[00:09:37] -!- AzumaHazuki [AzumaHazuki!~hazuki@the.end.of.time] has joined #editorial
[01:06:56] <Bytram> Fnord666: !!
[01:07:00] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: o/
[01:07:06] <AzumaHazuki> o/
[01:07:13] * Bytram start 2nding stories
[01:07:17] <Bytram> how ya be?
[01:07:22] * AzumaHazuki flops, suspects wearing a mask is giving her hypoxia and affecting her judgment
[01:07:43] <Bytram> Who *was* that masked [wo]man?
[01:07:54] <Bytram> I dunno, but he left this silver bullet.
[01:08:53] * Bytram wears a mask when he need to go out. Notices a distinct reduction in air flow.
[01:09:24] <AzumaHazuki> it's really getting to me. i've been having nightmares about people burning to death or suffocating
[01:10:33] <Bytram> Maybe get a cannula and a backpack O2 tank?
[01:10:44] * Bytram is not entirely joking
[01:12:27] <AzumaHazuki> this is affecting my judgment and making me feel half-asleep
[01:13:08] <Bytram> that's not so good. esp wth the kind of work you do... hey, wait. what happened with your covid-19-claiming cow-orker?
[01:18:18] <AzumaHazuki> still out, still awaiting test results
[01:18:53] <AzumaHazuki> the lead pharmacist is pissed. he said apparently she called him and spoke to the manager as well as asking the jr. pharmacist to go home, like trying to get one to say yes and play him/her off the others
[01:19:17] <AzumaHazuki> he explicitly analogized this to a kid asking both parents for a cookie and when one says yes and the other says no, saying the first one gave permission
[01:19:28] <Bytram> So... they are still having you work, and hoping things don't go sideways if she actually does test positive?
[01:20:00] * Bytram had a much younger brother growing up... saw it attempted more than once.
[01:20:01] <AzumaHazuki> if she does, we're ALL out for 2 weeks and probably they'll have to hire some kind of professionals to disinfect the entire pharmacy
[01:20:06] <AzumaHazuki> also inentory is due on 1 May :D
[01:20:11] <Bytram> By then parents had wised up. Rarely worked.
[01:20:24] <Bytram> hoo boy.
[01:20:33] <AzumaHazuki> yeah. the timing is incredible
[01:20:58] <AzumaHazuki> i offered to work Sunday if he'd pick me up and drop me off (no buses) but he said he'll be okay alone on a Sunday in the middle of a stay-at-home-order
[01:21:11] <AzumaHazuki> ...so yes, i was trying to cadge another 8 hours of overtime. can't blame a girl for trying.
[01:22:28] <Bytram> Were you mostly trying to get the OT, or mostly trying to be helpful?
[01:22:35] <AzumaHazuki> both
[01:22:46] <AzumaHazuki> which is to say, I'm the only tech who really works worth a damn
[01:22:50] <AzumaHazuki> and i need money
[01:23:03] <Bytram> thathonest.
[01:23:08] <Bytram> 'sfat fingers
[01:23:15] <Bytram> that's honest.
[01:23:40] <Bytram> Honesty is "The absence of the intent to deceive\."
[01:23:47] <AzumaHazuki> yeah, i have a real problem with lying: I can't do it. at least, not to any workable, useful extent
[01:24:02] <Bytram> likewise
[01:24:04] <AzumaHazuki> i've got no small talk either
[01:24:32] <AzumaHazuki> boss says "we all bring different things to the table," and he is the ONLY person i would tolerate that kind of content-free corp-speak from without at least a snort of contempt
[01:24:54] <AzumaHazuki> it's true i'm not the best with customers, but i actually have the best phone voice and do well enough with them
[01:24:59] <Bytram> It comes and goes for me. I find it easiest to chat with others when I am genuinely interested in how things are for them. The questions and replies seem to come much much easier.
[01:25:26] <Bytram> phonevoice++
[01:25:26] <Bender> karma - phonevoice: 1
[01:25:31] <AzumaHazuki> same. but mostly, under so much stress and fear all the damn time, i do not give a fuck. especially not about the selfish ones, or the self-destructive ones
[01:25:48] <AzumaHazuki> i wanna spit every time some asshole comes through the drivethrough sucking on a cancer stick to pick up a COPD inhaler
[01:26:03] <AzumaHazuki> like fuck you, no, go and die of emphysema and save the medicare funds for people who deserve them
[01:26:36] <Bytram> think of going an entire day or two without eating anything.
[01:26:59] <AzumaHazuki> i've done that before, usually not voluntarily
[01:27:15] <Bytram> nod nod
[01:27:42] <Bytram> now imagine being given a large bag of potato chips, poured into a big bowl.
[01:27:50] <Bytram> Hard to resist.
[01:28:00] * AzumaHazuki takes a potato chip...and eats it!
[01:28:03] <Bytram> Then once started, try and stop after 6 chips.
[01:28:26] <Bytram> that's what addiction *feels* like.
[01:28:31] <AzumaHazuki> i am a potato fiend, like any good gopnitsa. i will eat the entire bowl
[01:28:39] <AzumaHazuki> breakfast is sometimes boiled cubed potatoes
[01:28:51] <Bytram> Brain *knows* "don't do that!"
[01:29:00] <Bytram> Instincts say "Let me at it!"
[01:30:01] <Bytram> growing up, dinner almost always had a big heaping helping of potatoes, and then some veggies, and some meat (chicken. hambug, turkey, pork, whatever)
[01:30:17] <Bytram> but almost always with the potatoes!
[01:30:45] <AzumaHazuki> i freaking love them
[01:31:04] <AzumaHazuki> i could seriously eat like 1/3 of my day's calories in some variant of taters every day
[01:31:10] <Bytram> ditto
[01:31:32] <Bytram> now that you mention it, today would have been perfect for some baked potatoes... a bit nippy out there.
[01:31:34] <AzumaHazuki> hilariously, this is the one thing my girlfriend and i disagree on: she hates potatoes, eggplants, and bitter melon
[01:31:39] <AzumaHazuki> she may be a supertaster for bitter
[01:31:50] <Bytram> Hmmm, how long does it take? it's not *too* late!
[01:32:19] <Bytram> I like spuds. Ixnay on eggplant and melons
[01:32:29] <AzumaHazuki> i like just about everything
[01:32:42] <AzumaHazuki> partly because that's bare survival for me
[01:32:49] <Bytram> you're fortunate.
[01:33:03] <Bytram> that you like most anything, that is/
[01:33:10] <AzumaHazuki> i kind of have to
[01:34:04] <Bytram> asparagus, for example, just brings up my gag reflex. Like looking at a head of lettuce that hid in the back of the fridge for a couple weeks and is a bit 'runny'
[01:34:53] <Bytram> OTOH, I actually *like* peas, carrots, beets, and most kinds of beans (even an occasional lima bean!)
[01:35:49] <Bytram> Now I'm getting hungry and going to check on making some baked potatoes. biab
[01:35:50] * AzumaHazuki will eat them all
[01:35:57] <Bytram> MINE!
[01:36:00] <AzumaHazuki> LOL
[01:36:00] <Bytram> ;)
[01:36:17] <AzumaHazuki> i has taters at home :3 it's okay. i don't eat after 3:30 PM or so anyway
[01:36:34] <Bytram> actually, I have plenty of spuds atm, if you were here, I'd happily share!
[01:38:17] <Bytram> 445-60 minutes.
[01:38:20] <Bytram> =(
[01:38:27] * Bytram is not willing to wait that long.
[01:38:35] <Bytram> will have tom do somethign else for dinenr
[01:38:40] <Bytram> afk biab
[01:38:46] <AzumaHazuki> taters boil nice and fast, 20 mins maybe
[01:38:59] <AzumaHazuki> cube 'em and boil 'em, then drizzle with pepper, salt, a little oil, and some dill
[01:39:42] <chromas> You can nuke 'em a bit first. Shave off ten or so minutes of baking for each one in the microwave oven
[01:44:43] <AzumaHazuki> i had no idea, cool.
[01:45:07] <chromas> Still put it in the oven for a bit to get the crispiness
[01:45:29] * AzumaHazuki cubed a huge sweet potato and boiled it for breakfast this morning
[01:46:24] <chromas> Noice
[01:59:38] <Bytram> Some people live to eat... I eat to live. For me, it's something that takes up time and gets in the way of other things I'd rather be doing.
[02:08:36] <chromas> You just need some spices and stuff.
[02:10:58] <Bytram> don't get me wrong, a properly prepared filet mignon with a nice baked potato... Yum!
[02:11:23] <AzumaHazuki> i have...issues with food. it's only my insane willpower that keeps me at a normal, healthy weight
[02:12:10] <AzumaHazuki> bluntly, my brain screams at me to eat anything in sight because it doesn't know if the bad times will return. it's been louder than usual lately too. i can overrule it, but it's just another layer of stress
[02:12:22] <AzumaHazuki> and this is something none of my co-workers understand apparently
[02:14:21] <Bytram> okay, that noise in your head about food? That's what's in a person's head who is trying to stop smoking. Both hear screaming "Get it NOW!!!"
[02:15:52] <AzumaHazuki> yeah, i'm not entirely unsympathetic. but partly so. they chose to do this to themselves, there are quitting tools that are cheaper than smoking...
[02:16:32] <AzumaHazuki> i know very well that certain chemicals physically rewire the brain by changing receptor expression and number
[02:17:36] <Bytram> Quitting when one has just started is not so hard. After a few years, much more difficult. And after decades of what used to be a social activity -- something to do when you were out with friends, for example -- becomes well nigh impossible.
[02:18:12] <AzumaHazuki> these people don't even make the fucking effort. sorry but it's just not comparable. my brain tries to get me to eat a lot out of trauma, and not even irrational fear, given how my life has been
[02:18:34] <AzumaHazuki> i never listen to it, but it's because i've got a will you could bend steel around
[02:19:23] <Bytram> rewiring. yep.. Quitting smoking is like pulling out the now-main-conductor cables and trying to rely on atrophied and corroded old connectors that kinda remain around there someplace.
[02:19:59] <Bytram> You, strong willed? I hadn't noticed. ;)
[02:21:31] <AzumaHazuki> i have to be. it's the only reason i'm still alive. better people than me suffered less than me and killed themselves, and i know because a couple of them were friends
[02:21:50] <Bytram> ::very sad face::
[02:22:45] <AzumaHazuki> and the incredibly scary part is, compared to a hell of a lot of people in say India or China or especially Africa, i still had it easy
[02:23:10] <AzumaHazuki> if we could hear this world's psychic screams we'd be shattered, let alone just deafened
[02:24:25] <Bytram> Depends on where our strengths and weaknesses are. I regularly read things in stories to post to this site that the vast majority of my acquaintances would be lost after the first or second sentence. OTOH, some of them could haul around cinder blocks all day and barely break a sweat.
[02:25:19] * Bytram is hyper empathic... can often sense other people's feelings so strongly, I sometimes think I am feeling it more than they are.
[02:26:33] <Bytram> So, I am grateful that there is some place that this self-professed nerd can put his energies and abilities that are helpful to others... and glad for those who do the things I'd be unable to.
[02:26:38] <Bytram> teamwork++
[02:26:38] <Bender> karma - teamwork: 233
[02:26:45] <AzumaHazuki> ugh, me too. can't shut it off. it's one reason i hate the customer service aspects of this job
[02:29:41] <Bytram> I found when working retail if I can start things off with a genuine "Hi!" and a smile, then maybe crack a (bad) joke about the weather or the local often-losing sports team... it helps set them at ease. Remember, especially in your line of work, they are often afraid, though some live by the credo that the best defense is a good offense. Be the first to hit 'em hard.
[02:31:18] <Bytram> Did you hear about the guy who fell off the 20-foot-tall ladder? Fortunately he wasn't hurt... he was only on the 2nd step.
[02:32:45] <Bytram> Did you hear what the French farmer said to the veterinarian who restored his female horses sight? Mare See!
[02:34:37] <Bytram> I had maybe a couple or three dozen that I would use on different occasions. Just because I used the very same joke an hour ago, *this* customer doesn't know that, so it's new to *them*.
[02:36:00] <Bytram> And, if I try a joke and it falls flat, "Well, guess I won't try *THAT* one again!" Groan out loud at myself (and basically inviting them to join me) and then just go on about whatever it was I was doing.
[02:36:40] <chromas> That's okay, we all come in with the same joke about $thing being free because there's no price tag and you get to hear it over and over!
[02:38:22] <AzumaHazuki> you know, when this virus starts reaming out the South and killing off tens of thousands of Trumptards a day, i'll start feeling...not better, but vindicated
[02:39:02] <AzumaHazuki> like, reassured that at least the laws of fucking physics and biology still hold no matter how many corrupt insane fucking death cultists there are trying to say otherwise
[02:46:01] <Bytram> My experience has been that my actions speak louder than words. I did Software Test/QA for decades. Rather than engage in one-ups-man-ship in yelling and trying to force my point, I would just explain things, and explain how I came to that conclusion, based on my experience. I tried to find common experiences so that they could better understand the connections I was making. When starting off on a new job or contract, it'd be the
[02:46:02] <Bytram> same thing all over again. And once more, I just allowed a body of evidence build up. That when I predicted a problem they were trying to dismiss was not as benign as they thought... and then it would blow up. I didn't need to throw it in their face "I TOLD YOU SO!". Didn't take too long for me to develop a reputation that when I spoke up, you really might want to listen. Sure, I was wrong on ocassion, but I was right often enough
[02:46:02] <Bytram> that you ignored me at your own peril.
[02:47:06] <Bytram> Annd, the run keeps rising earlier and earlier. As it is, I should prolly have been in bed an hour ago. Oh well.
[02:47:30] <Bytram> Thanks for the chat! I hope you sleep well!
[02:47:46] <Bytram> have a great night everybody!
[02:48:48] <AzumaHazuki> it's out of our hands now. i only hope people get exactly what they voted for
[02:48:57] <AzumaHazuki> there is going to be a housing crisis in Hell real soon now...
[03:12:37] <Fnord666> Chromas, thanks for tweaking the cite command to bold the paper title. I appreciate it.
