[08:15:55] <FunkyLich> Hello all. I came across this article a bit earlier today.
[08:15:57] <FunkyLich> http://www.networkworld.com
[08:16:00] <PC-Police> ^ 03Virtualizing WAN capabilities | Network World
[08:17:00] <FunkyLich> I was wondering how much of all that makes sense. It seems to put a lot of focus on the virtual buzz that exists today everywhere and it seems to be being pushed in networking as well.
[08:17:49] <crutchy> if you can virtualize pc hardware, then virtual networks would seem possible too i guess
[08:19:10] <FunkyLich> While I don't mind this being implemented by those who want to, I am a bit of a fanboi of the saying "Hardware is King". All this "IT as a service" doesn't seem to have much sense unless one defines what IT is. It may range from just a shared printer, to an entire rack full of servers and switches.
[08:20:13] <crutchy> hardware is probably still king, but virtual hardware is much cheaper and can make larger scale testing a bit more feasible maybe
[08:20:58] <crutchy> possibly also lends itself to end-to-end encryption
[08:21:12] <crutchy> including the packet layer
[08:21:31] <crutchy> possibly. who knows
[08:21:56] <FunkyLich> crutchy: True that, yet I don't see this very relevant when it comes to virtualising WAN. This part of the article:
[08:22:02] <crutchy> but yeah its gotta all run on actual hardware at the end of the day :p
[08:22:02] <FunkyLich> In a world where every part of business is moving, ever faster, the new WAN era will be characterized by user-intuitive solutions that help businesses sense and adapt to shifting demands, allowing those businesses to achieve competitive advantage by helping them optimize their business in motion.
[08:22:22] <crutchy> sounds like marketing fluff
[08:23:01] * chromas runs a whole virtual data center from a laptop. Pay me moneys for my services
[08:23:07] <crutchy> it will probably better serve the underground more
[08:23:16] <FunkyLich> This part of the article, just is hard to swallow. WAN in a user intuitive solution? What, a ceo's grandma to deploy these things through next-next-next ?
[08:23:18] <crutchy> like running a wan over tor or something
[08:23:39] <crutchy> then the feds will have even more trouble tracking down crooks
[08:24:06] <crutchy> we can ssh over tor over vpn :D
[08:25:00] <crutchy> "i am a level 8 deep encryption mage!"
[08:25:48] <FunkyLich> Indeed. Over a virtual cisco serial line to the other side of the continent. Why, it's just as easy as drawing a line in a map and hitting a small "run" button.
[08:26:46] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Firefox 53 Will Stop Supporting Windows XP and Vista - http://sylnt.us - palemoon?
[08:26:48] <FunkyLich> The wan routers are 8th level depth virtualised, not to forget.
[08:28:02] <crutchy> the problem for law enforcement is that virtualized hardware can be easily spun up to make potentially massive networks with hardware that can be physically located anywhere
[08:28:33] <crutchy> then you encrypt the traffic between those vms and host smaller similarly encrypted networks inside those
[08:29:12] <crutchy> fiik if that would work, or how. but that's the kinda shit that fuels the internet
[08:29:41] <FunkyLich> My horror in this is that this kind of buzz for virtualization is way beyond the vm. The entire concept of a "network" is being pushed towards this area.
[08:30:00] <crutchy> seems inevitable
[08:30:52] <crutchy> its not really that hard to set up a network of a few vms inside a vm
[08:30:57] <FunkyLich> I can't imagine two carriers interconnecting via a virtual physical connection in the sense of how also a virtual machine is seen.
[08:31:58] <FunkyLich> It's what, a virtual fiber cable? And a virtual router at each end? Runnning bgp and all the rest of the tricky galore in them?
[08:32:39] <crutchy> in the case of a lan inside a vm its just internal traffic, but breaking out of the physical machine would be interesting
[08:32:40] <FunkyLich> As if oddities don't creep often enough as it is, now there's this entire bundle of layers in the middle which need to be accounted for?
[08:33:07] <crutchy> i imagine it would be something like a tunnel
[08:33:11] <crutchy> but yeah i dunno
[08:33:48] <crutchy> you could bundle a whole bunch of "virtual" network connections inside another connection
[08:34:04] <crutchy> kinda like usb multiplexing maybe
[08:34:31] <crutchy> with the parent bundle handling the routing of its contained connections
[08:34:39] <crutchy> s/bundle/connection/
[08:34:39] <sedctl> <crutchy> with the parent connection handling the routing of its contained connections
[08:34:45] <FunkyLich> Tunnels and vlans I can undertand. But they already are there, why call them another name? I so much fear that the vision is to see the network as a whole, the physical thing, through a layer of abstraction which doesn't really reflect the physical.
[08:35:23] <crutchy> virtualizing probably offers something like recursive tunneling
[08:35:28] <crutchy> you can go as deep as you like
[08:36:05] <FunkyLich> And then there will be requested efficiency and hi speed from those things.
[08:36:07] <chromas> Cybercloud networking
[08:36:17] <chromas> Put your hardware in the cloud
[08:36:26] <crutchy> think of how hard it is to decrypt a single ssh tunnel. imagine doing that and then being presented with traffic from a bundle of virtualized ssh tunnels
[08:36:50] <crutchy> and then in each virtualized ssh tunnel there is another bundle of virtualized ssh tunnels
[08:37:05] <chromas> Sounds like you'd need extra hardware to handle the encryption
[08:37:09] <chromas> or is that virtual too?
[08:37:11] <crutchy> probably yeah
[08:37:15] <crutchy> lol
[08:37:19] <FunkyLich> chromas: Indeed. All this seems to me like a Zaphod Beeblebrox idea (shovel on face)
[08:37:42] <crutchy> its more likely to be used by datacenters
[08:37:50] <crutchy> with lotsa grunt
[08:38:03] <FunkyLich> So true hardware ?
[08:38:05] <crutchy> and multi-gb connections
[08:38:22] <crutchy> yeah you need big actual hardware to share between all the virtualized resources
[08:38:25] <crutchy> on multiple levels
[08:38:56] <crutchy> we should set up a 10 level deep tunnel for soylent irc :p
[08:39:11] <crutchy> the first tunnel is through my butthole
[08:39:22] <chromas> Move the network into the virtual wan and then throw the hardware away
[08:39:24] <FunkyLich> And I guess maintaining the technical internal consistency of such a datacenter is a walk in the park :D
[08:39:49] <FunkyLich> Just next-next-next and virtual plug-and-play. Problem solved.
[08:40:05] <crutchy> FunkyLich, the catch would be if a physical machine borked it could take out a crapload of virtual infrastructure
[08:40:23] <crutchy> depending on how much grunt the machine had
[08:40:39] <chromas> Implement RAID for servers
[08:40:46] <crutchy> ooh. we could host virtual internets on thinking machine supercomputers
[08:40:50] <chromas> They work in triplicate
[08:40:57] <crutchy> and have dinosaurs running through the tubes
[08:41:29] <crutchy> "it's a virtual unix system.. iknow this"
[08:41:33] * FunkyLich imagines a finance bursa thing running on top of such a thing.
[08:41:46] <chromas> Datasaurus Vex
[08:41:50] <crutchy> lol
[08:41:54] <FunkyLich> lol
[08:43:51] <FunkyLich> I have seen teams strugling with openstack for things that one can solve with current hypervisor tech (xen, vmware come to mind)
[08:44:09] <crutchy> i just use virtualbox headless at work
[08:44:23] <crutchy> simple enough with little shell scripts
[08:44:56] <crutchy> i don't host vms inside my vms though :p
[08:45:36] <FunkyLich> Well I was also giving space for the life of a small datacenter, 3-4 racks of servers which can be managed centrally from some designated node.
[08:45:55] <FunkyLich> Bur yes, virtualbox is like the bread and butter for me as well.
[08:47:06] <FunkyLich> Now.. add there also the concept that to connect those things, instead of their cables and interfaces, you have to use a 'virtual network'. And the traffic which would otherwise pass along physical interfaces, nope! They're virtual.
[08:47:55] <FunkyLich> Which in the end, will always connect the things that reside in these 3-4 racks, but your interfaces that the virtual machines see, are virtual too.
[08:48:20] <crutchy> i used bridged mode at work
[08:48:29] <crutchy> but yeah there's different ways of doing it
[08:48:38] <FunkyLich> And it's so simple! You can disconnect a virt-cable from a virt-switch and virt-stick it elsewhere! Isn't that so dandy?
[08:48:54] <crutchy> soon we'll need a virtual NOC
[08:49:09] * FunkyLich sigs.
[08:49:13] <crutchy> The Sims... NOC Edition
[08:49:34] <FunkyLich> I think exactly that's what my ceo's vision is. The virtual noc.
[08:49:54] <crutchy> cos virtual workers don't demand as much pay
[08:49:56] <FunkyLich> So he as well, can make it work just like a visio diagram.
[08:50:11] <crutchy> they're gunna take our jerbs!
[08:51:28] <FunkyLich> We could exchange dem jerbs for their hiclass hookas!
[08:52:22] <crutchy> virtual bewbs in the virtual strip clubs after working at the virtual NOC
[08:52:30] <crutchy> man i need a virtual drink
[08:52:56] <crutchy> virtualctl pour drink
[08:54:05] <FunkyLich> You're leaking through the virtual pthread vlib.
[08:54:24] <FunkyLich> The power of virtual shared virtual memory.
[08:56:06] <FunkyLich> Would that article be worthy of appearing on the SN site itself?
[08:58:25] <FunkyLich> I now saw the author is "Sr. Marketing Manager of AT&T"
[08:58:34] <FunkyLich> I see clearly now.
[09:03:50] <chromas> Also "Sponsored"
[09:04:12] <crutchy> FunkyLich, maybe submit it anyway. might lead to some interesting comments
[09:04:19] <chromas> Maybe we can get some of that sweet marketing moola
