[00:02:04] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - The Pirate Bay Opens Mobile Site - http://sylnt.us - ubiquitous-bay
[00:37:16] <chromas> Then the lawyers come, from the mobile-suit-gunned-'em dept
[00:37:31] <juggs> o.O
[00:38:11] * chromas runs from juggs' giant eye
[00:38:33] <juggs> there is no escape!! muaaaahaaaahaha
[00:38:49] * chromas also notices the Related Stories links have + after them that point to non-existing fragments
[00:39:20] <juggs> Bug it, if it isn't already ;)
[00:39:32] <chromas> No escape?! Nooooo!!23 Hey, wait; what if I give you this one ring?
[00:39:53] <juggs> hmm, let me see that ring....
[00:40:29] <chromas> I was wondering if the +s came from the integration of that greasemonkey script for expanding comments; I haven't really been paying attention so they may've been there awhile
[00:41:01] <juggs> what is this "+s" of which you speak?
[00:41:34] <chromas> Lord of the Rings on the Internet—Turn invisible with this one weird ring that makes Sauron mad!
[00:41:51] <chromas> or Sauron doesn't want you to konw about
[00:42:58] <juggs> and what are these mysterious links that link to non-existing fragments? I see two related stories on the Pirate Bay story... both seem linked up fine :/
[00:44:22] <chromas> They're little plusses after the titles
[00:44:41] <chromas> Story Title 25 comments [+]
[00:45:32] <juggs> Oh, I see those - they don't do anything for me though
[00:46:59] <juggs> oh hang on, the [+] seems to link back to the same article as already being viewed.... I may be tired, but what's the point in that?
[00:47:00] <chromas> That's 'cause there's no fragment title
[00:47:10] <chromas> dunno
[00:48:03] <chromas> That's why I thought it might be part of the JS they added. It's perhaps inserting +s but there's no comment or anything to expand
[00:48:27] <chromas> ooh, points; anyone need some trolls upmodded? :D

[00:49:05] <juggs> When things don't work I always suspect my mad plugins are killing something. Seems not in this instance
[01:13:21] <arti> do you use seperate profiles to troubleshoot that?
[01:13:32] <arti> separate
[01:14:47] <juggs> nah, I fire up a different browser
[01:15:15] <arti> "hey this happens for me in firefox, does it happen for you too?" "try chrome!"
[01:15:21] juggs is now known as juggs|afk
[01:16:52] juggs|afk is now known as juggs
[01:20:54] <juggs> arti - the different browser is my 1st call as it is quicker than disabling all the plugin doodads or firing up a different profile. If the issue is the same in a different browser with no blocking or plugins, then it's most likely not an artifact of all the plugins. Sure if the issue is not evident in the other browser ~then~ I'll start messing with plugins to figure out which, if any, are causing the problem.
[01:23:44] <juggs> "just use another browser" would not be an acceptable answer.... well unless it's still the 90s
[01:32:23] <chromas> We should put a bewt viewed in IE 3 button on SN
[01:32:38] <chromas> ~define bewt
[01:32:39] <exec> [urbandictionary] 3bewt: Welsh slang word used for insulting someone, meaning something similar to idiot. Can be used as a friendly insult amongst friends, or used against someone you hate. Comes from South Wales.
[01:32:48] <arti> sounds about right
[01:33:00] <arti> model bewt controller
[01:33:26] <juggs> I thought it sounded more aussie - "she's a bewt"
[01:33:42] <juggs> Although I suppose that would b "beaut"
[01:34:03] <arti> maybe they can't do certain vowel sounds
[01:35:38] <juggs> ahh the joys of language and dialect
[01:36:11] <arti> "she's a bewt" sounds more canadian :P
[01:37:34] <juggs> ~shrugs~ what do I know - eh

[01:57:56] <juggs> 0/ hola mrcoolbp - how's the swag and the recording / mixing coming along?
[02:01:24] <mrcoolbp__> juggs: I'm still at work, I'll be brief:
[02:01:35] <mrcoolbp__> waiting on a few things for the store
[02:01:47] <mrcoolbp__> it's on the way, maybe ready for launch in about a week.
[02:01:51] <chromas> hey that's a good idea—SN briefs
[02:01:57] <mrcoolbp__> (we had a few minor delays)
[02:02:07] <mrcoolbp__> chromas: I don't think they have those, but they have thongs
[02:02:29] <mrcoolbp__> juggs: and the album is getting it's final mastering run, then off to CDBaby for duplication and online distro
[02:02:32] <mrcoolbp__> that's about it

[02:08:31] <juggs> eep, reminds me - I have a cv and covering letter drivel to finesse for an application for a role providing more of the same PHB insanity. Uch, someone has to do it, I swear I'll be dead by 50.
[02:17:51] * juggs reads the job posting again - same old bingo - "follow the sun operation" (we outsourced this shit and we don't know why it's melting), "fast paced, dynamic, agile environment" (ya - you will work 80 hours a week whether you like it or not and all change is great because change - just make it change faster!).... perhaps I need to think on this.

[03:17:27] <arti> what are you attempting?
[03:17:37] * arti isn't a master but gets by
[03:17:39] mrcoolbp__ is now known as mrworkbp
[03:18:41] <paulej72> I need to rewrite the subscription mysql statements in https://github.com

[03:20:07] <arti> ok
[03:20:19] <arti> did the schema change?
[03:20:26] <paulej72> yes
[03:22:05] <arti> where is the new schema?
[03:22:12] * arti is noob with / stuff
[03:22:14] <paulej72> instead of counting pages we are setting an expiration date. dates that are not the default of 1970-01-01 are basically the same as hits_paidfor > 0.
[03:22:39] <paulej72> the new schema is not documented yet.
[03:24:01] <paulej72> subscriber_until is the new filed that is users_info. I think i have that one figured out. just had to start thing in mysql and not perl
[03:24:21] <juggs> paulej72, are you bastardising what was or rewriting?
[03:24:29] <arti> i understand, context switching is expensive
[03:24:40] <paulej72> user_hits gets changed to user_info
[03:24:41] <paulej72> juggs: yes and yes
[03:25:32] <juggs> paulej72, thanks for the clarification.
[03:25:36] <paulej72> juggs areas need rewitten, but others I am just bastardising if it wokss
[03:27:42] <juggs> paulej72, what's the time pressure on this? Surely ripping all out would be the clean way to go to make it most maintainable.
[03:28:49] <paulej72> time pressure is yesterday, and possibly, possibly not
[03:29:06] <juggs> ahhh
[03:29:53] -!- rand has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[03:30:01] * juggs goes back to devising powerpoints to distract the upper beings from disturbing those that do
[03:30:22] <mrworkbp> paulej72: i don't want to pressure anyone on this
[03:31:16] <mrworkbp> paulej72: especially at the cost of maintaining good code on our book (especially in this area)
[03:48:38] <juggs> do it once, do it right and save yourselves from maintaining a rotting codebase for eternity :) I know, I'm an idealist :P
[03:53:21] <paulej72> most of slash is not bad code, so rewiting it to out situuation here makes sense.
[03:58:43] * mrworkbp goes home
[03:58:45] -!- mrworkbp has quit [Quit: Web client closed]
[04:05:24] <juggs> OK. The whole date handling stuff looks troublesome to the outsider. Stamping every page with a date-stamp rather than stamp every user with sub Y/N? I'm guessing there are less users than pages so that would be the way to go. But I'm a dinosaur :)
[04:10:48] * mrcoolbp arrives home
[04:12:03] * juggs think mrcoolbp is lucky to work so close to home
[04:13:52] * mrcoolbp is
[04:14:10] <mrcoolbp> my band jam space is close too, only way possible to do everything I do currently
[04:14:22] * mrcoolbp works ~60/week + SN + band
[04:17:14] <paulej72> OK the mysql stuff is not as scary as I thought. It is the same bacsic two queries with some other stuff added on.
[04:17:58] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: that's good news
[04:20:01] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: have you made any progress of note then?
[04:21:33] <paulej72> At the moment I can grant days of subscription as an admin, I have working preferences for hiding_subscription and the is subscribe code has been updated to use the new date format.
[04:22:40] <paulej72> What I am working on now is getting the emails working (low and expired sub). That requied rewiring the sql calls to use the new date system.
[04:25:40] <mrcoolbp> cool.
[04:26:34] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: when you have something worth hammering, contact martyb/bytram for testing, he's QA
[04:26:52] <arti> originally there was martya
[04:26:52] * mrcoolbp is thinking about promoting him to head of that team
[04:26:57] <arti> they were brothers
[04:27:04] <arti> the martya and martyb testers.
[04:28:01] <mrcoolbp> yes, sadly martya was assigned to the Manhatten Project
[04:28:04] <juggs> they were both lizards... I have the proof
[04:28:12] * mrcoolbp doesn't like to talk about it
[04:28:33] <arti> hhaha
[04:29:03] * mrcoolbp checks piwik stats
[04:29:50] <juggs> and....
[04:31:08] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: what is subscription cost? $20/year?
[04:31:25] <mrcoolbp> juggs: I'm doing some basic calcs
[04:32:03] <paulej72> I think that is what we are doing although it will be $20 for 365 days
[04:32:12] <mrcoolbp> sure
[04:32:17] <mrcoolbp> okay
[04:32:53] <paulej72> that way admins can grant 35 days of sub time to a user for a perk
[04:33:14] <mrcoolbp> cool
[04:33:59] <bryan> mrcoolbp: get your usb drive in the mail yet?
[04:34:02] <paulej72> you can look at the new sub page on dev: http://dev.soylentnews.org
[04:34:03] <ciri> 14Title(03UTF-8 14/ 03361.091ms.14)[1]: 03- Dev.SN User
[04:34:10] <mrcoolbp> k
[04:36:00] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: shall I ignore the "buy" section for now?
[04:36:35] <paulej72> yes i have not worked all the way through that section yet
[04:36:42] <mrcoolbp> okay then
[04:36:43] * mrcoolbp grants himself a dev subscription
[04:38:42] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: I granted myself 4 days (I think I deserve that at least)
[04:38:57] <paulej72> :)
[04:38:59] <mrcoolbp> = )
[04:40:23] <paulej72> the prefs on the bottom work as well (there is a cache problem that the settings do not show up when you hit save), but wil show up if you reload the page.
[04:40:34] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Trend Micro Caught Lying over Andriod Security - http://sylnt.us - pinch-of-salt
[04:42:32] <juggs> and so it begins
[04:43:03] * juggs goes to lie down
[04:43:17] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: my subscription ends 1970-01-05 UTC.
[04:43:34] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: paulej72: based on terrible late-night calcs, we'll be in the back in 1-2 months...
[04:43:43] <paulej72> did you reload the page
[04:43:51] juggs is now known as juggs|afk
[04:43:52] <mrcoolbp> yeah
[04:43:56] <paulej72> crap my code is shit
[04:44:22] <paulej72> need to add the days from today if the date is in the past
[04:44:56] <mrcoolbp> We'll likely be in the black, but it appears we won't be able to hire a full-time staff memeber based on my calcs here
[04:45:13] <mrcoolbp> not yet anyway
[04:45:22] <mrcoolbp> But being in the black would be good
[04:45:43] <paulej72> or I could be a prick like most mainteance contracts and you have to pay up your subscription to today first before adding on :)
[04:45:59] <mrcoolbp> I'm fine with that
[04:46:15] <mrcoolbp> pay upfront for a year
[04:46:27] <paulej72> 44 * 20 is what now
[04:46:40] <mrcoolbp> 880
[04:47:21] <mrcoolbp> where are you getting 44?
[04:47:39] <paulej72> that is what each user would need to pay under the maintenacne mode model to get a new sub since all of the dates default to 1970
[04:48:15] * mrcoolbp understands about 64% of that
[04:49:35] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: we'll need to add a link to "Subscription" on the left nav-slashbox under: "you"
[04:50:03] <stderr> paulej72: It's hardly fair to pay for the first 43 years where SoylentNews wasn't around.
[04:50:24] <paulej72> :)
[04:50:28] <mrcoolbp> stderr: comeon, I thought you were dedicated to this project = )
[04:50:46] <stderr> mrcoolbp: HA! Not at all...
[04:50:53] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: when does the next code-deploy-to-prod drop?
[04:51:03] <mrcoolbp> stderr: not meant as a jab mind you = )
[04:51:23] <stderr> Hmm, make that the first 44 years... (Damn, off-by-one error...)
[04:51:25] <paulej72> mrcoolbp: not until we have the subscription code working
[04:52:09] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: when was it *supposed* to drop?
[04:52:28] <mrcoolbp> Aug 1?
[04:52:44] <paulej72> Aug 1, but that is a firday and I will need the weekend for this
[04:52:50] <mrcoolbp> yes
[04:53:01] <stderr> Just drop it... :-)
[04:53:15] * mrcoolbp holds tightly trying not to drop it
[04:53:33] <stderr> mrcoolbp: Drop it like it's hot?
[04:53:38] <mrcoolbp> yes
[04:53:45] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: I think we'll have the store go-live status in 7-10 days
[04:53:58] <mrcoolbp> that is beyond my original estimate by over a week
[04:54:09] <paulej72> shit happens :)
[04:54:20] <mrcoolbp> but, we are changing gears a bit and gunning for zazzle rather then CafePress
[04:54:49] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: so they may both be ready around similar times
[04:55:11] <paulej72> probably

[04:56:21] <mrcoolbp> bryan: hellz yah
[04:56:29] <bryan> cool cool
[04:56:40] <mrcoolbp> bryan, don't be offended, but I loaded all my SN stuff on it as another backup

[04:59:06] <mrcoolbp> they are lubed up and protected against the horrible elements I subject my guitar to
[04:59:11] * mrcoolbp plays the video
[04:59:12] <SirFinkus> lol they look like a pack of rubbers
[04:59:55] <SirFinkus> got some D'Addarios
[05:00:07] <mrcoolbp> those are "deace"
[05:00:13] <mrcoolbp> coated?

[05:01:48] <mrcoolbp> they last a while too if you don't break them

[05:02:12] <SirFinkus> yeah, I will once these ones go bad or break

[05:03:19] <paulej72> days i mean, pages was the old lingo sorry
[05:03:22] <mrcoolbp> SirFinkus: you better. Or else
[05:03:25] <mrcoolbp> paulej72: k

[05:04:16] <SirFinkus> I actually like the strings that came on the guitar the best, go figure
[05:04:29] <mrcoolbp> lol
[05:04:54] <SirFinkus> probably because they were installed by someone who knew what they were doing

[12:44:28] <Bytram> that would lead to an option for # discussion #

[12:45:32] <Bytram> I looked at it too long while *writing* it, I need someone to look it over and role play with it and see if there are any *obvious* deficiencies.
[12:45:48] <crutchy> was going to make it fairly flexible (a few options for yay/nay)
[12:46:01] <Bytram> as it now stands, we have 3 board members... vote tallying is pretty easy atm. =)
[12:46:38] <crutchy> i'm happy to help. i'm trolling this joint most days anyway. might as well make myself useful
[12:47:06] <Bytram> but flagging in the log, what the motion was, and what the result of voting was, in an automated fashion, would be simplified if we had "sentinel" values to look for and trigger from.
[12:47:51] <Bytram> just thinking out loud, but maybe something like bracketting meeting "actions" with # symbols?
[12:48:01] <Bytram> e.g. #motion# text of the motion
[12:48:09] <Bytram> #vote# aye

[12:48:39] <crutchy> not necessarily any trigger needed
[12:48:46] <Bytram> I don't see the use in that, anyone can just follow along on IRC
[12:49:02] <Bytram> hmmm, can a nick start with a punctuation character?
[12:49:11] crutchy is now known as _
[12:49:16] <_> yup :-D
[12:49:24] _ is now known as crutchy
[12:49:28] <Bytram> hmmm, I could NOT use a # character to start my nick
[12:49:46] <crutchy> channels can also start with @
[12:49:56] <crutchy> (but not registered with CS)
[12:50:00] <Bytram> btw, one other thought is that the person who is running the meeting is NOT important; everything should be addressed to the "Chair"
[12:50:14] <Bytram> chair: motion to adjourn.
[12:50:26] <Bytram> hmm, too early in the morning to think straight.
[12:50:36] <Bytram> I'd forgotten about that.
[12:50:45] <crutchy> i was going to add a chair feature, but include a handover function is the chair has to leave
[12:50:55] <crutchy> *if
[12:51:04] <Bytram> that is key... it's the *position/role* not the person.
[12:51:30] <Bytram> ok, would love to chat... gotta get ready for the day.
[12:51:35] <crutchy> the first chair would be the initiator of the meeting command
[12:51:38] <crutchy> np
[12:51:40] <Bytram> will check back in before I go
[12:51:41] <crutchy> haf fun
[12:51:52] <crutchy> i'll start scribbling some wiki notes
[12:51:57] <crutchy> somewhere
[12:51:58] <Bytram> that's the general idea; the chair takes on the nick and runs things;
[12:52:11] <Bytram> and *guides* things from there.
[12:52:27] <Bytram> some laxity is permitted so long as things are moving ahead and making progress
[12:52:48] <Bytram> if things start degenerating, the chair can call things back to order and be more 'formal'
[12:52:54] <crutchy> bit of color from the bot just to break things up a bit (but excluded from log)
[12:53:08] <Bytram> so, guide, don't dominate/control unless *necessary*
[12:53:47] <Bytram> given the bunch we have now, I don't see that as being an issue, but trying to plan ahead for what might be a problem in the future and try to set reasonable precedents
[12:53:59] <crutchy> could be one of those evolving things
[12:54:21] <Bytram> btw, if you see TheMightyBuzzard or paulej72 or any other dev, please have em take a look at my comments I just posted a few minutes ago on #dev
[12:54:23] <Bytram> thanks!
[12:54:23] <crutchy> i'll work on a proof of concept that can be pilfered if useful
[12:54:28] <Bytram> nod nod
[12:54:32] <crutchy> oky dokes
[12:54:40] <Bytram> ok gtg; nice 'seeing' ya again!!
