[01:06:32] <chromas> :|
[01:06:40] <chromas> "The Home Depot has discovered that a file containing your email address may have been taken during the payment card breach we announced in September"
[01:06:55] <chromas> Where'd they get my address?
[01:08:52] <juggs> Was that an email you received?
[01:10:41] <chromas> Yeah. Doesn't have links or scripts, though it does have three or so tracking images
[01:11:11] <chromas> good thing there's no legitimate use for loading remote anything in emails so there's no reason to ever have it turned on
[01:12:09] <juggs> Tracking images can easily be used to validate email addresses in that way. I have my email set the same way - nothing gets pulled in other than the txt.
[01:14:15] * chromas doesn't get many spams
[01:15:20] <chromas> though I used to get a bunch that somehow got the name "Chrissy Hromas" from my username
[01:18:21] <juggs> :D that's a good one

[02:11:28] <SpallsHurgenson> so, um, how about those <insert local sports franchise here>?
[02:12:45] <juggs> yeah, how about that. Quite the spectacle huh!
[02:13:50] <nick> way better than last season
[02:14:46] <juggs> for sure. Those new signings are really pulling their weight. Transformational.
[02:15:22] <SpallsHurgenson> the thing about <local franchise> is they always try to walk it in
[02:16:04] <nick> i was starting to lose faith after last years debacle
[02:16:16] <juggs> well in some ways that is better than <less local franchise> who seem to be all about ridiculous flamboyance
[02:17:05] <nick> hate those guys
[02:17:05] <SpallsHurgenson> I dunno, did you see that ludicrous display last night?
[02:17:41] <juggs> I missed it, heard about it though.
[02:18:15] <SpallsHurgenson> wow, I feel so manly :)
[02:18:34] <juggs> 'nother beer?
[02:18:57] <SpallsHurgenson> 'ere, let me get that
[02:19:29] <nick> it must be possible to bluff your way through those conversations
[02:19:58] <SpallsHurgenson> I think more grunting may be required
[02:20:10] <juggs> are they even conversations?
[02:20:19] <nick> i was going to say, we were probably more in depth than many of the ones ive heard
[02:20:27] <nick> they go more like "<player name> is a cunt"
[02:20:50] <juggs> ha - that sounds about right
[02:20:55] * SpallsHurgenson is envious; imagine knowing a player's name! Wow!
[02:21:23] <nick> im not too bad on the england football team 15 years ago.
[02:21:53] <SpallsHurgenson> Association football ? I thought we were talking sports?
[02:21:56] <nick> juggs, we've all been to the pub ;)
[02:23:00] <SpallsHurgenson> as an American, I take pride in having just pissed off 3 billion soccer fans :)
[02:23:06] <nick> we were talking about 'local' sports so that definition is variable!
[02:23:36] <juggs> :D better than glorified girlie rounders or rugby football with padding and rest intervals every 10 seconds :D
[02:23:58] <nick> juggs++
[02:23:58] <Bender> karma - juggs: 34
[02:24:25] <SpallsHurgenson> look, let's not come to blows over this. I think we can all agree that if there is one thing that ISN'T a sport, it's NASCAR :)
[02:24:37] * SpallsHurgenson takes pride in having just pissed off 40 million Americans :)
[02:24:45] <juggs> NASCAR is insanity
[02:25:26] <SpallsHurgenson> oh, and Starcraft tournaments
[02:25:31] <SpallsHurgenson> (12 million Koreans)
[02:25:33] <nick> i've thought about this, from an outsiders (or just my) perspective, 'merican football, baseball and nascar all have the same kind of pacing
[02:26:12] -!- JamesNZ [JamesNZ!~james@43-567-441-22.bitstream.orcon.net.nz] has joined #Soylent
[02:26:12] <SpallsHurgenson> nick: probably for the same reason: advertising
[02:26:17] <nick> which is what gives the need for so much snacking during something that should be adrenaline filled
[02:26:19] <nick> and that too
[02:27:40] <SpallsHurgenson> ten seconds action, ten seconds annoucers, 30 seconds of adverts. It's been that way for over 100 years, from when sports were broadcast on radio
[02:27:44] <nick> i need my sports to keep my attention
[02:28:18] <SpallsHurgenson> well, there's only one thing to it then... but I don't think you're going to like it
[02:28:19] <nick> when i watched baseball for real at yankee stadium it was all about snacking and talking about the stats
[02:28:26] <SpallsHurgenson> go outside and do it yourself
[02:28:31] <nick> very little involved in actually watching 'the sport'
[02:29:01] <SpallsHurgenson> problem is, there's all this sunlight and fresh air and other people. Horrible, terrible things
[02:29:18] <chromas> Super Mario World was about sports too for some reason
[02:29:18] <nick> sunlight, not for the next few months...
[02:29:49] <nick> will be grey and horrible for a while now
[02:31:25] * SpallsHurgenson waits for the snow and skiing and very small avalanches
[02:32:53] <nick> i'm waiting to leave the country for a while, heh
[02:34:43] <SpallsHurgenson> well, I wouldn't mind going somewhere warm too; somewhere with sun and surf and very small hurricanes
[02:35:43] <nick> you seem to like your natural disasters small, doing anything small makes me question your credentials as an american ;)
[02:36:25] * SpallsHurgenson eats TWO Big Macs
[02:37:00] <SpallsHurgenson> (and doesn't even throw up afterward)
[02:38:20] <nick> i guess you are
[02:38:27] <nick> just thinking about that made me feel kind of sick
[02:38:36] <SpallsHurgenson> that'll teach you to doubt my proud heritage!
[02:39:25] <SpallsHurgenson> like the noble Native American, we use /all/ the cow, wasting none of it! :)
[02:41:46] <nick> you dont have to use it all at the same time though
[02:48:17] <juggs> hmm - kickstarter idea - we'll mince up all the edible bits of a cow and form one giant burger and serve it in a giant bun. Portions will be sold off with profits going to charity. Kickstarter required to cover initial costs :D
[02:48:36] <arti> $1500 ish right?
[02:48:41] <juggs> Probably need to factor in a few hundred onions and barrels of relish
[02:48:52] <juggs> arti - I have no idea
[02:49:33] <juggs> Would need to construct some giant burger cooking contraption for sure
[02:49:37] <nick> somehow i'm not convinced a whole cow would actually make an impressively large burger
[02:50:00] <nick> not saying it wouldn't be big, but i don't know...
[02:50:04] <juggs> ok - 100 cows... fuck it 500.. if we have to we'll put some on the handle!

[20:30:59] <nick> the first lawyer seems like a total cunt, it's like "i have $5000 of medical bills from x years ago which i cant afford to pay and they're taking me to court over, ontop of recent medical bills from an accident at work"
[20:31:10] <nick> "it's going to cost $5000 for me to file bankruptcy for you"
[20:32:21] <chromas> Yep; gotta have money to prove you don't
[20:33:24] <nick> it really makes me sick, i dont understand how anyone can say the system works when shit like this happens
[20:35:02] <nick> she literally ticks all the boxes for a 'hardworking american with two crappy jobs' that the country is supposed to be all about... and still ends up in near poverty before the 'healthcare' system comes to put her out on the street
[20:36:53] <Leebert> To be fair, I think nobody actually says "the system works". It's pretty universally agreed that the system is broken. The argument is on how to fix it.
[20:37:28] <nick> that is true, but to be so fundamentally broken and no one seems to actually give a shit about it, is what really fucking gets me
[20:38:09] <Leebert> I haven't met a single person that I've discussed it with that doesn't care about it.
[20:38:15] <Leebert> True, that's kind of a self-selecting thing, but.
[20:38:22] <Leebert> Still...
[20:39:16] <Blackmoore> now now..the system IS working.. if you are already rich
[20:39:20] <nick> it's repulsive from my perspective, that you can be made homeless because you had the audacity to be human and fall ill
[20:39:35] <nick> and then even worse, had an accident at your minimum wage job which leaves you with another 30k in medical bills
[20:39:52] <nick> which no one will touch because it's a small town and everyone knows each other, so it's conflicts of interest all the way around
[20:39:54] <Blackmoore> and as we've seen time an time again they have no empathy to even understand that you cant just magically be rich
[20:41:34] <nick> Blackmoore, you can, if you work harder.
[20:41:39] <nick> thats what we're told
[20:41:48] <nick> not rich enough? not working hard enough.
[20:43:31] <Blackmoore> yup that's what they say.
[20:43:47] <Blackmoore> funny that most of the 1% inhereted the wealth
[20:44:02] <Blackmoore> must of done a lot of work
[20:44:52] <nick> i worked real hard over the summer on some important contracts for my business, playing my part in the machine.... what did i get for it? client shuts their business down and runs, owing me thousands
[20:44:58] <nick> and several other contractors many more thousands
[20:45:03] <Leebert> You're falling for a conservative caricature, much the same way that progressive/liberals are characterized as handout-loving socialists.
[20:45:27] <Blackmoore> leebert; I'm looking at statistics.
[20:45:36] <Leebert> I hang with some very red-state republicans, none of whom fundamentally express the kind of views you're talking about.
[20:46:35] <Blackmoore> and nick is talking from first hand problems
[20:46:45] <Leebert> THEY, unfortuantely, tend to fall for the "welfare mom on medicaid" caricature, though.
[20:47:24] <crutchy> coffee++
[20:47:24] <Bender> karma - coffee: 909
[20:47:25] <nick> i fall on both sides, being a small business owner (capitalist) and a supporter of the welfare state (socialist).
[20:47:26] <Leebert> Yes, I'm not arguing there isn't a problem. I'm taking issue with the implication that the blanket response of your typical red-state republican is "well sucks to be them; get another job."
[20:47:45] <Blackmoore> the rhetoric? i heard that mostly from church going hard working people. people of good characher. and just scraping by.
[20:47:47] <crutchy> i like trains
[20:47:49] <Leebert> To an extent they espouse that for some subset of the population.
[20:48:00] <nick> knowing the 'welfare moms' are the same people who seem to actually give a shit about other people
[20:48:14] <Leebert> crutchy: Yes! I got another ACS-64 ride this morning; they're really taking over the Northeast Corridor!
[20:48:15] <nick> who let me couch surf during the bad times? people on welfare.
[20:48:27] <nick> who never asked for a penny when i was struggling? people on welfare.
[20:48:58] * Leebert can't have this discussion right now, unfortunately. Attention split in too many directions.
[20:49:01] <Leebert> Stupid work. :)
[20:49:27] <nick> fair enough, it's too complicated for the most part anyways; my only real point is the stupid left/right divide is bullshit and a distraction
[20:49:34] <nick> who's capitalist and who's socialist blah blah fucking blah
[20:49:36] <Blackmoore> *snort* I had a food bank ask me for proof of income (i had NONE) before they would even consider a small amount of food for my daughter and i
[20:50:02] <Blackmoore> and yes they turned me down.
[20:50:07] <nick> Blackmoore, i can sadly believe that.
[20:50:21] <Leebert> nick: That's exactly the same point I'm raising. I think. :)
[20:50:41] <AndyTheAbsurd> crutchy: I like trains too, but our transit initiative (that was supposed to give us a train!) got voted down. :(
[20:50:45] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Don't Get Sick in US November 12 - Nurses on Strike - http://sylnt.us - safety-first
[20:50:53] <crutchy> that sucks
[20:50:54] <Leebert> The problem is the politicians, not the people. Although, unfortunately, the people are responsible for the politicians, so... *shrug* back to my spreadsheets and telecons
[20:51:14] <crutchy> we don't have many trains in australia
[20:51:18] <Blackmoore> yeah. i'm too depressed to take action
[20:51:40] <crutchy> some of our biggest and most awesomesauce trains don't even get seen by most cos they run through the desert at night
[20:51:57] <nick> Blackmoore, i've decided it's futile and trying to side step it as much i can but then having people i care about still stuck deep in the system drags me back.
[20:52:09] <crutchy> trains > politicians
[20:52:33] <crutchy> SN poll: should we replace politicians with trains?
[20:52:45] <Blackmoore> i like the idea.
[20:52:50] <nick> can't like trains either, having taken trains to work in central london.
[20:53:06] <crutchy> it could be like that chuggington kids show :p
[20:53:06] <Blackmoore> i would also suggest tieing politicians to train track.
[20:53:23] <nick> now that could be a combination that works
[20:53:46] <crutchy> problem is there isn't a train big and heavy enough to squash their fat asses
[20:54:37] <crutchy> maybe one of those big iron ore trains
[20:54:56] <crutchy> i will gradly offer my prime minister up as a test case
[20:55:00] <crutchy> :D
[20:57:22] <crutchy> we need a tama in here
[20:58:02] <nick> tama?
[20:58:22] <crutchy> tama is the smartest bot in the entire soylentverse
[20:58:34] <crutchy> it knows all yo mama insults
[20:59:18] <nick> well in comparison to the village idiot known as ciri, the bar is set pretty low.
[20:59:19] <crutchy> sadly it only lives in the batcave atm :(
[20:59:25] <crutchy> lol
[20:59:26] <ciri> now that is funny
[20:59:39] <crutchy> ciri is in there too. ciri and tama have little conversations sometimes
[21:00:18] * TheMightyBuzzard yawns
[21:00:27] <nick> do they talk about systemd?
[21:00:55] <crutchy> they talk on a higher plane that mere humans cannot comprehend
[21:01:13] <crutchy> iow: total jibberish :p
[21:02:24] <nick> also posting AC comments on the site then? ;)
[21:02:44] <TheMightyBuzzard> no, that's just crutchy
[21:03:07] <crutchy> lol. lookout if exec ever gets a jibberish feature cos it has a SN comment posting script :p
[21:03:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> ciri makes more sense than him
[21:03:17] <crutchy> lol
[21:03:17] <ciri> HAHAHAHA
[21:05:11] <TheMightyBuzzard> api can do ac comments now, crutchy. haven't put reskeys in yet either so no speed limit.
[21:07:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> twitter makes almost as much sense as ciri but occasionally it comes out with some gems like pirate dinosaurs
[21:08:36] <chromas> ciri's smart; he just said "Not showing any smart errors... But there's a cure for ebola stashed away somewhere."
[21:09:09] <chromas> he knows what's in the HDDs
[21:10:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> everyone knows that. porn
[21:11:55] <Blackmoore> lots and lots of porn
[21:12:13] <crutchy> cyas after workipoos

[22:04:36] <nick> an interesting experience
[22:05:31] <nick> feeling solid ground 'twisting' underfoot is really quite strange

[22:35:53] <Leebert> It's been the normal for a long time; the new normal is the stupid name for the same concept.
[22:36:31] <nick> indeed
[22:37:10] <nick> question is now will we ever cycle back to hosting 'in house'
[22:39:29] <chromas> "run your own cloud!"
[22:46:40] <nick> well, there is the software called 'owncloud'!
[23:05:36] <Leebert> I've been meaning ot play with that, actually. Alas, I still need to get the ceiling re-installed in my living room, so... personal IT projects are even more deferred than normal. :(
[23:08:29] <Blackmoore> i think we should be offering Cloud services.. just bring in a smoke machine and fill the place up.
[23:08:43] Blackmoore is now known as blackmoore|afk
[23:17:28] <Leebert> :)
[23:18:09] <Leebert> The thing is, those services aren't ALL bad. But like most tools, they have their proper uses, and using a tool because it's trendy is no way to get work done.

[23:29:46] <juggs> yup
[23:30:11] <juggs> only meant to have an hour, became four... ooops
[23:30:20] <nick> thats my kind of nap
[23:31:32] <juggs> aye, I feel well rested. I shall call it my first sleep and pretend I live in times gone by.. the pre-industrial age
[23:32:05] <nick> went back to playing some farcry3 and it still really fucks me off that the damn main missions are so fucking linear. >:
[23:32:40] <nick> i used to sleep twice a day when i worked a regular job, usually finished quite early, have a long nap (3-4hours) and then have a night out or with friends or whatever
[23:33:04] <nick> so i'd have like 3-4 sleep in the afternoon and another 4-5hour sleep in the early hours of the morning
[23:35:54] -!- SirFinkus has quit [Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com]
[23:36:19] <juggs> I believe 4 hour or so hours is a natural cycle thing. I do wish we could move beyond our stupid industrial working hours when it is entirely unnecessary for most work these days here. Makes absolutely no sense that everyone crams onto transit to get to their desk at the same time in order to use a computer to communicate with all the other drones who've just done the same miserable armpit sniffing journey. Pointless waste of everyone's lives.
[23:36:25] <nick> not sure if it was a good idea, but it kept the work part of the day from getting into the social part

[23:37:24] <juggs> makes me chuckle.
[23:37:30] * juggs pets ciri
[23:37:43] <nick> couldn't agree more, the whole 9-5 thing or 8-6 as it has become is not really very useful
[23:38:11] <nick> but also in many ways it's just 24/7 now, which is even worse
[23:38:31] <nick> no one is 'entitled' to any social/family time as such, work must always come first
[23:40:45] <juggs> it's all the plonkers who have fallen for the myth that if only they can be seen to put the most hours in then they will be successful and promoted etc. sadly, they'll be the ones burning out at 40 because why would anyone promote them when they do the work hours of 2 people. (not that 2 x hours = 2 x productivity of course)

[23:42:04] <nick> which in my cynical mind, in these economic times, means you'll probably avoid being let go during 'restructuring'
[23:44:16] <juggs> ha - had that one for 4 years in a row. 4 January's in a row, the entire company "put at risk" - so all budgets frozen, no pay reviews until after the restructuring process. We'd eventually get confirmed as still having a role around October / November... then boom, back in it again 2 months later.
