[00:00:04] <JamesNZ> chromas: SN would probably be forked :P
[00:00:19] <Konomi> actually
[00:00:24] <Konomi> won't sn switch to systemd?
[00:00:31] <Konomi> the servers are ubuntu
[00:00:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> not until we have to upgrade off the LTS
[00:00:50] <Konomi> might not be as soon as others but eventually if ubuntu is kept
[00:00:54] <Konomi> yeah
[00:00:57] <Konomi> so really
[00:00:59] <chromas> slashd is fragile, don't want to touch it
[00:01:02] <JamesNZ> Shhhh, it's a secret!
[00:01:05] <Konomi> posting sn is updating to systemd would be true ;p
[00:02:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> could be. who knows though, next VM is likely to come in different flavors so we can test other distros.
[00:02:55] <chromas> CentOS
[00:02:58] * TheMightyBuzzard is gonna try building a slackware one.
[00:03:14] <Konomi> enjoy your dep manage.. wait enjoy your not dep management
[00:03:25] <chromas> slapt-get
[00:03:29] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod
[00:03:47] <Konomi> I'm still amazed a distro exists that lacks dependancy management
[00:04:02] <TheMightyBuzzard> slack has dependency management with slapt-get
[00:04:03] <juggs> If SN sticks on Ubu 14.04 it'll be 2019 before it even needs thinking about, by which time it will be a done deal or replaced again with something even more unsavoury xD
[00:04:22] <Konomi> obviously we need a windows server
[00:04:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> damn right, ME for the stability
[00:04:39] <chromas> gnu / basementLinux
[00:04:43] <Konomi> damn
[00:04:51] <Konomi> I just thought new article submission
[00:04:58] <Konomi> "Soylent changes to Windows Server"
[00:05:24] <Konomi> "Due to the increasing penetration of systemd we have felt that the only place that is safe from it now is Windows and will be promptly switching the server over the next few days"
[00:05:25] <chromas> because microsoft gave us a sweet deal on mssql
[00:05:25] <juggs> change the apache messages to suit...
[00:05:28] <chromas> or uh, Azure
[00:05:31] <swiss> s/Windows/OSX/
[00:05:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> Konomi, save that one for april
[00:05:56] <juggs> Welcome to SNCloud Edition!
[00:05:59] <Konomi> meh april is too far away TheMightyBuzzard
[00:06:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> they'll still all be arguing systemd though
[00:06:19] <Konomi> debian will have released jessie far before that and no one will care about the systemd issue anymore
[00:06:34] <chromas> until slackware adds it
[00:06:36] <TheMightyBuzzard> and ya know, i bet we could make sn run off windows if we really, really tried.
[00:06:36] <Konomi> they being a few basement dwellers I imagine
[00:06:43] <Konomi> you could
[00:06:48] <Konomi> but I used to compile on windows
[00:06:53] <Konomi> and you CAN do a lot of things
[00:06:56] <chromas> with 2s
[00:06:58] <Konomi> doesn't mean you SHOULD
[00:06:59] <chromas> or iis
[00:07:18] <TheMightyBuzzard> like i used to use activeperl in winders long moons ago
[00:07:23] <juggs> hmm.. at this rate "systemd" is going to top our most used words lists.
[00:07:33] <Konomi> use strawberryperl in windows
[00:07:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> Konomi, you see the new theme?
[00:07:47] <Konomi> http://strawberryperl.com
[00:07:47] <|> ^ 03Strawberry Perl for Windows
[00:07:48] <Konomi> nope?
[00:07:52] <chromas> juggs: is that in the stats?
[00:08:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> https://dev.soylentnews.org log in, everyone is set to it
[00:08:10] <|> ^ 03Dev.SN: Dev.SN is dead developers
[00:08:12] <Konomi> should I screen SN before it changes forever?
[00:08:23] <juggs> chromas, yah - 3rd or 4th block down the page
[00:08:40] <juggs> HA - systemd running at #9
[00:08:40] <Konomi> haha
[00:08:41] <Konomi> xD
[00:08:47] <Konomi> is that for april ;p
[00:08:59] <chromas> :| can't login; it doesn't like my password anymore
[00:09:06] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, that's for nostalgia. it's going in december/january
[00:09:28] <juggs> I prolly should ignore Bender on those stats - it kinda skews things
[00:10:09] <Konomi> wow old version I have half my karma on it xD
[00:10:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, it's just an old dump from live. don't think it's been updated in ages.
[00:10:48] * chromas doesn't see the theme
[00:10:57] <chromas> unless it's the pink, which didn't require login
[00:11:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh, that's default? nice.
[00:11:33] <TheMightyBuzzard> guess i shouldn't have set AC's default theme.
[00:12:06] <chromas> I was thinking I was already using the pink. alzheimer's--
[00:12:11] * chromas winds back
[00:12:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> just made it today
[00:12:55] <chromas> must've been one of the other colored ones
[00:13:00] <chromas> TheMightyBuzzard: someone needs to redo the logo for it, with a pony leg sticking out of the candy bar
[00:13:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> and "is pwnies" instead of "is people"
[00:13:29] <chromas> or at least "Soylent News…is pwnies!"
[00:14:12] <chromas> I'd set this as my sn theme if it had a dark background :)
[00:14:26] <juggs> my eyyyeeess!! What have you done TMB?
[00:15:09] * TheMightyBuzzard is chock full of the evil today
[00:15:23] <chromas> he pwned our ies
[00:16:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> next one is going to be a vt100 look. green on black, monospace font.
[00:17:49] <chromas> ooh, you should also set it so people who purposely write their comments in monospace get variable-width
[00:18:01] <chromas> so it still stands out :)
[00:18:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> i really need to figure out how to embed fonts too
[00:19:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> i know ya can now, just never cared to learn
[00:19:28] <chromas> oh yeah; if you could send a low-res bitmap font for the terminal theme that would be cool
[00:19:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> zactly
[00:19:45] <chromas> you can also set text to have a glow
[00:20:00] <TheMightyBuzzard> oooh, good idea.
[00:20:08] <chromas> I'm not sure if it's a glow effect or a zero-offset drop shadow
[00:20:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> i'll figure it out
[00:20:30] <chromas> TheMightyBuzzard++ # for figuring it out

[00:23:54] <TheMightyBuzzard> can change his nick and register the new one

[00:46:27] <chromas> Is it true that if I have to ask…?
[00:46:38] <juggs> SpallsHurgenson, I think sucking eggs is a brit expression - no-one here would look nonplussed if you used "teaching people to suck eggs"
[00:47:43] <SpallsHurgenson> ohmigosh! That means I'm British and suddenly have an opinion on Scotland!
[00:48:05] <chromas> Yeah, but it's no true opinion
[00:48:40] <juggs> chromas, yah accounts are held separate to nicks - you can group many nicks to an account. Only caveat is each nick carries its own expiry timer for non-usage, the account is expired when the last nick expires.
[00:49:28] <chromas> Neat. I just throw my nick in with the identify message
[00:49:44] <chromas> that sounds fancier though
[00:50:00] <juggs> SpallsHurgenson, I'm a Brit - I had no opinion on the Scots vote, same as I have no opinion on the N. Ireland position. It's up to them if they want to go independent or devolve powers.

[01:02:32] <juggs> The machine-gunners' dreams of point blank fire into serried masses of Emus were soon dissipated. The Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics, and its unwieldy army soon split up into innumerable small units that made use of the military equipment uneconomic.

[01:34:38] <juggs> TMB, in future have the bot with reg'd nick do /nick <newnick> then /hs group (still identified at this point). If you bounce in with a new unused nick it's /ns identify <oldnick> <passwd> then /ns group. I prefer the former as it doesn't require the squirrelled away password to be dug up.
[01:36:01] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod. having issues getting him idented before joining channels right now
[01:38:15] <chromas> wait to join until you get a notice from nickserv
[01:38:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> means i gotta script it instead of using the autojoin and i'm lazy
[01:39:34] <chromas> you can also use sasl ident
[01:39:38] <juggs> pause before the joins or pass password on the initial connect (need to look syntax up for that one), or use cert auth.
[01:39:42] <chromas> not sure how that works though
[01:46:29] <juggs> things become grey for me in this area between nickserv, hostserv and userserv. Not helped by another oper renaming them funny names so you have to go digging in the config to work out which service bot is which :D

[01:46:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> okay, got em fixed up
[01:47:12] <juggs> by what method?
[01:47:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> hadda get nickserv n hostserv both believing it was a grouped nick. had one but not the other or some such.
[01:48:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> and log in using username/pass so the vhost gets set before any nonsense like channel joining
[01:49:08] <juggs> hmmf, it's one services bundle and is supposed to handle such things. I shall have to test some.
[01:50:50] <TheMightyBuzzard> just had to have him msg both of them group
[01:51:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> nickserv first to add the nick then hostserv to turn the vhost on for all nicks
[01:52:18] <juggs> ns group should talk to hs group and align.

[06:42:40] <crutchy> like in australia?
[06:42:42] <SirFinkus> now we just have some weird abortion of public and private healthcare, in classic US fashion
[06:43:00] <crutchy> we have private and public here too
[06:43:04] <SirFinkus> not familiar with australian healthcare, so idk
[06:43:36] <SirFinkus> well, we have this weird thing where you're required to buy private healthcare, but if you don't have enough money you can get public healthcare
[06:43:51] <SirFinkus> well, sometimes
[06:43:55] <crutchy> we pay a percentage of income for public healthcare, or you go private instead of paying in tax
[06:44:23] <crutchy> so you pay regardless, but you dont have to go private
[06:44:40] <SirFinkus> that sounds reasonable
[06:44:47] <crutchy> seems to work
[06:44:59] <crutchy> people that earn lots pay lots
[06:45:07] <crutchy> or go private
[06:45:30] <SirFinkus> it's similar here, but employers pay a lot of the healthcare stuff for the state
[06:45:49] <SirFinkus> and you only really get the state benefits if you're old or really poor
[06:46:10] <SirFinkus> it's really fucked up and weird
[06:46:25] <crutchy> prolly only works here cos we have population of about 20 mil
[06:46:28] <crutchy> not 300 mil
[06:46:46] <crutchy> public healthcare is a money sinkhole
[06:47:00] <SirFinkus> my impression is that the population matters less, but the ratio of young to old people is the key
[06:47:36] <SirFinkus> so before obamacare, if you were uninsured, you just have financial ruin if you get sick or injured
[06:47:49] <SirFinkus> now you have slightly less financial ruin I guess
[06:48:40] <crutchy> till america can't print anymore
[06:48:48] <crutchy> then everyone suffers equally :D
[06:49:19] <SirFinkus> I think only full-time employees were entitled to company healthcare, which is problematic because a lot of people are employed at multiple jobs part-time
[06:49:52] <SirFinkus> because *shock* companies don't want to provide healthcare benefits to anyone more than they need to
[06:49:55] <crutchy> america isnt very business-friendly
[06:50:02] <SirFinkus> a weird perverse incentive structure
[06:50:42] <crutchy> i can understand though. why hire people if you're not going to profit from their labor?
[06:51:06] <SirFinkus> the healthcare thing is an artifact of WW2 irrc, there was a wage freeze and companies started providing benefits to incentivize people to join their company
[06:51:28] <crutchy> makes sense i guess
[06:52:03] <SirFinkus> and the whole capitalist system doesn't really work if more jobs are automated, which really is the future
[06:52:20] <crutchy> there will be different jobs
[06:52:31] <SirFinkus> if you look at the kinds of jobs people are working in, most of the newer jobs are bullshit administrative tasks
[06:52:33] <SirFinkus> oh?
[06:52:59] <crutchy> 50 years ago nobody could have imagined an IT industry like we have today
[06:53:25] <crutchy> 50 years from now there will be jobs we cant imagine today
[06:53:32] <SirFinkus> but compare the IT jobs gained to the countless jobs lost by modern IT
[06:53:47] <SirFinkus> accountants, filers, door to door salesmen etc
[06:54:16] <crutchy> same throughout history
[06:54:44] <crutchy> success is measured by your ability to adapt, reskill, learn and keep pace
[06:54:52] <SirFinkus> before CNC machining, it'd take a guy hours to machine a part, now he pops it into a machine and the computer will do it unattended
[06:55:17] <crutchy> the loom was a big job killer
[06:55:24] <JamesNZ> I for one welcome our new binary overlords.
[06:55:37] <SirFinkus> the machine may cost a few thousand dollars, but it's a lot cheaper than an employee
[06:55:46] <crutchy> 3d printing is opening up new job areas
[06:55:47] <SirFinkus> so the way I see it, the system is going to collapse eventually
[06:56:01] <SirFinkus> for machines?
[06:56:18] <crutchy> nah. for people designing and making shit
[06:56:36] <SirFinkus> and I don't get the whole 3d printing obsession
[06:56:45] <SirFinkus> so someone designs a widget
[06:56:56] <SirFinkus> 100k people download the widget and print it out
[06:57:01] <crutchy> its like having a sort of star trek replicator
[06:57:16] <SirFinkus> instead of having people working at making the widget, people just download a file and print it at home
[06:57:27] <crutchy> yup
[06:57:32] <SirFinkus> but it isn't, because of the limitations inherent
[06:57:48] <crutchy> its developing though
[06:58:10] <crutchy> everything starts pretty simple
[06:58:44] <SirFinkus> I don't think we'll see mass-market consumer items printed at the home on 3d printers
[06:59:08] <SirFinkus> maybe if we had free energy
[06:59:11] <crutchy> we already are. lots of people running little home businesses
[06:59:24] <crutchy> the arty crafty types
[06:59:25] <SirFinkus> key word is "mass market"
[06:59:54] <crutchy> you prolly thinking mass produce
[06:59:55] <SirFinkus> you can make sculptures, and maybe print a few replacement parts
[07:00:28] <SirFinkus> toys basically
[07:00:30] <crutchy> when combined, home businesses serve a massive market
[07:00:42] <crutchy> sme's are big part of economy
[07:01:00] <SirFinkus> but it's all non-essential goods
[07:01:10] <crutchy> useless_shit++
[07:01:10] <Bender> karma - useless_shit: 1
[07:01:22] <crutchy> everone wants it
[07:01:40] <SirFinkus> and lets say a 3d printing business gets big, how much cheaper would it be to just machine a mold and have the popular widget made in china?
[07:01:52] <SirFinkus> or even at home it would be cheaper at some point
[07:02:10] <crutchy> people will prolly more likely make unique things
[07:02:10] <SirFinkus> basically, the market is small, custom-made, plastic parts
[07:02:27] <crutchy> metals can be printed
[07:02:31] <crutchy> even food
[07:02:40] <JamesNZ> It won't always be that way SirFinkus.
[07:02:50] <crutchy> bike frames
[07:02:57] <crutchy> all sorts of shit
[07:02:57] <SirFinkus> but not on a consumer level, and the energy requirements are pretty high
[07:03:09] <crutchy> they'll develop
[07:03:38] <crutchy> the future is exciting and scary and unknown
[07:03:58] <SirFinkus> I can't think of any innovations that have reduced the amount of energy required to melt steel
[07:04:21] <SirFinkus> and then you also have problems with fumes and cleanup
[07:04:51] <SirFinkus> these are industrial machines, with massive energy and space requirements
[07:04:56] <crutchy> steel making is much more efficient now than it used to be
[07:05:01] <crutchy> lots of recycling
[07:05:09] <JamesNZ> Computers used to be much the same.
[07:05:13] <SirFinkus> it still requires incredible amounts of energy
[07:05:37] <crutchy> tvs do too
[07:05:42] <crutchy> and they dont make anything
[07:06:01] <SirFinkus> but computers were different, the concept of data storage and processing doesn't require tons of energy
[07:06:11] <SirFinkus> not on the scale of steelworking crutchy
[07:06:27] <SirFinkus> last I checked, most tvs can operate on a standard outlet
[07:06:36] <crutchy> if you add up all the energy used by the world's televisions you might be surprised
[07:06:57] <SirFinkus> I'd bet it's a fraction of what is used in the metalworking industry
[07:07:14] <crutchy> it does take a lot of energy to build stuff
[07:07:57] <crutchy> but building stuff serves our interests
[07:08:04] <SirFinkus> look at aluminum production, refining bauxite takes stupid amounts of electricity
[07:08:13] <crutchy> yup
[07:08:31] <crutchy> we have one in my state
[07:08:32] <SirFinkus> which is part of the reason aluminum recycling is so popular, the economic incentives work out
[07:08:49] <SirFinkus> but it still requires huge amounts of energy to melt aluminum
[07:08:55] <crutchy> aluminium alloys are hard to make
[07:09:32] <crutchy> but lightweight makes them worthwhile
[07:10:10] <crutchy> carbon fibre reinforced composites are prolly even more energy intensive
[07:10:17] <crutchy> but they are awesomer
[07:10:35] <SirFinkus> there are also additional requirements for good metalworking, such as atmosphere and temperature control
[07:10:47] <crutchy> alloying is a fine art
[07:11:03] <crutchy> till you handball it to a machine anyway
[07:11:17] <crutchy> but even then qc is tricky
[07:11:29] <SirFinkus> so that's why I don't think 3d printing stuff at home is going to revolutionize anything, at least for 50 years or so
[07:11:39] <SirFinkus> even then, it's a maybe, and won't create new jobs
[07:12:14] <crutchy> when i worked for an aircraft manufacturer, a new aircraft rolled off the line and they filled it with fuel for its first test flight and a slug of aluminium fell out of the fuel strainer assembly
[07:12:20] <SirFinkus> it is neat though, at least for prototyping stuff
[07:12:40] <crutchy> it was aircraft grade astm alloy
[07:12:48] <SirFinkus> that sounds... like it wasn't supposed to happen
[07:13:00] <crutchy> it was a bit messy and dangerous
[07:13:20] <crutchy> the fuel strainer bowl was machined out of a billet of aluminium alloy
[07:13:51] <crutchy> was very lucky it happened when it did really
[07:14:45] <crutchy> 3d printing is good for marketing
[07:14:53] <SirFinkus> maybe I should 3d print a new foot, I just took the bandage off and it's pretty nasty
[07:14:55] <crutchy> clients have orgasms :p
[07:15:14] <crutchy> that sucks. did you have your revenge on the mac?
[07:15:44] <SirFinkus> no, I'd usually go out and give it some 7.62x54r, but I kind of want to get it running again
[07:15:45] <chromas> 3d print a new toe
