[00:31:48] * jasassin farts so long and so hard the channel is gonna stink for at least 30 minutes
[00:39:29] <takyon> the Trump press conference is at 11 am Eastern time tomorrow
[00:46:31] <FatPhil> 2016's greatest downside is that it's ruined every humorous topical news quiz show. You're guaranteed a Trump story, a Brexit story, and probably some death.
[00:47:09] <FatPhil> There's one we used to watch called "8 out of 10 cats" which has a round where you have to name the topics most talked about in the last week. It's herp-derp simple now.
[00:48:51] <nick> '8 out of 10 cats' had some good moments, but in general i think it was pretty simple anyway
[00:51:16] <takyon> what a shame
[00:51:28] <FatPhil> yeah, third choice was always the great british dance survivor
[00:51:49] <FatPhil> factor
[00:52:00] <FatPhil> whichever was in season at the time.
[00:52:44] <nick> i feel like shows like that have helped us get to this point, trivializing and laughing at important issues, oversimplification, and with the target audience for a show like that, it's the most in-depth as the viewers get in most of the issues
[00:52:50] <nick> but it's all just a joke really so fuck it
[00:53:46] <FatPhil> I used to watch it for Jon Richardson, I love his deadpan delivery and pedantic attitude.
[00:54:02] <FatPhil> but alas he's gone, so there's very little reason at all to watch it now.
[00:54:11] <nick> yeah, i enjoyed much of his stuff
[00:55:07] <FatPhil> Sean Lock was good cheese to his chalk
[00:55:57] <nick> i used to enjoy his stuff too, but there was also a few time where he came across as an asshole without apparent intent for comedic effect
[00:56:19] <FatPhil> Jimmy Carr is so unbelievably predictable, he telegraphs his jokes a mile, and even his one-liner comebacks I beat him to quite often.
[00:56:50] <nick> the countdown episodes they did were quite fun
[00:57:10] <FatPhil> The chaotic aspect to them did amuse
[01:00:08] <nick> FatPhil, did you watch 'charlie brooker's 2016 wipe'?
[01:00:12] <FatPhil> I think only Jon, and the Countdown staff, took them even vaguely seriously.
[01:00:28] <FatPhil> ooooh, I'll grab a torrent tomorrow, and we'll watch that - thanks for mentioning it!
[01:00:32] <FatPhil> Big fan of brooker
[01:05:12] <jasassin> like the jawas say... UUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
[01:05:19] <nick> it was pretty good, a bit trump heavy but overall it did a reasonable job i think

[05:10:25] <takyon> it's time for GOLDEN SHOWER
[05:10:36] <takyon> GOLDEN TRUMP GOLDEN TRUMP
[05:14:48] <nick> takyon, good work on making that a tolerable read
[05:15:06] <takyon> you're welcome
[05:15:22] <takyon> what about it was intolerable? the fact that many sites will not reprint the text?
[05:15:57] <takyon> for example: "NPR is not detailing the contents of the brief because it remains unverified"
[05:15:59] <takyon> vs.
[05:16:22] <takyon> "TRUMP's (perverted) conduct in Moscow included hiring the presidential suite of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where he knew President and Mrs OBAMA {whom he hated] had stayed on one of their official trips to Russia, and defiling the bed where they had slept by employing a number of prostitutes to perform a 'golden showers' (urination) show in front of him"
[05:16:45] <takyon> brb
[05:16:49] <nick> it was about as unbiased/honest as the story is going to be done
[05:17:55] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Graph Isomorphism Strikes Back - http://sylnt.us - quasi-correct-algorithm
[05:21:42] <charon> if the hotel was known to be bugged by the FSB, why would the Obamas stay there?
[05:24:17] <takyon> they don't have a choice?
[05:25:07] <nick> they wanted the loyalty club points
[05:25:42] <chromas> Watergate 2: The Golden Years
[05:27:05] <takyon> lol chromas
[05:27:21] <nick> is there anything in the docs saying when trump is supposed to have done this?
[05:29:00] <takyon> i only got to page 3
[05:29:51] <charon> the pdf says the golden shower event probably happened in 2013
[05:30:20] <chromas> America, fuck yeah!
[05:30:48] <chromas> The current year: when cartoon frogs and peeing is serious business
[05:31:22] <takyon> cartoon frogs was last year
[05:31:33] <nick> i just skimmed an article which is saying trump did it in both moscow and st petersberg
[05:31:35] <chromas> oh yeah. it was a different current year
[05:31:43] <takyon> check out page 7
[05:32:06] <charon> that weird, but honestly pretty tame. how tough is it to stand up and say, "yeah, i like piss-play. so what?"
[05:32:21] <chromas> trump-shrug.gif
[05:34:32] <nick> my opinion is the whole thing is meaningless and is just being put out there to continue the russia narrative, and sex sells.
[05:35:10] <nick> 'hacking' is boring now, been hearing about it for months with no actual revelations or new information
[05:36:04] <takyon> where are revelations supposed to come from? leaks?
[05:36:12] <chromas> :D
[05:36:28] <takyon> the people involved did not want to disclose this stuff before the election... to trump's relief
[05:36:53] <chromas> pun, two, three, four
[05:36:58] <nick> they've been playing a risky game with the whole 'russia interfered with the election, but everything is still legit, but they were really serious and did a lot of things, which didn't change anything, but they almost did'
[05:37:25] <charon> page seven start the real meat of it. collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian gov't. that's what we old fashioned people like to call treason
[05:37:42] <Fnord666> takyon's on a roll
[05:38:06] <nick> considering the russia angle was supposed to undermine the faith in the democratic institutions, by trump getting elected, the people most disillusioned and angry have been placated by having their symbol win
[05:38:34] <nick> so russia failed miserably in their intentions, whilst also succeeding, except they didn't actually change anything.
[05:39:19] * nick goes to page 7
[05:40:13] <takyon> the whole "Russia is trying to make democracy look bad" angle was speculation and an unimportant goal IMO
[05:40:27] <takyon> getting Trump elected is a far better prize.
[05:40:34] <charon> yep
[05:41:04] <takyon> Putin did not want Clinton in there. Clinton antagonized him back when she was Sec. of State, and her record suggests she would continue business as usual U.S. policies and sanctions towards Russia
[05:41:42] <nick> i don't disagree at all
[05:41:46] <takyon> Trump on the other hand has been friendly towards Putin and Russia, and wants to build up the relationship. This can be seen throughout the campaign, and months before the leaks
[05:42:24] <charon> damn. last paragraph of page 9
[05:42:28] <nick> to be fair, everyone was in on it... the russians wanted trump, the media couldn't pass up giving him air time
[05:42:29] <takyon> and I don't even disagree with Trump building up a better relationship with Russia. Because China should be the real focus of U.S. foreign policy, and antagonism with Russia is unnecessary
[05:42:49] <nick> and the clinton campaign themselves had the agenda to promote trump, thinking he'd be the easiest candidate to beat
[05:43:18] <takyon> the U.S. has proven time and time again that it does not care about the things Russia sees as part of its sphere of influence. This can be seen with Crimea, Georgia, Syria, etc.
[05:43:51] <takyon> of course, Syria was also a no-go because of Afghanistan/Iraq/Libya fatigue
[05:44:09] <nick> although not unusual, using overt/covert propaganda and such to sway an election to a US favoured candidate is not unheard of.
[05:45:21] <nick> i think that's selling it short, they do care, but you have to pick your battles and stage it right
[05:48:45] * chromas dons foil hat
[05:49:04] <chromas> they put clinton in as teh dem candidate because they wanted trump to win
[05:49:29] <takyon> it has been clear that what the Russians did in Syria was deplorable. But at least it was the Russians doing it and not us (U.S.)
[05:49:51] <nick> agreed
[05:50:09] <nick> although that same focus could be placed on happenings in Yemen
[05:50:18] <nick> but that's in another sphere of influence
[05:50:19] <takyon> we were called out on that chemical weapons disposal deal. U.S., Russia, Syria cooperated to make it happen
[05:50:38] <takyon> and then a couple years later, Assad uses chemical weapons repeatedly
[05:50:42] <takyon> oops
[05:51:10] <nick> according to the wiki on the chemical weapons thing, every side has used them in syria
[05:51:16] <nick> last time i looked at it anyway
[05:52:37] * chromas edits the wiki
[05:53:06] * takyon arrests chromas for cybercrimes against humanity
[05:54:27] <nick> i will certainly not defend the actions of people who use chemical weapons, and i will certainly not defend putin or assad, but there is very much selective reporting on it
[05:59:31] <nick> if it wasn't for the current war in syria, assads wikipedia page would be like 2 paragraphs
[06:01:42] <takyon> we need a deplorable IRC command
[06:02:05] <takyon> that goes "That's deplorable! $string is deplorable!" and counts how many times each string (user) has been called deplorable
[06:02:18] <charon> #socialist Putin
[06:02:18] <MrPlow> Putin, you're a socialist!
[06:02:32] <takyon> I know but we need this upgrade
[06:02:40] <takyon> it's going to be a wild 4-8 years
[06:03:01] <charon> i made a bet with a co-worker that Trump will not last a year in office
[06:03:29] <takyon> not a great bet IMO. I think he can last the full term
[06:03:35] <charon> he'll be impeached and either resign or be forced to step down
[06:03:41] <nick> i assume he's going to go the distance, if only for one term as a useful idiot of sorts
[06:04:04] <charon> with information like this being revealed before he even takes office?
[06:04:23] <takyon> as long as it's not illegal it doesn't matter
[06:04:41] <takyon> I heard it called treason but... if he wants to drag it out, he can drag it out beyond 1 year
[06:04:51] <nick> i assume this russia shit is supposed to be a reminder to him that while he may be president, he doesn't actually control foreign policy... he will make efforts to prove he's not on side with 'anti-american' forces
[06:05:03] <nick> so despite the rhetoric, more NATO
[06:05:25] <takyon> I highly doubted Trump's tease of pulling out of NATO
[06:05:33] <charon> i need to look back at that article about the emoluments clause of the constitution and the unequivocal ways that Trump would be breaking it
[06:05:39] <takyon> although events in Turkey would seem to make a NATO collapse much more likely
[06:06:11] <nick> that may come, but not anytime soon in my opinion
[06:06:19] <nick> not during Trump's presidency at any rate
