[00:03:28] <charon_> interesting
[00:04:26] <Bytram> charon_: glad you like it!
[00:04:39] <Bytram> if you haven't noticed, I have a thing for "space stuff"
[00:05:14] <Bytram> Astronomy -- where 500 million years is a "young" star, and 1 million light years is "nearby" =)
[00:05:21] <charon_> i sorta did notice. i get a charge out of it too
[00:06:18] <charon_> i found it amazing that they found those tiny little causes. like the screw-head with a burr on it
[00:10:41] <Bytram> that is pretty amazing when you realize how freaking HUGE a space shuttle is!
[00:10:46] <Bytram> well, was. :(
[00:11:37] <Bytram> ~time x
[00:11:38] <exec> Wednesday, 15 March 2017 @ 12:11 am UTC - Coordinated Universal Time
[00:11:56] <paulej72> I was just Udvar Hazy and got to see Discovery. I want soooooo much to jump the barrier, run up and touch it.
[00:14:15] <charon_> they don't let you touch it? lame
[00:14:47] <Bytram> If SpaceX were more reliable on their launches, I would find some way to beg, borrow, steal my way down to FL to see a Falcon Heavy launch.
[00:15:09] * Bytram has never seen a rocket launch (unless you count an Estes rocket)
[00:15:44] <charon_> i hear it's pretty awe inspiring
[00:19:48] <Bytram> I HEAR YOU SHOULD USE EAR PROTECTION, TOO!
[00:19:52] <Bytram> ;)
[00:23:34] <charon_> i recall reading a story about Walter Cronkite at a launch. the window looking out at the launchpad was wobbling in its frame from the massive sound. he reached forward to hold it in place and an engineer told him not to. apparently it was designed to wobble like that and if you tried to constrain it, it would shatter
[00:26:17] <Bytram> that i would believe. much like how the wings on a passenger jet are intended to "flap" -- got the heebee geebees first time i saw it happen on a DC-10, until I thought things through.

[02:37:27] <cmn32480> quite delightful
[02:42:08] <clorox|2> Sounds like it involved some sort of special sauce.
[02:42:50] <cmn32480> nah.... the BBQ sauce wasn't all that

[03:10:28] * Deucalion reminds self to clean out laptop fan more frequently. Disassembled and cleaned this evening... Idle temps dropped ~20C Fully loaded temps down >30C. The thing was running 80C just watching the YTube and hitting thermal shutdown from time to time... now it barely runs the fan :D
[03:11:13] * Deucalion reminds self to not use the latptop 24/7 as it's a complete and utter pain in the ass to strip down and clean.... soooooo many fiddly screws and clips :(
[03:11:17] <Andronas> my fan never goes below a certain level even after i cleaned it and reapplied thermal paste
[03:13:08] <Deucalion> I was thinking I#d need to reapply paste but this lappy has a single copper heat pipe firmly secured to the processor with a sticky pad thing that then runs ~5" all the way over to the other side of the chassis where the heat exchanger and fan are... decided to leave the pipe to processor joint alone as it seemed almost permanently joined. Glad I did :D
[03:13:11] <Andronas> Deucalion: what are your idle temps?
[03:14:23] <Deucalion> Idling about 37C with ambient about 21C. On load it gets up to high 40s. Previously it was ramping up over 80C on load.
[03:15:17] <Deucalion> It is just an ancient i3 Core Duo though.... so it's not exactly a heat machine :D
[03:15:50] <Deucalion> My browsey, maily, comms thingamy... doesn't do any real heavy work.
[03:16:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> mine's sitting at a chilly 19C right now.

[03:18:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> it does get up to ~45C under full load on every core though.
[03:18:52] <Deucalion> About 5 - 6 years old now and having run so hot all the plastic clippy bits have lost some of their springyness... I think if I have to tear it down in a year or so there is going to be snappage rather than flex. Still... 5 - 6 (and counting) years for a bargain basement <£200 laptop ain't bad going. :D
[03:19:07] <Deucalion> What's your ambient temp TheMightyBuzzard ?
[03:19:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> thermometer on the wall says 67F
[03:19:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> which it stays at year round
[03:19:44] <Deucalion> What is it?
[03:20:05] <Deucalion> It stays the same all year round cos you live underground or in a cave :P

[03:25:55] <Deucalion> I'm retiring my laptop from daily service and going back to the desktop, just to avoid having to pull the thing apart for cleaning again, what an absolute tart it was.... ohh, this ribbon clip slides... yet this one kinda flips up, if you look at it right etc etc.... never again
[03:25:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> heat i can handle. my sweat glands work fine. cold i wake up one big muscle knot from.

No wait... there will be no next time... never disassembling a laptop again. Or a fucking printer for that matter... just for
[03:30:11] <Deucalion> the record.
[03:31:02] <Andronas> i have taken apart and put back together at least 100

[03:33:10] * cmn32480 fails in his fight against sleep
[03:33:15] <Deucalion> Andronas, it just takes so much patience and knowing exactly where the little spring clips are, what direction to pry them and in what order... different every time... and then some sadist bastard does things like stick the keyboard down with sticky pads too... just for that.... you almost got to break it before it comes away feeling. Just no. No more.
