[02:19:06] <BadCoderFinger> Hi guys
[02:19:06] <ciri> hello, whats up BadCoderFinger
[02:20:05] <BadCoderFinger> Why doesn't ciri respond with dirty messages? It could start with "I get my robe and wizard hat..."
[02:21:19] <juggs> You'd need to /join # or ## to see the real filth ciri and tama can spew out
[02:21:42] <juggs> #soylent is a bit tame being an "official" channel and all
[02:23:46] <BadCoderFinger> Heh
[02:24:25] <BadCoderFinger> I'll keep an eye out then.
[02:28:19] <juggs> hmm mpd appears to have stopped running on my lil music box :( Think it may have brainfarted because that box can temporarily no longer resolve external DNS. Not sure why mpd would want DNS though :/

[02:45:43] -!- pbnjoe [pbnjoe!~pbnjoe@Soylent/Users/313/pbnjoe] has joined #Soylent
[02:51:46] <juggs> Not that I am aware of. But that is the only material change I can think has affected the box since it was last working OK, due to network rearrangements. Oddly mpd doesn't show as a service - could have sworn it installed as a service :/ apt-cahce policy shows it is installed, but not as a service or in any of the other usual haunts for system stuff to be started from (fairly sure I installed it from repos).
[02:52:36] <juggs> blergh - this is why I should take more notes as I go :D
[02:54:03] <BadCoderFinger> Which version of Debian?
[03:03:36] <juggs> Not quite Debian, it's a (checks) Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS server. mpd installed from repo. Was working until network rearrange, box has had no external access since, so it is not an update that has nobbled it. Hmm... thinking on, it's also running a local bind9 instance that was doing dns cache for the LAN. I think the thing is having a strop because I pulled its network legs from under it :D I have headphones and music on the laptop while I poke it bac
[03:03:36] <juggs> k into alignment with the new reality where it's not the centre of everything :D
[03:06:18] <BadCoderFinger> Heh, well here's hoping that works.

[03:19:05] <juggs> Eh, I had it set up for running a 3G USB connection, MASQ'ing the lan out over that and a few other things besides. I think I may just make sure I have all my stuff elsewhere and nuke it from orbit and start again. If I sling another nic in it, it could serve well as a firewall device in the new order.
[03:19:29] <LancePodstrong> what kind of device?

[03:33:02] <juggs> Intel Atom D425KT board with 2G RAM and 500G HDD. No use for virtualised stuff as it does not have the processor extensions for that. I see it can be used as a firewall device with the addition of a PCI NIC or as a generic media device with some more storage.
[03:34:28] <juggs> You may guess it's done a few years service already :)

[03:39:07] <LancePodstrong> oh nice
[03:39:15] <LancePodstrong> i have a D525MW
[03:39:22] <LancePodstrong> it's the greatest thing since sliced bread
[03:39:40] <juggs> That has VT extensions right?
[03:39:46] <LancePodstrong> i have no idea
[03:39:58] <LancePodstrong> dual core 1.8ghz w/ hperthreading
[03:40:44] <LancePodstrong> i'm using it to do http/smtp/imap
[03:41:10] <LancePodstrong> and light duty forwarding ports
[03:41:19] <LancePodstrong> but not main firewall
[03:41:52] <LancePodstrong> also the nfs host for the lan
[03:42:23] <LancePodstrong> it's way overpowered
[03:42:35] <LancePodstrong> but fuckit, the whoel thing draws about 18w sitting idle all day
[03:46:13] <BadCoderFinger> That's pretty cool, actually. I have an old EEE 901 in that role, myself.
[03:48:34] <juggs> I just wanted something small and fanless - originally to act as a media store on the lan. But so far, it has been that, it has also run as backup server (sftp/ssh), mail and web server, run various VMs for stuff I am toying with (vboxheadless) which while they didn't run fast they ran OK... I guess. Only downside was the cheap case chose to put it in. Good board.
[03:50:39] <LancePodstrong> you can get 8 core w/ hyperthreading atom boards with virt support for like $350 nowadays
[03:50:46] <LancePodstrong> i looked at newegg a while back and drooled
[03:50:51] <LancePodstrong> power consumption like 20-25w idle
[03:51:05] <LancePodstrong> my board draws 27w at boot otherwise more like 24w under load
[03:51:11] <LancePodstrong> the 8 core prob like 50w
[03:51:16] <LancePodstrong> also it has 12 sata ports
[03:53:46] <LancePodstrong> those atom boards are like the new soekris. small, low power draw, fanless solid state, but waaaaay more capable than soekris. x86_64 and fast. some have 4 eth ports
[03:58:20] <BadCoderFinger> Hopefully a real chipset for USB and Ethernet.
[03:59:47] <juggs> yah - my last purchase was a low end i3 laptop 3 years ago, the atom mini-server board must pre-date that by 2 or 3 years. The hardware death march seems to have finally subsided for those who aren't in the latest GPU or virtualisation races.
[04:00:35] <juggs> I think the OS vendors have realised this too.

[04:07:50] <LancePod1trong> it's nice the race to processing power has slowed
[04:07:56] <LancePod1trong> now it's more about power efficiency
[04:08:31] <SirFinkus> screw efficiency, I want to run df at 100FPS with a maxed out embark
[04:10:39] <BadCoderFinger> When I build a kernel, I want it to be done before my finger leaves the enter key!
[04:11:29] * juggs harnesses the moon on a stick for BadCoderFinger
[04:11:47] <BadCoderFinger> Heh!
[04:12:02] <BadCoderFinger> Still, the faster, the better.
[04:12:29] <juggs> I was of course speaking to most general use computing. Most users do not compile kernels.
[04:13:06] <BadCoderFinger> Yeah, I'm all too aware I'm not the common demographic. They buy tablets.
[04:15:57] <chromas> You don't compile your kernel on a tablet?
[04:16:37] <BadCoderFinger> Heh, closest thing I have to a tablet is an old Acer Iconia W500. And oddly enough, I did compile the kernel on it.
[04:18:26] <chromas> hah
[04:18:35] <chromas> closest thing you have to a tablet is an older tablet
[04:18:39] <juggs> You know what though... I'd kinda miss it if those compiling or verifying tape moments / pauses went away. Those are the time you can walk away and make a brew, or have a smoke. It's not human to work at machine speed every waking hour, the industrial age had shifts for this as people got tired and fell into machines and generally fucked up when tired. I feel we really have to break this link between the industrial and modern age to prosper. It's u
[04:18:39] <juggs> nhealthy.
[04:19:43] <juggs> Just because the machine goes "ping" does not mean it needs attention. It can wait.
[04:20:51] <BadCoderFinger> That's true enough. But the "compiling" excuse isn't what I use.
[04:21:09] <BadCoderFinger> Mostly I go get tea.
[04:24:54] <BadCoderFinger> chromas: It is a tablet, and it isn't. I bought the W500 because I could put Linux on it. The Android version would have been much more difficult. I did tinker with the windows on there before installing Linux, and there's really no way you could call it a tablet. It has to have the keyboard attached.
[04:25:45] <BadCoderFinger> With Linux, I managed to get the onscreen keyboard to work well enough, but it was still not great.
[04:26:53] <BadCoderFinger> So technically it was a tablet, but it really was a failed effort.
[04:27:00] <chromas> aw
[04:27:15] <LancePod1trong> i had a tablet form factor laptop with a wacom thingy back in like 2009
[04:27:27] <LancePod1trong> the linux support for the wacom was not that great at the time
[04:27:37] <BadCoderFinger> Heh, it's still not that great.
[04:27:42] <LancePod1trong> it worked for input, but there was no on screen keyboard that didn't suck
[04:31:43] <juggs> BadCoderFinger, I don't use an excuse at all. I feel no need to excuse myself, it's not the 50s. I'm not asking to get down from the table at dinner. Measure me by the value I bring not the hours I waste at a desk with mandated hours. It's the measurements that are wrong to my mind.

[04:35:42] <juggs> BadCoderFinger, didn't think you were. I was more alluding to the erosion of good management which judged performance on delivery rather than hours sat on a stool.

[04:45:28] <BadCoderFinger> LancePod1trong: I mostly agree. Almost every company sucks.
[04:46:13] <BadCoderFinger> They used to make you sign a doc that said anything you wrote belonged to them. I quit signing those.
[04:46:35] <BadCoderFinger> Now they say anything written on their hours is their property, which is more fair.
[04:46:52] <BadCoderFinger> Otherwise I couldn't contribute to other projects.

[04:49:59] <juggs> That was tried here too.. "anything you invent while in the employ off..." type clauses. I seem to remember it got laughed out of court. I believe US court affairs are a tad more expensive.
[04:52:37] <BadCoderFinger> Yes, yes they are.
[04:53:41] <BadCoderFinger> So the best option is not fight if don't have to, which means (for me) choosing not to work for those draconian companies. They can easily outspend my lawyer budget.
[04:54:50] <BadCoderFinger> You can't choose not to be a slave, but (for now) you can have a little say in who your direct master is.
[04:55:28] <BadCoderFinger> Well, wage slave.
[04:55:45] <LancePodstrong> isn't that the truth
[04:56:00] <BadCoderFinger> I could start my own company, I guess. But I'm a coder, not a businessman, so I'd prefer not to.
[04:56:01] <juggs> If I remember correctly, US has a model of everyone pays no matter what the outcome. If that is genuinely the case... it's fucked up. Looser pays, it's the only way to head of bullying in the justice system.
[04:56:29] <LancePodstrong> yiou can try to sue for court costs
[04:56:39] <LancePodstrong> not uncommon
[04:56:43] <BadCoderFinger> Yes, but you won't often win.
[04:57:38] <BadCoderFinger> And even in a loser-paying system, the company can stack the deck by using their "most expensive" lawyers, and that might scare you enough to stay out of court. Just in case you lose.
[04:58:21] <BadCoderFinger> So two days in court could cost you a lot. It's a tall risk for an individual, but only costs the companies a salaried attorney.
[05:01:16] <BadCoderFinger> I'd love to figure out a system that couldn't be gamed, but the companies have the advantage of gaming it for so long.
[05:01:42] <BadCoderFinger> As you've no doubt seen, corporations are people, heh.

[05:09:11] <BadCoderFinger> Hrm, there goes my knowledge of current events over there.
[05:09:11] <juggs> not necessary.
[05:11:12] <juggs> What current events?
[05:11:55] <BadCoderFinger> In the UK. I don't know much else going on over there except the woman bishop in the C of E.
[05:14:05] <BadCoderFinger> Oh, and the 77th. But that's still on the front page, heh.
[05:15:50] <juggs> Quite... that's about as disruptive as it gets. We tut a lot. The call to arm our police with tasers and lead flinging things is ridiculous. We hung up our swords some centuries ago in favour of democracy.
[05:16:50] <BadCoderFinger> I'm actually with you there. Look what our armed police are doing.
[05:17:02] <LancePodstrong> agreed
[05:17:10] <juggs> I'd rather not.
[05:17:36] <LancePodstrong> the emphasis has been on punishment instead of rehabilitation for far too long

[05:17:52] <BadCoderFinger> That's true enough.
[05:18:16] <BadCoderFinger> Don't we have the highest incarceration rate in the world?
[05:18:30] <LancePodstrong> yes we beat north korea
[05:18:33] <LancePodstrong> we're #1!
[05:18:49] <juggs> If we are wanting to arm our domestic police, we are running scared. Of what? Ourselves? This is our society.
[05:18:52] <BadCoderFinger> Yay team!
[05:19:14] <BadCoderFinger> juggs: It's the fear of terrorists.
[05:20:05] <BadCoderFinger> The stupid thing is, with the IRA having been a force of terror so recently, you'd think the population there would see the phantom argument for what it is.
[05:20:32] <BadCoderFinger> If you didn't arm the police against the IRA's violence, why does it make sense to do so now?
[05:21:18] <BadCoderFinger> The truth is that the governments themselves are running scared.
[05:22:00] <juggs> We never had the phantom argument. We just said FUCK OFF. Gouged their eyes out for a while and then shit calmed down. Some people got bombed in the mid term to be fair.
[05:23:54] <BadCoderFinger> Good grief, is someone actually running as King Arthur in the General Election?
[05:23:59] <juggs> The IRA was never a "force of terror" - some people died, they blew some shit up. The mainland was not terrorised.
[05:24:40] <BadCoderFinger> I'd say the attempt was to cause terror, but yes, "force of terror" is probably not the correct phrase.
[05:25:35] <BadCoderFinger> But imagine what the media would turn that into these days.
[05:27:32] <juggs> A field day no doubt
[05:30:28] <juggs> What would you choose as the correct phrase?
[05:32:05] <BadCoderFinger> I'm not sure. My point was that the IRA was doing what would be called terror attacks, yet no one felt the need to arm the police. Like you said, the mainland wasn't threatened, so maybe it's not a completely valid comparison.
[05:32:17] <BadCoderFinger> But I can't help drawing a parallel.

You know, where there is a horizontal bar where people hang their coats and jackets before getting into some function room. Then, feed the video through a processor that removes all frames where there is motion > epsilon. What results would be a seeming random parade of coats moving back and forth and dancing around.

[21:13:05] <crutchy> aren't bytes 16 bits nowadays?
[21:13:11] <crutchy> i keep forgetting
[21:13:24] * crutchy prefers 8 bit bytes regardless
[21:14:08] <crutchy> ~define byte
[21:14:11] <exec> [urbandictionary] 3byte: (Comp. Sci) A sequential method of organization that consists of one or more bits. Most generally referred to as 8 bits but not limited to such standard. (mis) bite
[21:15:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> screw metric
[21:15:44] <LancePodstrong> wait 16bit byte? since when?
[21:16:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> bytes are n always will be 8bit.
[21:16:11] <LancePodstrong> that's what i thought
[21:16:13] <mechanicjay> srsly, by spreading around karma bits, lifting the karma cap and using a ^2 calculation, you get up with MegaBytes of Karma.
[21:16:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> you're prolly thinking short words or something like that.
[21:17:01] <mechanicjay> of course maybe this idea Mega Bites, I don' t know.
[21:17:03] <LancePodstrong> is there any reason why openbsd wouldn't honor my $PATH variable and execute wrapper scripts in my ~/bin with names such as ls, pwd, cat
[21:17:10] <LancePodstrong> ls runs, redirects output through lolcat :)
[21:17:14] <LancePodstrong> but pwd and cat won't do it
[21:17:26] <LancePodstrong> i can execute by ./pwd and ./cat etc, but the $path variable pretends they aren't there
[21:17:29] <LancePodstrong> works for ls tho
[21:17:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> LancePodstrong, yeah, your rc file may not be being read or they may be in the wrong order in the $PATH variable.
[21:18:05] <LancePodstrong> echo $PATH puts my ~/bin in front
[21:18:14] <LancePodstrong> i can't figure out why it works for one file but not the other 2
[21:18:26] <LancePodstrong> rc file might be good spot to look
[21:18:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> shurg
[21:18:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah if it's being read it's being read
[21:20:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> it may be reading the var back to front though. haven't had to monkey with that issue in decades so don't remember.
[21:20:54] <TheMightyBuzzard> try putting /usr/home/lance/bin at both front and back
