[23:00:37] -!- spiraldancing has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
[18:30:16] <janrinok> laters - in fact tomorrow!
[18:28:59] <Bytram> laters, everybody!
[18:28:50] * Bytram stayed up too late last night; thinks a nap might be a good idea.
[18:28:32] <Bytram> is raining, has been for a couple hours, forecast to continue for several more...
[18:14:00] <Bytram> was starting to feel a bit claustrophobic!
[18:13:41] * Bytram just closed about 30 tabs
[18:13:30] <janrinok> yup
[18:13:26] <Bytram> Woo Hoo!
[18:13:21] <Bytram> more bogroll?
[18:13:07] <janrinok> ah, its a joint discovery - they have both submitted papers!
[18:12:27] <janrinok> beg to differ - University of Rostock - but what the hell, if the Germans want to fight over it, let 'em

[16:51:04] <janrinok> don't worry, carny will be along soon to cheer us all up with reports of unverifiable doom and gloom
[16:50:57] <AzumaHazuki> in all seriousness, i am a bit constipated from mostly eating rice, pasta, and such. should probably have more oatmeal
[16:50:38] <Bytram> lol!

[16:49:30] <janrinok> lol
[16:49:12] <AzumaHazuki> oi, oi, i wasn't hoarding bogroll
[16:49:12] <Bytram> Though that might be good for my physical health, over the years I've gained some social skills and find that I am actually missing the usual interaction with people that I once enjoyed.
[16:49:01] * exec tragically confiscates a +1 mace of charmin extra-soft from AzumaHazuki
[16:48:59] <janrinok> ~gday AzumaHazuki - stay safe
[16:48:59] <AzumaHazuki> that has never happened. and i wonder if it means i'm going to die then
[16:48:49] <AzumaHazuki> what bothers me most about this personally is that psychic wall I run into trying to think about anything more than 3 months out or so
[16:48:07] <Bytram> except for laundry, taking out the trash, and a couple other similar activities, I could pretty-much stay in my apartment (living alone) for at least a month and probably close to two.
[16:47:19] <Bytram> in some respects, same here.
[16:46:04] <AzumaHazuki> it occurs to me i basically live like a quarantine patient to begin with
[16:45:51] <AzumaHazuki> this actually changes very little for me
[16:44:10] <Bytram> it's a new world for most folk -- way outside their normal day-to-day activities and routines. Puts everyone on edge as they find themselves doing what seems on the surface to be the exact same thing, but there's a whole swirl of *different* intermixed with it all. That tends to frighten most folk, and they tend to behave accordingly.
[16:42:00] <AzumaHazuki> plus, everything goes pure blank white when i try and think about anything past June
[16:41:46] <AzumaHazuki> i've been getting nasty flashes in dreams about my hometown...pop on a news website to see NYC is getting hit hard
[16:41:25] <Bytram> {{{ hugs }}}
[16:41:12] <AzumaHazuki> am grateful to get one day off a week, but we're short-staffed and i'm not sleeping well
[16:41:11] <Bytram> Now that would be a trick to get paid whilst sleeping...
[16:40:43] <AzumaHazuki> i almost fell asleep halfway through my shift yesterday
[16:40:19] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: Welcome aboard! How are you holding up?
[16:37:14] -!- AzumaHazuki [AzumaHazuki!~hazuki@the.end.of.time] has joined #editorial
[16:28:42] <Bytram> hmm
[16:28:37] <Bytram> janrinok: I am writing up a comment addressing that atm.
[16:28:20] <Bytram> yes.
[16:18:26] <janrinok> The page you found was NOT from an admin - there is no top bar menu for example - but the filters _are_ present. Today they are not.
[16:16:51] <janrinok> Comparing that to what is being displayed today, the filters are missing. Now I'm not sure why the community would want to see them, but if they do then they do. However, something has happened between the date of the example page you found and today, because the page format is different.
[16:15:27] <janrinok> Bytram, I'm not convinced that is it. That variable is intended to display on the front page when the submissions queue is running low. Ari was discussing 'filters' although I accept that he could be using incorrect terminology. I do not think - in fact I know - that the two things are different. If you look at the link that you found in the wayback search the filters _are_ shown at the top of the page
[15:58:40] <Bytram> That user could then sit there, occasionally refreshing the main page, until they saw their desired story appear, quickly cut-and-paste in their pre-prepared comment... and voila!
[15:57:34] <exec> └─ 13SoylentNews Comments | Site News -- A Potpourri

[15:57:32] <Bytram> Heh! https://soylentnews.org
[15:07:36] <Bytram> brb
[15:07:34] <Bytram> If there are only a few items visible in the sub queue, one can reasonably select one, invest the time to write up a comment, and know that when it disappeared from the subs queue, the story was due to come out in the not-to-distant-future.
[15:05:59] <Bytram> It also gave them a "louder" megaphone from which to push their agenda
[15:05:35] <Bytram> My guess is that there was a time on Slashdot when someone would, moments after a story went live, have a comment ready-and-raring to go. Being first posted, it got top visibility, and if it seemed to have some degree of "value", would often garner a large number of upvotes, thus boosting their karma.
[15:03:33] <Bytram> So, it apparently functions as designed.
[15:03:05] <Bytram> and there are curently 15 Submissions in the submissions queue
