[00:03:34] <SoyCow6779> has anyone considered that "pages" are not relevent when you can +/- expaned things or is it a nesseaty of bandwith
[00:38:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> SoyCow6779, it's a load on the processor/db issue. pulling more than a hundred comments at once begins to get a bit sluggish. and by a bit i mean nastily.
[00:40:11] <cmn32480> ~gday TheMightyBuzzard
[00:40:12] * exec allegedly twerks a tablespoon of tea for TheMightyBuzzard

[00:47:08] * exec explicitly prepares a wagon of ciri's bothole for #Soylent
[00:48:02] <cmn32480> ~gday paulej72
[00:48:04] * exec retroactively allocates a photograph of Beer-brand beer for paulej72
[00:48:14] <paulej72> I have been fine
[00:48:29] <paulej72> fixing errors in the code today
[00:48:40] <cmn32480> i was hanging access points...
[00:49:20] <cmn32480> and for the evening's entertainment, I get to put mounting kits together for the next batch
[00:49:23] <chromas> Sounds like the points went over your head
[00:49:38] <paulej72> XD
[00:49:55] <cmn32480> lol
[00:49:58] <paulej72> POE for the access points?
[00:50:59] <cmn32480> yeah
[00:51:09] <cmn32480> no other way to do it
[00:51:20] <cmn32480> well... no cost effective other way
[00:52:01] <paulej72> get out the scissor lift to power cycle the AP that is having a hissy fit
[00:52:24] <cmn32480> exactly
[00:52:32] <cmn32480> instead of a remote shut/no shut
[00:53:14] <cmn32480> I can't remember the last time we put stuff in that wasn't poe
[00:54:07] <cmn32480> even our heated NEMA enclosures are PoE
[00:54:28] <paulej72> our first biulding wide setup was one AP per two hallways that was distributed via leaky coax
[00:55:15] <paulej72> replaced with a shit-ton of Aps with poe
[00:55:47] * chromas pinches the coax with too-tight staples
[00:56:34] <cmn32480> the good old days....
[00:56:57] <cmn32480> greater speed = lower distance
[00:57:03] <paulej72> this coax is about 2cm in diameter with a .25cm inner core and a thick metal jacket with cutouts every few cms
[00:57:15] <cmn32480> i remember it
[00:57:25] <cmn32480> that was 900MHz stuff usually
[00:57:30] <paulej72> the cutouts let the signal through to the core
[00:57:40] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Brain Scans Used on People Conducting "Illicit" Activity - http://sylnt.us - longer-lines-ahead
[00:57:52] <paulej72> could not pinch it with a staple easily
[00:58:04] * chromas grunts
[00:58:07] <chromas> MOAR POWER
[00:58:18] * cmn32480 hooks chromas to the car battery
[00:58:28] <SoyCow6779> TheMightyBuzzard: really ? ok , makes me think that more of use should be named bobby
[00:59:01] <paulej72> now we use the same cable for our femtocell repeaters
[00:59:13] <cmn32480> SoyCow6779 - it has to do with the DB calls and the way the comments gete pulled
[00:59:29] <cmn32480> but that stuff is a little out of my wheelhouse
[00:59:58] * cmn32480 points all questions toward pj
[01:00:31] <SoyCow6779> cmn32480: I get it that;'s why I made the drop tables joke
[01:00:59] * cmn32480 missed it completely...
[01:01:25] <paulej72> well slashdot would archive old stories as static pages. all of our pages are in the db, and we use Mysql NDB cluster which needs to load everything into memeory
[01:02:00] <SoyCow6779> xkcd is always your freind in IT :)
[01:02:23] * chromas rolls little bobby onto the wheelhouse table
[01:02:27] <paulej72> Alos NDB requires that queries be optimized for the way it does things
[01:03:08] <chromas> Should port it to xmlsql
[01:03:26] -!- Andronas [Andronas!~Andronas@152.7.lv.zot] has joined #Soylent
[01:03:31] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: I know nothing of this but what does that mean, I mean it is all text so...
[01:04:39] <SoyCow6779> * chromas snort
[01:05:03] <paulej72> MySQL NDB is the table structure that allows for splitting the data over multiple machines. Basiclaly Raid 1 for DBs
[01:06:02] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: oh so basicly db over cloud?
[01:06:08] * cmn32480 digs in the hotel fridge and is greatful that he hit the grocery store and bought beer
[01:06:32] <Andronas> what kinda beer?
[01:06:57] <paulej72> it does not like certain queries. certain joins and other queries do not run very fast. some of our queries need to be fixed. We just ran into a new set due to adding 2 new nexuses to the site
[01:07:31] <SoyCow6779> Andronas: doesn't matter when your in a location where you can by beer at the corner store
[01:07:46] <paulej72> bunch of the queries to select stories check which nexus it is in
[01:08:02] <paulej72> they are shitting themselves a bit now.
[01:10:00] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: ok thanks I don't know most of the dba stuff but your expenation sort of made sense to me, why are you automating storey sellection though?
[01:10:03] <paulej72> My one fix did not help as it trys to seclect 52 stories from a set of storyids that are part of a set of nexuses. the problem is for most of the queures the whole set of story ids need to be checked just to pull 52 new ones. The limits and the ordering stuff make the query suck ass.
[01:10:40] <paulej72> I think the story stuff is what the back end pulls up to do certain tasks.
[01:11:11] <paulej72> because the queries are taking 15 or more seconds, but you don't see it on the front end
[01:13:43] <cmn32480> Andronas - Leinenkugels Summer Shandy
[01:14:28] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: sorry I'm tying to get it but the question of beer is taking my brain.. laker ice FTW!
[01:14:49] <paulej72> no problem
[01:15:22] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: thank you though
[01:17:58] <SoyCow6779> well I'm sitting around drinking laker ice thinking I might have lung cancer and listening to the conan soundtrack, what's everyone else up to?
[01:19:07] <cmn32480> missing the old Cisco bulk 10-packs....
[01:19:25] <cmn32480> so much easier to deal with than the individually packed crap
[01:19:40] <cmn32480> and are you waiting on test results? or just speculating?
[01:29:05] <SoyCow6779> cmn32480: no I can verify I am drinking laker ice and listening to conan, as for 10 packs of cisco up here in canada we only dealt with novell, I'm trying to make an IT joke and failing
[01:29:57] <paulej72> cmn32480: dont cut yourself on the excess packaging
[01:30:59] <cmn32480> death by 1000 paper cuts
[01:31:34] * paulej72 trashes any paper that comes with my computer items
[01:32:01] <cmn32480> you have the outer box (contains 5 AP's)
[01:32:07] <cmn32480> the inner individual box
[01:32:12] <cmn32480> the AP is in a bag
[01:32:21] <cmn32480> with 4 rubber caps oveer the antenna connections
[01:32:29] <cmn32480> in a cardboard tray
[01:32:53] <cmn32480> the ceiling grid clip is in a baggie with a corrosion inhibitor
[01:33:03] <cmn32480> the mounting bracket is in a bag
[01:33:08] <cmn32480> with a bag of screws
[01:33:12] <cmn32480> sheesh
[01:34:05] <chromas> Are the screws individually shrinkwrapped?
[01:34:13] <cmn32480> no.
[01:34:19] <cmn32480> but the baggie is stapled shut
[01:37:15] <paulej72> I tend to rip small ziplocks open as it is quicker espically when I will not need the bag after opening it
[01:37:34] <paulej72> works for stapled ones too :)
[01:38:21] <paulej72> save money on the assembly line have the end user assemble it
[01:38:44] <cmn32480> i am currently oppening each box and removeing all the excess, and drilling the holes in the mounting bracket so it will accept 1/4x20 hardware
[01:38:47] <paulej72> I saw some toys that you bascially did all of the assembly yourself
[01:38:53] <cmn32480> #smake cisco
[01:38:53] * MrPlow smakes cisco upside the head with a bungalow of stroopwafels
[01:39:40] <paulej72> what, you don't want to use a 4-40 screw to mount your AP to the ceiling?
[01:39:52] <cmn32480> no
[01:39:59] <cmn32480> f**king pain in the ass they are
[01:55:20] <SoyCow6779> paulej72: no a dozen servers and a class C no just no

[16:53:08] <FatPhil> that's what I'm doing with my code as we speak...
[16:53:47] <FatPhil> unit tests are evil, I wish I'd never written them.
[16:54:53] <Bytram> FatPhil: righto! MUCH better to have your customers run into the bugs and deal with them later! ;)
[16:54:58] <mechanicjay> Everytime I think, "This time, on this project, I'm going to do test-driven development" Then I come to senses and dont.
[16:56:20] <Bytram> TDD seems to work for me... invariably, when I have trouble coming up with what to expect in a certain combination of inputs, that's the very place where the code is at its weakest.
[16:56:46] <Bytram> "Strive to understand your problem, don't try to solve it, a fully-stated problem embodies its solution."
[16:57:59] <paulej72> GIGO
[17:03:36] <FatPhil> one problem with TDD is that it persuades you to write the smallest amount of code to pass the tests, which can leave some corner cases forgotten about.

[22:06:41] <cmn32480> each warehouse rack is 8 ft wide with a 10 foot aisle
[22:06:58] <cmn32480> so some of they are off between 20 and 60 feet
[22:07:05] <Bytram> ~gday paulej72

[22:10:10] <cmn32480> this is one of those thigns that since the building is still under construction.... I get to call the subcontractor and bitch slap them until they fix it
[22:10:21] <paulej72> ok even better, just put all the APs in one corner, they are wireless so it shouldn't matter

[22:16:04] <Bytram> ;)
[22:16:26] * Bytram hums title song of Caddyshack
[22:16:43] <paulej72> Well my building is built like a Faraday cage. It blocks most signals such that you need to be near a window to get cell srvice even on the upper floors
[22:17:12] <Bytram> just need a longer extension cord?
[22:17:15] <mechanicjay> paulej72: was that a design choice or just a happenstance?
[22:17:30] <paulej72> happenstance.
[22:17:51] <paulej72> I think there is a lot of rebar in the concrete
[22:18:08] <mechanicjay> my Grandma's house was the biggest RF blocker I've ever seen. All the interior walls were metal lath plaster.

[22:18:41] <mechanicjay> :)
[22:18:48] <cmn32480> inside and out
[22:18:49] <paulej72> they might have used metal lath in the exterior but I am not sure
[22:19:00] <cmn32480> stucco outside?
[22:19:16] <paulej72> Is it Amazon
[22:19:29] <cmn32480> nope... but they are across the parking lot
[22:19:57] <paulej72> no brick facade, but they may have used some metal as support
[22:20:12] <paulej72> seen it in ohter buildings
[22:35:44] <Bytram> note to self: It can be quite uncomfortable when one sneezes while eating rice... and kernels come out your nose. :P
[22:36:55] <cmn32480> if you butter the rice... it will slide out easier

[22:42:24] <paulej72> my hand slipped
[22:42:41] <takyon> I usually swap sciencedaily with the actual source plus add the article/DOI at the bottom
[22:42:49] <takyon> but what is the issue u see fnord666
[22:43:07] <Fnord666> The article has the right journal refs at the bottom, but the article itself is an entirely different story.
[22:43:19] <Fnord666> if you follow the link to sciencedaily
[22:43:35] <paulej72> fake_news--
[22:43:35] <Bender> karma - fake_news: -1
[22:44:16] <Fnord666> :)
[22:44:18] <cmn32480> lol
[22:45:03] <Fnord666> the journal reference at the bottom makes sense and is consistent with the article
[22:45:11] <Fnord666> or with the summary I mean
[22:45:32] <Fnord666> but the article itself....
[22:45:45] <cmn32480> so.. original source pooched it?
[22:45:51] <Fnord666> searching the site for some of the keywords came ip empty also
[22:46:40] <Fnord666> I think sciencedaily has got something wrong
