[02:41:12] <DashComma> [SoylentNews] - Girl Scouts Get a Badge in Intellectual Property - http://sylnt.us - propaganda-for-the-kids
[02:44:16] <stderr> Can I get one for IPv6?
[02:44:29] <stderr> Oh, wait... I already got the t-shirt.
[02:44:55] <SpallsHurgenson> I wonder if they mean really respecting what copyright really stands for - a temporary monopoly given to creators to encourage the science and arts for the benefit of our shared culture - or if they mean mindlessly obeying laws which benefit large corporations by locking that culture behind a legal framework that never expires and can increasingly only be accessed temporarily for a fee
[02:47:43] * n1 ponders
[02:47:45] <n1> i wonder...
[02:49:17] <stderr> Someone should tell the girl scouts that copyright means that they can't just copy a picture of one of the Disney princesses...
[02:49:35] <stderr> And BTW: I was serious about the t-shirt. :-) http://blog.he.net
[02:51:36] <n1> "IPO Education Foundation is excited about the opportunity to work with the GSCNC and the USPTO to bring the patent system to girls through the IP patch"
[02:52:15] <SpallsHurgenson> "Remember kids, say no to copying!"
[02:52:22] <SpallsHurgenson> Hey, it worked for drugs, right?
[02:52:29] <SpallsHurgenson> Oh, wait, it didn't? Hmmm....
[02:52:49] <n1> well in that case
[02:52:53] <n1> it could be copywrong law
[02:53:01] <n1> otherwise you're going to confuse the kids
[02:53:38] -!- FunPika has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[02:56:04] <n1> although maybe not, if we stop teaching the kids about their 'rights' and 'right and wrong'. just "the law says x, do what you're told."
[02:56:52] <SpallsHurgenson> From what I remember of the Scouts, right and wrong is what the authority figures say!
[02:57:27] <n1> used to be a scout?
[02:58:36] <SpallsHurgenson> I loved wearing those little green skirts :)
[02:58:56] <bytram> hey guys! You're having a great conversation... why not put it up on SN?
[02:59:31] <n1> someone needs to make some comments!
[03:00:03] <bytram> that is *exactly* what I meant!
[03:00:31] <n1> i know, but if i start commenting on stories i put up, im going to just end up talking to myself :P
[03:01:13] <SpallsHurgenson> I'd type up a comment but unfortunately I am functionally illiterate
[03:01:48] <n1> too much time prancing around in your little green skirt
[03:02:33] <SpallsHurgenson> you're just jealous I have the legs for it and you don't! :)
[03:03:13] <SpallsHurgenson> plus, you know... free cookies :)

[03:05:23] * stderr wakes up...

[09:57:54] <arti> talker mud? party line?
[09:58:39] <crutchy> i was thinking a little map based mud where character strength is somehow derived from the use of unique words in chat logs

[10:00:54] <crutchy> looks mad
[10:01:08] <arti> new dimension of multiplayer
[10:01:09] <crutchy> i was thinking individual characters :-P
[10:02:03] <arti> could be cool, going to extend your bot to do this?

[10:10:25] <xlefay> While I was eating it I couldn't help but wonder why bananas exist.
[10:11:04] <crutchy> why is there a why in why?
[10:11:35] <xlefay> The only reason I found so far is "the unending unwarranted sexual references.", anyone else come up with another reason?
[10:16:32] <crutchy> dunno. bananas taste like crap

[14:55:58] <SirFinkus> I usually use "'sup"
[14:56:48] -!- Cyprus [Cyprus!~Cyprus@68.63.ljr.ppx] has joined #Soylent
[14:56:48] <youngatheart> I'm setting up a template for a computer to use and I feel like a computer using the word "Dear" is somehow offensive, but am having trouble backing up that feeling with links
[14:57:37] <SirFinkus> seriously though, "Dear" sounds wrong to me too, but I doubt anyone would be offended by it
[14:58:58] <SirFinkus> with emails, I don't usually put the person's name, even with business things
[15:01:55] <youngatheart> http://www.forbes.com
[15:02:18] <youngatheart> I've been in the habit for some time of using "Bob McAlister:" type salutations
[15:03:59] <youngatheart> but I'm dealing with someone elses' templates and they use Dear for computer generated form emails. It seems distasteful to me. I think "Dear" bothers me a little, because it seems like you're supposed to believe this person is thinking of you in a kind manner, which I can tolerate from a person but dislike hearing from a machine
[15:05:44] <SirFinkus> I don't think people really think of the meaning of "Dear" anymore, it's just a stock phrase
[15:06:24] <youngatheart> Maybe that's the problem. Most people don't think about the words they use.
[15:06:53] <TK> I don't think I've ever started an email with "Dear", unless it was to a family member
[15:07:05] <TK> Usually it's FirstName,
[15:07:16] <TK> or Mr/Mrs/Ms Lastname,
[15:07:24] <youngatheart> I decided at one point that I wouldn't tell any sort of lie for any reason. I was a quiet person for a while after that. Then I learned to speak like a politician. Then I grew out of that phase, but I still think about what the words I use actually mean
[15:07:29] <TK> Depending on the nature of the correspondence
[15:07:47] <SirFinkus> well, I think about it too, but I don't think most people do
[15:08:09] <youngatheart> I don't think most people think much
[15:09:11] <TK> I'm looking back at some emails I got from vendors over the last couple weeks, and "dear" does seem pretty common
[15:09:39] <SirFinkus> I agonize about every sentence I write, it can take me a half hour to write a 1 paragraph comment
[15:09:57] <SirFinkus> I'm a terrible writer, but I can brute force well enough
[15:10:14] <TK> If this is a template for automated messages, the more formal the better
[15:10:43] <TK> Because people are going to glance over the first line "dear to whom it may concern," and look at the substance
[15:10:47] <SirFinkus> what kind of message is it? marketing? billing? customer service?
[15:10:53] <youngatheart> thinking I should change it to "My Dearest"
[15:11:06] <TK> To the keeper of my heart,
[15:11:22] <TK> I hope this email finds you well
[15:11:34] <youngatheart> SirFinkus: yeah, all of those. New system, alerts people to various states of their automated activities, what happened to their money, why their lights got turned off, car repossed etc :P
[15:11:37] <SirFinkus> "If you're reading this, I'm dead"
[15:11:53] <youngatheart> actual lol@ "To the keeper f my heart,"
[15:11:55] <Cyprus> let's be honest, it's probably spam =)
[15:12:31] <SirFinkus> "To my dearest lover, Do you want an extra 1" in only 30 days?"
[15:12:32] <youngatheart> its stuff people actually want to know, but it is obviously a computerized notice
[15:12:58] <TK> , but I regret to inform you that your $son_daughter was found $misdemeanor on the grounds of $school on the day of $date
[15:13:36] <SirFinkus> most of the noticy type things I've recieved have dear <name> in them fwiw

[15:13:53] <TK> Please attend $meeting on $date so that we may discuss $pronoun punishment.
[15:14:08] <SirFinkus> my bank doesn't even use my name, it's just "Dear member"
[15:14:16] <youngatheart> SirFinkus: Yeah, that's what I'm finding and it seems distasteful
[15:14:36] <youngatheart> but it's what I'll probably go with, unless I can't resist "To the keeper of my heart,"
[15:15:48] <SirFinkus> just the name and a comma seems a little abrupt to me
