[03:26:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> feeling the sleep time. you lot are on your own to fend off any frumious Bandersnatches.
[03:26:47] <arti> alright sir, rest well
[03:31:08] <SirFinkus> HAHAHA MOTHERFUCKERS
[03:31:12] <SirFinkus> DATA = RECOVERED
[03:31:35] * SirFinkus feels a little like a badass right now
[03:31:49] <arti> oh yeah!
[03:31:51] <arti> how long did that take?
[03:32:00] <arti> how'd you sleep btw lol
[03:32:08] <SirFinkus> I just needed to poke it correctly
[03:32:10] <SirFinkus> like a baby
[03:32:28] <SirFinkus> so for future reference
[03:32:57] <SirFinkus> if you try and repair a disk in osx and get error 8, hfs_fsck -r it
[03:33:32] <SirFinkus> then use hfs_mount to mount it to a directory, then diskutil disablejournal, then diskutil enablejournal
[03:36:32] <SirFinkus> lmao, a thumb drive just went bad
[03:36:39] <arti> :|
[03:36:58] <arti> you keep rolling low numbers on your 'use' action
[03:37:04] <SirFinkus> inorite?
[03:37:16] <SirFinkus> but I'm so fucking glad this is fixed
[03:37:33] <SirFinkus> I had all the data backed up, but it was going to be a massive pita to restore it
[03:38:44] <arti> yeah i completely understand, 1.5tb drive, right?
[03:38:56] <SirFinkus> yep
[03:39:13] <juggs> SirFinkus, that's 3 now right? 2xhdds and a thumb? That should be your lot for a while :D
[03:39:17] <SirFinkus> id either need to drive 300 miles, or wait for it to download at 80KB/s
[03:39:35] <SirFinkus> the hard drives I'll blame on the construction
[03:39:52] <SirFinkus> never had an un-washingmachined thumb drive die on me though
[03:40:17] <SirFinkus> I mean, I've had to do some soldering, but everyone's probably done that
[03:40:29] <arti> >.>
[03:40:37] <arti> ...yeah
[03:42:58] <juggs> can't say I've ever wielded a soldering iron on a thumb drive no. I did have to break out the iron on a crappy cheap ps/2 > usb converter a couple of nights back though. That was just badly made though - no strain relief or design for movement on the cables.
[03:44:51] <SirFinkus> basically the same thing with the thumb drive
[03:45:00] <SirFinkus> the jack just snapped off
[03:45:38] <SirFinkus> I'm just so happy the drive is fixed
[03:46:08] <juggs> ahh - the other common fail seems to be the dc jacks on laptop boards - easy fix other than the insanely fragile plastic clip arrangements to negotiate to get to the things.
[03:46:43] <juggs> SirFinkus, was it just a minor FS corruption or is the drive starting to fail?
[03:47:03] <SirFinkus> not sure yet, I suspect the former
[03:47:10] <SirFinkus> HFS+ is kind of garbage
[03:47:22] <SirFinkus> and I have another partition that works fine
[03:47:37] <SirFinkus> smart all checks out
[03:47:58] <juggs> usually does :D
[03:48:31] <SirFinkus> until it doesn't :D
[03:48:45] <SirFinkus> but usually D:
[03:49:04] <SirFinkus> I keep good backups though, so disk failures are more of an expense/annoyance
[03:49:17] <juggs> right - smart says "this drive is dead" - well thanks for the warning!
[03:49:30] <arti> "He's dead, jim"
[03:54:12] <juggs> my pet annoyance is with WD power saving and how badly it interacts with ext4. WD drive goes to sleep / parks heads, a second or so later ext journalling process wakes it up to do ~nothing~, WD drive goes to sleep / parks heads, a second or so later ext journalling process wakes it up to do ~nothing~... etc etc etc. I have one drive with a gadjillion head retract count thanks to that. Thankfully some thoughtful chap or chapess released a tool to s
[03:54:12] <juggs> witch the WD behaviour off. Just something to watch out for if you use WD drives.
[03:54:57] <arti> interesting
[03:59:45] <SirFinkus> also the hardware encryption on the externals
[04:01:28] <juggs> I've seen it happening on wd greens, blues and reds here - very rapidly the drive can go well beyond wd's quoted lifetime maximums on that count. idle3-tool is the search term if you're on *nux.
[04:02:13] <arti> irc guys making a living in the hd world eh
[04:02:35] <arti> "l33t0pl0x's WD idler"
[04:02:51] <arti> v0.1.9prealpha
[04:03:08] <arti> greetz 2 v3g4ncr3w
[04:03:15] <juggs> da hell?
[04:03:31] <arti> da fuq
[04:03:43] * arti listens to his rap music extra loud
[04:04:54] <juggs> I just mentioned a freely available tool I found useful - no income for this irc guy lol
[04:05:20] * SirFinkus wishes he had just made several thousand dollars recovering that data
[04:07:20] * arti searches around for some dinars
[04:07:40] <SirFinkus> yeah, give me money guys
[04:07:45] <SirFinkus> at least buy me a beer
[04:07:52] <SirFinkus> 1.5 tb recovered
[04:08:03] * chromas inserts coin
[04:08:05] <juggs> you can call yourself an experienced mac drive recovery consultant now and charge $1K++ per drive SirFinkus. People treasure all their photos
[04:08:28] <SirFinkus> lol
[04:08:41] <SirFinkus> tech support always feels like stealing at my current rates
[04:08:57] <SirFinkus> data recovery seems like a good racket
[04:09:15] <arti> i'm over ts
[04:09:16] <chromas> It does at stores too.
[04:09:40] <arti> i'll help out with software but the support angle is only in emergencies for close friends
[04:10:18] <SirFinkus> immediate family it's free, extended $50 an hour, friends of family $75 an hour
[04:10:19] <chromas> I saw a "deal" at staples years ago for de-malware or something starting at 200 moneys
[04:10:28] <SirFinkus> which people think is a bargain
[04:10:50] <SirFinkus> it's usually me running combofix or reinstalling windows or something equally daft
[04:11:01] <Popeidol> data recovery tends to be either quite easy or quite advanced
[04:11:18] <SirFinkus> I got $75 + $25 "tip" for installing an email client once
[04:11:33] <Popeidol> you can either do it with a few adapters and a freeware program or two, or you need a cleanroom and lasers
[04:11:46] <SirFinkus> oh, and I needed to find a document she had downloaded
[04:11:46] <arti> i prefer candles and sacrifices personally
[04:12:06] <SirFinkus> but it hadn'T downloaded to her desktop, so as far as she was concerned, it didn't exist
[04:12:20] * SirFinkus killed many livestocks for this one
[04:12:24] <chromas> arti: s/sacrifices/massage oil/
[04:12:25] <exec> <chromas> <arti> i prefer candles and massage oil personally
[04:14:33] <SirFinkus> lol osx
[04:14:40] <SirFinkus> so if you mount a folder manually
[04:14:45] <arti> chromas knows me too well
[04:14:47] <SirFinkus> err, a partition
[04:15:11] <SirFinkus> like a mount_hfs -j /dev/disk0 mount
[04:15:28] <SirFinkus> it will change the mount folder to whatever the volume lable is
[04:15:31] <SirFinkus> how fucked up is that
[04:15:32] <ciri> you talking to me?
[04:15:34] * SirFinkus grumbles
[04:15:47] <SirFinkus> why the fuck
[04:16:14] <juggs> I have had many meals out from friends for recovering treasured files from slightly damaged MS laptop drives - the kind of thing that refuses to boot and refuses all attempts at easy repair. External caddy, some free tools - and ~a lot of time~ scanning usually gets the stuff back. But if the heads have completely crashed - ya, you need a clean room and some expensive gear to reconstruct the drive.
[04:17:53] <juggs> They get their "invaluable" pics back that they never bothered to backup they were so precious - I get a full belly. Fair trade.
[04:18:54] <SirFinkus> by the way, does anyone have any experience with any of these online backup services?
[04:19:05] <SirFinkus> I need something retard proof to recommend
[04:19:54] <SirFinkus> not that my clients are retards, but they're usually retired if you catch my drift
[04:23:25] <Landon> crashplan is magic
[04:23:29] <Landon> as long as you get it set up _once_
[04:25:22] <SirFinkus> thanks Landon, I'll check it out
[04:29:39] <SirFinkus> google should hire me for their chaos monkey stuff
[04:29:52] <SirFinkus> since storage devices die all the time around me
[04:30:12] <Landon> hah :)
[04:30:27] <Landon> would you please step back until I push this code to github
[04:30:39] <Landon> finally getting a site up that might put me in the black
[04:30:45] * Landon excited
[04:30:50] <SirFinkus> well, I hope you have backups
[04:32:41] <arti> niiice landon
[04:32:44] <arti> :D
[04:33:27] <SirFinkus> yeah, seriously, congrats
[04:33:54] * SirFinkus wishes he would actually ship something
[04:35:13] <Landon> I hate how writing javascript feels though
[04:35:15] <Landon> so dirty
[04:35:16] <Landon> so so dirty
[04:35:26] <Landon> but I'm nowhere near this productive in c++ or even python
[04:35:42] <Landon> despite only having ... 2 days experience by now in jquery?
[04:36:54] <juggs> SirFinkus, spideroak for smaller data amounts. Encrypted locally before uploading. Good for those critical "the world would fall apart if I didn't have these files" type stuff. I still encrypt file before dropping them into the spideroak hive mind.
[04:37:31] <SirFinkus> ehh, I've actually looked into spideroak before
[04:37:38] <SirFinkus> it seems less retard proof
[04:37:52] <SirFinkus> I need something old ladies can install and it will just work
[04:38:20] <mrcoolbp> juggs, SirFinkus: there is a SpiderOak affiliate program we could take advantage of
[04:38:29] <SirFinkus> oh?
[04:38:46] <ar> SirFinkus: or the opposite - who cares about ebola in NYC, when there's a war in a country you share border with?
[04:38:54] <ar> (just read part of the backlog)
[04:39:14] <SirFinkus> lol I've completely lost the context now

[04:41:38] <mrcoolbp> o rly?
[04:41:42] <ar> ya rly
[04:41:44] <arti> give us the scoop
[04:41:46] <mrcoolbp> arti: so have I
[04:41:48] <arti> did he smell like gnu?
[04:42:00] <arti> does he part his hair on the left or right side?
[04:42:08] <mrcoolbp> arti: not relevant
[04:42:18] <mrcoolbp> ar: what was he wearing hmm??
[04:42:24] <mrcoolbp> okay, yeah, that's him.
[04:42:27] <ar> arti: you're the second person, after crutchy, to ask about his smell. and i'll give you the same answer: i didn't smell him. and don't ask me to do it - i won't
[04:42:41] <mrcoolbp> he didn't smell at all
[04:42:46] <arti> so if i understand you correctly, you want me to continue asking
[04:42:57] <arti> crutchy++
[04:42:57] <Bender> karma - crutchy: 88
[04:43:21] <ar> mrcoolbp: uhm. i don't pay atention to such things
[04:43:21] <mrcoolbp> ar: did ya'll enjoy a nice beer?
[04:43:30] <arti> i think they drink vodka there
[04:43:36] <mrcoolbp> ah
[04:43:36] <arti> exclusively
[04:43:36] <ar> we didn't have beer. i took him to our local hackerspace
[04:43:42] <mrcoolbp> cool
[04:43:43] <mrcoolbp> !
[04:43:57] <arti> that's cool, :D
[04:44:39] <juggs> lol is NCommander getting elevated to deity status now? Perhaps we can sell a "touch NCommander's toe special" - just be sure to scatter saffron scented petals on your way in :D :D
[04:44:39] <ciri> i don't think it's that funny lol
[04:44:47] <mrcoolbp> ROFL: <05+NCommander> er, crutchy, ew
[04:44:47] <mrcoolbp> [12:12] <05+NCommander> Seriously, you don't ask someone to smell someone else over the internet. You know, basic manors :-P
[04:44:47] <mrcoolbp> [12:15] <Konomi> smell my code
[04:44:47] <mrcoolbp> [12:15] <Konomi> does this code seem okay to you
[04:44:47] <mrcoolbp> [12:15] <Konomi> or is it off?

[04:48:13] <ar> i wonder if you could dispatch "respond to this irc line" tasks to mech turks
[04:48:40] <arti> probably could mix it up with a few canned lines and every so often hit up a remote source
[04:49:13] <Popeidol> and then you could populate a channel with the bots
[04:49:19] <Popeidol> and crowd source an entire conversation from one seed line

[05:55:29] <ar> monopoly: you're repeating yourself
[05:59:06] <juggs> make your own. I guess I'm lucky - backing on to my property is what used to be a monastery (now a business meeting venue) that has a small orchard of apple trees - I only noted it as they were dropping apples all over our bin area which just rotted out on the ground. I went round and collared the site facilities guy and presented him with the choice of him lopping back his trees at their expense or give me free rein to harvest before they drop inc
[05:59:07] <juggs> luding access rights to roam around the orchard. Result - I lopped the trees dropping rotten apples in our bin area and get to eat far too many apples :D The only way to do this stuff is face to face.
[06:03:39] <juggs> It's cheaper for the property management firm have me deal with the tree management and fruit harvest than pay gardening contractors who will just turn up with buzz saws and kill everything in sight - given I charge nothing other than their fruit lol
[06:05:10] <juggs> Back to sanity - one step at a time.
[06:15:14] <SirFinkus> I mainly drink for taste, I like cider, but there's like one good brand I can buy around here
[06:15:38] <SirFinkus> mainly stick to craft beers, but I have tasted greatness in cider
[06:26:01] <juggs> the problem here seems to be micro-breweries gain a following and then promptly sell out to one of international conglomerates at which point the product and brand become lost - the recipe "refined" to suit bulk production - post which it just becomes another fad and rapidly dies. And so the cycle repeats. /me goes off to set up a micro brewery
[06:26:55] <SirFinkus> I haven't noticed that so muhc
