[18:55:42] <weeds> sorry to barge in.... Is there a way to make a neat columnar posting?
[19:00:57] <Deucalion> hmm... don't quote me on it but as html is fine could you use

etc. ? Never tried it myself :? Make sure to hit Preview to avoid ridicule :D Worth asking this question over in #editorial they work with this stuff evry day :)
[19:03:11] <Deucalion> hmm... just seems to put it all on one line when I try it :/
[19:03:47] <AndyTheAbsurd> Yeah, I think rehash inherited stripping out all but a few HTML tags from slashcode.
[19:04:20] <weeds> thanks - I tried some of the tags listed on the page, but no go. Went with leader dots :)
[19:04:29] <AndyTheAbsurd> I guess you could try using <br /> to end lines and <dd /> to indent them, but it won't look good.
[19:05:27] <Deucalion> lemm take a looksee - I'm sure there are older stories with tables in them, let me inspect what was in the actual sub to make that work
[19:06:05] <weeds> I'm sure the comment will get eonough ridicule, no need to add any not previewing!
[19:06:20] <weeds> OK, I can wait a few, thanks.
[19:11:18] <janrinok> weeds, if you can't do it, try your best and submit it anyway with instructions on how you would want it to look. The eds can access more html tags than can submitters
[19:11:23] <Deucalion> That's good as I am miserably failing to find a story with a table in it :)
[19:11:32] <weeds> The submit page has "<b|i|p|br|a|ol|ul|li|dl|dt|dd|em|strong|tt|blockquote|div|ecode|quote|sarc|sarcasm|user> " but I could not get dl, dt and dd to work.
[19:11:48] <janrinok> sry, Deucalion, that should have been directed to you
[19:12:23] <janrinok> no they are stripped out to prevent various nefarious techniques at getting stuff into the site
[19:12:37] <weeds> It's just a simple list in a response, not a story submission. Thanks for checking.
[19:12:41] <janrinok> but gtg - bye
[19:12:42] <Deucalion> janrinok, what should? I'm glad you stepped in - I have no clue how to make a table happen in a sub but I know I have seen them in stories beofre :)
[19:12:45] <Deucalion> thanks jr
[19:13:22] <Deucalion> I'm just the janitor and vaguely know a little irc-fu :)

[19:49:39] <Bytram> weeds: to answer your question, to my knowledge there is no *easy* way to provide tabular data in a story *submission*...
[19:50:49] <Bytram> there are some additional tags that, once an editor has received a submission, they are privy to adding to it. On one recent occasion, a story was submitted with <pre> (I think) tags to present tabular info.
[19:50:58] <Bytram> I went nuts with the UI trying to get that to align.
[19:51:10] <Bytram> finally gave up and converted it to a proper <table>
[19:51:51] <Bytram> just do the best you can, and add a note to the top "EDITORS: Please fix up the table below." or somesuch and we can take the hint!

[20:56:28] <Deucalion> As long a editors can insert the table codes then in the sub it would seem suffice to put ~table~~th~blah~/th~th~blah2~/th2~ i.e. replace the html < > with ~ then surely an ed could just mass replace them :D as long as <> are not in any text of course!
[20:56:37] <Deucalion> I mean ~ not being in any text
[20:57:07] <Deucalion> wow my brain is tired.
[20:57:32] <Deucalion> Going to wander in the snowy Canadian outback for a while.
[20:59:34] <Bytram> that would work... or use:
[21:00:19] <Bytram>

thisthat

[21:00:52] <Bytram> basically, we can work with it... worst comes to worst, we copy it, paste into an editor, global replace, and paste it back in.
[21:04:39] <Bytram> time to get going.
[21:04:43] <Bytram> have a good day, all!
