[01:24:53] * exec slowly penetrates an XFS volume of linux with #soylent
[01:28:19] <Deucalion> ~gday cmn32480 hobblalot
[01:28:21] * exec transphobically launches a ⅓ cup of vespian gas toward cmn32480
[01:28:37] <cmn32480> lol
[01:28:39] <cmn32480> how goes Deucalion
[01:30:34] <Deucalion> aight, just scaring myself how much I forgot in just 2 years. You nested up at home now or still out and about?
[01:30:56] -!- michael [michael!~michael@2406:e001:1:ynrv:ulqj:hhlo:zgtw:rijq] has joined #Soylent
[01:31:13] <cmn32480> Toronto, Ontario, Canadia
[01:31:57] <cmn32480> spent the last 7 hours and change in the car
[01:32:11] <cmn32480> couldn't bring myself to drive to gt dinner... ordered in
[01:35:23] <Deucalion> after 7+ hours in a car I'd want grapes of pure nirvana dropped effortlessly into my mouth by vestal virgins... about 4 hours on the road and I'm going cross eyed and my neck refuses to turn left lol
[01:41:43] <cmn32480> it could be worse. at least it was my own car
[01:41:59] <cmn32480> so I'm making mileage on it
[01:42:08] <cmn32480> and the seat has my butt imprint in it
[01:45:34] <cmn32480> and the farts that waft out of it are totally my brand
[01:45:38] * cmn32480 blames TheMightyBuzzard
[01:45:44] <cmn32480> just because
[01:47:28] <Deucalion> I hope mileage recompense is better there than here for miles in a private car.
[01:47:39] <cmn32480> depends on the car
[01:47:44] <cmn32480> for me, it is
[01:47:56] <cmn32480> company pays $0.40/mile
[01:48:06] <cmn32480> my car averages 37mpg
[01:48:49] <cmn32480> gas at home is about $2.25/gal
[01:49:31] <cmn32480> so in 7 miles, I've paid for the gas. and the rest is profit (minus maintenance costs)
[01:50:52] <Deucalion> have to weigh in tires, service, insurance for business use etc. Insurance is the biggie here when using a personal vehicle for work other than commuting. But I am sure you have that calc down.
[01:51:55] <cmn32480> no delta in the insurance here when using it for work use
[01:52:11] <cmn32480> if you are traveling on company business in a personal car, you are covered by the company insurance
[01:52:44] <cmn32480> service costs on my car are pretty minimal.
[01:53:38] <cmn32480> oil... fluids as needed.. .and not much else
[01:53:54] <cmn32480> for a car w/ 185k miles, she runs good
[01:55:31] <cmn32480> almost 298k km
[01:57:54] <Deucalion> Big difference then. Here if you use a personal car for company miles you pay the premium on your own personal insurance. Heh if the GBP slumps much further we won't have to bother with GBP <> USD conversions, they'll be at parity. But I'm with Mervin King (ex BOE chief on this) - the GBP needed deflating.
[01:59:04] <Deucalion> My daily is a 20 y/o Golf (Rabbit) - costs me more to road tax it than to maintain or insure being a balding bastid :)
[02:00:11] <Deucalion> Just wish they didn't tip salt on the road here all winter - the rust will kill it before anything actually mechanically goes TITSUP with it. Makes me sad
[02:00:21] <cmn32480> my yaris is 10 years old
[02:01:16] <cmn32480> i think the same thing
[02:01:27] <cmn32480> if they dind't salt so damn much, i'd be in better shape
[02:04:06] <Deucalion> Is it wrong to get attached to utilitarian things such as vehicles? Thinking on it, I've had this vehicle longer than any relationship I've managed to maintain. I'm not sure if that something about me, the car, or some profound insight on the stupdity of a consumer society lol
[02:04:33] <cmn32480> the last part
[02:04:39] <cmn32480> the stupidity thing
[02:04:58] <cmn32480> is the right answe
[02:05:00] <cmn32480> r
[02:07:07] <Deucalion> In our minds perhaps. I just hate chucking stuff away that can be be repaired with a little time. Then get annoyed that my own time is so monopolised by utter bullshit waste of time shit that I can't find time to do that.
[02:07:24] <cmn32480> hehe
[02:07:25] <cmn32480> yeah
[02:07:47] <cmn32480> I'm lucky... my car (knock on wood), hs been exceptional given the mileage
[02:09:15] <cmn32480> I replaced an alternator, water pump, tires (twice), brakes (once, but they need done again), and the usual oil and other fluids
[02:09:57] <Deucalion> eh, mine is only at 75K miles - about 3K a year given its age... it really is a shopping trolley. Meanwhile the company provided van is getting 1 - 1.5K miles per week....
[02:10:38] <cmn32480> heh
[02:10:48] <cmn32480> I'll do 1500miles this week

[02:51:49] <SirFinkus> (don't tell Deucalion)
[02:51:59] <SirFinkus> oh fuck, I just highlighted him
[02:52:25] <cmn32480> don't worry... TheMightyBuzzard can't read
[02:52:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> wut?
[02:52:40] <cmn32480> nothin'
[02:52:46] <SirFinkus> I'm starting another OFFICIAL SOYLENT NEWS GROUP without board meeting approval
[02:53:00] <cmn32480> #smake sirfinkus
[02:53:00] * MrPlow smakes sirfinkus upside the head with a small trout
[02:53:06] <SirFinkus> it's not even in the minutes

[02:53:44] <cmn32480> shit.. takes an act of god to get a staff mtg around here
[02:54:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> s'fine. i'll see if i can catch NCommander or paulej72 around to approve my script for use on live and we can get some new nexuses up whenever
[02:54:25] <SirFinkus> actually, a bit curious
[02:54:37] <SirFinkus> do we have like an amazon affiliate link?
[02:54:47] <SirFinkus> might be worth looking into
[02:55:07] <SirFinkus> disclose it in any story it's used of course
[02:55:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> staff meeting! my house! right now! anyone not attending is fired! byob.
[02:55:47] <SirFinkus> that'd be a load off a lot of people's backs
[02:55:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> bmyob too
[02:56:14] <SirFinkus> you have to supply the fried catfish though
[02:56:16] <cmn32480> sweet... I'm fired!
[02:56:40] <SirFinkus> and airfare/lodging
[02:56:48] <cmn32480> right
[02:56:53] <TheMightyBuzzard> hafta wait for it to thaw. it's currently taking up an entire freezer.
[02:57:06] <SirFinkus> I'm not a snob, I'll sleep on a couge
[02:57:07] <SirFinkus> *couch
[02:57:40] <cmn32480> that little compartment at the top don't count
[02:57:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> roomie's out of town, you can have his bed as long as you don't have wetting issues.
[02:57:56] <cmn32480> he does
[02:58:21] <SirFinkus> what about masturbation? I WILL need to relax a bit
[02:58:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> s'at the far end of the house from me, whadda i care?
[02:58:53] <SirFinkus> if you could point a discreet corner, I could use that too
[02:59:09] <cmn32480> on the pillow
[02:59:24] <SirFinkus> I'll leave the webcam on as a courtesy of course
[02:59:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> i was gonna say just grab some of his laundry off the floor
[03:00:10] <cmn32480> that'd work
[03:00:25] <SirFinkus> so this amazon affiliate thing, I'm thinking it could work for the book club, only use the link for those stories etc
[03:00:29] <SirFinkus> and disclose it
[03:00:41] <SirFinkus> a few extra shekels
[03:00:47] <SirFinkus> I dunno
[03:01:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> possibly. hafta get NCommander, Deucalion, and mrcoolbp to weigh in on it
[03:01:24] <cmn32480> f**k the book club.. put it on the front page
[03:01:38] <cmn32480> i'd use it
[03:01:57] <cmn32480> idea has saome merit
[03:02:05] <cmn32480> SirFinkus++
[03:02:05] <Bender> karma - sirfinkus: 45
[03:02:16] <cmn32480> sirstinkus++
[03:02:16] <Bender> karma - sirstinkus: 1
[03:02:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean it's a pretty valid use for it so long as we disclose it very visibly.
[03:02:50] <SirFinkus> provide 2 links for each of the book club selections, one with the affiliate thing, and one without just to be completely transparent
[03:03:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> sure
[03:03:54] <SirFinkus> probably don't need the two links tbh
[03:04:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> you got an @SN email address, yeah? hit up the boss guys like that and see what they think.
[03:04:25] <SirFinkus> "You can help support the site by ordering the book through our amazon affiliate link here"

[03:04:42] <Nacho> ^ 03Amazon.com Associates: The web's most popular and successful Affiliate Program
[03:04:50] <cmn32480> or ANYTHING through the link and we get a percnetage
[03:05:09] <SirFinkus> a few people will bitch of course
[03:05:14] <SirFinkus> yes, I do
[03:05:21] <SirFinkus> the sn email
[03:05:26] * TheMightyBuzzard looks at the hundreds of thousands of books in his e-library and assures everyone that they're not infringing copies
[03:05:57] <SirFinkus> I just don't want to turn it into something that appears as if it's just a money grab
[03:06:09] <SirFinkus> and I'm not sure how to present that
[03:06:14] <cmn32480> it's to help support the site...
[03:06:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> "Look, yo, you're gonna buy stuff on amazon anyway and it doesn't cost you anything extra to get amazon to kick some of the price back to us. Win/win.
[03:07:07] <SirFinkus> absolutely, but it could come across that we're running stories purely to post the link
[03:07:28] <cmn32480> the link should be on the main page.
[03:07:33] <cmn32480> not jsut to book club
[03:08:11] <SirFinkus> I'm sure it's been brought up before
[03:08:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> newp
[03:08:25] <cmn32480> this is a new one for us
[03:08:31] <cmn32480> glad you thought of it
[03:09:58] <SirFinkus> someone else would need to set the up the affiliate shit, I don't want to get involved in any of the financial shit
[03:10:08] <cmn32480> fuckers in the next room are LOUD
[03:10:30] <SirFinkus> we're planning on publishing our first book club story on nov 1st
[03:10:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> thas a mrcoolbp thing
[03:11:07] <SirFinkus> it's also probably a staff meeting thing, since affiliate links strike me as a major policy change
[03:11:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> SirFinkus, okay. bug me regularly to get the okay to add some nexuses to prod.
[03:11:24] <SirFinkus> for the book club?
[03:11:31] * cmn32480 accepts the challenge
[03:11:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> and probably politics and maybe a few others
[03:11:48] <SirFinkus> oh, and any other thoughts about the spoiler thing?
[03:11:57] <SirFinkus> that would be super nice to have
[03:12:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> not that can be ready by 11/1
[03:12:12] <cmn32480> spoiler thing?
[03:12:20] <SirFinkus> hmm, it could be put off I suppose
[03:12:41] <SirFinkus> maybe launch the club with the new features and nexuses?
[03:12:50] <SirFinkus> make it a big hullabaloo
[03:12:55] <TheMightyBuzzard> i know how/where to add it but we've got a lot to do between now and then code-wise.
[03:13:07] <SirFinkus> yeah, fair nuff
[03:13:14] <SirFinkus> it could add some spice to the release notes though
[03:13:31] <SirFinkus> did you have an eta?
[03:14:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> really we may be looking at the end of november. pj still has stuff he wants to code up for this release he hasn't started on and i got like 8 pull requests waiting approval.
[03:14:11] * SirFinkus is ignorant of release cycles
[03:14:51] <cmn32480> and menstrual cycles
[03:15:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> i think we can roll the book club out before the release though and add the spoiler tags later
[03:15:06] <SirFinkus> that's not too bad really, if you can roll spoilers into that it could be a pretty neat release event
[03:15:39] <SirFinkus> we've still got a while to nail it down
[03:15:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> you may not want to be in on this release. comments are changing significantly so some people are gonna irrationally lose their shit.
[03:15:58] <SirFinkus> I just think it'd be kind of neat to announce the club at the same time as the release
[03:16:03] <SirFinkus> aww shit
[03:16:06] <SirFinkus> sounds fun

[16:23:51] <janrinok> #weather
[16:23:51] <MrPlow> No location found for janrinok
[16:24:07] <janrinok> why has weather forgotten me?
[16:24:12] <janrinok> I am without weather...
[16:24:52] * janrinok looks out of window - there is no weather
[16:25:08] <mechanicjay> janrinok: it's not weather, it's climate!
[16:25:15] <mechanicjay> ...wait, what?
[16:25:26] * janrinok looks again, can't see climate either ...!
[16:26:08] * AndyTheAbsurd looks out window, notices that weather is 100% chance of wrecking ball
[16:26:21] <mechanicjay> Damn those <people of some other political persuasion>! Give janrinok back his weather!

[16:26:54] <TheMightyBuzzard> janrinok, ~weather and #weather don't use the same db
[16:27:00] <janrinok> probably the local French weather forecasters are on strike ....
[16:27:04] <janrinok> ah

[16:27:09] <exec> 10Paimpol, France - currently 57°F / 14°C, mostly cloudy, wind NE at 18 mph, humidity 58% - Wednesday partly cloudy (50°F:58°F / 10°C:14°C), Thursday mostly sunny (50°F:57°F / 10°C:14°C), Friday mostly cloudy (50°F:60°F / 10°C:16°C), Saturday partly cloudy (54°F:62°F / 12°C:17°C)
[16:27:22] * janrinok has found his weather - all is well in the world
[16:27:54] <janrinok> TheMightyBuzzard, thanks for that, I was going to write into Soylent and complain about something to someone ....

[16:35:15] <MrPlow> Today: Partly cloudy. Lows overnight in the low 50s. Tomorrow: Sun and a few passing clouds. High 57F. Winds ENE at 15 to 25 mph.

[16:36:23] * janrinok needs nicer weather
[16:36:51] <AndyTheAbsurd> I should write one in node.js that uses phantom.js to scrape wunderground.com
[16:37:01] <AndyTheAbsurd> It would probably break every other day, though.
[16:37:17] * janrinok is beginning to think he shouldn't have asked - js of all things
[16:38:14] <mechanicjay> just remember, everyone, you can still telnet to rainmaker.wunderground.com
[16:38:52] <janrinok> it's been a long time since anyone mentioned telnet
[16:39:33] <mechanicjay> use it all the time, mostly between my classic computers and my linux box.
[16:39:53] <AndyTheAbsurd> mechanicjay: I did not know about that; that's pretty cool.
[16:40:01] <mechanicjay> :)
[16:40:21] <janrinok> I tend to use ssh or vnc, depending on the box
[16:41:02] <mechanicjay> for the modern world, I'm all ssh, sometimes tunneling an X session if I need something graphic from the other end.
[16:41:08] <AndyTheAbsurd> yeah, use ssh for anything that's over the internet and you have administrative rights to
[16:41:37] <AndyTheAbsurd> at this point, telnet is only for things you don't have to log in to - it's just too damn easy to intercept the data.
[16:41:44] <mechanicjay> yeah, no encryption on telnet, so only anonymous services for me, or telnet to something on your local network to then run ssh from

[22:45:00] <mechanicjay> mother fucker
[22:45:23] <Deucalion> systemd-mfuckerd ?
[22:47:22] <mechanicjay> no a custom perl program at work, which does all sorts of questionable, in-advisable and just plain bat-shit things to generate a lecture schedule calendar for each course.
[22:48:16] <Deucalion> sounds ugly :(
[22:48:46] <mechanicjay> I wish it were merely ugly
[22:49:19] <mechanicjay> it combines data from a Screen scrapes, a webservice and local files to generate one of these god-forsaken things.
[22:50:17] <mechanicjay> One of the screens it used to scrape is no longer around, with no WebService to replace that data. So I hard code the right data in each and every fucking quarter.
[22:51:51] <mechanicjay> Todays adventure was learning that it can't handle 2 character long section numbers, so like CSE101A is cool, but CSE101A3 just borks out.
[22:53:09] <mechanicjay> anyway, everytime I have to touch this thing, I get super angry and want to set it on fire.
[22:54:40] <Deucalion> sounds like one of those things that you figure would be better off just being re-written from scratch, but when you do it ends up with an equally fugly mess as the result :D
[22:55:58] <mechanicjay> exactly. I'm trying to figure out how to just auto create a google calendar for each of them, jam some recuring meeting times in there and be done.
[22:56:47] <mechanicjay> it's like, this thing has almost too much error checking, where it ends up not doing the right thing 1/2 the time because some check for some edge case gets triggered when it shouldn't.
[22:58:09] <Deucalion> at least it has error checking
[22:58:53] <mechanicjay> fuck, its like 7000 likes of perl
[22:59:05] <mechanicjay> not to mention the thousands of lines in custom underlying libraries.
[23:01:01] <Deucalion> ahh yeh,,, let's just import all these libraries even though we might only use one function from them
[23:01:01] <mechanicjay> admittedly part of my problem are the weird perl language constructs of "do unless" and "this if"
[23:05:22] <Deucalion> not familiar with it. but I suppose it's just a logic test along the lines of "do while" just kinda backwards or something
[23:16:30] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Pixel OS for Raspberry Pi with Chromium Browser - http://sylnt.us - spot-on!
[23:26:19] <cmn32480> I bought too much food
[23:26:49] <cmn32480> forgot I had a half pizza in the fridge... bought a roasted chicken and a ceasar salad at costco....
[23:27:02] <cmn32480> looks like I'm a cheap date... and I'm gonna eat good!
[23:27:46] <Deucalion> cold pizza for breakfast FTW amirite??!!1one!
[23:27:58] <cmn32480> !!eleventy!!
[23:28:03] <cmn32480> sounds like a plan
[23:28:50] <Deucalion> cold pizza dipped in Encona - no need for an oven... still feels hot :)
[23:30:22] <cmn32480> ~define encona
[23:30:26] <exec> encona: unable to find definition
[23:30:40] <cmn32480> Deucalion - what is encona?
[23:33:21] <Deucalion> purveyors of hot sauce.
[23:35:08] <cmn32480> ahhhhhhh
[23:35:49] <Deucalion> They use scotch bonnets in the one I like which can be a bit overpowering both heat and flavour wise.
[23:35:59] <cmn32480> jebus
[23:36:08] <cmn32480> that's a pretty potent pepper
[23:37:18] <Deucalion> But kinda handy to keep on hand for those bland leftover takeaway foods.... provided you like chili / pepper sauces of course, not everyone does.
[23:38:14] <cmn32480> I do... just usually not of that temperature
[23:38:42] <cmn32480> not that there is anything wrong with that
[23:39:46] * cmn32480 thignks the cold pizza might be lunch in the car tomorrow instead of breakfast
[23:39:50] <Deucalion> I like the back of head sweats, but only if the chillies have some flavour rather than just being hot for the sake of being hot
[23:40:14] <cmn32480> i like to feel my tongue afterwards
[23:41:10] <cmn32480> but you are correct, taste over hot for the sake of hot
[23:41:28] <Deucalion> Can always wrap the pizza slices in foil and secure them to the engine for 30 mins of driving - no more cold pizza. Presuming you don't drive a car that has one of those all covering plastic shields over it :/
[23:41:54] <cmn32480> stop reading my mind, please
[23:42:09] <cmn32480> you may find that there are things in there that you don't like, and can't unsee!
[23:44:14] <Deucalion> I have way too many things already that I cannot unsee. My mind is a sewer of the worst of humanity. Thankfully it has no impact on me, being a cold misanthrope and all.
[23:44:41] <cmn32480> so there ARE benefits to that
[23:45:22] <Deucalion> very few unless you class "I'm not surprised" as a benefit no matter the scenario
[23:46:42] <cmn32480> so naked celebrity showing up in your bed won't surprise you?
[23:47:00] <cmn32480> <hint: it's a dude!>
[23:47:35] <Deucalion> nope, I kinda expect it... being as attractive as I am to all and sundry
[23:48:16] <Deucalion> A celebrity would get kicked to the kerb though... famous for being famous... pfft get outta here!
[23:48:22] <cmn32480> there are all those porons about the computer repair guy
[23:49:02] <Deucalion> and plumbers too right? I'm sure those are all documentaries
[23:49:05] <cmn32480> oh... and there you are listed in the credits
[23:49:18] * Deucalion jiggles
[23:49:26] <cmn32480> lol
[23:49:39] <cmn32480> that still makes me laugh
[23:50:44] <cmn32480> I hate channel planning a network that is positioned all wrong
[23:51:31] <cmn32480> ~day
[23:51:33] <Deucalion> I have absolutely no idea what you just said..... are you planning TV shows on a channel
[23:51:34] <cmn32480> ~time
[23:51:36] <exec> Wednesday, 12 October 2016 @ 7:51 pm GMT-4 - Baltimore, MD, USA
[23:52:00] <cmn32480> sorry... I'm off on the road fixing a customers f**ked wirless network
[23:52:33] <cmn32480> they laid the access points out all (^&^#_(&%ing wrong... and now I have to figure out how to un-fuck their stuff w/o moving it around
[23:53:49] <cmn32480> becasue I don't have the time to move it around.... and they dont' ahve the budget
[23:54:13] <cmn32480> so I made use of the "business center" down stairs and printed off a few copies of the floor plan to try and figure it out
[23:55:03] <cmn32480> all to be done while eating dinner, editing a few stories and answering some email
[23:55:13] <Deucalion> lol... I attended a job like that a couple months back... seemed they had just kept throwing in more access points in a very small area thinking that would solve everything. 10 APs in a small office space probably 20m x 20m.
[23:55:18] <cmn32480> and Lambasting SirFinkus on the deplorable state of the wiki
[23:55:32] <cmn32480> take down 9 of them
[23:55:39] <cmn32480> may be 8
[23:56:10] <SirFinkus> I think it's a pretty damn good wiki considering I'm the only one who edits it
[23:56:12] <SirFinkus> not bad for one guy
[23:56:36] <cmn32480> yeah.. but you ficked around the first 2 years
[23:56:42] <cmn32480> all that wasted time
[23:56:54] <Deucalion> The clients were just jumping from AP to AP continually and not able get anything done. I left it alone, turned out we didn't support their APs or somesuch get out clause. Fookin mess.
[23:57:07] <cmn32480> yep
[23:57:31] <cmn32480> yeah 20mx20m is easy.
[23:57:37] <cmn32480> 1 MAYBE 2 access points
[23:57:40] <cmn32480> tops
[23:57:56] <cmn32480> depending on number of clients
[23:58:13] <cmn32480> those are the kind of jobs I love
[23:58:26] <cmn32480> we generally get a lot more wireless business out of jobs like that
[23:59:52] <Deucalion> high density office all with laptops and 3 - 4 mobile devices each all trying to get on. They had bandwidth issues on the backhaul to the APs too. It was easily fixable but outside my company's remit.
