[00:03:48] <chromas> We should all be running Lennart's BTRFS-suvolume-based package management
[00:06:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> cmn32480, yes. dunno what they are offhand cause i don't deal in that scale but i do know they exist.
[00:10:47] <Xyem> It's something I need to look into for my VMs, but I haven't done so yet.
[00:11:17] <NCommander> WHO BROKE IT?
[00:11:21] <NCommander> TheMightyBuzzard, I'm getting a 500 :/
[00:11:37] * NCommander got rid of it by hitting F5
[00:11:51] <cmn32480> wasn't me
[00:11:59] * cmn32480 points to Xyem...
[00:12:03] <cmn32480> blame the new guy!
[00:12:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> happens occasionally. i generally hear one complaint a week or so.
[00:12:58] <NCommander> Part of me feels like we should fix it but it would be an utter bitch to find a very intermedint 500 :/
[00:13:03] -!- jasassin [jasassin!~jasassin@923-919-40-91-ktkgfbv.midco.net] has joined #Soylent
[00:13:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> F5 usually solves it but i bounce the apache/varnish frontends when it happens just for good measure.
[00:13:43] <NCommander> TheMightyBuzzard, if you're in the system, anything interesting in the apache error log?
[00:14:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> too much to see. we need to clean house after this deploy.
[00:15:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> looked a day or so ago. it were bad.
[00:15:34] <TheMightyBuzzard> not breaking things bad but hard as shit to troubleshoot anything bad.
[00:16:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> yo, boss guy... you wanna roll that thing out tonight since we're both here anyway?
[00:17:02] <NCommander> the key?
[00:17:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, right, we're doing that today.
[00:17:18] <NCommander> TheMightyBuzzard, proably need to do an upgrade cycle dedicated to deshittifying error_log. Again
[00:17:24] <NCommander> TheMightyBuzzard, yeah, I can be on standby
[00:17:30] <NCommander> I'm getting ready to go get dinner
[00:17:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> no worries
[00:17:44] <Xyem> I'm happy to look into cleaning up things getting into error_log.
[00:18:00] <NCommander> He says that now ...
[00:18:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> well most of the same errors should be on dev's error log
[00:18:18] <Xyem> To be honest, I'd added it to my TODO before I even said that, but you know..
[00:18:28] <NCommander> mod_perl errors make peoples beards go grew
[00:18:31] <NCommander> *grey
[00:18:59] <cmn32480> mod_perl aint the only cause
[00:18:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> good. mine's enough lighter than my hair that it looks odd.
[00:19:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> prolly cause i wear a hat if i'm out in the sun
[00:20:07] * NCommander is saving up his SN code contribution for the year for mod_perl 2.4
[00:20:10] <NCommander> *wimper*
[00:20:26] <NCommander> ... since I think 1.3->2.2 was the LAST time I actually committed to the tree
[00:20:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> NCommander, okay. i'm gonna merge the two outstanding PRs, fix the Home link at the bottom of the page, and roll it out here in a couple hours then.
[00:20:47] <NCommander> yay
[00:20:54] <cmn32480> wait.. you said tomorrow
[00:21:04] <NCommander> cmn32480, it's technically tomorrow UTC

[02:25:23] <Deucalion> NCommander, we have flood control set in the ircd.conf - I can dial it in harder
[02:25:30] <chromas> I think it's more like ~15 or so lines within whatever time and it boots from the whole server
[02:26:03] <Deucalion> ircd.conf flood control does not boot it just silently stops relaying messages in channels :)
[02:26:14] <chromas> Must've changed it
[02:26:54] <chromas> Set it to 1 message per minute. This isn't Twitter
[02:27:33] <Deucalion> It's a black art to get the line right so genuine users don't get quieted or booted - particularly here where people like to paste lots of code snippets and the like

[02:28:39] <cmn32480> taht may resolve the issue
[02:28:57] <cmn32480> nickserved gets you no quiet
[02:29:25] <cmn32480> 5 seconds from login to first line in the chan for un reg'd
[02:29:32] <cmn32480> or 3 seconds
[02:29:43] <cmn32480> the bots that are spammy are generally in and out in under 3 seconds
[02:29:51] <Deucalion> I can set brutal limits on unregistered nicks separately - just means the bot writer gets to add a nickserv reg line or two to the script.... unless we go full on confirm your email reg before valid - which I'd rather not do
[02:30:19] <NCommander> Deucalion, I'd honestly be OK w/ that
[02:30:20] <NCommander> TBH
[02:30:31] <cmn32480> the odds of an IRC spam bot writer having the bot reg w/ nickserv are pretty slim, I shoudl think

[02:31:14] <NCommander> Deucalion, maybe remove #soylent off /list? Most folks should either know its here or using the webclient. Probably put menthon of it in the MOTD

[02:32:28] <cmn32480> why don't we start easy?
[02:32:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> Deucalion, take a few minutes to change debug statements to executions but yeah.
[02:32:40] <cmn32480> spam is NOT a huge problem here.. jsut annoying for the most part
[02:33:02] <Deucalion> NCommander, we have loads options for using blocklist / blacklists in ircd.conf - a lot of them block ToR exits though... and we're kinda ToR friendly
[02:33:18] <cmn32480> put in the 5 second quiet for unreg'd nicks... if there are more issues, go more draconian

[03:08:06] <_jasassin> i need some help with a question
[03:08:23] <_jasassin> what does it mean so close yet so far away?
[03:08:27] <_jasassin> what does that mean?
[03:08:47] <_jasassin> its making me angry
[03:08:50] <_jasassin> literally
[03:08:59] <_jasassin> i need to understand what that means
[03:09:28] * cmn32480 rolls off to bed.
[03:09:34] <_jasassin> no
[03:09:35] <cmn32480> ~gnight # soylent
[03:09:36] <_jasassin> stop
[03:09:37] * exec prematurely pukes a chest of sleep on #
[03:09:38] <_jasassin> answer
[03:09:45] <_jasassin> cmn
[03:09:47] <_jasassin> please dont
[03:09:52] <_jasassin> please at least try to explain
[03:09:56] <_jasassin> what that means
[03:10:13] <cmn32480> it means you are close to an answer or resolution, but how to get to that answer or resolution escapes you
[03:10:18] <cmn32480> example:
[03:10:30] <_jasassin> there is no example
[03:10:34] <cmn32480> you are on a trail... the parking lot is 500ft away
[03:10:44] <cmn32480> but there is a 300ft wide river in between
[03:10:51] <cmn32480> you are so close... yet so far away
[03:10:55] <_jasassin> ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
[03:10:58] <_jasassin> ok
[03:11:00] <_jasassin> thank you
[03:11:01] <Deucalion> When you aim to do something, prepare for it, then try to do it - yet you missed one vital, usually minor detail and fail to achieve the goal because of that trivial thing. i.e. So close in the prep, but when actioning fell short by a whisker. So close ... yet so far. You were very close in that you crossed and dotted all but one thing - but very far away because ultimately you failed the goal and have to start again
[03:11:20] <charon> suddenly you hear him, Shia LaBouef
[03:11:32] <cmn32480> anyway... I'm out
[03:11:36] <_jasassin> thanks man
[03:11:37] <cmn32480> ~gnight #soylent
[03:11:37] <_jasassin> cya
[03:11:39] * exec democratically terrorizes a tub of political correctness with #soylent
[03:11:42] <Deucalion> night cmn32480
[03:11:50] * nick hat tip cmn32480
[03:11:54] <_jasassin> now i understand
[03:12:08] <charon> ~gnight cmn32480
[03:12:10] * exec allegedly extracts a spoon of flowers from cmn32480
[03:12:24] <_jasassin> achieving a goal but falling short
[03:12:32] <_jasassin> i think
[03:12:33] <nick> jasassin, the feeling you get when trying to reach something at the back of a high shelf
[03:12:50] <_jasassin> ohhhhhh yeah
[03:12:59] <_jasassin> but i dont get that im 6'2
[03:13:13] <_jasassin> im understanding though
[03:13:17] <_jasassin> you put it in a good way too
[03:13:20] <_jasassin> thankyou guys
[03:13:27] <_jasassin> i had no idea what the fuck that meant
[03:13:31] <_jasassin> thank you
[03:13:39] <Deucalion> The shelf is 10' and you need to build a ladder... yet your instructions for ladder building miss one crucial step....
[03:14:00] <Deucalion> I hope you can be less angry about common phrases in future
[03:14:03] <_jasassin> yes i understand now
[03:14:05] <_jasassin> thank you
[03:14:47] <_jasassin> its like the fish that got away
[03:15:09] <_jasassin> he bit the hook but it didn't catch and he swims free
[03:15:12] <_jasassin> i understand now
[03:15:19] <nick> yeah, that would be an example
[03:15:23] <Deucalion> It's common parlance because it is an all too common occurrence in our lives. Usually the thing we overlook is in the "obvious" not in the new.
[03:15:43] <_jasassin> i understand
[03:15:53] <_jasassin> new is something that can hardly be overlooked i get it
[03:16:46] <_jasassin> im sorry if it was a stupid question
[03:16:51] <_jasassin> i just really didn't get it
[03:17:31] <_jasassin> i specifically logged in to find out because you are the smartest people i know
[03:17:33] <_jasassin> thank you
[03:17:50] <Deucalion> In fact I just wasted 2 hours of my life because I missed one character in a copy / paste between conf files. I looked at those conf files 100 times and only on look 101 did I see the missing character in the field that "must be right" - so I was just skimming over it. I was so close, yet so very far because without it being right, shit just flat out would not work. 1 character away close, still failed hard.
[03:18:35] <_jasassin> ohhhhhh
[03:18:41] <_jasassin> now that makes me undestand
[03:18:43] <_jasassin> so close
[03:18:48] <_jasassin> yet so far away
[03:19:24] <_jasassin> nah it still doesn't make sense
[03:19:29] <Deucalion> lol
[03:20:06] <Deucalion> then I cannot help more. I have tried to explain it 2 different ways. I therefore suck at explaining things :D
[03:20:12] <_jasassin> is it a wish that didn't happen?
[03:20:53] <_jasassin> a horseshoe that missed the ring?
[03:22:35] <_jasassin> im sorry
[03:22:39] <_jasassin> i wasted your time
[03:22:46] <_jasassin> i still dont understand what it means
[03:22:48] <_jasassin> im sorry
