[02:22:15] <Bytram> maybe it is hungry? (for love?)
[02:25:42] <SpallsHurgenson> perhaps instead of chasing after it with a flamethrower, I should stand up and ask it if it just wants to talk over nice hot cup of tea.

[02:36:40] cmn32480|away is now known as cmn32480
[02:36:54] <Deucalion> English has always been many dialects... as long as there is a common ground I see no problem with diversity in local usage.
[02:36:56] <cmn32480> #smakes "the English language"
[02:37:12] <SpallsHurgenson> diversity is fine, but Australian is a step too far :)
[02:38:14] <Deucalion> Bear in mind your point of observation... who are you to judge such things?
[02:39:18] * SpallsHurgenson is the official Judge of What's Being Goodly English and Whats Is Nots, so what I say goes on this issue :)
[02:39:53] <Deucalion> In your world of one perhaps.
[02:41:20] <SpallsHurgenson> Australian "english" is a crime against humanity :)
[02:41:45] <cmn32480> the Queens English has been bastardized over the course of MANY centuries. not totally our fault.
[02:42:01] <cmn32480> given how Australia started, I'm not surprised it ended up that weay
[02:42:28] <SpallsHurgenson> nah, I'm sure it was purposeful and malignant; you know those Aussies :) :) :)
[02:44:01] <Bytram> g'night all!
[02:44:07] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[02:45:28] <SpallsHurgenson> Bytram sounded Aussie to me; put him on The List :)
[02:49:24] <Deucalion> English is a horrible mix of vocab and grammar accumulated over hundreds of years of repeated invasion from various directions. Could be worse though... could have been the French that excelled at Imperialism :D
[02:53:09] <SpallsHurgenson> which is odd, because I think we all can agree that the French speak English best :) :) :) :)
[02:54:20] <Deucalion> You managed to convince a French person to speak English while in France? Kudos right there if so :D
[02:56:11] <SpallsHurgenson> trust me, it was easier than getting an Aussie to speak English :) :) :)
[02:58:53] <Deucalion> SpallsLanguageson, what is your take on this recommended mid-range gaming PC build http://www.pcgamer.com ? I am completely in the dark trying to decide where to go with this and these review sites are notorious for pimping whatever brand is back-handing them :/
[02:58:53] <LiquidSmake> ^ 03Best gaming PC - PC Gamer
[03:00:09] <SpallsHurgenson> well, I'm not up on all the components and brands but it looks okay.
[03:01:01] <SpallsHurgenson> nvidia 970 with 4gb is nice; almost any modern i5 is more than enough for games. Might want to go for 16gb ram though; some win10 games recommend 12gb already
[03:02:37] <SpallsHurgenson> I'd personally get an i7, but that's more because I like to pretend I have more cores than I actually do rather than out of any real belief that the upgrade would significantly speed things up :)
[03:03:23] <Deucalion> I'm kinda wary about that "gaming" motherboard... seems a lot of the "gaming" comes from tweakability for overclocking using in OS tools and such. I think I'd rather have more ooomph in the hardware to start with that bother with overclocking and the heat dissipation it can cause :/
[03:03:54] <Deucalion> s/that/than/
[03:03:54] <sedctl> <Deucalion> I'm kinda wary about than "gaming" motherboard... seems a lot of the "gaming" comes from tweakability for overclocking using in OS tools and such. I think I'd rather have more ooomph in the hardware to start with that bother with overclocking and the heat dissipation it can cause :/
[03:03:58] <SpallsHurgenson> I only look at motherboards when I actually go to buy one, so I'm not familiar with that model
[03:04:30] <SpallsHurgenson> but I generally like ASUS motherboards; I tend to buy the best they have available 'cause I like having lots of useless features I'll never use (like bluetooth or built-in wifi :)
[03:07:46] <Deucalion> The ASUS mb in my current desktop has been fine and just works. But a buying decision 8+ years ago makes no sense to factor into a current one given the rapid buyouts, mergers and etc. that go on in tech land.
[03:10:33] <SpallsHurgenson> well, seeing as my current mobo is only 4 years old, you can be sure I know what I'm talking about :) :) :)
[03:11:45] <cmn32480> mine is almost 10. I'm wathcing this discussion with rapt attention
[03:12:56] <Deucalion> exactly... ~sigh~ I suspect this is one of those questions that has no right answer. We probably need Hairyfeet in here with more up to date experience.
[03:13:50] <Deucalion> Although I suspect the riposte would be - "what's your budget"?
[03:14:30] <SpallsHurgenson> although to be completely honest, last time I bought a new desktop, I didn't build it from scratch for once... I went with a boutique brand
[03:14:35] <cmn32480> In my limited experience (probably much out of date), the mobo makes far less difference than the video card and RAM
[03:14:49] <cmn32480> SpallsHurgenson got a Dell!
[03:15:20] <SpallsHurgenson> bite your tongue! I'd never go Dell! It was Alienware :) :) :) :)

[03:15:46] * MrPlow smakes SpallsHurgenson upside the head
[03:16:37] <Deucalion> cmn32480, SSD too these days.... nails the load times right down apparently. Bring on an affordable 1 or 2TB SSD please :D
[03:16:59] <cmn32480> uh huh.
[03:17:06] <SpallsHurgenson> I forget the brand (I scraped off the logo as soon as I got it). Ibuypower, falcon, cyberpower, something like that
[03:17:09] <cmn32480> i5 for the processor
[03:17:12] * Deucalion checks size of steam library....
[03:17:43] <SpallsHurgenson> honestly, while I love SSDs for boottimes, I don't see all that much advantage when it comes to games
[03:17:49] <Deucalion> hmm... smaller than I thought
[03:17:51] <cmn32480> the 16GB RAM for a scratch build is a good idea
[03:18:59] <cmn32480> and if buying a premade, make sure it'll take 16, and get 4 then buy the appropriate RAM aftermarket
[03:19:00] <SpallsHurgenson> god, remember when 16MB was the "sweetspot" for RAM?
[03:19:01] <Deucalion> SpallsHurgenson, do you keep your games on the SSD or secondary spinning rust?
[03:19:26] <SpallsHurgenson> Juggs: both
[03:19:50] <cmn32480> 16MB... at $32/MB
[03:19:57] <cmn32480> I remember those days
[03:20:07] <cmn32480> I had a 486 w/ 4MB
[03:20:20] <SpallsHurgenson> games that tend to linger get reinstalled on rust (bigger drive) but if I expect just to do a quick playthrough I dump 'em on the SSD
[03:21:17] <cmn32480> Steam allows for reinstall with no loss of progress, right?
[03:21:18] <SpallsHurgenson> but I've played games like Skyrim and Batman and Minecraft both on spinners and SSDs and there's not that significant a difference.
[03:21:32] <Deucalion> SpallsHurgenson, the 1st PC I bought came with 1MB of RAM... I maxed it out to 2MB soon after and a 500MB hard drive.... seemed like more space than could ever be needed. The world laughed at me it seems :D Makes no odds - that 500MB drive was more expensive than a 2TB drive now so it's all good.
[03:21:35] <SpallsHurgenson> cmn32480: depends if the game uses cloud saves (and if you have it enabled)
[03:22:02] <SpallsHurgenson> first proper home computer I had had 16KB
[03:23:02] <cmn32480> I don't know what my 8088 had
[03:23:25] <cmn32480> I think it was 640k including an expansion (ISA) board?
[03:23:49] <SpallsHurgenson> and technically the first electronic-computery-not-a-watch-or-calculator thing I owned didn't have /any/ built-in RAM :)
[03:24:40] <SpallsHurgenson> (or a real processor for that matter :)
[03:25:28] <SpallsHurgenson> computers without RAM or CPUs: 'cause that's how we rolled in the '70s!
[03:25:40] <cmn32480> i dind't roll in the 70's
[03:25:52] <cmn32480> I wasn't even born in the 70's
[03:26:01] <SpallsHurgenson> stop saying things that make me feel old
[03:26:11] <cmn32480> as intended
[03:26:29] <cmn32480> though if it makes you feel better, I was born in early 1980
[03:26:44] <SpallsHurgenson> that's not really helping
[03:27:08] <cmn32480> oh
[03:27:11] <cmn32480> oops
[03:27:15] <SpallsHurgenson> excuse me, I think I need to buy a sportscar to ease my midlife crisis now
[03:27:58] <SpallsHurgenson> and I'm sending you the bill
[03:28:21] <cmn32480> awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
[03:28:30] * cmn32480 hands SpallsHurgenson a tissue
[03:28:57] * Deucalion hands SpallsHurgenson a Tesla - enjoy
[03:30:43] * cmn32480 hands SpallsHurgenson a set of vacuum tubes and reel to reel tapes
[03:31:44] <Deucalion> tapes??? punch cards.... that#s where it's at for storage :D
[03:34:37] <Deucalion> I jest of course... a career in IT or tech... fail to accept change and you're signing your own departure. Not necessarily a bad thing judging by how the real term wages in the sector have been eroded over the last 25 years.
[03:34:48] <cmn32480> I think I saw a punch card once in a museum
[03:35:49] <SpallsHurgenson> I saw punchcards still in service five years ago or so
[03:36:15] <Deucalion> Where?
[03:36:22] <SpallsHurgenson> I don't know what that macine was doing and I didn't ask but old tech lingers :)
[03:37:21] <Deucalion> If it works why replace it? Sweat the asset... Business101 no?
[03:37:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> rug makers still use em for their loom things
[03:37:43] <SpallsHurgenson> some office of some industrial plant.
[03:39:12] <SpallsHurgenson> not only "it works" but often enough "that's the only guy who knows how to do whatever and he doesn't wanna learn anything new" :)
[03:39:13] <Deucalion> Well it's not like some grim reaper comes along and stops solid code from working on the arrival of an artificial expiry date.
[03:39:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> no, that's the devs of the external libs you use
[03:40:22] <SpallsHurgenson> well, in the example above... there often is a grim reaper that comes along and stops the process
[03:40:22] * TheMightyBuzzard don't love them hos, that's why he's out the door
[03:40:37] <SpallsHurgenson> "Oh no, Bob died and he was the only one who knew how the computer worked!" :)
[03:40:44] <Deucalion> Bahhh - in my day we kept it all in house... but then we did charge an awful lot
[03:41:52] <SpallsHurgenson> then you get lots of "well, this is the INPUT and this is the OUTPUT but we have no idea what happened in the middle... but you can do something about that, right?" :)
[03:42:21] <Deucalion> My word, am I allowed to say "in my day" whilst still in my 40s? That seems wrong.
[03:42:36] <cmn32480> yup
[03:42:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> Deucalion, i do regularly
[03:42:45] <cmn32480> particularly when talking to young'uns
[03:42:47] <SpallsHurgenson> just don't say it around cmn32480; he won't understand :)

[03:43:57] <TheMightyBuzzard> hey, Deucalion, can i invert the values of the mods for april 1?
[03:44:42] <Deucalion> SpallsHurgenson, I date from before the days of the MBA invasion.... software with a shelf of docs seems sane to me.
[03:45:29] <Deucalion> TheMightyBuzzard, you'll do whatever you want regardless what I have to say :P
[03:45:52] * TheMightyBuzzard ponders
[03:46:09] <cmn32480> shelves of software and doc... to good old days
[03:47:29] <Deucalion> We must be agile now... learn on the fly... don't do it right once, do it via a thousand papercuts of hot fixes.... speedier way to get to market and all that.
[03:47:36] <SpallsHurgenson> documenting code is a bad idea... because then people can compare what you WANTED to do with what you ACTUALLY DID
[03:47:58] <SpallsHurgenson> without documentation, they are left wondering if it was all intentional and there were secret hidden reasons for the mess :)
[03:48:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> excellent point
[03:49:26] <Deucalion> Invoke Illuminati reasons or something :D They made me do it that way.
[03:49:44] <SpallsHurgenson> my code is full of fnords? :)
[03:50:53] <Deucalion> I thought they were fjords :/ Quite an elegant design really.. intricate work.

[06:18:21] <Ethanol-fueled> it was too mundane to be fake. The official story why he removed it, I believe, is because the e-mail addresses from the former FBI agents were shown and they requested it be taken down. But why not simply redact the addresses?

[17:47:16] <everdred> I feel fortunate that I enjoy the taste enough to drink it black... *most of the time*
[17:47:43] <everdred> Though there are definitely exceptions, where the flavor needs to be fixed with something.
