[00:07:01] <Ethanol-fueled> Just finished my web programming final.
[00:07:05] <Ethanol-fueled> It's time to drink!
[00:08:17] <SirFinkus> how'd you do?
[00:09:11] <Ethanol-fueled> I'm sure I got like a 75 on it. I think it's going to depend on the charity of whomever's grading it.
[00:10:00] <SirFinkus> well, at least it's passing
[00:10:18] <Ethanol-fueled> yeah, and it's only a fraction of my final grade, and I have a lot of points so far.
[00:10:59] <Ethanol-fueled> Most of it was PHP/SQL, and I didn't know SQL well enough to do some of the weird JOINs they were asking for
[00:11:36] <Ethanol-fueled> I got like 3-4 out of 6 SQL queries right, but in a hurry formatted my output using print_r($the_array) so it looked like shit
[00:11:38] <Ethanol-fueled> HAHAHA
[00:13:45] <paulej72> Did you get your files restored
[00:14:02] <Ethanol-fueled> Fuck no, pauley, and that's why I didn't get all my points.
[00:14:14] <paulej72> thats a bummer
[00:14:56] <paulej72> do you know what they call a med school student that finished last in his class
[00:15:19] <Ethanol-fueled> No, what?
[00:15:22] <Ethanol-fueled> A consultant?
[00:15:24] <paulej72> Doctor
[00:16:24] <Ethanol-fueled> yeah, good point. But I still have a bad attitude about it, because it made me realize how much I hate web programming. You take 3-4 of the ugliest languages and force them all to play nice with each other. I'd rather manually create database tables all day than do web programming.
[00:17:20] <Ethanol-fueled> Fortunately my next classes are theory and data structures I've already been doing.
[00:17:23] <paulej72> nah, I like bitch slapping them into submission myself
[00:17:32] <Ethanol-fueled> pauley, you must be a sadomasochist.
[00:17:41] <Ethanol-fueled> Only a sado-maso could ENJOY web programming.
[00:18:18] <paulej72> well its all a spectum not discrete
[00:18:28] <SirFinkus> I never understood why it's pushed towards beginners so much
[00:18:53] <paulej72> they can see results fast and there is no compliation step
[00:19:25] <paulej72> and a rich gui system that is fairly easy to get simple tings out of
[00:20:11] <paulej72> i tried looking at java and swing and i had like a mental breakdown
[00:20:21] <SirFinkus> eww, java
[00:20:55] <paulej72> and that was part of a web class I was taking
[00:23:35] <Ethanol-fueled> pauley, in my class we do CSS/PHP/SQL/Javascript/Jquery/AJAX
[00:24:05] <Ethanol-fueled> can you see how that can quickly become a nightmare for a noob used to compilers and warnings trying to get it all working?
[00:24:14] <paulej72> not a bad set of stuff to learn
[00:25:02] <SirFinkus> just setting up the environment can be a pita
[00:25:14] <SirFinkus> vs just a text editor and python hello.py
[00:25:44] <Ethanol-fueled> I ended up testing my shit on their hosting server through my browser rather than using an IDE because of all the shit that needs configuring to get it working locally.
[00:26:26] <Ethanol-fueled> It's also an impacted class, meaning a full-length class squeezed into half the time.
[00:26:48] <Ethanol-fueled> Be right back, gonna hike down to the licka sto' and drank my stress away.
[00:26:49] <ciri> ok Ethanol-fueled
[00:26:53] <Ethanol-fueled> fuck you ciri

[01:07:17] <Ethanol-fueled> Hee hee!
[01:07:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> for that matter i skip most of what we put out period. just look at the ones sound interesting at the time.
[01:09:57] <Ethanol-fueled> Like the ones about liberties and labor?
[01:10:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, some quality arguing to be had on those. i dig physics too though.

[01:22:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya we do, they just gotta be manually processed.
[01:22:38] <paulej72> have you not seen what happens to the staff here
[01:23:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> cept me. i'm immune. i traded mine for a candy bar back when i was a kid.

[01:41:42] <paulej72> TheMightyBuzzard: our ipn transactions are getting rejected
[01:41:58] <TheMightyBuzzard> by us or by them?
[01:43:43] <paulej72> PP shows them as rejected so there must be some issue with the new code
[01:45:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> hrm
[01:47:41] <paulej72> I wonder if adding a custom field with a json string might have caused IPN.pm to have a breakdown
[02:01:54] <paulej72> well I’ll look at that tomorrow
[02:03:44] <SpallsHurgenson> I seem to have misplaced one of my many electronic gewgaws. Life is probably not worth living without it

[02:24:36] <juggs> SpallsHurgenson, no idea
[02:25:06] <juggs> arti, I do the same - end up with a mountain of tabs open that I intend to go back too

[02:35:36] <SpallsHurgenson> thank god we have computers to help us with these difficult mathematical tasks
[02:36:38] <arti> part of the problem today

[02:38:41] <juggs> TheMightyBuzzard, new prefix required :D
[02:38:47] <SpallsHurgenson> yes, but computers are flawless when it comes to their calculations! :)
[02:39:14] <juggs> floating point on a pentium anyone?
[02:39:59] <SpallsHurgenson> the pentiums were calculating correctly; it was the world that was wrong :)
[02:40:05] <juggs> I should rephrase that - early pentium
[02:54:20] <juggs> arti, using a calc or computer shouldn't be an issue as long as the person using understands that it is a tool not a substitute for understanding the theory. Case in point - Crystal Reports - awesome tool for preparing visual representations of data sets. But damn does it get abused. People add a trend line for instance, then cycle through the trend line options (linear, moving average, polynomial etc.) until they find one that suits their agenda -
[02:54:20] <juggs> that's just using the tool badly. Sadly, in business circles it is usually easy to blag that kind of graphic through to a desired decision. :(
[02:59:55] <SpallsHurgenson> you seem to be making an important point, well worth listening to... but could you possibly present it with power point?
[03:05:34] <arti> absolutely, i'd say many aren't as proficient as they think they are.

[23:41:15] <mrcoolbp> okay
[23:41:16] <mrcoolbp> ready
[23:41:27] <mrcoolbp> (you could post it on dev to test formatting btw
[23:41:39] <prospectacle> I'm thinking we should also focus on (unintrusive, and non-bastardly) means of increasing the % of subscribers, not just the $ per subscriber.
[23:42:03] <prospectacle> for example, it's not especially obvious where/how/why to subscribe if you're a casual user (even if you have an account)
[23:42:39] <mrcoolbp> someone mentioned the idea of a banner at the top (kinda like the submission nagger) if you haven't subscribed yet
[23:42:45] <mrcoolbp> still better than an ad
[23:42:56] <prospectacle> I'm not thinking of a big banner, or a popup (heaven forfend), or any flashing reminder, but just a subtle, but overall far more noticeable set of ways to easily access the subscribe pages
[23:43:21] <mrcoolbp> I can play with the text near the funding meter
[23:43:28] <n1> mrcoolbp, i think that will make a difference, a subscription nagger
[23:43:28] <mrcoolbp> have to pester the devs to do much beyond that
[23:43:47] <prospectacle> i like terry pratchett's first rule of business: always make it easy for people to give you money.
[23:44:26] <n1> it needs to be there, ready for the time people are ready themselves
[23:44:34] <prospectacle> I'm on the main page, not logged in, and without scrolling I see no way to subscribe, or suggestion that it's even possible or worthwhile.
[23:44:48] <prospectacle> oh wait I'm lying, I see the fund-o-meter
[23:44:55] <n1> its not obvious though
[23:45:05] <n1> to me anyway, it gets lost down there
[23:45:38] <chromas> Put a 08★Subscribe link under the username
[23:45:46] <prospectacle> right, it's not obvious, also only in the context of support us. I would think maybe (off the top of my head), put "subscribe" near "create account", also a "Why subscribe?
[23:45:50] <prospectacle> " link
[23:46:06] <n1> what chromas said
[23:46:39] <mechanicjay> I especially like the idea of "Why" link.
[23:47:01] <n1> yes
[23:47:44] <prospectacle> There are two "Create account" links and two "login" links near the top of the main page, but only one "subscribe" further down, and no "why subscribe" or "why we need your money" or anything
[23:48:02] <prospectacle> chromas, you mean if you're logged in but not subscribed?
[23:48:28] <n1> idea: subscribe button next to login/logout
[23:48:38] <prospectacle> yeah
[23:49:01] <n1> underneath that, text link: why subscribe
[23:49:01] <chromas> put the start next to it to help make the connection maybe
[23:49:02] <n1> ?
[23:49:06] <chromas> star
[23:49:16] <n1> yeah
[23:49:51] <mrcoolbp> paulej72 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
[23:50:10] <prospectacle> if subscribe were on the left, among the main top-level links, and were a different colour and had a "Why subscribe" link accompanying it, then I think it would dramatically increase awareness, without being rude or annoying or intrusive
[23:51:18] <mrcoolbp> prospectacle: I increased the font-size by 20% on the "Support Us: Subscribe Here" near funding progress
[23:51:30] <mrcoolbp> I like your ideas better
[23:51:40] <prospectacle> it's kind of the same logic behind companies who are clearly and unambiguously on top of their markets (coke, mcdonalds, subway) continuing to advertise all the time, because it's not about being known, it's about being remembered. Big difference.
[23:51:44] <mrcoolbp> (but need'a pester the devs for that stuff)
[23:51:51] <prospectacle> You don't have to advertise as such to do that, but you have to remind people one way or another.
[23:51:57] <mrcoolbp> yeah
[23:52:07] <mrcoolbp> just the article today brought in 10 subscriptions
[23:52:15] <n1> thats great
[23:52:18] <prospectacle> that is great
[23:52:54] <mrcoolbp> which is cool, but don't want to do an article like once a month explaining how we need a few more dollars. Your ideas are more of a long-term solution
[23:53:37] <n1> mrcoolbp, really dont want to do that.
[23:53:52] <mrcoolbp> not at all
[23:54:05] <prospectacle> I might be karmically punched for this, but maybe there could be two posting limits: free (30 posts a week, no rollover) and paid (60 a week), or whatever. I know it's a slippery slope and a dangerous path and all that, but I mean, 30 a week is hardly oppression and most people wouldn't reach it.
[23:54:42] <prospectacle> that's a bit off topic though, just brainstorming
[23:54:46] <mrcoolbp> subscriber benefits: https://soylentnews.org
[23:54:47] <Hedonismbot> ^ 03SN article: Subscriptions Live on SoylentNews; Please Support Us 04(76 comments)
[23:55:10] <mrcoolbp> also on the FAQ, I think we could just link to the anchor on the faq
[23:55:28] <prospectacle> oh i see
[23:55:29] <prospectacle> cool
[23:56:22] <prospectacle> Can we make it so whatever subscribers post, all non-subscribers are forced by hypno-gifs to believe without question?
[23:56:49] <prospectacle> or is that in there already
[23:56:57] <paulej72> I think a text only subscription nagger could be added to the submission nagger area
[23:57:37] <mrcoolbp> pj what about the "Why Subscribe?" thing?
[23:57:37] <paulej72> Not a big fan of a banner, I don’t want to be Wikipedia
[23:57:55] <paulej72> still reading the backlog
[23:57:58] <arti> pretty cool guys :D
[23:58:15] * mrcoolbp still plans on recruiting arti and prospectacle
[23:58:40] <arti> "the red shirts"
[23:58:47] <mrcoolbp> I think I tried to get chromas and crutchy, but they were too busy saying "g'day" to eachother
[23:58:55] <arti> it's polite to g'day
[23:59:03] <mrcoolbp> oh true.
[23:59:06] <arti> g'day sir
[23:59:19] <mrcoolbp> I said good day sir!
[23:59:57] <arti> g'day :D
[23:59:57] <ciri> yeah, yeah hi HI arti
