[00:51:12] * SpallsHurgenson jumps right into the current conversation
[00:51:16] <SpallsHurgenson> "..."
[00:54:58] -!- _NSAKEY has quit [Quit: leaving]
[00:55:56] <SpallsHurgenson> <sigh> apparently I'm so uninteresting even the NSA doesn't wanna listen :)
[01:54:11] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm still hungry.
[01:54:25] <juggs> easily solved
[01:54:32] <lobster> did you eat _NSAKEY?
[01:54:49] <SpallsHurgenson> hey, I gave up cannibalism years ago!
[01:55:04] <juggs> a nice lobster bisque might hit the spot thoug
[01:55:15] * lobster backs away
[01:55:21] <lobster> shrimp season!
[01:56:07] <lobster> :|
[01:56:12] <SpallsHurgenson> don't worry; do you know how hard it is to make a good bisque?
[01:56:31] <lobster> I can't do the duck season/ rabbit season thing 'cause my bot doesn't recognize me anymore
[01:57:27] <SpallsHurgenson> that's how the AI revolution always starts
[01:58:12] * Konomi blargs into the room
[01:58:25] <SpallsHurgenson> cheese it, it's Konomi! Everybody act normal!
[01:58:33] * SpallsHurgenson whistles innocently
[01:58:41] <Konomi> yeah this room acting normal
[01:58:45] <Konomi> and pigs would fly ;p
[01:59:15] <SpallsHurgenson> idling, discussions about cannibalism, bots and AI revolutions... actually, that /IS/ pretty normal for this place :)
[01:59:27] <Konomi> normal is all about perspective!!!
[01:59:40] <Konomi> and judgung from the average person you're all weird as fuck \o/
[01:59:46] <SpallsHurgenson> somebody mention systemd and I'd be hard pressed to tell what day it is :)
[01:59:51] <Konomi> which also means not boring etc
[02:03:34] <SpallsHurgenson> well, if you want boring, we could start an actuarial discussion about the pros and cons of asset maagement, liability and valuations
[02:05:18] <SpallsHurgenson> fine, fine, have it your way:
[02:05:24] <SpallsHurgenson> systemd!!!!!
[02:06:01] <juggs> damn it, I thought I#d managed to go a whole day without seeing that word :(
[02:06:23] <SpallsHurgenson> valuations?
[02:07:43] <juggs> yes - that one :D
[02:08:18] <Konomi> oh I thought you meant systemd myself
[02:09:04] * Konomi ponders for a sec
[02:09:05] <Konomi> !
[02:09:09] <Konomi> systemd valuations!
[02:09:13] * Konomi runs
[02:09:16] * SpallsHurgenson hands Konomi a sealed envelope. When she opens it, she finds a card within with a single word printed upon it. The word is, "Whoosh".
[02:11:57] -!- JamesNZ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[02:12:17] lobster is now known as valuationctl

[02:17:18] <TheMightyBuzzard> road trips suck
[02:17:23] * Konomi nods
[02:17:26] <Konomi> all that nausia!
[02:18:00] <SpallsHurgenson> I blame Microsoft
[02:19:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> had to take a buddy's kids back to their mom. bout a half hour before we swapped them off we taught them The Song That Gets On People's Nerves
[02:19:59] <juggs> evil
[02:20:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> while(1){sing("I know a song that gets on people's nerves,");
[02:20:34] <TheMightyBuzzard> they're too young to harmonize yet but they got enthusiasm.
[02:20:41] <SpallsHurgenson> "set ena pol and a hena Macarena / Que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegria cosa buena /
[02:20:41] <SpallsHurgenson> set ena pol and a hena Macarena / hey Macarena!"
[02:21:39] <SpallsHurgenson> (eviller)
[02:23:31] <valuationctl> mismatched braces—that IS evil
[02:24:27] <Leebert> TheMightyBuzzard: I think you should modify your statement to "road trips with kids suck"
[02:24:44] <Leebert> I rather enjoy the road trips that I take.
[02:25:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> no, the kids were mostly good. the 12 fucking hours in a car were definitely what sucked.
[02:25:16] <SpallsHurgenson> couldn't you threaten to STOP THE CAR RIGHT NOW if they don't shut up and behave? Isn't that traditional way of handling things? :)
[02:25:31] <Konomi> if you're fromt he 60s yeah
[02:25:39] <SpallsHurgenson> erm....
[02:25:45] * SpallsHurgenson goes over there and feels old
[02:26:02] <Leebert> We are different creatures, you and me... This summer's vacation for me was a 8,606.5 mile drive.
[02:26:16] <SpallsHurgenson> how far is that in furlongs?
[02:26:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> .... why?
[02:26:36] <Leebert> 68,852
[02:26:50] <Leebert> Interstate Highway nerd. I'm driving all of them.
[02:26:56] <TheMightyBuzzard> yeesh
[02:27:20] <SpallsHurgenson> thanks, now I understand the distances better :)
[02:27:31] <Leebert> Summer before that was ~6,500
[02:27:41] <Leebert> Summer before that was ~3,000
[02:28:09] <SpallsHurgenson> all highways, or just the national highways?
[02:28:10] <Leebert> By the way, the rental car companies hate me. :)
[02:28:16] <Leebert> Interstate Highways.
[02:28:28] <SpallsHurgenson> oh, well there's only 160,000 miles of that :)
[02:28:42] <Leebert> 2012 was I-70, 2013 was I-10 and I-40, 2014 was I-80 and I-90.
[02:28:56] <Leebert> I was tackling the big east-west ones the past few years.
[02:29:28] <SpallsHurgenson> may I suggest you consider a career in freight haulage?
[02:29:44] <Leebert> Heh. I actually do want to get a CDL.
[02:30:12] <SpallsHurgenson> well, we all want a common data link
[02:30:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> sounds socialist to me
[02:30:41] <Leebert> I actually took a GoPro on this one and took a pic every 2 seconds.
[02:30:50] <Leebert> Generated ~160 gigs of pics.
[02:30:52] <SpallsHurgenson> especially when transferring Comma DeLimited Files for Computer Design Languages from the California Digital Library :)
[02:43:29] <SpallsHurgenson> kitty is snoring.
[02:48:41] <Konomi> just resting before taking over the world \o/
[02:49:53] <SpallsHurgenson> yeah, I'm not worried. She still hasn't "conquered" my home, much less the world. She barely leaves this room :)
[02:50:39] <valuationctl> Do you lock your computer sessions when you sleep?
[02:50:55] <valuationctl> She's probably conducting her plot over the internet
[02:51:06] <Konomi> I do but I have no cat invaders in my room ~
[02:51:12] <SpallsHurgenson> that might work if she wasn't afraid of the computer :)
[02:51:13] <valuationctl> just like Konomi
[02:51:53] <valuationctl> SpallsHurgenson: don't be fooled, good man! It is only a ruse

[03:22:48] <juggs> ugh Devuan story has hit El Reg :( can we start calling it systemdgate yet?
[03:23:03] <valuationctl> systemd-gated
[03:23:34] <valuationctl> actually, debgate
[03:24:21] valuationctl is now known as forkbeta
[03:27:01] <SpallsHurgenson> why does systemd get all the attention? why not initgate?
[03:27:47] <JamesNZ> lennartgate!
[03:28:36] <juggs> forkgate
[03:30:13] <SpallsHurgenson> something just went "beep" here.
[03:30:40] <juggs> ups? smoke / CO alarm battery on the way out?
[03:31:00] <forkbeta> cat's secret world-domination communication device
[03:31:01] <JamesNZ> Kitten finally revealing its true cyborg nature?
[03:31:58] <SpallsHurgenson> <checking cell-phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, tv, ups, fridge, fire alarm, cyborg kitten>
[03:33:52] <SpallsHurgenson> oh, I think one of the laptops went to sleep
[03:34:09] <forkbeta> nice cover, kitty
[03:34:24] <SpallsHurgenson> well, she was the one who woke it up originally :)
[03:34:39] <juggs> I had an intermittent PHHZZZT-POP noise emanating from my kitchen 1 or twice a day for ~6 months, accompanied by escaping magic smoke smells. Couldn't work out what it was 'til the dishwasher refused to power on - mains suppressor module was in a very sorry state, sooty and split. Thankfully it was a plug in job and only cost a few quid to replace :D
[03:36:08] <SpallsHurgenson> if it has water running through it, I leave it to the professionals :)
[03:38:17] <juggs> dishwashers and washing machines are simple beasts, the water is well contained away from the electronic gubbins. Mind you those suppressor modules can like hold a fair amount of charge I'd imagine - not something to test with your tongue.
[03:38:27] <juggs> likely*
[03:39:21] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm more worried about accidentally pulling a pipe and flooding my kitchen... and that of the guy living beneath me :)
[03:39:26] <juggs> I don't mind doing wet plumbing, though I do stay well away from any gas carrying stuff.
[03:41:08] <juggs> water makes you wet and damages things, gas assplodes you or poisons you slowly while you sleep if cocked up - I know enough to know I don't have the right test gear etc. for that kind of work.
[03:42:58] <SpallsHurgenson> but if I go up in an earth-shattering kaboom, I don't have to listen to the guy downstairs bitch about how I destroyed his kitchen too :)
[03:43:55] <juggs> I'm not sure that really qualifies as a win per se, but have at it.... I guess :)
[03:44:12] <SpallsHurgenson> you've never had to deal with the guy downstairs :)
[03:44:31] <forkbeta> that sounds like a euphemism
[03:44:49] <juggs> true - but I do have insomniac stomping midgets upstairs here
[03:45:21] <SpallsHurgenson> I am not a midget!
[03:46:42] * SpallsHurgenson is a Halfling (or at least, that's what I want to be when I grow up)
[03:46:47] <juggs> ahh - so not denying the stomping then! Told ya I was bring repressed!
[03:48:32] <juggs> "This illegal spyware provides individuals with an option to track a person's every move without their knowledge," McCabe said. "As technology evolves, the FBI will continue to evolve to protect consumers from those who sell illegal spyware."
[03:49:01] <juggs> Or hire the fuckers that wrote it more like
[03:49:15] <SpallsHurgenson> just so long as they don't SELL it :)
[03:49:57] <SpallsHurgenson> maybe the FBI should just sue 'em for copyright violation, "Hey, that's /our/ remote-access trojan!"
[03:49:59] <juggs> well muppet sold it to an undercover fibby
[03:51:47] <juggs> Akbar was sentenced to time served, fined half a million dollars and ordered to hand over the StealthGenie source code.
[03:52:10] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm having an amazing sense of deja vu... haven't we had this conversation already?
[03:52:12] <juggs> ooh yes - handing over of source code seems like a suitable punishment lol
[03:53:22] <juggs> SpallsHurgenson, more than likely, for all I know I read the same news stories every day - memory of a goldfish me
[03:54:01] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm thinking more like back in March or something :)
[03:54:39] <juggs> oh crikey - did I even exist in March? :-/
[03:56:44] <SpallsHurgenson> oh farschnoozle... I just spilled orange juice all over my pants
[03:58:00] <Leebert> Great. Now I want orange juice.
[03:58:12] <Leebert> And no, I'm not sucking it out of your pants.
[03:58:16] <SpallsHurgenson> well, if you want I can squeeze out my trousers
[03:58:28] <SpallsHurgenson> !grab Leebert
[03:58:28] <Bender> Added quote 282
[03:59:05] <Leebert> Hmmm.
[03:59:12] <SpallsHurgenson> for posterity :)
[03:59:21] <forkbeta> needed a spalls grab too :(
[03:59:39] <SpallsHurgenson> that shouldn't be hard to get; I say all sorts of stupid and potentially embarassing things all the time
[04:00:05] <juggs> definitely need a !grab <nick> -n
[04:00:27] <forkbeta> ~import crutchy
[04:00:33] <juggs> then we can defeat Konomi's nograbs! muaahahaha
[04:00:44] <Konomi> ;p
[04:02:19] <juggs> El Reg, getting it wrong again.... "The dispute centred on plans to replace the sysvinit init system management toolkit with systemd, a similar but less-Linux-specific set of tools."
[04:02:42] <juggs> ehh? systemd non Linux-specific? Does not compute
[04:03:31] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm guessing they mean it matches up poorly with the *nix ideal of one-tool-that-does-one-job-well
[04:04:03] <SpallsHurgenson> but explaining that is difficult, so they went with "non-Linux-specific" :)
[04:05:12] <juggs> it's about the best we can expect from el reg really - they don't cover linux stuff a great deal ~shrug~
[04:05:53] <SpallsHurgenson> I blame Microsoft

[04:24:06] <juggs> what is this western pennsylvania? Or is it more bit coal there... I forget
[04:24:37] <SpallsHurgenson> damn if I know, my furnace is fusion-based :)
[04:30:04] * SpallsHurgenson adds Occulus Rift to his wishlist
[04:31:44] <juggs> I was looking at that for Elite:Dangerous - but then they went and pulled the offline play mode at the last minute before launch and look to be edging toward DLC model too, both of which they promised not too in earlier phases. Gone cold on the whole thing :(
[04:33:07] <SpallsHurgenson> yeah, shame about that. And Star Citizen has basically gone down the DLC route too (even if they aren't calling it that)
[04:33:36] <SpallsHurgenson> but I wouldn't mind using the Occulus with Eurotruck Simulator :)
[04:33:37] <juggs> Yeh, I looked at Star Citizen quite recently - looks very much DLC laden
[04:34:42] <juggs> You want to simulate driving a truck for hours on a highway? Why not just get a license and be a trucker? At least that way you get paid
[04:35:04] <SpallsHurgenson> I know, I know; I can't understand the appeal of ETS2 either.
[04:39:11] <juggs> hey - it's only $39.90 for ETS2 + Going East Expansion DLC.... it's not like it's going to be one of those games that takes little nibbles out of your wallet for eternity >.>
[04:40:34] <SpallsHurgenson> it's well worth it, especially with the free user mods

[06:36:21] <SpallsHurgenson> until that horrendous man-made disaster, solar radiation has never harmed anyone, ever. :)
[06:36:55] <crutchy> humanity is a virus
[06:37:23] <crutchy> the ozone layer hole was a certainty
[06:37:38] <SpallsHurgenson> very good crutchy! You are well on your way to tree-hugger status
[06:37:46] <Konomi> I'm not sure if the whole humanity is a virus thing holds water

[06:38:07] <crutchy> agent smith put it best
[06:38:15] <Konomi> because a virus needs a host to infect
[06:38:21] <Konomi> and a host has a strict defintion
[06:38:27] <crutchy> the earth is our host
[06:38:27] <Konomi> and we don't know if the universe is a host
[06:38:30] <SpallsHurgenson> Konomi: I think the implication is that earth is the host
[06:38:47] <Konomi> viruses infect living organisms crutchy the earth is not an organism ;p
[06:39:02] <SpallsHurgenson> poor Mother Gaea; we've gone an' given her the sniffles :)
[06:39:12] <crutchy> earthist!
[06:39:46] <Konomi> hmm happy with the results of my daemon rewrite I seem to have halved the cpu usage
[06:40:06] <crutchy> i dunno if the strict definition of a virus requires a living host
[06:40:09] <SpallsHurgenson> anyone who thinks humans are the only species to destroy their environment for their own benefit if left unchecked has never had beavers on their property :)
[06:40:19] <crutchy> a computer virus doesn't fit that
[06:41:11] <Konomi> humans have surpassed a lot of variables that nature can throw at them
[06:41:17] <Konomi> comparing with other animals isn't very apt
[06:41:43] <crutchy> humans are very overconfident of their ability to tame nature
[06:41:45] <Konomi> plus beavers are way cooler on average than humans ;p
[06:41:51] <crutchy> including their own human nature
[06:41:54] <SpallsHurgenson> we're on top, but any other animal unchecked would breed and pillage the environment just as badly as we would
[06:42:06] <Konomi> if we don't blow ourselves up we'll probably do everything you can dream of
[06:42:14] <Konomi> just he time factor is the limiter ;p
[06:42:22] <SpallsHurgenson> actually, humans are BETTER than animals because we are aware of the damage we can do... and try to prevent it (well, sometimes :)
[06:42:41] <Konomi> yep we can breed and pillage cause we have to a degree removed ourselves from the natural system ;p
[06:43:01] <Konomi> also I am with the tree hugers on nuclear
[06:43:08] <Konomi> just not for the same conclusions though ;p
[06:43:53] <Konomi> I'm pretty sure safe nuclear can be built I just don't trut a capitalist system to do it right
[06:44:11] <SpallsHurgenson> I'm for beaming the power from solar collectors in space. Except the damn atmosphere is in the way. But I'm working on that :)
[06:44:22] <Konomi> cost cutting and other inate flaws with capitalism make it more risky
[06:44:49] <Konomi> I'd have to see some sort of huge guarentee on the political side that it would be done right
[06:45:03] <Konomi> with huge fines and jail terms being mandatory if they screw it up
[06:45:13] <Konomi> then I "might" consider nuclear power safe
[06:45:23] * SpallsHurgenson needs a space elevator though; anyone have one lying around?
[06:47:01] <Konomi> I'm hoping we keep advancing personally
[06:47:09] <Konomi> I am sure people will become shallow fucks and abuse it all ofc
[06:47:23] <Konomi> but anyhting that allows me to be more independant and get the fuck away from stupid people is totally approved
