Every absent voter should be counted as "none of the above", and "none of the above"s should be listed in the official result.
[20:57:31] <n1_> also sick of this 'if your demographic is not represented, vote for someone anyway, otherwise you'll never be represented'
[20:57:40] <n1_> which to me seems like a very backwards way of doing things
[20:57:44] <FatPhil> I voted once (in the UK), and my retort for the last ~30 years has been "If you voted, then you are responsible for the result, because you validated a broken system".
[20:57:51] <cmn32480> as expats, but still citizens of the UK, do you get to vote by absentee ballot?
[20:58:01] <FatPhil> I don't - absent too long
[20:58:29] <n1_> from how i understand politics works... they will see an uptick in a demographic and assume they got them anyway, so wont represent, because why do they need to, they already got their votes the last time?
[20:58:30] <FatPhil> I notice the mirror is advocating tactical voting.
[20:59:37] <n1_> the variables at play right now are SNP and LibDems... if people who traditionally vote for those parties go for labour, then a hung parliament is a strong possibility
[20:59:56] <n1_> i assume the majority of last elections UKIP will go tory
[21:00:22] <n1_> which, if the other party supporters dont vote for labour tactically, then it will be a stronger majority for the tories
[21:00:36] * cmn32480 woudl love to hang Congress... all fo them
[21:01:22] <FatPhil> y tactical vote.
[21:01:45] <FatPhil> I vacillate between Labour, Lib Dem, and Green, if you look at the last 3 decades. So, given the brokenness of the system, were it urgent, I'd happily tactical vote.
[21:02:32] <n1_> i've only ever voted in UK local elections, i would have voted libdem in 2010, but logistics stopped me being able to
[21:02:40] <n1_> but after their showing in the coalition, i'm glad i didn't
[21:02:43] <FatPhil> tactical voting's being done quite scientifically: https://www.tactical2017.com

[21:03:13] * exec transphobically offers a dongle of cash to cmn32480
[21:03:42] <n1_> my 'home' seat is one of the ones thats been tory since before WWI, so its kind of irrelevant to me
[21:03:46] <n1_> even if i did vote
[21:04:04] <n1_> conservatives always win, lib dems come second, no one votes labour
[21:04:37] <FatPhil> My home seat was one of the most solid conservative seats in existence - it was the biggest swing in the anti-conservataive backlash a few elections back.
[21:04:49] <FatPhil> Harrow West.
[21:05:59] <n1_> oh actually im wrong
[21:06:04] <n1_> labour came second last time

[21:06:06] <upstart> ^ 03Harrow West ( - Wikipedia
[21:06:20] <n1_> in conext, labour came second with... 12%
[21:06:25] <n1_> cons got 62%
[21:06:43] <FatPhil> Labour Co-op Gareth Thomas 21,811 41.5 +19.0 Conservative Robert Hughes 20,571 39.2 −16.0
[21:07:13] <FatPhil> ergh. labour +19%, con -16%, that's the important part.
[21:07:31] <n1_> 2010 in my area, lib dems got 24%, in 2015 they got 10%...
[21:07:46] <n1_> thats how labour came second going from 10% to 12%..
[21:08:10] <FatPhil> OK, I think mine was the safest that ever actually swung away, but yours sounds safer in absolute terms.
[21:08:59] <n1_> yeah, i cant see it ever changing really... it's one of those super wealthy surrey areas
[21:09:10] <n1_> a place where you dont have speed cameras because too many people have ferraris and bentleys
[21:09:37] <n1_> people dont want to get speeding tickets in their own town
[21:10:30] <FatPhil> gonna guess Woking?
[21:10:36] <n1_> seems like your seat is definitely one to watch this time around
[21:10:44] <n1_> close
[21:10:47] <n1_> esher and walton
[21:11:26] <FatPhil> You won't be offended if I say "where!??!" will you?
[21:11:41] <n1_> it's just down the road from woking
[21:11:45] <n1_> or up the road
[21:11:48] <FatPhil> Esher rings a bell. Probably in a manor-house context.
[21:13:42] <Deucalion> My constituency has had the same tory MP since 1997 :/
[21:14:55] <FatPhil> 97 was Harrow West's anti-conservative whip^Wbacklash
[21:15:08] <FatPhil> Baron Badger gets my vote.
[21:15:33] <n1_> FatPhil, some example of what i mean... in esher the average semi detached house cost £850k apparently
[21:16:20] <n1_> which is more than the average detached house in woking
[21:16:46] <FatPhil> Yeah, Woking sounded a bit "common" for your description, but I believe has some fancier parts
[21:17:05] <n1_> oh indeed it does, the best parts are at a crossover between woking, weybridge and esher
[21:17:15] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - The Milky Way Resides in a Great Cosmic Void - http://sylnt.us - I’m-mr.-lonely
[21:17:34] <Deucalion> in fact it seems it's been a tory stronghold since the seat was created in 1974.... glad I spent the time to vote today :/
[21:17:50] <FatPhil> I used to have a friend who lived in a very fancy (tennis court, swimming pool, that kind of fancy) road or estate called "Sunhill", and that's what I goodled for.
[21:18:02] <n1_> i used to live just down the road from the private estate where john lennon and mcartney caused trouble back in the day
[21:18:17] <n1_> they wanted to join the golf club, but they were a bit too new money for that kind of thing
[21:18:42] <FatPhil> 2 invitations from prior members tends to keep out the riff-raff
[21:19:16] <n1_> apparently ringo starr still lives there
[21:20:20] <n1_> you know it's something when two 'estates' within a mile of each other have their own wikipedia pages
[21:21:29] <FatPhil> Yeah. As long as the estates have walls such that there's somewhere for the residents' backs when the revolution comes! ;-)
[21:22:08] <n1_> the one where the beatles lived is the only one i know of that actually has manned security 24/7 at the gates

[21:27:07] <FatPhil> "Sunhill", which we jokingly always used to call "Funhill", as it was full of KPMG top execs, and equally exciting people, was a gated estate.
[21:28:17] <n1_> in my last few contracts before i left the UK, you just couldn't get away from KPMG, everyone developing property i came across had some connection to them
[21:29:05] <n1_> maybe i said too much, the pound just dropped
[21:30:36] <n1_> was crawling back up to 1.30 and then in the blink of an eye we're back to 1.27
[21:30:38] <FatPhil> exit polls suggest hanging
[21:30:45] <FatPhil> sorry, hung parliament
[21:30:52] <n1_> lol

[21:54:30] * n1_ goes to edit some stories and hope he doesn't come back to find GBP on par with zimbabwean dollar
[22:06:18] <Deucalion> TheMightyBuzzard spoke a total of 512060 words! teehee
[22:22:06] <n1_> i want to go out and buy cigarettes, but apparently theres some fuel crisis going here :/
[22:22:41] <Deucalion> you still have feet :P
[22:23:33] <n1_> i dont know when the store down the street closes
[22:24:31] <Deucalion> only one way to find out
[22:26:23] <n1_> is times like this you miss 24hr petrol stations and tesco express closing at 11
[22:35:10] <Deucalion> you'll have to learn to keep higher stock levels for such contingencies
[22:48:11] <n1_> i made it to the store down the road
[22:48:24] <n1_> cigarettes and cheetos for dinner
[22:48:55] <Deucalion> sounds like a balanced meal to me
[22:50:03] <n1_> i'm saving the rum until the election results come in
[22:54:38] <n1_> first three seats have gone to labour
[22:56:11] <Deucalion> what are you using to spectate on the results?
[22:57:04] <n1_> bbc and twitter
[22:57:07] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Rooftop Solar Returning to Nevada - http://sylnt.us - defeating-lobbyists-for-non-renewable-energy
[22:57:41] <Deucalion> well I hope you have a tv license :D
[22:57:53] <n1_> just using the website
[22:57:56] <n1_> !!!
[22:59:01] <Deucalion> they'll probably demand a license for that too soon - have to make up for all the bbc abandoners some how... in fact they'll just make it a per capita levy regardless :D
[23:00:41] <n1_> if the tories win this election, could be the final nail for the bbc
[23:01:45] <n1_> traditional corporate media is much more supportive of tory policy, and theyve been chipping away at the bbc for years now
[23:02:06] <n1_> even the traditionally left wing private media in the UK couldn't help but spend the last year shitting all over the labour party, especially corbyn
[23:04:43] <Deucalion> He's too left wing for the media types, they like their left wing to not be too red coloured - a pale blue will do.... a.k.a tory-lite :)
[23:06:05] <n1_> Deucalion, did you see anything about 'mr ethical' in hastings in regard to amber rudd?
[23:06:11] <n1_> was an interesting story
[23:07:03] <Deucalion> newp
[23:08:58] <n1_> https://www.youtube.com
[23:08:59] <upstart> ^ 03Amber Rudd accused of shutting down Mr Ethical talking about Saudi arms deal - YouTube
[23:09:35] <n1_> talked about HSBC-Saudi Arms deals-Serious Fraud Office
[23:10:13] <n1_> " a question was asked about law & order. Home Secretary Amber Rudd, in answering it referred to the Manchester terrorist attack. I took up the theme and referred to UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia & HSBC business there. She spoke to and handed a note to the chairman who removed the mic from me."
[23:14:05] <Deucalion> Well obviously - you don't get to ask any questions that she doesn't want to address, or more realistically doesn't have a prepared soundbite from the mandarins to trot out. Probably had her wings clipped on saying anything off piste following the 'all the hashtags' thing :D
[23:15:32] <n1_> apparently on Radio4 on tuesday said: "Well, we’ve managed to reduce that, the funding links, and we are always watchful to make sure that their influence, where it’s bad, is going to be limited."
[23:15:37] <n1_> in regard to Saudi funding ISIS
[23:15:45] <n1_> but then later, when someone called up, she denied saying it
[23:17:23] <n1_> BBC apparently shit themselves and the presenter claimed responsibility for the 'suggestion' and wiping the above statement from the record
[23:18:30] <Deucalion> Nothing surprises me any more.
[23:19:45] <n1_> polite society in british politics means it's unsightly to broach such topics, we must stick to our tried and tested soundbite variations that have been consistent for 40 years
[23:19:55] <n1_> don't want to confuse anyone with actual tangible information
[23:21:09] <n1_> the HSBC thing is pretty big, but impossible to report on apparently, too much advertising and commercial interests linked in with HSBC
[23:28:05] <Deucalion> Is there such a thing as an ethical bank? Why would anyone even expect them to have ethics... they exist to skim every financial transaction
[23:29:52] <n1_> "HSBC Holdings has hired a former spokesman for the Britain's prime minister and now a senior official at HM Treasury to develop its banking relations with governments." - 2013
[23:30:51] <n1_> that revolving door works so well
[23:32:50] <n1_> is like the time they got a former head of some bank, to chair the committee looking into the bank he used to run, to see if they'd broken any laws or regulations
[23:33:02] <n1_> surprisingly enough, nothing suspicious was found.
[23:33:41] <n1_> not aware of any revolving doors, but was interesting the other day that PwC was cleared of any wrongdoing in regarding the Tesco accounts audit
[23:34:11] <n1_> that 230M in profits that didn't exist, that PwC audited, somehow isn't their responsibility
[23:35:33] <Deucalion> well you couldn't expect them to audit such a large organisation and ~not~ miss the odd small detail here or there :/
[23:36:08] <n1_> but they may have found some smaller firms involved that they might sacrifice, investigations into them are still ongoing... but they decided for PwC there was 'little chance of conviction'
[23:36:45] <Deucalion> aka - they has better barristers on retainer and oodles of funds with which to pay them
[23:37:50] <n1_> well i still assume some of the people doing the investigations used to work for PwC/KMPG/Deloitte and you don't want to open that can of worms
[23:38:12] <n1_> would be really awkward at those christmas parties
[23:38:22] <n1_> and for any future speaking engagements you may want to get lined up
[23:48:50] <n1_> "Heard from very good source who was there that Rupert Murdoch stormed out of The Times Election Party after seeing the Exit Poll " - John Prescott
[23:52:00] <Deucalion> bit early in the returns to be getting all excited or upset either way. I'll see what transpired when I next awake.
[23:52:18] <n1_> sounds like a good idea
