[04:24:27] -!- Regurgitator has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[04:24:49] * Bytram just got home, saw your journal reply, and came to try it out before sending my own reply. =)
[04:26:12] <juggs> a mind reader how?
[04:27:02] <Bytram> I *just* got home, saw your journal reply, and came to try it out before sending my own reply. As I was about to type "!rss", I see you pop up and do it for me!
[04:27:14] <Bytram> =)
[04:28:24] <Bytram> I've got a couple more feeds to request: http://www.sciencedaily.com http://www.nasa.gov and http://www.jpl.nasa.gov
[04:29:04] <juggs> Bytram, I'm working on the sort for the !rss response now. I've got the list sorted prior to pushing it out in the response text, but something in the output routine is barfing on the order list. Sodding TCL script ~grrrr~
[04:30:00] <Bytram> TCL? really? as in TCL/TK? Man, I haven't used *that* in like 20 years!
[04:30:16] * Bytram offers juggs a couple of aspirin.
[04:31:53] <Bytram> juggs: And yet another couple of RSS feeds: http://feeds.nature.com and https://www.sciencemag.org
[04:32:14] <juggs> Bytram, I'll add those feeds once I get this sort thing done. And yup TCL/TK, it's what eggdrop uses. It's not helping that the rss syndication script uses a revolting XML schema for its database files either
[04:35:01] <Bytram> Ouch. I feel your pain. Blegh!!!!
[04:35:56] <Bytram> out of curiosity, as it has been so long, can you shell out of TCL to have the OS do it for you as part of a pipeline?
[04:37:13] <juggs> Sure, but TCL has its own lsort (list sort) command anyway - I'm obviously just not implementing it right
[04:37:18] <Bytram> IOW, write your original list to a temporary file; use the OS's sort on it (possibly sending to a different temp file), and then read that in?
[04:38:03] <Bytram> heh; I hear ya. I do a lot with GAWK; it has a buit-in sort, and every time I want to use it, I gotta look up the documentation. :/
[04:38:16] <Bytram> s/buit-in/built-in/
[04:38:43] <juggs> yeh, I tend to pick up an eggdrop mission every year or so and then wish I chose something else :D
[04:39:01] <Bytram> I'll leave you alone; thanks so very much for all your hard work -- I really appreciate it!!!!!

[05:07:19] <Bytram> Super!
[05:08:00] <Bytram> The alphabetized list is a great help! thanks you!
[05:09:16] <Bytram> !nasa
[05:11:29] <juggs> the !nasa pulls "http://www.nasa.gov/rss/dyn/breaking_news.rss" is that much different to your request for "http://www.nasa.gov/content/nasa-rss-feeds/" ??
[05:11:34] <juggs> Bytram ^
[05:13:17] <juggs> Ahh "http://www.nasa.gov/content/nasa-rss-feeds/" isn't actually a feed, more a page of available feeds. Let me know if you want more than just Breaking News
[05:16:06] <Bytram> yeah, I was just looking around for feeds that looked interesting; could be enough of a dupe that you can ignore that suggestion.
[05:16:59] <Bytram> otoh, it's hard to tell from the output of regurgitator, what is the *name* of the feed it came from.
[05:18:28] <Bytram> A stab in the dark, but maybe preface each line it outputs with the feed name?
[05:18:36] <Bytram> so, I'd see something like:
[05:19:10] <juggs> Really? The first thing on the output is the feed name in bold
[05:19:30] <Bytram> hmmm, nah, that wouldn't do it. Thinking out loud has its problems.
[05:20:45] <juggs> What IRC client are you using? The feed name is [In Brackets] in bold each time Regurgitator spits out an update
[05:21:02] <Bytram> I guess my puzzzlement is that I am having diffulty now wha !feed is being used in a given record that comes out. But, also, knowing where, e.g. !nasa is mapped to.
[05:21:43] <Bytram> juggs: yes, and no. try issuing !nasa
[05:21:50] <juggs> !nasa
[05:22:24] <Bytram> each entry starts with "[NASA Breaking News]" which is NOT the same as "!nasa" that's part of my confusion.
[05:23:15] <Bytram> the other part is that it's not clear to me what "!nasa" maps to as a feed; what is the exact URL it is reading from? Can't see it from my side of the world.
[05:24:09] <Bytram> I'm not sure how to go about improving the situation, though.
[05:24:28] <juggs> But it is the only NASA feed so I didn;t bother elaborating on the trigger. e.g. for the NIST feeds I broke those down to !nist-buildfire, !nist-chemistry etc.
[05:25:39] <juggs> Perhaps me need a !rss-elaborate trigger that is similar to !rss but details the url it is sucking in as well
[05:25:46] <Bytram> Good. but "!nist-buildfire" reads *what* rss feed? From my perspective, it's just a name of some sort.
[05:25:48] <juggs> s/me/we/
[05:25:53] <Bytram> BINGO! that's the idea!
[05:26:20] <juggs> http://www.nist.gov
[05:26:22] <Bytram> h, "!rss full"
[05:26:49] <Bytram> !nasa describe
[05:27:02] <juggs> aha another good idea!
[05:27:12] <Bytram> !nist-buildfire describe
[05:27:22] <Bytram> !nist-buildfire 10
[05:27:39] <Bytram> the last one is all-numeric, so it means I want to see the last 10 entries
[05:27:54] <Bytram> !nasa 12h
[05:28:34] <Bytram> would show me all feed items that appeared for !nasa in the last 12 hours.
[05:29:31] <Bytram> (note 12hrs = 60 * 60 * 12 seconds before now. So logging a unix time_t along with each entry as it arrives should make it tractable.
[05:29:45] <Bytram> but I know I'm dreaming a bit on that one, but nice to plan ahead for the future, no?
[05:32:38] <juggs> The numeric one should not be so hard. The time factored one would be a pain in the ass thanks to the shitty XML storage structure - it is currently one big XML blob per feed. If we want to get to there I wouldn't start from here if you know what I mean. Once I get a list of all the requirements, I may end up canning this current deployment and rewriting from scratch with a lightweight DB behind it - that would make these kinds of querying options s
[05:32:38] <juggs> oooo much easier.

[05:35:11] <Bytram> juggs: oh yeah; you DID mention the XML storage. I think deferring for now is quite fine.
[05:35:51] <Bytram> juggs: my thinking was along the lines of: "Gee, it's been about 10 hours since I was last here, I wonder what's been happening at !feed"?

[05:37:12] <Bytram> juggs++
[05:37:15] <Bytram> juggs++
[05:39:05] <juggs> Bytram, I had the exact same thought earlier - a command to recall the last N hours of feeds. At the moment there is one XML blob per feed and no overarching all-feeds synopsis DB. So to implement it would mean having to parse through every single feed's XML - which is just the XML sucked from the RSS feed wrapped in some more XML guff done by the syndication script. Which notably ~I think~ doesn't have a timestamp attribute.
[05:40:20] <juggs> It was a quick way to get this stood up, but I don't think it is going to be realistically maintainable / expandable moving forward.
