[00:12:19] <juggs> Must've been Saturday - been quiet in here other than EF's typical outburst.
[00:21:40] <AndyTheAbsurd> very quiet
[00:22:00] <AndyTheAbsurd> EF is always....interesting.
[00:24:49] <juggs> typically is quiet at the weekend. EF is just EF... can never really tell if he's trolling deliberately or is just an ass. ~shrug~ Never know if you're going to get some offensive troll or an insightful thought from the guy. It is what it is I guess.
[00:28:46] <nick> the trolling is often attempting to make a point, but it does require some independent thinking.
[00:29:18] <nick> other times, it is just being an ass for the sake of it apparently.
[00:29:58] <juggs> Hey nick, how's business? Busy with festival season?
[00:30:54] <nick> business is alright, festival season is mostly over for me right now, had a couple fall through over the last couple weeks
[00:31:26] <nick> i have a feeling that things are not perhaps as great as they have been in the festival industry in general, ticket sales have not been amazing this year from evidence i have seen.
[00:32:09] <nick> the other day job(s) are going ok, so thats something.
[00:32:18] <nick> hows things going for you, good sir?
[00:33:04] <juggs> not good. strikes me there are way too many festivals these days, the whole scene seems completely diluted to the point no-one cares any more - all kinda got way over commercialised.
[00:34:10] <juggs> Things for me? Best not to ask really.... shit upon shit.
[00:34:20] <nick> yeah, over the last 10 years it became a very 'trendy' thing to do. we have about 400 in our database of current festivals, all take place over 4months during spring/summer or so
[00:34:37] <nick> and that excludes all festivals in scotland, most in wales and no doubt lots that we just dont know about.
[00:34:55] <nick> juggs, i know the feeling there :(
[00:35:37] <nick> i have a feeling im not going to be paid for some of the work i did on festivals this year, again, but hey, at least its not the thousands i didnt get paid last year...
[00:38:45] <juggs> I did the Forest of Dean festival back in... uhh... must be 20 years ago I guess.. that was fun, had a nice feel to it, small, very little if any police presence, good music and people just having a relaxing time. The things now just seem overblown, oversized - just lost the whole point really for me.
[00:39:17] <nick> there are a lot of smaller festivals that still keep much of the original feel
[00:39:26] <nick> but they're not exactly thriving financially most of the time
[00:39:58] <nick> the Glastonbury/V/Download/Reading/Leeds etc are not really representative of the majority of festivals
[00:40:24] <nick> but there is still a big shift, and the commercialization has gone into overdrive on many of them
[00:40:45] <nick> 'glamping' is now at every festival pretty much
[00:43:07] <nick> the 'big 4' i mentioned are so far beyond now, the money and commercial interests involved are immense.
[00:44:38] <nick> 15,000 people seems to be the limit before they start to become a different beast
[00:45:23] <nick> but there are festivals like Beautiful Days and WOMAD that do work at that level
[00:46:12] <nick> both have changed with the popularity of festivals in the mainstream, but they still keep the right atmosphere and dont go too 'commercial'
[00:50:29] <juggs> Yeah, more recently I have found the more niche festivals have the relaxed vibe which I personally like. Few years back I found myself at a Django Reinhardt music weekend - that was laid back fun - very much about the music rather than just being at a festival for the sake of being seen to be at a festival BS.
[00:51:50] <nick> glastonbury has whole 'villages' setup for the media types that want to be seen there. people being interviewed or seen at glastonbury, when in reality they're just in one of the media production compounds on the outside of the festival perimeter
[00:52:47] <nick> if a festival is being covered by the national press, it's not worth going to
[00:53:31] <nick> especially if it's Cornbury, because the reason it will get national coverage is because David Cameron popped by to show how 'cool' he is.
[00:53:55] * juggs throws up a little
[00:54:29] <nick> there are some amazingly middle-class festivals
[00:54:50] <nick> but for the ticket prices of many now, you need to be to even consider going.
[00:56:10] <juggs> Some you need a 2nd mortgage to consider going for the whole weekend deal.... that's nuts.
[00:56:30] <nick> telegraph even did an article on it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk
[00:56:35] <exec> └─ 13Music festivals for the middle classes - Telegraph
[00:56:51] <juggs> well that's that fucked then
[00:57:03] <nick> "Even before David Cameron pitched up at Cornbury in 2008, festivals were becoming essential fixtures in the middle-class summer calendar; the hiptastic equivalent of Cowes Week, Royal Ascot and Glyndebourne. "
[00:57:20] <nick> it's sad but very true
[00:58:53] <nick> best thing to do is find festivals that dont have anyone relevant playing
[00:59:02] <nick> if they've had a radio hit in the last 10 years, stay away.
[01:05:34] <juggs> Seems better to move on and do something else instead, every time anything gets popular it ends up ruined and soulless somehow. Maybe I'm being a little cynical there....
[01:12:13] <nick> its a case of moving on to other festivals, gatherings of people for music and good times should be forever
[01:14:03] <nick> but i do appreciate the sentiment, have a similar attitude to movies

[15:22:59] <nick> anyone have experience with dd-wrt?
[15:32:11] <dx3bydt3> I installed it on a linksys wireless router before, it has a ton of configuration options.
[15:33:25] <nick> i have issues with a tp-link router on a project, it likes to just fall over every few days and requires a manual reset, it seems to be an issue with the factory firmware, dd-wrt was suggested as a solution
[15:33:38] janrinok is now known as janrinok_afk
[15:34:27] <nick> it's a remote project so i have to take a drive to flip the switch, and i dont always have access to the site, so it's becoming quite a pain in the ass
[15:37:12] <dx3bydt3> if nothing else ddwrt lets you ssh (at least it did for the linksys I used it on) so you have other potential rebooting options
[15:37:37] <nick> that sounds useful
[15:38:30] <nick> im going to buy a duplicate router i think, see how it goes before it goes live on an active project
[15:39:03] <nick> it would be handy just to have it reboot itself every 24 or 48hrs, which should be possible with dd-wrt i'd think
[15:39:35] <AndyTheAbsurd> hopefully once you install dd-wrt, it doesn't need to reboot that much.
[15:39:48] <nick> AndyTheAbsurd, i would hope so
[15:40:23] <nick> i'm hoping to cover all the bases so i dont spend my whole life going to different sites to turn things off and on again
