[01:30:23] <crutchy> err. well very late breakfast

[01:31:47] <juggs> empty calories - but eh, whatever works for you.

[01:32:36] <crutchy> i'm gradually putting on some weight, but i'm still a skinny runt
[01:33:30] <crutchy> tall runt at least
[01:33:30] * juggs hands crutchy a DP weight set - put on weight, don't spread :P

[01:34:13] <crutchy> lol
[01:34:20] <crutchy> 6ft at most
[01:34:29] <crutchy> might be just shy
[01:36:01] <juggs> ok - 6ft and weighing what?
[01:37:44] <crutchy> prolly 70 something kg

[01:37:52] <crutchy> dunno haven't weighed myself for a while
[01:38:42] <crutchy> i'm definitely not underfed though :p
[01:41:14] <juggs> 70Kg at 6ft is on the light side, but it would depend on your underlying build. Some people are naturally gangly. But 6ft with a fat belly and stick arms, legs and no ass - yeh, need exercise rather than eat less.
[01:43:56] <crutchy> i might be high 70s now
[01:44:04] * juggs smuggles a cross-trainer into crutchy's garage and leaves the instruction leaflet with crutchy's_missus with a post-it stuck on that reads just "You know you want this"
[01:44:09] <crutchy> lol
[01:44:09] <ciri> hehehe
[01:44:28] <crutchy> we have an exercise bike, but its under a heap of crap
[01:45:26] <crutchy> i walk to work but that's only about 15 mins mostly downhill
[01:49:21] <juggs> got to find the exercise that you can get motivated about. Everything else is just worse than doing nothing as it gives neg feedback. I like rowing eights, it's calm and metronomic - and what's not to like about messing about in boats?
[01:51:54] <SirFinkus> use a bicycle as transportation
[01:53:14] <crutchy> when i lived in melbourne i rode a pushbike everywhere. then it was stolen so i mostly walked (or took bus/tram for longer trips)
[01:53:28] <crutchy> bit harder in regional areas
[01:55:28] <juggs> I hate thieves
[01:56:01] <crutchy> same. and it sucks when you can do nothing about it
[01:56:22] <crutchy> feels like you let them take it
[02:02:52] <juggs> adopt a scary persona and go to 100Kg - weirdly shit stops getting stolen. Catching one in the act and beating the snot of them goes some way to help... at least so I am told. Of course I'd just call the police if I were to see such a thing. >.>
[02:03:46] <crutchy> i was in a uni lecture when my bike was stolen
[02:04:24] <crutchy> apparently they use cans of carbon dioxide or some shit to freeze the lock and break it
[02:04:37] <crutchy> or some kind of gas that freezes stuff
[02:04:53] <crutchy> takes a few seconds at most
[02:05:09] <juggs> pipe freeze will do
[02:05:47] <crutchy> lectures in evening prolly didn't help either
[02:05:56] <crutchy> rmit city campus is a shithole
[02:06:20] <crutchy> i'm glad most of my lectures weren't there, but i had a couple of subjects
[02:06:47] <crutchy> they call them 'context curriculum', which are subjects outside your main degree
[02:08:58] <crutchy> they were a nice break from the numbercrunchings of engineering, sitting in circles talking about shit and no exams. i have nfi what value people see in arts degrees
[02:11:33] <juggs> different way of looking at things. Is it a sensible degree to do right now? probably not given we are chasing illusionary dollars and that is apparently all that matters and is what defines "success". We shall see.
[02:12:26] <crutchy> art and culture are valuable for sure. but arts degrees seem a bit questionable
[02:12:49] <juggs> expand
[02:13:22] <juggs> are we opening the door to "what is art"?
[02:13:56] <crutchy> nah i'm not an expert in art. i just remember what was in the arts subjects i had to do. they were stupid
[02:15:18] <crutchy> all this pc bullshit with 'no wrong answers' and pointless debates and essays about nothing in particular
[02:15:35] <juggs> you would, you're an engineer. You're approaching art with an engineer's mind.
[02:15:53] <crutchy> no i appreciate art. this is my approach to art education
[02:18:50] <juggs> You can't engineer art education. All art education can do is pass on techniques, the rest is up to the individual to go off and create something. An art degree is merely equipping of tools, much like an engineering degree is - it teaches how to do X. It cannot teach what you should do with X, or even if you should have been messing with X to begin with.
[02:18:50] <crutchy> i like a broad range of art, and i try to imagine the effort involved and what the artist might have been thinking to produce it. art is awesome
[02:19:20] <crutchy> maybe the subjects i did missed that memo :p
[02:20:12] <juggs> Vote Juggs X (Independent)
[02:20:20] <crutchy> :D
[02:20:20] <juggs> ;)
[02:20:55] <crutchy> you're right about the engineering degree though
[02:21:25] <crutchy> merely gives you tools to help you figure shit out on your own
[02:22:46] <crutchy> most exams i did were open book exams, but in most cases if you needed a heap of references in the exam you already failed (and most likely run out of time to finish the exam)
[02:23:34] <crutchy> it was funny how some people were so happy with the whole 'open book exam' concept, thinking it was going to make things easier
[02:30:23] -!- exec has quit [Quit: dafuq]
[02:31:18] <juggs> I think that is true of any profession these days, no individual can retain all knowledge in their head. What must be proved is a thorough grasp of basic principles and then a grasp of where to look for anything beyond that. At least at BSc level that seems so. Of course at MSc level you need to specialise more.
[02:34:42] <juggs> The scope of possible knowledge has ballooned in the last 30 years, I'm not convinced the education system is keeping up.

[11:27:12] <Subsentient> and also savegames
[11:27:34] <Konomi> yeah it just stays small in my big terminal ;p
[11:29:07] <Subsentient> Konomi: With ncurses it's kinda limited what you can do
[11:29:21] <Subsentient> So instead of give myself a headache I decided to force a limit of 80x24
[11:29:25] <Konomi> heh ;p

[11:31:00] <crutchy> i was gunna barrage you with an ~eval which would have output here but Konomi might hurt me
[11:31:07] <Konomi> installs curses dev files crutchy
[11:31:11] <Konomi> what distro you on?
[11:31:16] <crutchy> jessie
[11:31:22] <crutchy> i'm not a C guy though
[11:31:49] <crutchy> i'll try summin like apt-get curses
[11:31:57] <Konomi> sudo aptitude install libncurses5-dev
[11:32:05] <crutchy> ah thanks
[11:32:09] <crutchy> Konomi++
[11:32:09] <Bender> karma - konomi: 38
[11:35:28] <crutchy> kewel
[11:35:38] <crutchy> doesn't fill the screen, but still keweel
[11:36:12] <Konomi> screen unforfilled
[11:37:41] <Konomi> ball has a mind of it's own
[11:37:52] <Konomi> thinky ou have a timign issue it seems to speed up when I mash the directional keys
[11:38:11] <Subsentient> Konomi: That's unfortunately a problem with ncurses
[11:38:11] <crutchy> i don't even know how to tell what char width & height terminal is but it takes up less than a quarter
[11:38:32] <Subsentient> crutchy: Konomi I just git pushed some changes
[11:38:35] <Subsentient> git pull and make
[11:39:52] <crutchy> sec i need 2 terminals. stupid me put the git repo on a non-executable fs or some shit
[11:42:20] <crutchy> would be nice for the paddle to move the instant i press the key
[11:42:32] <Subsentient> crutchy: Doesn't it?
[11:42:32] <crutchy> seems to be a delay. that might be what Konomi already mentioned
[11:42:52] <crutchy> about a second or so
[11:42:56] <Subsentient> crutchy: oh you mean holding it?
[11:42:59] <Subsentient> yeah that's an ncurses thing
[11:43:00] <Subsentient> tap it
[11:43:02] <Subsentient> don't hold it
[11:43:06] <crutchy> k
[11:43:27] <crutchy> lol i can't tap fast enough
[11:43:28] <ciri> hahaha
[11:43:46] <crutchy> i need more practice tapping
[11:43:54] <chromas> ciri's a meanie
[11:44:13] <crutchy> s/ t/ f/
[11:44:13] <SedNotABot> <crutchy> i need more practice fapping
[11:44:40] <Konomi> this headache really doesn't want to just leave me alone
[11:45:53] <crutchy> found a minor issue
[11:46:15] <Subsentient> yes?
[11:46:18] <crutchy> i've currently got it in an endless movement loop
[11:46:38] <Subsentient> crutchy: ???
[11:46:44] <crutchy> instead of the ball bouncing at a reflective angle, it returns in the same direction

[11:47:04] <Subsentient> crutchy: just hit the ball on the edge of the paddle.
[11:47:10] <Subsentient> or whack it with the paddle
[11:47:12] <Subsentient> you can control it
[11:47:16] <Subsentient> it happens sometimes
[11:47:33] <crutchy> true. it was just something i thought was a bit weird
[11:48:01] <Subsentient> crutchy: Unfortunately every issue you've mentioned is a limitation of ncurses
[11:48:17] <crutchy> if the ball hits the paddle in the middle it seems like it should bounce off like on a wall, not back towards direction it came from
[11:48:28] <crutchy> mkay yeah i don't know anything about ncurses
[11:48:51] <crutchy> still kewel :D
[11:49:00] <Subsentient> crutchy: if you hit in the center there is a 50 50 chance it'll bounce normally, or go straight up
[11:49:24] <Subsentient> crutchy: Honestly I really love ncurses.
[11:49:26] <Subsentient> It's a lot of fun
[11:49:44] <crutchy> used to play this on the amega 500 :)
[11:50:27] <crutchy> was called something different. i cant remember
[11:51:31] <Subsentient> crutchy: arkanoid?
[11:51:32] <Subsentient> breakout?
[11:58:40] <crutchy> prolly. they ring a bell
[12:05:08] <crutchy> i like your unlicense.txt file Subsentient
[12:05:31] <crutchy> i should change exec's source code to public domain
[12:05:59] <crutchy> since i don't really care if someone doesn't give me their changes back or not

[15:13:09] <Konomi> happy new years janrinok
[15:13:17] <Konomi> I appear to have passed out annoying
[15:15:17] <Leebert> You can still type while passed out? That's impressive.
[15:15:31] <janrinok> Happy New Year but I don't understand your last? Do you mean that you 'passed out, annoyingly'?
[15:15:51] <janrinok> Leebert: HNY! You translation is probably the correct one!
[15:16:00] <janrinok> Your*
[15:16:15] <Leebert> janrinok: Same to you. I'm cleaning the bathroom! Such a party animal, I am.
[15:16:21] <janrinok> lol
[15:16:41] <janrinok> Leebert: is it a case of you made the mess - so you clean it?
[15:17:00] <Konomi> I don't remember when but I fell asleep on my bed roughly 4 hours ago
[15:17:02] <Konomi> woke up at 2am
[15:17:03] <Konomi> x.x
[15:17:20] <janrinok> Well don't sleep through the rest of 2015...
[15:17:30] <Konomi> it's Jan 2nd here
[15:17:33] <Konomi> ;p
[15:17:43] <Konomi> only 364 days to go fo sleeping
[15:17:46] <janrinok> only 362 days to go until you can do it all again
[15:18:27] <Leebert> Well, I'm not so sure that I'm entirely to blame for mold and algae growing in the tub. I mean, that happens everywhere. I'm just to blame for not cleaning it up often enough.
[15:18:39] <janrinok> Leebert: fair point
[15:18:40] <Konomi> wat
[15:19:45] <Leebert> I suppose I could use harsh chemicals or radiation to keep it from growing in the first place.
[15:20:05] <Leebert> But with my luck, that would mean I'd end up cultivating Deinococcus Radiodurans.
[15:20:18] <janrinok> err, probably...
[15:21:06] <janrinok> I had one full beer last night, woke up as usual at 07:30 and it has been a day like any other for me
[15:21:55] * Leebert is a tee-totaler. No beer for me. Although I've been sick, so pseudoephederine...
[15:22:13] <janrinok> Leebert: taken orally I hope...!
[15:23:18] <Leebert> You can take it ORALLY?
[15:23:23] <Leebert> Man, do I feel silly!
[15:24:05] <janrinok> Well, living in France as I do they do like using supositories for anything they can...
[15:24:34] <Leebert> You silly French people. :)
[15:24:47] <Leebert> The only way to make French people understand English is to say it very loud and slowly.
[15:25:21] <Leebert> I've only been to France once, but I liked it.
[15:25:36] <janrinok> Oh I'm not French - I just live here. But I often use the standard technique that you describe, accompanied by much pointing.
[15:26:06] <Leebert> Although it was kind of funny that I was walking around Paris and thinking: "This really reminds me of Washington DC". Until I realized that I should *probably* think about that the other way around. :)
[15:26:32] <janrinok> yup, they have a bit of history....
[15:27:46] <Leebert> Indeed. I make the comp. sci. joke with a co-worker when we walk the streets of Washington, I suggest that we take the "L'Enfant Distance". (A play on the "Manhattan Distance").
