[01:17:42] <BadCoderFinger> Hi guys
[01:20:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> evenin
[01:20:23] <BadCoderFinger> Hey TMB, how are you?
[01:21:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> pretty fair. pondering some death pon the high seas since i found me a free to play naval warfare game.
[01:21:26] <BadCoderFinger> That's cool.
[01:22:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> other than that, pretty slow. gonna start on a new minecraft mod tomorrow since i'm done coding SN until after the release.
[01:23:37] <BadCoderFinger> That sounds kinda nifty.
[01:23:55] <BadCoderFinger> Are you mostly a perl guy, or what other languages do you like?
[01:24:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> well it's java coding so it hurts me but i gotta learn it to teach it to a kid.
[01:24:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> well if i gotta be extremely efficient, C. otherwise perl.
[01:25:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> anything that enforces strong typing can suck a dick as far as i'm concerned.
[01:25:49] <BadCoderFinger> Yeah, my day job is C++. Strong(ish) typing bites.
[01:26:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> it brings out the "you're not the boss of me" in me
[01:26:49] <TheMightyBuzzard> python can eat it because it takes 2x as many lines as perl and they have to be formatted properly
[01:26:50] <BadCoderFinger> And my pet peeve is templates. I can rant for days about them.
[01:27:25] <BadCoderFinger> Only twice as many lines? Anything less trivial than a "Hello world" takes 20k at least.
[01:27:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> i like languages that let me shoot myself in the foot so thoroughly that i never have to wear long pants again.
[01:27:57] <BadCoderFinger> I'll take "flexible and dangerous" over "safe but hamstrung" any day.
[01:28:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> knod knod
[01:29:04] <TheMightyBuzzard> hrm... only you and me talking... let's do something about that

[01:29:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> that should do it
[01:30:01] <BadCoderFinger> Heh
[01:30:45] <BadCoderFinger> I've gotten a lot of mileage out of ruby. But it's very slow. Anything over 500 lines gets converted to C.
[01:31:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> been meaning to try ruby but every time i get ready to actually do it i get distracted
[01:32:10] <BadCoderFinger> Look up "Ruby Koans"
[01:32:16] <BadCoderFinger> Good way to get into it.
[01:32:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> hrm
[01:32:46] <BadCoderFinger> It's a tutorial that you keep running and getting to work.
[01:32:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> well don't have time at the moment. lot of stuff going on in actual life on top of coding this mod for the roomie's kid
[01:34:09] <BadCoderFinger> If you get time, it's worth a look.
[01:35:46] <BadCoderFinger> It has support for co-routines, which I've never been a huge fan of. But they're there.
[01:37:30] -!- julian has quit [Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
[01:37:35] * TheMightyBuzzard scratches his head
[01:38:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> don't EVERY function suspend its execution until a function called from within it returns?
[01:38:18] <BadCoderFinger> It's a craptacular way of pretending to be multi-threaded. So the answer is, sort of.
[01:38:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> weird
[01:39:35] <BadCoderFinger> Real threading would require significant work in the bowels of the runtime. Co-routines mean that "threads" should be safe from side-effects without too much work.
[01:40:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> meh, doesn't look like coroutines do anything that normal functions don't do
[01:41:43] <BadCoderFinger> That's the point. Pretending to be multithreaded.
[01:43:43] -!- julian [julian!~Julian@56-08-620-95.dhcp.snlo.ca.charter.com] has joined #Soylent
[01:43:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> threads ain't hard in the first place. if you can deal with the infinite possibilities of web coding you should be able to handle threads.
[01:44:15] <BadCoderFinger> There are some fun issues that come up with threads. A lot of people get them wrong.
[01:44:17] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean they only get out of order in highly predictable places
[01:46:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> shurg, anyways...
[01:46:10] <BadCoderFinger> I love pthreads, because I've spent so much time there, but OpenMP fixes a lot of silliness.
[01:46:44] <BadCoderFinger> Even microsoft's rotten excuse for a compiler supports OpenMP.
[01:46:54] <BadCoderFinger> Probably poorly, but still.
[01:48:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> i really don't bother writing threaded things lately. most of the stuff i write is either a quick script or rehash.
[01:50:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> really need to get boned up on it though i suppose. it's not like processors have gotten any faster otherwise in the past ten years.
[01:51:51] <BadCoderFinger> Yeah, no kidding.
[01:52:06] <BadCoderFinger> With AMD flailing again, Intel doesn't bother.
[01:52:32] <BadCoderFinger> So we've gotten more cores, rather than any real advances.
[01:52:36] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[01:52:56] <BadCoderFinger> Hey Bytram!
[01:53:16] <Bytram> BadCoderFinger: Bonjour Senor!
[01:56:53] <BadCoderFinger> How are things?
[01:58:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> evenin, Bytram
[01:58:28] <Bytram> okay. I made a big mistake at work, but the policies and procedures caught it, I owned up to my mistake, and we were able to get things straightened out successfully.
[01:58:32] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: hola!
[01:58:37] <Bytram> how's fishing?
[01:59:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> dead for the winter until it gets pleasant enough that i want to crawl under my car to get the hitch put on
[01:59:31] <Bytram> What? No ice fishing for you?
[01:59:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> no ice
[01:59:46] <Bytram> that would make it problematic
[01:59:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> have to get out in the middle of the lake the old fashioned way, with a boat

[19:07:37] <cmn32480> trying to pour coffee in while taking a drag must be difficult
[19:07:40] <Runaway1956> Nahhhhh, gotta be coordinated
[19:07:51] <cmn32480> and soggy smaokes taste nasty
[19:08:06] <Runaway1956> I knew a woman who . . . well . . . let's just say she was talented
[19:08:25] <cmn32480> HHHHIIIYYOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
[19:08:41] <Runaway1956> And, it's amazing what ice does to the male anatomy when it's not expected . . .
[19:10:17] <cmn32480> there was shrinkage
[19:10:21] <cmn32480> I was in the pool!
[19:11:12] <Runaway1956> Actually - under some circumstance - there is no shrinkage. You gotta experience it sometime. Want her phone number? She IS over sixty now though.
[19:11:27] <cmn32480> somethign wrong with mature women?
[19:11:41] <Runaway1956> Nothing at all, but some younger guys don't know that yet.
[19:12:12] <cmn32480> long as she doenst' look like this: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com
[19:29:24] <mrcoolbp> Well the card (freakin' barely) does fit, I mean technically. Had to move my hard drive and remove some USB/Cardreader/headphone/microphone snake that runs to the front of the box to get it in there but it does fit....
[19:30:31] <Runaway1956> Ahhhh, but do you still have good airflow? You might make it fit, but then you have a compartmentalized cabinet, with the two parts "insulated" from each other
[19:30:47] * Bytram hopes that mrcoolbp keeps his eyes peeled for the escape of the magic smoke
[19:31:20] <Runaway1956> He just needs a higher viscosity smoke - the low vicosity stuff leaks easily
[19:31:31] <Bytram> good point!
[19:31:56] <Runaway1956> But, I don't recommend synthetic smoke - stay with the natural stuff.
[19:32:27] <Bytram> keeping things authentic, I see.
[19:32:41] <mrcoolbp> Runaway1956: there's a bit of clearence on each side
[19:32:51] <Runaway1956> Good deal then
[19:33:01] <mrcoolbp> I would need to sacrifice the front ports and buy a new PSU but I'd be in business
[19:33:09] <Runaway1956> I have been "burned" by small cases in the past.
[19:33:13] <mrcoolbp> that freakin' core case looks sick though
[19:33:46] <Runaway1956> Once you've driven an eATX, you'll never want to go back to a standard tower
[19:34:17] <Runaway1956> People walk in the house, and ask, "What is THAT?!"
[19:34:33] <Runaway1956> And, you tell them that's where you rest your Big Johnson while playing games.
[19:35:21] <mrcoolbp> I think that is a bit wide for what I need = /
[19:35:27] <mrcoolbp> must do more reasearch
[19:35:35] <mrcoolbp> this will be a long project
[19:36:23] <Runaway1956> LOL
[19:37:46] <Runaway1956> My new Cree flashlights are out for delivery - can't go to bed til the mailman gets here, or he may not leave them.
[19:38:42] <Bytram> what time is it?
[19:38:54] <Runaway1956> 1:40
[19:39:06] <Bytram> AM / PM ?
[19:39:09] <Runaway1956> Mailman usually gets here about 2:00
[19:39:17] <Bytram> nod nod
[19:39:29] <Runaway1956> PM - call it 14:40
[19:39:46] <Bytram> 13:40 ?
[19:39:59] <Bytram> 12:00 + 1:30 == 13:30
[19:40:06] <Runaway1956> Uhhhhm yeah, I must be tired or something
[19:40:08] <Bytram> 12:00 + 1:40 == 13:40
[19:40:16] <Bytram> np; me too.
[19:41:01] <Runaway1956> One of my next purchases will be a camera, so I can watch the mailbox, instead of walking out in the cold rain to see if my delivery has arrived
[19:43:14] * Bytram offers Runaway1956 an umbrella

[19:54:19] <mrcoolbp> Runaway1956: just for 4 decent 18650 cells you should spend that much, no way do I trust that deal
[19:57:51] <Runaway1956> They may or may not be alright - they look good out of the package
[19:58:49] <Runaway1956> It all depends on where they come from - these same flashlights were selling for as much as $50 apiece from other dealers.
[20:04:13] <Runaway1956> It's at least twice as bright as my mini-mag Pro. Side by side, shining them on the wall, the mini-mag is just swallowed up and lost.
