[07:20:35] <Konomi> me too and I am not old
[07:20:38] <Konomi> it was irritating

[07:22:32] <NightHawk> But I'm working on an old clunker. Serves me right for trying to run gnome2 on it.
[07:23:08] <NightHawk> switching consoles just gives me a garbled display no console on this one, hence missing the old key combo :P
[07:23:22] <Konomi> something wrtong with your xorg then
[07:23:36] <Konomi> your terminals should not be garbled
[07:23:38] <Konomi> you need to look into that

[07:27:35] <Konomi> the power they use is ick
[07:27:47] <NightHawk> laptop, low draw :)
[07:28:36] <Konomi> hmm I guess for laptops you can upgrade the brick so it's not so bad
[07:31:12] <chromas> Leebert: just think, soylent could've been running on CentOS
[07:32:24] <chromas> NightHawk: Are you using a Proprietary®™ driver?
[07:32:29] <chromas> (graphics)
[07:33:42] <NightHawk> It's a neomagic 2mb VGA running on the vesa driver, so no :)
[07:34:11] <chromas> vesa driver—I'm sorry to hear that
[07:34:31] <chromas> but I could be fun to watch the pixels teletype onto the screen
[07:34:54] <NightHawk> still fine-tuning
[07:39:09] <NightHawk> why do you ask about the driver, just curious about the glitch?
[07:40:57] <chromas> With the open drivers there's a mode setting the kernel does that gives a nice high resolution terminal. It doesn't work with at least the nvidia blob driver
[07:41:42] <chromas> and I've occasionally had an issue where switching to text mode got the display stuck so it wouldn't do anything, including go back to the x server
[07:42:13] <chromas> not sure if that was after a driver update 'cause I didn't pay enough attention :|
[07:42:38] <NightHawk> Haven't got that far yet. Have to load a kernel module or recompile for a nice terminal/console I believe. Just getting the same font as the bios uses if that makes sense.
[07:43:21] <chromas> It'd be nice if we went the way of Amigas and stuff and skipped the text mode
[07:43:28] <chromas> ibm--

[07:46:40] <chromas> I mean crutchy
[07:46:47] <crutchy> chrutchy
[07:46:54] <ar> chromas: no, text mode is awesome. it's OVER9000 times more efficient than guis for things that don't really need a gui (images, videos and web need a gui, prettymuch everything else doesn't)
[07:47:04] <chromas> sounds like I'm a narcissist
[07:47:16] <chromas> you can still have text in graphics mode
[07:47:20] <crutchy> tama, gooeys are full of snot
[07:47:38] <ar> chromas: text modes gave us ssh, which is awesome
[07:47:43] <ar> chromas: and also mosh
[07:47:46] <chromas> besides, your display doesn't know characters, text mode is already an abstraction layer to adapt an array of ascii characters to a pixel grid
[07:48:02] <crutchy> can always run bash+ssh on windows :D
[07:48:11] <crutchy> winbash++
[07:48:11] <Bender> karma - winbash: 1
[07:48:23] <chromas> we can still have a 'text' mode but you should be able to throw lines and stuff on it if you want
[07:48:32] <ar> crutchy: yes, in mintty or that sucky cmd.exe thing that doesn't really even emulate a proper terminal
[07:48:47] <crutchy> winbash is a proper terminal

[08:44:55] <chromas> Did changing the driver fix the terminal or did you have to do other things?
[08:46:14] <NightHawk> Driver alone didn't do it. There were a couple of specific options to add to make it play nice (quote - On some laptops using the 2160 chipset (MagicGraph 128XD) the following options are needed to avoid a lock-up of the graphic engine)
[08:50:34] <Konomi> hehe

[15:46:13] <paulej72> 100%
[15:46:23] <Konomi> thehe
[15:48:20] <TheMightyBuzzard> i think there are like three good lines in there that can stay exactly as they are.
[15:48:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> and they're comments

[15:49:16] <Konomi> I thought audio books wouldn't be as long felt as an actual book
[15:49:27] <Konomi> was wrong about that gave the same marathon run feel at the end
[15:49:29] <paulej72> my favorites are the old comments that say “WTF why are we doing this” but then say “well I am not changing it”
[15:51:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> yep, i dig those too. usually by pudge

[17:34:41] <nick> i'm with you, but we're very much the minority and starting to sound like old men with a 'get off my lawn' attitude, however right we may be.
[17:34:47] <Konomi> specially since it initially starts out with the iceweasel branding then jumps to firefox stuff
[17:35:01] <Konomi> but I am not even old yet ;_;
[17:35:16] <nick> me either, but thats the point.
[17:35:40] <nick> i have only recently started using ff again, and i don't like it... but what else is there?
[17:38:18] <nick> extensions/addons make things better, which is a small token but the landscape of 'the web' is changing with or without the likes of us. I just use whatever browser works and i don't like any of them since Opera decided to jump on the bandwagon and even IE because reality sucks sometimes.
