[00:00:12] <Gravis> assuming you follow the scheme to give certain programs their usernames and make groups of them
[00:00:22] <Gravis> their own*
[00:01:05] <Gravis> (not an uncommon practice)
[00:06:16] <Gravis> of course this is only the effective user id and effective group id, so if someone is root, they can impersonate anything.
[00:07:28] <Gravis> but it's a good way to box your daemons so they can only do the one thing you want them to do
[00:11:23] <crutchy> hmm. i found some. apparently my xchat logs are a bit all over the place
[00:11:24] <crutchy> Sep 30 08:20:29 <crutchy> socialism turns people into slaves
[00:11:24] <crutchy> Sep 30 08:20:50 <Gravis> crutchy: it distributes burden
[00:11:37] <crutchy> Sep 30 08:32:27 <Gravis> wrong. you can eliminate the need for labor
[00:11:37] <crutchy> Sep 30 08:32:39 <crutchy> oh not this again. with robots right?
[00:11:56] <crutchy> the original robot blathering must have been before i started using this vm
[00:12:35] <crutchy> ergh. looking up gravis quotes is depressing
[00:12:48] <Gravis> crutchy: did you think that "eliminate the need for labor" was a euphemism for killing people?
[00:13:06] <crutchy> Oct 16 12:32:31 <Gravis> brainacid: i can only hope the world is clensed of your kind of stupidity.
[00:13:06] <crutchy> Oct 16 12:32:44 <Gravis> cleansed*
[00:13:21] <Runaway1956> Stupid VM's - they should be smart enough to cache something we might need someday
[00:13:26] <crutchy> lol
[00:13:41] <crutchy> it might be on my desktop or on the windows part of my laptopo
[00:13:43] <crutchy> who knows
[00:14:04] <crutchy> i frankly don't care enough
[00:14:11] <Runaway1956> Holy shit man, who keeps anything on the Windows partition?
[00:14:11] <Gravis> crutchy: yes, when people see it's possible, you form of stupidity could become a thing of the past
[00:14:14] <chromas> HI, Billy Mays here for Laptop-O!!
[00:14:30] <crutchy> argue with Gravis about governments n shit for a while and you'll get a handle of his whackology
[00:14:31] <Gravis> crutchy: you quitter
[00:15:35] <Gravis> crutchy: this coming from the person who wants to do away with the EPA
[00:15:56] <Runaway1956> Speaking of euphemisms - they're calling them "lantern sharks" now
[00:16:16] <crutchy> Gravis, if i could be bothered i'd drag out my script that scrapes logs.sylnt.us, which has everything in one place, but i don't hate you and can't be bothered doing that
[00:16:29] <crutchy> you know its there

[00:17:16] <Gravis> crutchy: you can't find what isn't there
[00:18:18] <crutchy> i already dragged out a few quotes in the few minutes that i could be bothered
[00:18:28] <Runaway1956> The movie starts in 20 minutes - who wants to stare into the abyss?
[00:18:44] <crutchy> the abyss is on?
[00:18:46] <Gravis> crutchy: neither of which had anything to do with genocide
[00:18:47] <crutchy> good movie
[00:19:41] <crutchy> Gravis, why don't you share with us your views on politics, money, labor and environment?
[00:19:54] <crutchy> summarize them for us, if you would be so kind :p
[00:19:55] <Gravis> i already have
[00:20:10] <Runaway1956> Last time I watched it, the abyss got scared and stopped gazing back . . .
[00:20:22] * TheMightyBuzzard makes it his goal to ensure Gravis's robots are coded in perl and run Windows 10
[00:20:45] * Runaway1956 notes that TMB is evil
[00:21:14] <crutchy> Gravis, you have told us before, but since you're so adamant that what you have said in the past is wrong, we need some clarification
[00:21:20] <Gravis> crutchy: just because you can't remember what i said, doesn't mean i have to say it all again. that's why we have logs.
[00:21:30] <crutchy> oh i remember
[00:21:40] <chromas> TheMightyBuzzard: perl 6!
[00:21:52] * TheMightyBuzzard chuckles
[00:21:57] <crutchy> but your saying that what you said in the past isn't what you believe, so i'm simply asking for a clarification
[00:22:05] <crutchy> or are you unwilling to clarify?
[00:22:13] <Gravis> crutchy: you may remember but you are remembering is a delusion
[00:22:22] <Gravis> but what you*
[00:22:23] <crutchy> so you're not willing to clarify?
[00:22:37] <Gravis> it's in the logs
[00:22:40] <Gravis> read the logs
[00:22:59] <crutchy> nice copout
[00:23:19] <crutchy> now who's quitting?

[01:06:25] <SpallsHurgenson> then again, maybe it didn't do all that stuff last time I turned it on (two, three years ago maybe?). It took forever to update the system software...
[01:08:21] <SpallsHurgenson> also, the roku is quieter, doesn't overheat and I have more than one TV :) :)

[17:43:02] <nick> fliptop: let me know if i can help with testing or anything
[17:43:12] <fliptop> through much experimentation i've found you need about 1 core per camera
[17:44:00] <fliptop> that's at 10fps, 1024Kb/s, 1280x800 (or so)
[17:44:26] <fliptop> any higher than that the low-end has trouble reencoding a minutes worth of footage in less than a minute
[17:44:41] <fliptop> which is critical
[17:45:10] <fliptop> nick: thanks, i'm still working on it and hope to do another round of journal tutorials
[17:46:08] <nick> that seems like a lot of power, but i can see it on a low end cpu making it unreliable when you have more than one stream
[17:46:50] <fliptop> model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G2030 @ 3.00GHz
[17:47:05] <fliptop> there's 2 cores on the low-end model
[17:47:44] <nick> recently for me it's been a battle of storage, between a standalone nvr and free software nvr, it's so much data at the highest resolutions
[17:47:47] <fliptop> it doesn't really make it unreliable, it runs consistently around 2.00 load w/ 2 cams
[17:48:11] <fliptop> but no matter the load, if it can't reencode 60 s of footage in less than 60 s it'll never keep up.
[17:48:36] <fliptop> and that's the key, in order to be able to store many months worth of footage on 1tb
[17:49:33] <fliptop> and nothing out there seems to do this well, the expensive level1 dvr stores only about 2 weeks of footage for 12 cams on a 3tb hd
[17:49:55] <fliptop> because its lossless
[17:51:44] <nick> 4TB 2 weeks for '1080p/30fps' over 16
[17:52:14] <nick> at the office i have a 10Megapixel camera, it just eats storage.
[17:52:20] <fliptop> if your dvr reencoded that you could store years worth, albeit lossy
[17:52:39] <alexbst> do you really need 24/7 footage ?
[17:52:46] <alexbst> or can it activate based on motion ?
[17:52:53] <fliptop> not really, but still, some clients want that
[17:53:17] <nick> i do 24/7 with motion on times
[17:53:30] <nick> i have done it so it records are lower res until motion
[17:54:10] <fliptop> that's a good option too, but still the raw footage can be up to 10x bigger than a reencoded ogg file
[17:54:21] <nick> but generally, record 24/7 because you dont want to miss something in a chain of events
[17:54:44] <nick> fliptop: agreed. needing all the TB in the world for a few days storage is not useful at all
[17:55:42] <fliptop> and most of my clients don't trust the cloud w/ their footage
[17:56:08] <nick> i don't know who has the bandwidth to deal with it
[17:57:00] <nick> i had a client that was interested in it, but naturally had the poorest standard of internet.
[17:57:02] <fliptop> speaking of which, have you used the mobile apps for accessing a dvr through a firewall?
[17:57:10] <nick> i have not
[17:57:15] <fliptop> well they suck too
[17:57:30] <fliptop> even the level1 app
[17:58:14] <fliptop> and you know everyone what's that, "i wanna see it while i'm not there..."
[17:58:22] <nick> mobile apps are improving, have not seen ones that say they'll get through the firewall though
[17:58:42] <nick> or do you just mean generally remote access?
[17:58:55] <fliptop> well you have to open a port up in your router, and use ddns if you don't have a static ip
[17:59:09] <nick> with ip cameras you can't really avoid it, people want the technology you're selling.
[17:59:37] <fliptop> true that. but they don't want to pay more than $99 for it
[18:00:04] <nick> ddns solves a lot of issues in my work, have cameras in some sites running over cell networks
