[00:00:30] <baryon> I say use it everywhere, then fix the system
[00:01:09] <SpallsHurgenson> I've little doubt that over the next few years we'll start hearing about how CAs - already known to sell out to governments - have also been doing the same to corporations and criminals
[00:04:11] baryon is now known as Corona
[00:04:20] <Corona> start drinking, it's Cinco de Mayo
[00:04:29] <Corona> I gave you an excuse, you can start drinking now
[00:04:56] <SpallsHurgenson> there are parts of the world where your statement is untrue :)
[00:05:12] <BadCoderFinger> Woohoo! Drinking!
[00:05:28] <BadCoderFinger> Too much Irish and Scottish in my ancestry to ignore a call to drinking.
[00:06:44] <Corona> Cinco de Mayo, Seis de Mayo, I'm sure someone died on Seis de Mayo. Bottoms up.
[00:06:46] <SpallsHurgenson> oh I didn't know you were from england </troll>
[00:09:11] <BadCoderFinger> You know, one of those guys might hit you.
[00:09:55] * SpallsHurgenson blinks innocently
[00:11:13] <BadCoderFinger> Heh!
[00:21:08] <SpallsHurgenson> what do you expect of a poor confused 'merican? we think of Wales, Ireland and Scotland to be little different from our states like Kansas or Rhode Island... just as we are all American, you are all English :)
[00:21:25] <SpallsHurgenson> (just kidding, nobody in America ever remembers Wales)
[00:24:20] <BadCoderFinger> Hey! I remember Wales.
[00:24:41] <SpallsHurgenson> no you don't. nobody remembers Wales. Even the Welsh have no idea :)
[00:25:11] <BadCoderFinger> The Welsh, yes. Keeps them safely in Wales, where everyone else wants them.
[00:25:22] <chromas> shave the Wales
[00:25:26] <CoolHand> a dude from the #gamingonlinux channel on freenode today traded me a $100 digital ocean promo code for buying him a $25 Diablo3 battle.net key.. pretty sweet deal. My droplet is now paid up for the net 20 months.. :)
[00:26:07] <Corona> what is that
[00:27:08] <CoolHand> what's what?
[00:27:35] <CoolHand> a droplet in the digital ocean? it's a vps (virtual private server)
[00:27:48] <CoolHand> and net 20months = next 20 months
[00:28:03] <Corona> gotcha
[00:28:48] <SpallsHurgenson> and "paid up" == ?? :)
[00:29:17] <CoolHand> hmm.. "paid up" == credit for the next 20 months..
[00:29:30] <SpallsHurgenson> ah, now it all becomes clear
[00:29:31] <CoolHand> $100 at $5/month
[00:29:32] <CoolHand> hehe
[00:30:36] <CoolHand> I was pretty leery of doing the deal with some dude I didn't know on the internet, but he volunteered to give me his code first to make sure it worked, so risk-free for me :)
[00:30:47] -!- mechanicjay has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[00:31:11] <SpallsHurgenson> so you came away from that trade doubly lucky; not only did you get 20 months of paid VPS, but you also don't have diablo 3 :) :)
[00:33:04] <Corona> yeah what makes that key "$25". Is that the Steam price of the game?
[00:35:12] <CoolHand> naw, wasn't a steam key.. it was a "CD key" for battle net.. I actually got a download of a scan of a "key" on a CD

[03:53:09] <SpallsHurgenson> don't worry; the family that owns walmart will still have more money than the lower 50% of the rest of the country :)

[04:04:03] <juggs> Healthcare free at the point of consumption is a good thing for a productive society. Of course it is not free, it's taxpayer funded. But it levels society. It strikes me levelling society is a good thing as it denies sociopathic rent seekers and profiteers entry to the market.
[04:06:04] <SpallsHurgenson> also, I would blame Microsoft.

[13:46:40] <Leebert> I generally use the abstract term "fuel", or "gasoline" if I'm referring to that specific substance.
[13:47:16] <Leebert> But that's because I (used to) drive a diesel, and saying: "I need to get gas" when you have a diesel truck in redneck parts of America is just short of a capital crime.

[13:54:41] <Leebert> And it's something of a redneck version of a hacker culture. They like tinkering; it's just the end goal of that tinkering is kinda silly.

[14:53:24] <janrinok> Yeah, CH and I were chatting about it the other day, reckon it's worth a try
[14:53:24] <mrcoolbp> there is a little barrier to entry right now
[14:53:36] <janrinok> and that is?
[14:53:49] <mrcoolbp> it takes a little time to learn the interface, and learn our Style
[14:54:30] <janrinok> I don't see an easy solution to that if you intend to maintain quality and consistency
[14:54:53] <mrcoolbp> I agree, I'm not talking about opening up editing for every user
[14:55:31] <mrcoolbp> but if there were 10x the amount of editors we had now, we could flip a switch that stories couldn't golive without 3 signoffs or so
[14:55:56] <mrcoolbp> plus when we get in the weeds, we tend to lower our standards inadvertantly
[14:56:12] <janrinok> but if the first 2 were not doing it to any particular set of rules then the third has to do a full job anyway?
[14:56:34] <mrcoolbp> I haven't worked out the idea yet
[14:57:34] <janrinok> I feel that it should be possible to automate much of the formatting task, replacing <br><br> with </p><p> etc, and it might be possible to actually auto-blockquote, although I haven't tried doing that yet.

[14:58:27] <mrcoolbp> I thought so
[14:58:49] -!- Tachyon [Tachyon!~Tachyon@iqb-rcj-95-061.cust.vodafone.cz] has joined #Soylent
[14:58:50] <janrinok> thx paulej72, but I don't want to burden you as I guess your plate is pretty full.
[14:59:01] <paulej72> mrcoolbp: that is probably between you and the bouncer some kind of network issue
[14:59:24] <mrcoolbp> I'm not worried about it, just thought I'd mention it
[14:59:30] <mrcoolbp> thanks
[15:01:13] <mrcoolbp> TheMightyBuzzard: is there documentation on the spam mod system?
[15:01:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> not that i'm aware of
[15:01:40] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: my fear is that what will happen is what already happens. For example, although there are more eds chipping in, CH has had the lion's share of the task over the last 7 days. Eds look at the story list, decide that someone is doing it, and then go back to their full-time job. We have to find a way of ensuring the task gets balanced.
[15:01:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> wikis scare me
[15:02:02] <mrcoolbp> oh there is a blurb on mod guidelines at the bottom
[15:02:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> ahh
[15:02:15] <paulej72> I added that in
[15:02:24] <mrcoolbp> paulej72++
[15:02:25] <Bender> karma - paulej72: 157
[15:02:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> good man, him

[15:02:42] <TheMightyBuzzard> documentation is for the birds
[15:02:53] <mrcoolbp> janrinok, I know what you mean, I'm one of the people that does that, but I'm pretty busy with stuff most of the time
[15:02:56] <mrcoolbp> = )
[15:03:49] <mrcoolbp> TheMightyBuzzard: if the "Unspam" stuff is not visible on a comment, has the spam mod been removed?

[15:04:05] <janrinok> we all are, and it wasn't a criticism. It is just human nature. Some people are better at letting the queues run to almost empty, while others like to see the queues full for at least the next 6 hours or so. The workload seems to fall on the latter because of this trait.
[15:04:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> yeppers. note the * beside the datestamp
[15:04:28] <mrcoolbp> saw that
[15:04:43] <paulej72> inactive mods are denoted with *
[15:04:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> that was a paulej72 addition. we previously actually destroyed the mods.
[15:04:54] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: people keep evaporating, we are training new editors at a replacement level unfortunately = (

[15:05:43] <mrcoolbp> is there a log of when this stuff happens?
[15:05:49] <mrcoolbp> er happened
[15:06:41] <paulej72> No we do not log when we unmod or unspam or ban currently

[15:07:56] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: we have a good bunch at present - and I'm only chipping in once or twice a day at most. I haven't solved the balanced editor load problem but I am thinging about it.
[15:08:52] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: display a percent edited by each editor over the past 2 weeks on the main page = P
[15:08:55] <paulej72> Wonder if we could get the eds to take certain days to be primary ed?
[15:08:57] <TheMightyBuzzard> janrinok, I need to borrow your timezone. mine says it's too early to drink a beer.
[15:09:20] <paulej72> its never too early to drink
[15:09:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> true: rehash warrants it at any time.
[15:09:53] <janrinok> that might work, but as we all know there are times when RL just has to come first. I didn't want any editor feel that he was being criticised for putting his job or family first
[15:10:03] <janrinok> TheMightyBuzzard: Have 2 beers on me
[15:10:46] <janrinok> the last thing I want to do is push an editor into doing too much - it hurts, as I now well know
[15:11:06] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: I don't want to burn the new guys out either, I was hoping Lamx and n1 would be returning soon
[15:11:22] <mrcoolbp> also I should check with pax and wantkitteh too
[15:11:34] <janrinok> n1 has got a big task ahead of him. He will return but I wouldn't like to guess when that might be
[15:11:43] <mrcoolbp> copy that
[15:11:51] <mrcoolbp> lamx is in a similar boat
[15:12:02] <janrinok> Lamx said he needed a minimum of 6 months before he could consider coming back at full rate
[15:12:46] <mrcoolbp> is CH feeling over-worked?
[15:13:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> okay, "off" is truly where i am about to fuck now. things that don't frustrate the hell out of me to do.
[15:13:13] <mrcoolbp> catch a fish for me buddy
[15:13:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, mowing the yard n setting up a fileserver n various other sundry stuff. sentiment's appreciated though.
[15:14:15] <mrcoolbp> = )
[15:14:15] <janrinok> no, but he was aware of the effort that he was putting in. He wasn't resentful in any way, but it was pushing him a little. It depends on his job and how busy he is. Sometimes he has the capacity, other times he has to do it when he should be doing other, more enjoyable, things.
[15:14:39] <mrcoolbp> aye, I try to monitor that channel as much as possible
[15:14:40] <janrinok> TheMightyBuzzard: and have that beer
[15:17:01] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: I think we should try expanding the current team under the existing rules, but also look at crowd-sourcing more. The best formatted stories _do_ make our job easier, but we don't want people to spend time formatting stories that we later reject for poor content.
[15:17:42] <janrinok> Anyone could check that all the links work and point to what they claim etc. Even that would be a help
[15:18:27] <mrcoolbp> a real crowd-sourced effort would probably need more tools like revision history stuff
[15:18:43] <mrcoolbp> maybe we should consider contacting the good submitters
[15:18:59] <mrcoolbp> maybe offer pheonix a position as well
[15:19:00] <janrinok> as long as we don't lose them as submitters!
[15:19:05] <mrcoolbp> yeah, I know = )
[15:20:09] <mrcoolbp> okay, well I gotta call the CPA and try to clean up the house a little, my Mom and brother are coming over later, I'll be around
[15:20:34] <janrinok> take care, I've got to go and cook a meal soon, so I will be away for an hour or two
