[00:40:01] <mythterj> FCC back up for me. Still, one arm of the gumment offering protectio while the other arm is patting me down and copying every byte just strikes me as synical at best,

[11:28:06] <weeds> what's on the agenda for today?
[11:29:04] <TheMightyBuzzard> well i was pondering some fishing but i think ima go over n help my less than handy neighbor put a freeze plug in and fix the brakes on his suv that the last guy who tried buggered up
[11:30:03] <weeds> but what about after lunch? :)
[11:30:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, pretty much. that shouldn't take more than two hours.
[11:30:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> maybe some house cleaning. roomie kinda trashed the place while i was gone.
[11:31:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> -kinda
[11:31:06] <weeds> old brakes are like old plumbing.
[11:31:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> easy to work on?
[11:32:16] <weeds> The more you try to fix them, the more you find wrong.
[11:34:44] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, this is just a pads change. last guy didn't get them in quite right cause he couldn't figure out how to use a C-clamp or something.
[11:36:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> how people can go through life not knowing how to change brake pads is beyond me.
[11:42:34] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, have you been paying attention to the whole "brakes guaranteed for life" on newer cars bullshit?
[11:44:12] <weeds> I see. Brakes for life has been done by repair shops around here for a while. The pads are "free" everything else is charged.
[11:44:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> they put ceramic brake pads on new cars nowadays so the rotors, which aren't covered by the guarantee or warranty, get worn down instead of the shoes/pads. that way they get to charge you for new rotors and labor rather than just pads/shoes.
[11:45:17] <weeds> Nice and rotors are not cheap like pads.
[11:45:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> zactly
[11:46:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> worth remembering if you happen to be in the market for a new car any time soon. make em put sane brake pads/shoes on or don't buy from that dealer.
[11:46:26] <weeds> Good advice. I don't do much work on my cars anymore. Did when I was in school.
[11:47:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> me either on my own but the simple stuff i still remember and don't mind helping a neighbor out with.
[11:47:47] <weeds> I stopped by my mechanics shop last week - good guy and a friend. He was ptting plugs in some van and had to take the intake manifold off. Not like my '69 olds delta 88!
[11:48:36] <weeds> Replaced my daughter's radiator in her jeep. Had to take the damn front end off he thing to get it out.
[11:48:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> ye gads
[11:49:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> used to be like 2-4 bolts and a couple hose clamps to do that
[11:50:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> if your olds is anything like other 60s cars you could fit two or three guys working under the hood at once and still have elbow room
[11:51:19] <weeds> yes!, I could sit on the wheel well and change the pligs. on the olds, that radiator replacement was a 20 minute job. about the same fo water pump, alternator, etc...
[11:51:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> i remember working on a buddy's late 60s dodge dart. you could literally get under the hood with the engine and have room to close it if you took the notion
[11:51:48] <weeds> pligs? plugs
[11:52:01] <weeds> ha
[11:53:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> now 60s vw bugs weren't quite as spacious for mechanics but they did have the advantage of having an engine block you could lift out by hand (assuming you're in passable shape).
[11:53:08] <weeds> The olds had some kind of charcoal filter thing and a catalytic converter. No other extra crap.
[11:53:29] <weeds> plus "it was as big as a whale."
[11:53:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> yarp
[11:55:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> hrm... believe it's nicotine time again
[12:10:01] <weeds> you now what I think about that... Visited my mom in the nursing home this AM. an barley fedd herself, can't get out of bed. Lung cancer is slowly killing her.
[12:27:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> yar. s'all good here though. i may get copd but if i wind up with cancer i'll be the first in my family to since ever.

[12:41:21] <cmn32480> I won that round
[12:41:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> yar, believe ya did.
[12:49:10] * cmn32480 goes on amazon to get his new brake pads and shoes... by the time I get back from Toronto I'm gonna need 'em
[12:50:04] <TheMightyBuzzard> heh, i doubt i'll ever need them again on my car. it mostly only goes to the lake when i go fishing and the lake's five miles away.
[12:50:33] <cmn32480> this will be the third set in 180k miles
[12:50:44] <TheMightyBuzzard> i've been doing oil changes every 1500 miles or so cause i can't bring myself to go a whole year without changing the oil.
[12:50:59] <cmn32480> I go 10k then change it
[12:51:14] <cmn32480> but I run a full synthetic because i drive a shitton
[12:51:20] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod
[12:51:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> newer engines that's what they recommend anyway
[12:51:59] <cmn32480> mine came w/ conventional
[12:52:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> 10k not synthetic
[12:52:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> least for the roomie's diesel that's what they said.
[12:52:52] <cmn32480> diesel is a different ball game
[12:53:23] <cmn32480> for newer gas engines running conventional oil, it varies between 5000 and 10000 miles
[12:53:41] <cmn32480> my car is a 2007, and was supposed to go 4500 miles between changes
[12:53:49] <cmn32480> on conventional oil
[12:54:49] <TheMightyBuzzard> yar. they're actually making shit last better lately instead of making it break easier so you throw your car away and get another.
[12:55:34] <cmn32480> when I changed to synthetic, all the recommendations were 10k
[12:58:04] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya. have been since castrol came out with syntec.
[13:11:36] <cmn32480> shoes... pads... new spring tool (old one is MIA)... lawn mower oil filer

[13:28:57] <cmn32480> I did that last winter and when I checked it the color was still good
[13:29:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> shurg. i've always changed it yearly.

[13:32:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, this guy could fuck up an anvil.
[13:32:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> he's anti-handy not just non-handy
[13:34:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> he borrowed my other neighbor's new push mower and decided to check the oil for her then goes and pours 3/4 of a quart into the thing and blows out the oil seals.
[13:35:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> also somehow managed to ruin the ends and the plug to his battery charger
[13:36:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> was out one day trying to mow 12" grass with the mulching flap down on a borrowed mower until i caught him.
[13:37:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> left his suv out over the winter with nothing but water in the radiator, which is why i have to put a freeze plug in this morning

[16:43:02] <cmn32480> don't push too hard.
[16:43:28] <cmn32480> I know I've been a slack ass
[16:43:45] <janrinok> you've been busy, and limping along
[16:44:10] <cmn32480> <groan>
[16:45:00] <janrinok> how are the tap dancing lessons coming along, anyway?
[16:45:48] <cmn32480> not too bad
[16:45:49] * janrinok wonders if 'muricans call it faucet dancing?
[16:45:51] <cmn32480> better day by day
[16:46:05] * cmn32480 only dances when the wife forces him
[16:46:39] <janrinok> and you probably don't give her the opportunity to force you to dance very often
[16:47:08] <cmn32480> she can only stand black and blue toes every once in a great while
[16:47:19] <janrinok> good point
[16:50:11] <cmn32480> I've got 2 left feet....
[16:50:20] <cmn32480> and one is in a gigantic boot
[16:52:37] <janrinok> I've heard that it doesn't affect your dancing abilities - anyone else, yes it would, but not you
[16:58:18] <janrinok> brb 15
[17:05:20] <janrinok> back
[17:08:24] <cmn32480> sure
[17:08:33] <cmn32480> insult my non-existent dancing skillset
[17:08:51] <cmn32480> I'll have you know that I have never been able to dance for crap.. and I don't really care to learn
[17:08:53] <janrinok> I thought I just had... Oh, I get it now :)
[17:09:02] <cmn32480> I'll probably break an ankle if I did
[17:09:12] <janrinok> bit like walking with scouts then?
[17:09:30] <cmn32480> doesn't ahve to be with the schouts... walking in general is a challenege most days
[17:09:39] <cmn32480> add chewing gum to that.. and it's game over!
[17:10:10] <janrinok> no wonder your bosses keep sending you away
[17:11:12] <cmn32480> they hope I get hurt on a customer site adn I can sue them so I'll quit woking hedre
[17:11:20] <janrinok> lol
[17:13:53] <cmn32480> if my walking was half as bad as my tpyoing, I'd be set for life!
[17:15:06] <janrinok> you can only dream
[17:15:49] <cmn32480> uh huh
[17:16:00] <janrinok> have you eaten yet?
[17:16:05] <cmn32480> nope
[17:16:09] <cmn32480> ordered food.. not here yet
[17:16:16] * cmn32480 IS getting grumpy
[17:16:27] * cmn32480 IS getting grumpy-er
[17:17:15] <cmn32480> what about you? you get to eat today?
[17:17:34] <cmn32480> and what fabulous thing did you whip up in the kitchen for the delight of you and S?
[17:17:43] <cmn32480> 1) tell her I said Hi!
[17:17:54] <cmn32480> 2) Hows she feeling today? better than yesterday?
[17:18:05] <janrinok> we've just finished eating dinner, I made a tajine based on N African spices et
[17:18:10] <janrinok> etc*
[17:18:52] <janrinok> S is much better thanks, and I have just shouted your 'hi' - she sends an 'hello' back!
[17:19:35] <janrinok> lunch was a mackerel salad
[17:19:37] * cmn32480 giggles
[17:19:44] <cmn32480> pretty girls always make me do that
[17:19:59] <cmn32480> woooo fancy!
[17:20:00] <janrinok> I have to agree with you there :)
[17:20:11] <cmn32480> sounds like I need to hire you as the cook in my house
[17:20:22] <cmn32480> you do chicken nuggets and spaghetti?
[17:21:03] <janrinok> funny thing is, I've now been asked by several of the people that we know to show them how I cook the meals that I produce. Nurses, home-helpers, etc
[17:21:26] * cmn32480 smells a new business opportunity for Janrinok
[17:21:44] <janrinok> There is nothing clever about it, just a case of having the confidence to try different things.
[17:22:06] * cmn32480 checks that and finds it lacking in his children
[17:22:28] <janrinok> Once you learn the basic combinations of ingredients for Chinese, Middle Eastern, African cuisine, you just apply them to what you have
[17:23:00] <janrinok> Chinese is base on Soy sauce, garlic and ginger.
[17:24:21] <janrinok> just put chopped veggies in a pan with a bit of hot oil, add crushed garlic and chopped ginger, and once they are colouring nicely, add a good splash of soy sauce.
[17:24:50] <janrinok> server and eat - but remember to give them a posh sounding name.
[17:25:23] <janrinok> people start a meal with their eyes and nose, pick bright colours, the smell of garlic and ginger, and it's all done
[17:29:02] <janrinok> you'll have to go and eat now ....
[17:30:43] <janrinok> ~weather

[17:31:01] <janrinok> it's going to be a cool night
[17:35:37] <cmn32480> time to set fire to the couches?
[17:35:47] <janrinok> we burnt them last year
[17:36:40] <cmn32480> burning you milk crate won't help then... just poison the air
[17:37:01] <janrinok> nah, plastic always smells bad too
[17:38:01] <cmn32480> yeah...
[17:38:11] <cmn32480> ah well... blankets and hot tea it is!
[17:38:34] <janrinok> yep, another exciting winter for us poor pensioners
[17:39:42] <cmn32480> quiet.... watching the snow fall
[17:40:18] <janrinok> it's snowing where you are?
[17:41:15] <janrinok> ah, you mean that is how we will spend our time? Oh, no, curtains drawn and shutters closed, with just a candle to cook by
[17:42:41] <janrinok> damn, its getting dark here already
[17:43:31] <cmn32480> that happens... every day!
[17:43:56] <cmn32480> if you wait long enough, it'll come back up in the morning
[17:43:59] <janrinok> depends on where you live
[17:44:15] <cmn32480> where YOU are
[17:44:36] <cmn32480> get above the Arctic or Antarctic circle... and you would be correct.
[17:45:06] <janrinok> you don't have to go quite that far to have days that don't go perfectly dark
[17:45:31] <cmn32480> fair enough
[17:54:18] <cmn32480> yay! lunch has arrived.
[17:54:33] <janrinok> you have it delivered in? What you got?
[17:54:43] <cmn32480> same as you had for dinner last night
[17:54:51] <cmn32480> pizza
[17:55:46] <cmn32480> actually a calzone... but ais just a pizza folded in half

[17:57:35] <janrinok> want!
[17:58:11] <cmn32480> makle one
[17:58:18] <cmn32480> you do pizza dough
[17:58:31] <cmn32480> though I;m not sure if S can eat all this stuff
[17:58:46] <cmn32480> but instead of pizza next week... get a calzone or stromboli
[17:59:18] <cmn32480> you willl love it
[17:59:47] <janrinok> yep. But S can't eat gluten. You don't understand, the pizza van only does about 6 different pizzas, where we are you don't get food delivered to the door. It would have to come from 40+ miles away
[18:00:04] <cmn32480> oh\
[18:00:24] <cmn32480> guess janrinok is learning how to make a calzone/stromboli!
[18:01:49] <janrinok> I can make them, but I have to make a second gluten-free for S, and all of a sudden it doesn't seem like such a good idea. I've got a snack and drink planned for later when I watch TV for an hour or so
[18:01:53] * cmn32480 points out that the sticks are between janrinok and civilization
[18:02:26] <cmn32480> hmmmm
[18:02:28] <janrinok> it's also not part of the French culture. In the US, you expect such things
[18:02:53] * cmn32480 wonders what the delivery charges would be.... to send one over
[18:03:06] <janrinok> it would probably go cold too
[18:03:37] <cmn32480> likely... but you got an oven
[18:03:46] <cmn32480> they do have those out beyond the sticks, yes?
[18:04:40] * cmn32480 wishes he could share
[18:05:05] <janrinok> yeah, we discovered fire a couple of years ago but the only guy who knows how to make it only does it when we catch a large animal
[18:06:05] * cmn32480 sends the elephants janrinok's direction
[18:06:20] <janrinok> we'll be waiting - we love jumbo burgers
[18:06:46] <cmn32480> count your blessings.. I could have sent the Brontosaurus
[18:07:05] <janrinok> oh no, the bones from them get stuck in your teeth
[18:07:23] <janrinok> normally between the upper and lower jaw
[18:07:37] <cmn32480> I was gonna say... how many teeth do you not have???
[18:07:50] <janrinok> oh I've still got them both
[18:08:03] <cmn32480> one on top and one on bottom?
[18:08:34] <janrinok> of course, what did you expect, we are not Neanderthals you know

[18:10:08] <chromas> "one on top and one on bottom"

[18:10:54] <chromas> lefty and righty?
[18:11:07] * chromas has low humor standard
[18:11:25] <janrinok> well, how else would you get a Brontosaurus bone in there - you must think we are really backwards
[18:11:28] * cmn32480 is more wondering why chromas knows all the non-traditional ins and outs (pun intended) of the gay life
[18:12:27] * janrinok wasn't even going to ask
[18:12:29] <cmn32480> wooop found all the jalepenos!
[18:12:35] <cmn32480> they stuck them in the middle

[18:23:30] <cmn32480> so you cheated and learned the command?
[18:23:33] <cmn32480> uh huh
[18:27:45] <janrinok> all that talk about food, I've just had to make myself a snack and a cup of tea
[18:29:59] * cmn32480 bets the snack is mushy to aid in gumming his food
[18:32:35] <cmn32480> ~gday >beverage the Gilligan's Island theme song
[18:32:36] <exec> added to beverages

[18:39:07] <janrinok> Arthur does it ok

[18:39:46] <cmn32480> crutchy and I (mostly crutchy) haven't gotten that far.

[18:52:26] <janrinok> so it's basically a linux shell?
[18:52:38] <janrinok> ah, systemd as well
