[00:13:18] <SirFinkus> what's wrong with florida?
[00:14:57] <cmn32480|away> too many old people
[00:15:39] <SirFinkus> well, that problem should solve itself

[01:11:34] <SpallsHurgenson> oh no, wait a minute, I just found a piece in my pocket.
[01:13:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> that's good, i didn't want to share mine

[01:20:26] <SpallsHurgenson> I get the idea of a female sexbot... but why make it able to talk? :) :) :) :) :)
[01:21:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> so it can tell you when you're out of beer after you send it to get you one.
[01:22:02] <SpallsHurgenson> I thought that's what the android delivery drones were for
[01:22:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> to deliver androids?
[01:23:54] <TheMightyBuzzard> okay, ima reboot n play me some FF 13
[01:24:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> later, pantsless tater
[01:24:28] <SpallsHurgenson> I don't think an android delivery drone would make a good sexbot... with all those rotors, it would be too much like sticking your wang into a housefan
[01:26:24] <SpallsHurgenson> then again, rule 34 and all, there's probably some people into that sort of thing
[01:27:49] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Roku OS 7: Developer Highlights - http://sylnt.us - ever-more-distractions
[01:30:26] <SpallsHurgenson> are rokus really that populare amongst soylent readers? I'd have thought most were technically savvy enought to build their own hardware out of spare parts or something...
[01:31:36] <AndyTheAbsurd> I just connected a (relatively cheap) regular PC to my HDTV
[01:31:48] <SpallsHurgenson> see?
[01:31:52] <AndyTheAbsurd> I think the whole thing cost me $350 including an upgraded video card
[01:32:12] <AndyTheAbsurd> (I got it from Dell's refurbished outlet)
[01:32:27] <SpallsHurgenson> I just used an old mac mini a friend was replacing
[01:33:23] <AndyTheAbsurd> I might have tried that if I had a friend that was replacing a mac mini...but probably not because Macs infuriate me. (Yes, I *know* it's illogical. But I cannot be convinced that Macs do not suck.)
[01:33:51] <chromas> if it can run linux/bsd/haiku then we absolutely need to know about it
[01:33:52] <SpallsHurgenson> the hardware is okay... and you don't have to use OSX
[01:36:34] <SpallsHurgenson> also, I got it for free :)
[01:37:50] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm a big fan of free.

[03:44:42] <cmn32480> so far
[03:44:56] <SpallsHurgenson> no, you're wrong. the first was better :)
[03:45:08] <cmn32480> the graphics in this one are a lot better
[03:45:38] <SpallsHurgenson> download the Black Mesa mod :)
[03:45:41] <cmn32480> plot seems reasonable, but I'm not exactly sure WTF is going on or how I got where I am in this prison ciy?
[03:47:01] <SpallsHurgenson> they really don't explain much; valve took the silent protagonist thing a bit too far.
[03:47:33] <SpallsHurgenson> it gets better with the DLC, since they add NPCs to provide necessary exposition
[03:51:00] <cmn32480> DLC?
[03:51:08] <cmn32480> NPC's?
[03:51:25] <SpallsHurgenson> well, it'd be called DLC nowadays. Back then they were expansions or add-ons or whatever
[03:51:32] <cmn32480> ahhhh

[04:56:17] * Deucalion pokes SpallsHurgenson
[04:59:12] <SpallsHurgenson> eeep! stop that! I'm ticklish there!
[04:59:40] <Deucalion> my bad
[05:00:31] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - A Promising New Prototype of Battery - http://sylnt.us - they-all-go-boom-when-exposed-to-water
[05:01:57] <Deucalion> I just wanted to tickle up your wisdom on a gaming PC build... noted on one of your Steam game reviews you outed yourself as a graphics wh*** .... any recommendations on hardware?
[05:02:27] <SpallsHurgenson> well, it's not like there are many options :)
[05:03:05] <SpallsHurgenson> nividia 970 works well
[05:05:05] <SpallsHurgenson> and I've always been found of EVGA as a brand
[05:06:40] <SpallsHurgenson> mind you, it might be a bit overkill for current games unless you are running at >1080p resolutions (I myself admit to be using an older generation card)
[05:17:19] <Deucalion> Right now I am cooking an i3 laptop with integrated intel graphics - that's really not working.... too my left I have a desktop with AMD X2 6400 + NVidia GTS250.... that thing is ripe for upgradeage, It has a 500W OCZ Modular PSU... in it - I'm thinking, rip the guts out... new mobo, processor, memory, NVidia 980 Ti - dunno though - going for the top end GPU always carries a stupid premium. :( I hate upgrade time.
[05:19:02] <SpallsHurgenson> 570 works for modern games with graphics cranked down a bit; 770 works okay for most modern games at full graphics (but newer games won't run as well); 970 is best bang-for-buck right now, 980 if you like to watch money burn :)
[05:22:55] <Deucalion> I seriously do not understand NVidia's positioning - 5xx, 7xx, 9xx - some of the 5xx are better than the 9xx...... they'd do well to just reign in the marketing to entry, good, hell yeah and retina searing,
[05:23:09] <Deucalion> rein*
[05:24:50] <SpallsHurgenson> yeah, I stay away from the x20s-50s. They're mostly designed for OEMs who want to boast having the latest generation nvidia chips without the price
[05:26:46] <Deucalion> x80s being the premium priced thing, x70s being the just right offering?
[05:27:17] <SpallsHurgenson> I've always found it so. The x60s if you are really cash-strapped, but they don't have quite the same power of longevity
[05:27:26] <Deucalion> I am sooo out of date on this stuff
[05:29:45] <SpallsHurgenson> it also depends a lot on what games you play and what screen (resolution) you use. I'm happy at 1920x1080, which limits how much horsepower I need :)
[05:34:32] <Deucalion> I'm happy when my lappy does not keel over and shutdown at 1280xsomething in windowed mode due to thermal overload. The gaming box is getting a work over and then poor lappy can go back to being a comms hub and its fans can rest. Shit got al kinda discombobulated in here... games on the lappy, comms on the desktop.... I have that start from scratch feeling.
[05:35:54] <Deucalion> Inventory management got out of hand I guess.
[05:36:55] <Deucalion> Thanks for your help SpallsHurgenson - much appreciated.
[05:37:59] <SpallsHurgenson> upgrading isn't as much fun these days; I remember when a CPU upgrade was a significant advance in speed;now its all so.... so... incremental
[05:45:35] <Deucalion> Yeah - I don't seem to be CPU or memory bound, the sticky seems to be GPU..... larger textures and shaders perha[s,,, I dunno....
[05:45:41] <Deucalion> eep
[05:46:37] <Deucalion> Whatever, upgrade time is upon me... as is repurposing of my devices.
[05:47:03] <SpallsHurgenson> 99% of games don't use more than 2GB (few even that much)
[05:50:36] <SpallsHurgenson> anyway...
[05:50:41] -!- SpallsHurgenson has quit [Quit: sleepy time!]
[05:51:13] <Deucalion> Eh, maybe I'll just chuck a 970 in my Athlon X2 box then... that has 8GB of RAM...

[09:17:16] <chromas> crutchy: how's multi-screen support in xfce? does switching virtual desktops change all screens?
[09:18:28] <crutchy> it works pretty well with arandr
[09:18:51] <crutchy> each virtual desktop covers the entire screen span
[09:19:17] <crutchy> i think i end up reducing number of desktops cos it took too much room on the toolbar
[09:19:41] <crutchy> (that was with 3 screens though)
[09:20:03] <chromas> frown
[09:20:13] <chromas> well, same as kde though and I lived with it
