[14:17:07] <janrinok> s/is/if/
[14:17:09] <exec> <janrinok> wonders if Bytram is still sleeping....
[14:26:19] <Bytram> janrinok: yes.
[14:32:02] <janrinok> lol
[14:34:45] <Bytram> "Are you asleep?" "Yes."
[14:49:49] <Bytram> I am trying to plan out my day and it's looking like IRL stuff needs a priority today.
[14:50:25] <janrinok> k - get stuck in to the chores and paper work!
[14:50:46] <Bytram> Basically, yes.
[14:52:14] <janrinok> I try not to do anything more than necessary once I have finished Friday's chores until Monday morning. There is still a lot to do with S, but I do _try_ to relax a little.
[14:53:08] <Bytram> Good. For. You!
[14:53:35] <janrinok> But, if you are happy, we can set ourselves a goal of getting you networked computers by the end of the weekend if you wish, or get back to getting the windows transfer done
[14:53:51] <Bytram> In that case, I'll trundle along on my own until Monday and help you get a much-needed break!
[14:53:56] <janrinok> s/you/your/
[14:53:58] <exec> <janrinok> But, if your are happy, we can set ourselves a goal of getting you networked computers by the end of the weekend if you wish, or get back to getting the windows transfer done
[14:54:09] <janrinok> this isn't work!
[14:54:10] <Bytram> LOL
[14:54:25] <Bytram> Oh, you are actually enjoying this?
[14:54:49] <janrinok> if I wasn't chatting with you I would be writing software - my computers are my hobby
[14:54:55] <Bytram> It *does* give you an opportunity to get some good laughs at my expense!
[14:55:02] <Bytram> ;)
[14:55:05] <Bytram> k
[14:55:09] <janrinok> oh, I was hoping you had forgotten that....
[14:55:55] <Bytram> I want you to promise me that if this becomes at all burdensome, that you will speak up and let me know. There is nothing I am doing atm that is time-critical!
[14:56:01] <Bytram> forgotten what?
[14:56:19] <janrinok> when I stop replying I am either busy or have had enough!
[14:56:25] <Bytram> k
[14:56:44] <janrinok> of course I will mention it - if it stops being fun why would I do it?
[14:59:53] <Bytram> I can't read minds, so I try to be sure by asking questions!
[15:00:01] <janrinok> fairy nuff
[15:00:11] <Bytram> brb
[15:23:19] * Bytram just had a thought. Given switching between TV inputs is not entirely convenient... maybe I should get a RPi and set it up as the sole connection to the TV and send each lappy's output to the RPi to display... Maybe using something like X Window?

It replaces the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard included with Windows XP and offers limited migration services for computers running Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP2.[2] For all versions of Windows, it does not transfer applications—only files and settings.[3]"

[18:22:53] <janrinok> sry - been away cooking and eating
[19:20:47] <Bytram> hopefully in that order!
[19:21:10] <janrinok> no, I eat it first then sit in the microwave for 15 minutes...
[19:21:32] <janrinok> I've got a great tan...
[19:22:21] * Bytram has been investigating KVM switches... have concerns about UHD 60, and the switch maintaining 'presence' so that if I switch from PC1 to PC2, PC1 thinks it still has a display connected to it.
[19:22:33] <Bytram> And glowing accolades, I'm sure!
[19:22:37] <Bytram> Even in the dark!
[19:22:57] <janrinok> lol
[19:24:29] <Bytram> Separately, I've trying to figure out how to get actual Windows an *product key" for each of the lappy's "Refurbished PC Certificae of Authenticity" hologram labels I have... and so far, no joy. :P
[19:24:36] <janrinok> I don't know much about particular brands, but of course I know what they do.
[19:24:52] <Bytram> nod nod
[19:26:17] <janrinok> sorry - I can't help on that problem. The last Windows I actually used was win2000 although I have a win7 pro disk, and a win 7 home (32 bit) but have never used them much. I only used the 32 bit for updating my GPS with maps.
[19:27:34] <janrinok> have you tried the key that I gave you? It wasn't restricted to any specific make or model
[19:27:45] <Bytram> Looks like I am going to have to return the very inexpensive ("cheap") HDMI switch I had purchased; when I switch inputs, the lappy I am switching from *appears* *to* think there is no longer a monitor attached and switches to the internal display.
[19:28:29] <janrinok> how many computers do you actually need to work on at the same time?
[19:29:31] <Bytram> I received it, yes. Thank-you! Thing is, I have THREE lappys (each with their own refurb COA sticked)... I am assuming I cannot use the same product key on all 3 different lappys?
[19:29:58] <janrinok> no, probably not
[19:31:09] <Bytram> Well, once I get Huey ported over to one of the new lappys, I guess just two. But I also have a Blu-ray player hooked up to the TV,so that would make 3 inputs... but I *could* direct-connect he Blu-ray to the TV and run the lappys through a switch.
[19:31:20] <janrinok> but I would be surprised if cmn32480 or somebody couldn't provide you with a key if necessary. Companies have already upgraded to W10 and there must be a supply of now-used W7 keys
[19:32:23] <Bytram> IIRC, the orig lappy (huey) does not behave well when it perceives the TV has 'disappeared', but the Linux lappys... *seem* to handle it okay? Not certain about that, yet.
[19:32:53] <janrinok> how many HDMI connectors are there on the rear of your big screen?
[19:33:03] <Bytram> Hmm,, unless they retained use of that Product Key in order to upgrade from Win 7 to, say, Win 10
[19:33:27] <Bytram> 3 HDMI, one of which is ARC
[19:33:27] <Bytram> =g ARC audio
[19:33:28] <systemd> https://www.arcaudio.com - Arc Audio: Home
[19:33:34] <Bytram> lol
[19:33:36] <janrinok> maybe, but it can't hurt to ask via DM
[19:33:43] <Bytram> =g ARC audio return channel
[19:33:44] <systemd> https://www.cnet.com - What is Audio Return Channel (ARC)? - CNET
[19:33:53] <Bytram> tru dat.
[19:34:49] <Bytram> Was just about to step away and prepare something to eat (why do I wait until early PM for my breakfast?)
[19:34:56] <Bytram> yes, rhetorical question.
[19:34:59] <janrinok> please just clarify something. You had 2 computers connected to 2 HDMI on the rear of the screen, but when you changed the 'watched' screen the other computer dropped out - is that correct?
[19:36:45] <Bytram> huey (old lappy; E6400, win 7 pro) set up to use dual display (or just TV), when I switch away, thnks the external display has disappeared, and then shrinks everythng down to fit on the intrnal display, and never notices when the TV is "available" again.
[19:37:09] <Bytram> IIRC, that is
[19:37:35] <janrinok> so you are switching on the screen controls?
[19:38:44] <Bytram> I am starting to get the idea to run Win 7 in a VM on linux on one of the new lappys... and send the whole display (using X Window) to, say, an RPi which would be the one connection to the TV. Other lappys, could also send their dispay to the RPi
[19:39:30] <Bytram> IIUC, the new RPi 4 can handle up to 2x 3840x2160 60p displays
[19:39:42] <janrinok> I'm not sure how to do that (yet) but it sounds entirely possible
[19:40:27] <Bytram> Back some 15-20 years ago, I used to do that all the time sending output from Sun servers to a local Linux PC.
[19:40:56] <Bytram> somethng about setting up the "display" variable
[19:41:09] <janrinok> that is 2 HDMI outputs, you would have to stream the video in via a network and I'm not sure how we would switch that yet
[19:41:41] <janrinok> I'm sure it can be done but I've never tried to do it
[19:41:47] <Bytram> yes, it would require my getting networking to work between all the systems.
[19:41:51] <Bytram> k
[19:42:13] <janrinok> networking is easy - but go grab some b'fast/lunch. I've got to go in 15 mins anyway
[19:44:47] <Bytram> Ahh, np. Enjoy the rest of the day and thanks for being a sounding board for me to bounce my ideas off of!
[19:44:47] <Bytram> afk; biab
[19:45:05] <janrinok> cu tomorrow
[19:53:54] <janrinok> what is the rough cost of the KVMs that you have been looking at?
[19:57:16] <janrinok> because the ones that I keep finding when I search are more expensive than buying a second screen. I have 2 screens side-by-side, with desktops using separate keyboards and mice. But your use case is different from mine.
[19:58:40] <janrinok> I'll admit that I not running 4k screens though, just 1920x1080.
[20:43:13] <cmn32480> heathen
[21:55:15] <Bytram> janrinok: on he order of $100 for a switch. The main thrust of this whole effort which started way-back-when was that I wanted a *big* screen; bought a UHD 3840x2560 TV to use as a monitor... and I want to actually *use* it. =)
