[00:41:56] <paulej72> yes i think they are related

[01:01:55] <paulej72> Identified - We are currently experiencing connectivity issues within our Dallas data center as the result of a large-scale DDoS attack. Our team is working to mitigate the ongoing attack and restore connectivity as soon as possible. We will be posting additional updates going forward.
[01:01:55] <paulej72> Sep 25, 00:40 UTC
[01:02:34] <paulej72> Oh shit it's the 400TB DDOS we have benn expecting
[01:03:14] <paulej72> And if you didn't know Dallas is where our servers are.
[01:03:21] <Bytram> quick, everybody get their TB shot!
[01:04:22] <Bytram> for those who want to see/follow the Linode status themselves: https://linode.statuspage.io
[01:05:20] <Bytram> I wonder if they have (or could make available) an RSS feed so we could follow it in #rss-bot
[01:05:31] <paulej72> OK both front ends are up and seem to be working
[01:05:38] <Bytram> paulej72++
[01:05:38] <Bender> karma - paulej72: 225
[01:05:56] <paulej72> Dev is up and running as well
[01:06:03] <Bytram> paulej72++

[01:07:23] <paulej72> When we lost the network we lost the connection between the management servers and the ndb cluster nodes (although they run on the same machine). without the network it would time out rather quickly
[01:07:50] <Bytram> was wondering what was going on at first. Had just gotten on-line, was checking the story queue, and it looked "weird" -- there was no admin line at the top, and no separators for different days; just a wall of green (approved/2nded) stories.
[01:07:56] <paulej72> well one thing I was able to fix by being one line at the right time
[01:08:47] <Bytram> besides the obvious symptoms of the site misbehaving, should you have not been here... any suggestions on what I could have done to diagnose/restart things?
[01:09:21] <Bytram> or is that beyond a simple "check this and then do that" kind of thing?
[01:10:16] <paulej72> well at first I saw that there were net splits here and when I sshed into our servers it was not connecting at first.
[01:10:30] <paulej72> So I knew someone pulled the plug on the internet.
[01:11:27] <Bytram> hmmm, okay. that makes sense.
[01:11:27] * Bytram suggests we play it safe and make a couple backups of the internet
[01:11:28] <Bytram> =)
[01:11:32] <paulej72> The diagnosis was a bit more involved. Once logged in I check ran ndb_mgm and checked what was on and what was off.
[01:11:50] <paulej72> both ndb nodes were offline and needed restarting.
[01:12:11] <Bytram> could I have checked that with PS -EF ????
[01:12:17] <paulej72> neon was easy to restart as I have my new startup scripts running on that server.
[01:12:26] <paulej72> I need to install them on helium
[01:12:28] <Bytram> or similar.... is late and my brain is not all hear atm
[01:12:47] <Bytram> nice to get to check them out and verify they worked fine IRL
[01:12:53] <Bytram> paulej72++ automation
[01:12:53] <Bender> karma - paulej72: 227
[01:14:05] <paulej72> yeah you could use ps to find if ndb is on neon and helium, but ndb_mgm will show the status of the mgm servers, the ndb nodes and the mysql frontends from one place
[01:15:32] <Bytram> nice. have not used it before and am wary of playing with tools which may have, umm, side-effects if I use them wrong... ps is rather safe
[01:15:58] <Bytram> need to break off and make some dinner; thanks again for getting things running again!!!
[01:16:15] <Bytram> afk biab

[17:58:58] <SirFinkus> I was in a room with 2 doors
[17:59:09] <SirFinkus> one door on one wall, another on the other wall
[17:59:23] <SirFinkus> I was in the corner and trying to leave, but the doors open and people started pissing through them
[17:59:47] <SirFinkus> then I went "wait a second, I must be dreaming"
[17:59:50] <SirFinkus> and I "woke up"

[18:56:03] <Ethanol-fueled> May even have to go to the bar to watch the game...though bars and Sundays are a bad combination.

[18:57:01] <SirFinkus> you missed my piss inception dream story
[18:57:20] <SirFinkus> I think I may be into watersports now
[18:58:41] <Ethanol-fueled> I read it in the logs a few minutes ago
[18:59:00] <Ethanol-fueled> To each his or her own....but how would you get past the scent of ammonia?

[18:59:24] <SirFinkus> it might be the best part of it
[18:59:31] <SirFinkus> it's unexplored territory
[18:59:40] <Ethanol-fueled> Yeech
[18:59:48] <SirFinkus> I'll probably start by getting them to drink a lot of green tea or something
[18:59:57] <SirFinkus> and work my way up to asparagus
[19:00:15] <Ethanol-fueled> Maybe if that was bad you could have them drink pineapple juice instead
