[00:39:07] <SpallsHurgenson> let the madness begin!
[00:39:18] <AndyTheAbsurd> TOO LATE!
[00:39:26] <SpallsHurgenson> hmmm
[00:39:41] <SpallsHurgenson> let the madness end, take a brief respite, then start anew!
[00:40:02] * crutchy passes wind
[00:40:18] * crutchy was sure to wave to wind as he passed it
[00:41:03] * SpallsHurgenson lights a match
[00:41:55] * AndyTheAbsurd turns all the burners on the gas stove to "high", runs away giggling madly
[00:42:54] * SpallsHurgenson walks away slowly - and cooly - from the resultant explosion
[00:43:59] <SpallsHurgenson> http://arstechnica.com
[00:43:59] <mrjuggsteehee> ^ 03Microsoft has no plans to tell us what’s in Windows patches | Ars Technica
[00:46:49] <SpallsHurgenson> whoever was working in MS marketing and figured out the "lets give Win10 away for free" idea deserves a massive raise, because without that I'm pretty sure it would have been another Vista for Microsoft...
[00:46:58] <SirFinkus> so they're forcing me to install updates, and won't tell me what code what's running on my computer
[00:47:07] <SirFinkus> at least they pretended to tell you before
[00:47:12] <SirFinkus> even if it was terse
[00:47:37] <SpallsHurgenson> in order to better secure your computer, we needed to install Skype :)
[00:47:41] <AndyTheAbsurd> Yeah, I'm giving it AT LEAST another couple of weeks before I install it on any of my machines. AT LEAST.
[00:47:49] <AndyTheAbsurd> probablt more like another couple of months.
[00:47:52] <AndyTheAbsurd> possibly never.
[00:48:19] <SirFinkus> I saw a video of some russian hacker allegedly decrypting the phone home stuff
[00:48:33] <SirFinkus> .pngs of the desktop were included
[00:48:34] <SpallsHurgenson> its never for me unless MS seriously changes a number of their policies, such as the huge amount of background data collection and the lack of control over updates
[00:48:58] <SirFinkus> I love how the fans spin up on my laptop if I let it sit idle for a few minutes
[00:50:11] <SpallsHurgenson> I mean, Dx12 is nice but I own 2000 computer games already so even if I went cold-turkey on new games I'd still have enough entertainment software to keep me occupied until the day I died :)
[00:50:14] <_NSAKEY> SpallsHurgenson: That's a short step from "In order to better secure your comptuer, we needed to install this Chinese backdoor."
[00:50:25] <SirFinkus> chinese backdoor?
[00:50:32] <SirFinkus> why would they contract that out to the chinese?
[00:50:38] <_NSAKEY> s/comptuer/computer
[00:50:50] <SpallsHurgenson> because there are 1 billion chinese customers and only 300 million American customers? :)
[00:51:00] <SirFinkus> and why do they need a back door? they explicitly have a front door
[00:51:04] <_NSAKEY> SirFinkus: All the therat intel weenies are rolling loaded attribution dice. Thus, it is always China.
[00:51:09] <AndyTheAbsurd> I think you mean they need to install this 中国借壳
[00:51:46] <SirFinkus> the eula explicitly allows them to gather "telemetry", which could be literally anything
[00:51:50] <_NSAKEY> http://cyberattribution.com!/Dice/c/12550174/offset=0&sort=normal
[00:51:51] <mrjuggsteehee> ^ 03Attribution Dice and CyberSquirrel1 ( http://cyberattribution.com )
[00:52:16] <SirFinkus> and they just updated the privacy policy to say they can disable software and media on your computer if they detect it's pirated
[00:52:36] <_NSAKEY> It makes me glad I ditched Windows back when people were complaining about Vista.
[00:53:00] <SirFinkus> windows 7 was decent, although I'm sure it was front-doored too
[00:53:01] <SpallsHurgenson> I put iTunes on my Dell laptop running Vista. It seemed a perfect trifecta :)
[00:53:21] <_NSAKEY> SirFinkus: Google my nick. Windows has had backdoors for years.
[00:53:30] <_NSAKEY> It goes back much further than the recent releases.
[00:53:31] <SirFinkus> yeah, I know about that
[00:53:38] <SirFinkus> but now it's a front door
[00:53:45] <SirFinkus> they at least pretended not to before
[00:53:50] <_NSAKEY> "Front door" is a bullshit term.
[00:53:59] <SirFinkus> how is it bullshit?
[00:53:59] <ciri> doing great here
[00:54:21] <_NSAKEY> SirFinkus: It's the kind of term someone comes up with when they don't want to get stuck calling it a back door, for public relations reasons.
[00:54:36] <SirFinkus> I don't mean it as a compliment
[00:54:54] <_NSAKEY> It's like, "Let's just invent this other term for this long-established technical term because we don't want the stigma associated with the original term!"
[00:55:04] <SirFinkus> I feel backdoor implies secrecy
[00:55:10] <_NSAKEY> Thus, "front door" is utter bullshit, unless used in an obvious joking manner.
[00:55:28] <SirFinkus> like, if you upload your data to dropbox, and they read it, they aren't using a backdoor
[00:55:34] <_NSAKEY> The FBI director tried "secure golden key," but that was made fun of pretty heavily and I haven't seen that one used anymore.
[00:55:38] <SirFinkus> they own the servers, so they can read whatever they want
[00:55:53] <_NSAKEY> That's just asshats abusing access.
[00:56:06] <_NSAKEY> That's not intentionally gimping a product in order to give The Man secret access to it.
[00:56:06] <SpallsHurgenson> that reminds me, I still need to figure out if my ISP can remote access my modem...
[00:56:24] <SirFinkus> NSAKEY was hidden in the code, and denied when it was discovered
[00:56:55] <SirFinkus> microsoft is explicitly saying that they own your computer and the data on it
[00:56:56] <_NSAKEY> SirFinkus: It was discovered because some dev forgot to turn debugging symbols off.
[00:57:07] <SirFinkus> nothing hidden about it, it's a feature
[00:57:19] <SirFinkus> yup
[00:57:19] <SpallsHurgenson> Microsoft didn't deny it existed; they denied (and still deny) the NSA has access to it
[00:57:25] <_NSAKEY> It's still a backdoor.
[00:57:32] <_NSAKEY> They also claimed that it wasn't a key for the NSA.
[00:57:49] <_NSAKEY> As I recall, they claimed that _NSAKEY was for other countries, which fell under the export rules of the day.
[00:58:30] <SpallsHurgenson> and IIRC it is not, by itself, a method of remote access. It is merely a cryptographic key for digital signing.
[00:58:41] <_NSAKEY> Since we're talking about this sort of thing, have you guys seen this? https://twitter.com
[00:58:42] <mrjuggsteehee> ^ 03Khalil (pilgrim) on Twitter: "Thank you @washingtonpost for posting the @TSA's master keys :)- All lockpickers#security http://t.co http://t.co"
[00:58:55] <SirFinkus> haha, I love those stories
[00:59:03] <SpallsHurgenson> (which of course has implications towards allowing remote access but it by itself does not do anything :)
[00:59:17] <SirFinkus> the classic one is the prison break where they made a copy of the warden's key for the cover of the rulebook
[00:59:23] <_NSAKEY> Just think of the implications of that link I sent for a couple of seconds.
[01:00:01] <SirFinkus> I'm sure it's already been leaked before
[01:02:15] <_NSAKEY> When you have however many people the TSA employs, and it's basically a lateral career move from fast food work, I wouldn't be shocked if some sets of master keys got stolen.
[01:02:31] <SirFinkus> not to mention the people making the luggage
[01:02:50] <SirFinkus> I bet thousands of people have access to the key, and all you need is a picture or an impression
[01:03:01] <SirFinkus> or shit, guy a suitcase and take the lock apart
[01:03:09] <SirFinkus> *buy even
[01:03:15] <_NSAKEY> It's only 7 keys, but now anyone who knows how to cut keys has a handy guide for making their own TSA set.
[01:03:31] <SpallsHurgenson> oh come on, did anyone think those TSA approved locks were in any way secure? once those became mandatory I gave up on the locks entirely
[01:03:57] <_NSAKEY> SpallsHurgenson: No. Anyone who has ever picked a few will get bored quickly, and avoid TSA locks for picking afterwards.
[01:04:12] <_NSAKEY> Master keying is the meatspace version of crypto backdooring.
[01:04:38] <SirFinkus> really, locks are pretty insecure in general, more to keep casual people out than anything
[01:05:01] <_NSAKEY> Yeah, unless you start messing with something like an American 5200.
[01:05:07] <_NSAKEY> Pin-tumbler is generally a joke though.
[01:05:46] <SirFinkus> these are kind of neat

[01:07:21] <SpallsHurgenson> the idea with suitcase locks was mostly to keep "the guys in the back" out of your belongings while it was on the plane and out of your sight... in the old days, a lock made sense because it made your belongings a slightly harder target. The luggage handlers would just move on to an unlocked case rather than worry open the lock on yours
[01:07:42] <SpallsHurgenson> but now that they have the keys to those locks, its a COMPLETELY pointless exercise
[01:07:54] <SpallsHurgenson> (more RANDOM capitalization :)
[01:08:19] <SirFinkus> on the RARE occasion I take a FLIGHT I just keep my valuable in my carry on
[01:08:33] <SirFinkus> I don't care if the luggage guys steal my clothes/dildos
[01:08:41] <SpallsHurgenson> I am honestly surprised they still allow carry-ons at all.

[01:08:48] <SirFinkus> well, I do care, but not a lot
[01:08:55] <SirFinkus> the whole carry on thing is stupid
[01:09:17] <SirFinkus> newer planes are designed to hold more luggage in the passenger compartment
[01:09:24] <SirFinkus> which is kind of stupid
[01:10:37] <SpallsHurgenson> counterproductive too. It just encourages people to have more carry-ons. Think of the security risks! :)
[01:10:46] <SpallsHurgenson> (think of the lost profit opportunities!)
[01:11:05] <SpallsHurgenson> (think of the additional weight - and fuel consumption - from all that extra luggage!)
[01:11:14] <SirFinkus> well, I think you used to be able to have a bag in the cargo area for free on most airlines
[01:12:29] <SpallsHurgenson> yeah well, you used to have seats which allowed blood to circulate through your legs on most airlines :)
[01:12:41] <SirFinkus> when it works, it's better in almost every metric to have your shit in the cargo hold
[01:12:59] <SirFinkus> when it gets lost or stolen, it's a problem
[01:13:36] <SpallsHurgenson> (jesus christ, why are cable modems so expensive? do they run on unicorn blood or something?)
[01:13:50] <SirFinkus> just pay the $80 and be done with it
[01:14:32] * SirFinkus wonders how hard it would be to roll your own
[01:14:47] <SirFinkus> I think you have to get it certified or something
[01:15:08] <SirFinkus> since all the info about how fast it is and such comes from the isp
[01:17:21] <SirFinkus> yeah, looks like the cable company can reject your modem if it's uncertified
[01:17:37] <SpallsHurgenson> /me decides to cheap out and stick with the ISP-provided modem
[01:18:01] <SirFinkus> cheap out? you're paying for that
[01:18:11] <SpallsHurgenson> no I'm not; I get it free :)
[01:18:25] <SirFinkus> are you sure? most of them rent it to you
[01:18:32] <SirFinkus> check your bill carefully
[01:18:39] <SpallsHurgenson> my building has an amazingly awesome bulk rate :)
[01:18:57] <SpallsHurgenson> $29.99 for 100/10 + free modem :)

[01:21:09] <SirFinkus> that's almost like any other 1st world country in the world
[01:21:18] <SpallsHurgenson> I know, I feel practically Korean!
[01:33:42] <SpallsHurgenson> on the downside, I may need more hard-drives :)
[01:34:15] <SirFinkus> funny how that works, no matter how much storage you have, it's never enough
[01:34:44] <SpallsHurgenson> its not that I run out of space... its how QUICKLY I run out of space :)
[01:35:06] <SpallsHurgenson> I may have to get used to to the idea that I DON'T need to download everything anymore
[01:36:02] <SpallsHurgenson> I mean, with 1.1mbps DSL, it was a good idea to archive anything I downloaded because it took forever to get... but now? I've downloaded six copies of the internet just during this conversation!

[03:00:10] <Ethanol-fueled> it does look like a place in L.A.'s skid row or San Diego's East Village where bums copulate.

[03:03:16] <Ethanol-fueled> Maybe even sledding recklessly down the hills.
[03:03:28] <SirFinkus> naw, you'd get fucked up
[03:03:32] <SirFinkus> rocks everywhere

[03:06:30] <SirFinkus> like, 10 miles out
[03:06:41] <SirFinkus> which is pretty near omak in context
[03:07:03] <SirFinkus> there's also a bunch of old structures out there, don't have pictures of those

[03:09:56] <SirFinkus> I wish I had explored more of the mines, but I was piss drunk with my cousins, and really needed a ladder
[03:10:17] <SirFinkus> there was this hole in the ground about 20' deep that led to the real part of the mine
[03:10:29] <SirFinkus> there was a ladder there, but it had probably been there 100 years
[03:10:40] <SirFinkus> didn't want to test it
[03:11:06] <SirFinkus> I shot my 1911 into the shaft and it sounded pretty fucking deep

[03:19:27] <SirFinkus> oh, not pictured

[03:19:58] <SirFinkus> picked clean by birds, but still fresh
[03:20:27] <Ethanol-fueled> Haha, well, you can find places kinda like that on the outskirts of town, but you need to watch for violent bums and junkies rather than animals or cave collapses.
[03:21:39] <SirFinkus> unlikely this far out
[03:22:37] <SirFinkus> that's further into the property

[03:48:00] <Ethanol-fueled> Watching football ain't gonna be fun because the Chargers pissed off all of San Diego :(
[03:48:02] <SpallsHurgenson> _/is_ there a downtown Charlotte?
[03:48:50] <Ethanol-fueled> What am I gonna do to let you all know I'm drinking and watching football when I don't have a favorite team?
[03:50:36] <Ethanol-fueled> For those of you not in the know, my formerly favorite handegg team the San Diego Super Chargers are threatening to leave San Diego unless they get a new stadium.
[03:51:22] <Ethanol-fueled> And in spite of massive fuckhuge profits, they want the city (and by extension, the public) to be on the hook for 1/3 of the stadium cost with no protection against raising taxes to pay for it.
[03:55:41] <Ethanol-fueled> All this while streets are fucked up and potholes are unfilled.
[03:56:03] <SirFinkus> yeah, the idea of paying for sports stadiums with public money is outrageous
[03:56:37] <Ethanol-fueled> The worst part is that the only reason for wanting a new stadium is to have more VIP sections for rich people.
[03:57:01] <SirFinkus> I'd be sort of ok with it if I got a share of ticket sales
[03:57:08] <SirFinkus> but HAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHA
[03:57:16] <Ethanol-fueled> Yup.
[03:58:21] <Ethanol-fueled> Then they came up with the policy of locally blacking out game broadcasts if not enough tickets were sold.
[03:59:24] <Ethanol-fueled> People do shit like that and then wonder why people are pirating media and watching games illegally streamed.
[04:00:19] <SirFinkus> I don't watch handegg, and I'm not interested in subsidizing people who do
[04:01:14] <Ethanol-fueled> Paying to go to a handegg game is expensive as fuck. You're easily blowing 300 bucks for two people to watch one live game here.
[04:02:35] <SirFinkus> nfl is non-profit too
[04:02:41] <Ethanol-fueled> I like the sport. It's fun to play and fun to watch. But how goddamn greedy are those fucking pigs gonna get?!
[04:03:15] <Ethanol-fueled> Right, fink. un-fucking-believable.
[04:03:19] <SirFinkus> same really with other sports
[04:03:47] <Ethanol-fueled> to a lesser extent. Tennis doesn't have the violence-appeal that handegg does.
[04:03:48] <SirFinkus> given how popular sports in general are, they'd still make gobs of money without subsidies
[04:04:08] <SirFinkus> handegg is just an excuse to have monsters hit each other as hard as they can imo
[04:04:16] <SirFinkus> granted, I don't know much about the sport
[04:04:52] <Ethanol-fueled> Yeah, and the commercials show during handegg games are caricatures of American culture straight out of Team America...except that they're serious, and apparantly a lot of Americans relate to them.
[04:05:31] <Ethanol-fueled> The Microsoft Surface ones with the Black family were almost as good as the "puts hair on your ass and 5 extra inches on your dick" Chevy truck commercials.
[04:05:36] <SirFinkus> lol

[04:06:30] <SirFinkus> Olympics ™

[04:08:29] <SirFinkus> and how many people care about the olympic sports when it isn't an olympic year?
[04:09:14] <SirFinkus> who the fuck watches track and field events

[04:26:12] <Ethanol-fueled> Well, then going for it is a pretty good option. \

[04:29:58] <SirFinkus> another light comes on before they take off for the jews
[04:30:03] <Ethanol-fueled> Plus, Arabs like to masturbate, and putting it in the context of a shower saves face when there are plenty of westerners who can resist masturbating during a 20 hour flight and remain sane.

[04:35:42] <Ethanol-fueled> Go do it and tell me how fun it is.
[04:35:51] <SirFinkus> like, fly over the rockies in a single engine plane
[04:36:39] <Ethanol-fueled> might as well learn how to fly a prop plane, then.
[04:36:47] <SirFinkus> expensive
[04:36:52] <SirFinkus> but I think I'd like it
[04:37:15] <SirFinkus> I've been on fairly small boats in fairly high seas and I loved every minute of it
[04:38:01] <Ethanol-fueled> That's a lot different, though. There's no potential for terminal velocity.
[04:38:36] <Ethanol-fueled> You can open a port or walk out on deck. You can fall into the sea and live.
[04:38:36] <SirFinkus> I trust engineering more than I should maybe
[04:39:29] <SirFinkus> for context, this was like a 40 foot ship on 10 foot seas, so it was pretty bouncy

[04:43:47] <SirFinkus> the 787 the strapped a wing down and pulled on the tip until it broke, I think they got to like 15 feet of displacement
[04:44:21] <Ethanol-fueled> Well, if you've ever had a wing-seat, you can see the wing actually flap. Pretty awesome.
[04:44:40] <SirFinkus> I prefer behind the wing, then you can see that, and below you
[04:44:45] <SirFinkus> and the flaps and stuff
[04:45:10] <Ethanol-fueled> Yeah, that's really cool. And all the airbrake shit on the engine retract during landings.
[04:45:12] <SirFinkus> in front of the wing is cool too, but you usually miss the flaps and can't get a good angle on the fants
