[00:57:13] <SirFinkus> good idea for an april fools prank:
[00:57:18] <SirFinkus> hijack scroll
[00:57:38] <SirFinkus> holy shit that's the worst http://futurenytimes.org
[00:57:39] <NetCraft> ^ 03About Us - Future NYT
[00:58:40] <SirFinkus> this is the culprit http://areaaperta.com
[00:58:41] <NetCraft> ^ 03jQuery NiceScroll plugin - scrolling for desktop, mobile and touch devices
[00:59:09] <SirFinkus> please roll this into SN ASAP so we can have custom scrollbars
[01:05:32] <SirFinkus> there is not nearly enough abuse directed at this guy's twitter account
[01:07:23] <SirFinkus> Careerscale IT @careerscale
[01:07:23] <SirFinkus> @nicescroll how do we make this scroll automatically? I see the vertical slider working with mouse etc but what If i want to scroll its own
[01:07:25] <SirFinkus> holy fuck
[01:07:32] <SirFinkus> there are people who actually think like this
[01:08:01] <SirFinkus> luckily, twitter has allowed me to curate a list of people who like this sort of thing, so they'll be first against the wall
[01:08:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> what you going on about?
[01:08:20] <SirFinkus> scroll hijacking
[01:08:50] <SirFinkus> literally worse than the holocaust
[01:09:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> sounds great, we should implement it immediately
[01:10:10] <SirFinkus> there's a jquery plugin for it
[01:10:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> smooth, just what slash needs
[01:11:11] <SirFinkus> just add some parallax and you're set
[01:11:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> really can't have too much jquery
[01:12:59] <SirFinkus> but seriously, here's what I want to do to anyone who implements scroll hijacking
[01:13:25] <SirFinkus> put the in a guillotine, then hook the blade up to a laptop with their page loaded
[01:13:37] <SirFinkus> the position of the blade cooresponds to where they are on the page
[01:13:50] <SirFinkus> then, challenge them to scroll down an arbitrary number of lines
[01:15:30] * SirFinkus likes poetic justic
[01:15:34] <SirFinkus> justice even
[01:15:46] <juggs> how does that look with a script blocker - is it one of those sites that just serves a blank page unless it gets to run its BS scripts?
[01:17:22] <SirFinkus> I gave up on the script blockers a while ago, I realized it's a fight I can't win
[01:17:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> SirFinkus, heresy!
[01:18:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> just keep a second browser around for the one in a hundred that truly has issues with script blockers
[01:18:18] <SirFinkus> yeah, I know
[01:22:44] -!- SpallsHurgenson [SpallsHurgenson!~SpallsHur@Soylent/Users/656/SpallsHurgenson] has joined #Soylent
[01:23:37] * SpallsHurgenson notices the new topic and feels he must speak out against the logging, "Won't somebody think of the poor spotted owls?" :)
[01:24:27] * chromas logs the spotted owls over the head
[01:24:46] * TheMightyBuzzard picks them up and starts cleaning them for dinner
[01:27:03] <SpallsHurgenson> but logging is also bad for the ewoks!
[01:28:19] <chromas> ~define ewok
[01:28:40] <chromas> are those the uncle tom guys or the midget teddy bears?
[01:28:43] <SpallsHurgenson> they live on endor with chewbacca, so you must acquit (or something like that :)
[01:28:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> see, this is why i like gamergaters better than antis: https://twitter.com
[01:28:47] <NetCraft> ^ 03Lord Ellie on Twitter: "FUCK IT. FUCK IT. FUCK IT. FUCK IT. #tits http://t.co"
[01:29:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> some anti douche threatened to leak that if blah blah blah so she posted it herself.
[01:31:28] <SirFinkus> the whole thing is fun to watch from a distance, but it seems like most of the people involved have extra chromosomes
[01:31:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> meh, no worse than EF
[01:32:14] <SirFinkus> the fucking manufactured outrage culture must die
[01:32:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> truth
[01:32:49] <SirFinkus> at first I thought the biggest problem in the world was concerned mothers, but then I realized that was just a subset of manufactured outrage
[01:33:48] <SirFinkus> and you can usually tell that the things they are outraged about don't usually matter very much because people concede to the outraged all the time
[01:34:39] <SirFinkus> they talk about bread and circuses keeping the populace docile, but I think it's more like bread, circuses, and outrage
[01:34:50] <SirFinkus> where outrage is directed at something trivial
[01:34:50] <ciri> out and about!! SirFinkus
[01:34:58] <SirFinkus> go fuck yourself ciri
[01:35:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> basically.
[01:36:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> gotta give em an enemy to rail against and defeat as well
[01:38:35] <SirFinkus> I wonder what it will be this election cycle, the last one seemed to be gay marriage
[01:39:56] <SirFinkus> if it's hillary, I be it'll be some feminist shit, that seems to be the current zeitgeist
[01:39:57] <TheMightyBuzzard> was it? i thought it was illegal immigrants
[01:40:07] <juggs> it's a wonder to see so much simmering anger in western nations. I don't think the frogs are going to stay in the pot, the lid is not on strongly enough :D
[01:40:07] <SirFinkus> maybe I'm thinking of the one before
[01:40:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> juggs, truth there. less than 50 years is my guess for us anyway.
[01:40:37] <SirFinkus> the proles get more upset about relatively minor social issues
[01:41:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> proles really need to just not vote. they dunno wtf they're really voting for anyway.
[01:41:56] <juggs> They'll vote UKIP here....
[01:42:36] <SirFinkus> meanwhile, we have a government that ignores the constitution, and is heading increasingly towards some kind of weird oligarchy situation
[01:42:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> they'd vote for a dead hamster with a good PR guy here.
[01:43:20] <TheMightyBuzzard> come to think of it, a dead hamster would make a better president than any since reagan
[01:43:47] * juggs steps out of a US political discussion. I know not enough. I'll be over there failing to chat up the cute barmaid >>>>
[01:43:49] <SirFinkus> reagan was kind of shitty too
[01:44:10] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - UK Experts Advise against PM's Encryption Backdoor Plans - http://sylnt.us - trust-no-one
[01:44:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> hows bout it, juggs, dead hamster for PM?
[01:44:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> reagan unfucked the carter economy. that's good enough for me to dig on him.
[01:45:15] <SirFinkus> it's kind of funny, last election I watched the green party vs libertarian debates, and they pretty much agreed on the things I cared about
[01:45:53] <juggs> TheMightyBuzzard, I'm not in a mood to be drawn into a political discussion.
[01:46:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> not even an absurd one?
[01:46:53] <SirFinkus> following politics is really frustrating because neither of the dominant parties here pass any of my litmus tests
[01:47:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> what, like not being crooked fuckwads that couldn't tell the truth if someone snuck it in on their teleprompter?
[01:47:55] <SirFinkus> generally, when voting time comes around, I look up the canidates' voting records (only thing that really counts) and use them to make my decisions
[01:48:28] <SirFinkus> campaign funders can also be instructive
[01:48:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> i pick the one who sounds like they'll fuck things up the worst. that way i either get exactly what i wanted or i'm pleasantly surprised.

[01:50:45] * Bytram is having no luck getting a story pushed to the front page. :/
[01:51:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> not a lot. see if you can break what's on dev first. it's out this weekend as is if you can't find nothin.
[01:51:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> nothin new that is

[01:52:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> both really
[01:52:15] <Bytram> well, devtest has, umm, issues.
[01:52:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> but short time on dev then everything will be devtest going forward
[01:52:27] <Bytram> can't get journals to appear on main page.
[01:52:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> huh, neat
[01:52:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> can't get any stories to appear on the main page at the moment.
[01:52:58] <Bytram> yup, that too.
[01:53:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> nc broked it. or fixed it. i forget which.
[01:53:14] <Bytram> also, I've got a comment that when I try to post gives me: "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."

[01:53:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> hrm...

[01:54:29] <Bytram> IIRC, I emailed them to you... might they still be in your mail folder?

[01:57:40] <Bytram> well, there's quite a few in the 3rd test file, and I dunno which one(s) make it croak. You can find out lots faster by loading the wholelot of 'em and seeing where it happens.
[01:57:44] <TheMightyBuzzard> they're in there somewhere. haven't got many from you.
[01:58:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya but you CAN'T see where it happens when you do that except to know that it's "somewhere in these 20k characters i just tried"
[01:59:32] <Bytram> hrrm, no logging capability? Buggers
[02:00:49] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya but not logging within a single variable

[02:15:43] <SpallsHurgenson> I also decided it may not be ABSOLUTELY essential anymore for me to own a driver CD for a video card I tossed ten years ago

[13:43:40] <paulej72> does the mod points task look at mod floor to hand out points?
[13:43:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> nope, those below the floor can still upmod
[13:44:07] <paulej72> we relly shoul not give people points if they cant spend them
[13:44:24] <paulej72> oh that right,

[13:45:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> okey doke
[13:55:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> paulej72, you'll need to change the floor from 20 to 10 when you go to insert that var as part of the upgrade. i put it to 20 just to have a number in the upgrades file.
[13:55:41] <paulej72> sure
[14:04:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh and i was supposed to poke you, see if you could get moderation to return you to the last comment you moderated by the A2/mp2 release.

[14:05:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod. said i'd bring it up in a comment, so i did.
[14:08:06] <paulej72> it all depends on how long we wait to deploy rehash

[14:24:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> what say ya about mod-banning for mod-bombs? same as for spam abuse?
[14:24:39] <paulej72> yep
[14:24:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> will note that then
[14:25:52] <paulej72> mod-bombing trolls though will be a case by case thing. Sometimes they deserve it.
[14:26:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> yep, it's going to require a sentence or two below explaining what a mod-bomb is and how to not do it.
[14:28:59] <paulej72> TheMightyBuzzard, did you cnage the spam mod removal to set the mod to inactive instead of deleting it
[14:29:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> nope, we hadn't decided how to use inactive last i checked.
[14:29:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> and some mods were getting marked inactive for obscure and arcane reasons we didn't understand.
[14:30:08] <paulej72> Think that is what we want, I did it for the mod bomb removal this way.
[14:30:22] <paulej72> That way we keep a record of the action.
[14:30:32] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh okay, i figured we were going to be doing that manually.
[14:30:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> kudos for the linky goodness.
[14:31:07] <paulej72> doing what manually?
[14:31:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> undoing mod bombs
[14:32:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> guess i should pay more attention
[14:32:51] <paulej72> it is manual, just the op for removing a downmod sets the record to inactiv, fixes the points and resets the users karma
[14:33:41] <paulej72> so we do not delete the mod log record, we just set the record to inactive.
[14:34:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod. don't think i have the time to fix that before this weekend.
[14:34:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> welcome to it though
[14:34:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> will need to change the spam mods admin page as well to use a different select.

[23:12:34] <TLA> so I was zipping through and caught the thread on editing the site, and someone had the same thought I did - of maybe using a wiki to go through submissions. Then I instantly hit a problem. It's neither realtime enough nor is there a reliable way of locking pages while someone's editing. I'm sure you've had the issue of a shared database and edit collisions?
[23:13:31] <TheMightyBuzzard> newp, eds talk on here and you can see when someone else is editing a page.

[23:18:24] <nick> or lane?
[23:18:26] <TheMightyBuzzard> nick, he was wondering how yall dealt with conflicting edits to a story.
[23:19:18] <nick> TLA, we usually discuss it in #editorial and come to some agreement
[23:20:11] <TLA> ah... dammit, I was buying Buzzard's thumb war thing there...!
[23:20:17] <nick> if there are two submissions covering the same story it's better to present both on their own, although we do sometimes completely rewrite submissions and merge multiple ones.
[23:20:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> specially crutchy's on account of they suck
[23:20:48] <nick> usually one editor will work on a submission, put it in the queue and before it goes out another will take a second look
[23:20:58] <nick> and make their own revisions if necessary
[23:21:12] <nick> then the community will complain, and we'll change it some more ;)

[23:22:26] <nick> two is the theory
[23:22:41] <TLA> sounds about right
[23:22:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> well one and a sign-off minimum.
[23:22:55] <nick> two editors, once each. but often after 'finishing' i'll see some more changes i should make.
[23:23:06] <nick> yeah
[23:23:26] <nick> it does depend on the submission
[23:23:44] <nick> an AnonTechie submission does not really need more than one
[23:24:11] <nick> but policy, and rightly so is it should be signed off by two editors before going to the main page
[23:24:58] <nick> we have pretty colours to make sure we know which havn't been signed off
