[01:52:36] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[02:49:26] <Bytram> hmm, WRT new user messaging system on dev...
[02:49:33] <Bytram> I wonder if I can send a message to myself?
[02:50:13] <cmn32480> sure
[02:50:19] <cmn32480> login to your user page
[02:51:57] <Bytram> I did, and sent TWO messages to myself, but do not seem to have received them.
[02:52:04] <cmn32480> checking
[02:52:31] <cmn32480> nope
[02:52:34] <cmn32480> I dind't get mine either
[02:52:39] <Bytram> BUG!
[02:52:50] <Bytram> go ahead and say it, I dare ya!
[02:53:24] <cmn32480> you is right
[02:55:13] <Bytram> not THAT; 'Bytram broke it!'
[02:55:22] <Bytram> remember the meme!
[02:55:31] <cmn32480> nope
[02:55:44] <cmn32480> that one is themightybuzzards' fault
[02:55:48] * Bytram ponders how he's gonna test the messaging system, if he can't receive his own messages.
[02:56:08] <Bytram> then again, how can I trust that the messae I received (when sent to myself) are in the same state as when I send 'em to someone else?
[02:56:21] <Bytram> yeah, gotta agree on that one
[02:56:33] <cmn32480> requires multiple people to test properly
[02:56:45] <cmn32480> let me know how (if) I can help
[02:57:43] <Bytram> I've got another nick on dev, IIRC -- I can use a different browser logged in as that nick (I think)
[02:58:05] <cmn32480> i know
[02:58:10] <cmn32480> check the messages for both
[03:00:00] <Bytram> yep, I have a bytram on dev, too.
[03:00:07] <cmn32480> i know
[03:00:15] <Bytram> for both? both what?
[03:00:19] <cmn32480> both accounts
[03:00:22] <cmn32480> check the messages
[03:00:28] <cmn32480> :-)
[03:00:29] <Bytram> oh. doh.
[03:00:45] * Bytram just finished working 6 days straight and is not his most alert self
[03:00:47] <cmn32480> I can speak slower if it helps
[03:01:14] <Bytram> m u c h a p p r e c i a t e d ! ! !
[03:01:18] <cmn32480> lol
[03:06:11] <Bytram> hrm, I (martyb on dev) just sent a message to Bytram, but I don't see it in my messages
[03:06:39] <cmn32480> i sent poo earlier to both. did you get those?
[03:06:53] <cmn32480> and keep in mind that the script to delivere messages runs every X amoutn of time
[03:07:25] <Bytram> oh. didn't know about the delay in message sending... just swell.
[03:07:49] <cmn32480> works the same way with messages for tings like moderation
[03:08:26] <cmn32480> TMB has a script hat he runs to make it deliver
[03:09:21] <Bytram> Oh? Oh. Ewwwww.
[03:09:52] <cmn32480> it is the same script that gets called for the actual message delivery, but he runs it manually to force the delivery
[03:10:39] <Bytram> I'd *never* have guessed that, thought it (kind of) makes sense.
[03:11:03] * cmn32480 waits for the /sarcasm tag
[03:11:42] <Bytram> none intended.
[03:12:08] <Bytram> just, I'd think this would be such a rare thing to do, that it would be a synchronous action.
[03:12:38] <Bytram> I write msg, hit 'send', whatever code that drops a msg into the user's message area should 'fire' and send the message
[03:13:34] <cmn32480> it's on a timer
[03:13:55] <cmn32480> think about it
[03:14:02] <cmn32480> how many comments per day do we get?
[03:14:14] <cmn32480> a few hundred per day?
[03:14:20] <cmn32480> and how many moderations
[03:14:33] <cmn32480> now scale that up.
[03:15:02] <cmn32480> think about how it would be if that script fired for every comment that is a reply, and every moderation.
[03:15:14] <cmn32480> scale that to /. size
[03:15:32] <cmn32480> that might be somewhat resourceintensive
[03:43:28] <Bytram> but, why fire a script? there's no need to make it asynchronous. Doing it in batches seems to be no less work that doing it as it happens.
[04:14:04] <cmn32480> remember, it is perl.
[04:14:11] <cmn32480> I think EVERYTHING is a script
[04:14:23] <cmn32480> and how often will the message delivery script have to run?
[04:19:39] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[04:20:32] <Bytram|away> I was under the impression that it was a daemon that would periodically wake up, do some work, and then go back to sleep.
[04:21:04] <Bytram|away> I am quite probably mistaken, but that is my sense of how things work from what I've seen about how things behave.
[04:21:11] <Bytram|away> and with that... g'night!
