[00:32:31] -!- anothernick [anothernick!~anotherni@926-0-602-681.hosted-by-worldstream.net] has joined #governance
[00:32:40] <anothernick> when is the
[00:32:51] <anothernick> next governance committee meeting?
[00:39:07] -!- anothernick has quit [Quit: Client closed]
[01:22:19] <schestowitz[TR]> 90% or more of the users in irc are known
[01:22:23] <schestowitz[TR]> they will get voice
[01:22:33] <schestowitz[TR]> even if they are not authenticated
[01:22:48] <schestowitz[TR]> the rest -- probationary
[01:22:59] <schestowitz[TR]> we dealt with similar abuse for years
[01:23:09] <schestowitz[TR]> also k-line netblocks used by the abuser
[01:23:34] <schestowitz[TR]> as for doxxing, report to the authorities
[02:02:09] <ted-ious> How are new users going to report problems with the website if they don't get voice?
[02:02:53] <ted-ious> And if you k-line netblocks then a spammer can get large parts of the internet banned automatically.
[02:47:55] <schestowitz[TR]> it is a _temporary_ tradeoff when people exploit your openness to break in and vandalise
[02:59:22] -!- anotherone [anotherone!~anotheron@852-4-228-683.hosted-by-worldstream.net] has joined #governance
[03:00:49] -!- anotherone has quit [Client Quit]
[03:09:33] <ted-ious> When does it stop?
[03:10:32] <schestowitz[TR]> when RoI is low
[03:25:39] <ted-ious> When return on investment is low?
[03:26:24] <ted-ious> I don't understand what that has to do with irc or users giving feedback on the website.
[03:27:20] <ted-ious> Sorry if I'm being dense but I'm just a news reader and submitter who likes to type to other people on the internet.
[04:40:28] <chromas> This isn't a channel for reporting though
[04:40:58] <schestowitz[TR]> the trolls does classic "poison the mind"
[04:41:05] <schestowitz[TR]> *troll
[04:41:16] <schestowitz[TR]> that's the RoI
[04:41:30] <schestowitz[TR]> one person doing /ignore is ignoring the issue
[04:41:54] <schestowitz[TR]> speaking from personal experience here...
[04:52:28] -!- Julian [Julian!~Julian@74.63.ssl.wnj] has joined #governance
[05:19:58] <ted-ious> chromas: Right I was speaking in general.
[05:20:12] <ted-ious> I thought that's what the discussion was about.
[05:21:20] <chromas> We could +rm all the chans except for #help and #soylent though
[06:34:44] -!- Julian has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[07:17:15] <janrinok> This IS the channel that most people come to when they want to report problems. This is the one that the various documents refer to as the place to gather when the site goes down.
[07:21:06] <janrinok> chromas, I see no problem with +rm on every channel except for this one, #governance and #help, but that will not solve any perceived problems. I don't know who we are supposed to report an anonymous spammer who is switching VPNs to - so that suggestion is not going to fly at all. I don't have a problem with spammers here. Most people know who he is and are not affected by what he says.
[07:45:58] <janrinok> damn - I printed those comments on the WRONG channel. This is for discussions on Governance.
[07:50:21] -!- kolie has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.8.2 - https://znc.in]
[07:50:34] -!- kolie [kolie!~kolie@208.91.qqu.m] has joined #governance
[07:51:18] <schestowitz[TR]> janrinok: thanks for taking the time to respond
[07:51:33] <schestowitz[TR]> regardless of your feelings on the matter, the methods will be:
[07:51:43] <schestowitz[TR]> upset the most critical or productive person
[07:51:51] <schestowitz[TR]> like NCommander in the old days
[07:52:04] <schestowitz[TR]> then move on to the next... and the next after that
[07:57:32] <janrinok> there is NO simple solution. The effort required cannot be justified. There are alternative ways of defeating this problem. I have to say that discussing it in public is NOT helping matters.
[07:58:52] <janrinok> We are already receiving submissions - probably from the spammer - quoting YOUR comments here on IRC.
[07:59:09] <janrinok> You are being accused of being another spammer.
[07:59:34] <schestowitz[TR]> that'sthe cost of tacklign the issue
[07:59:34] <janrinok> We can always discuss this in a PM
[07:59:37] <schestowitz[TR]> in the long run
[08:00:11] <janrinok> My first priority is the site itself, not IRC.
[08:00:16] <schestowitz[TR]> i know
[08:01:03] <janrinok> I am not discussing it further here. It is the wrong channel, and it is not helping us.
[08:01:15] <schestowitz[TR]> thanks, i will respect this wishh
[08:01:29] <janrinok> PM me if you wish
