[01:03:30] <Bytram> .
[01:03:57] * Bytram Just submitted another story to be appended to the Coronovirus Roundup story.
[01:08:19] <chromas> Why not just paste it in?
[01:08:28] <chromas> Tryin' to get those free karmas, eh
[01:08:55] <Bytram> Would prefer to have another editor involved in the decision whether or not to use it.
[01:09:55] <chromas> well it's already queued. I say stuff as much as you can into the queued story :)
[01:10:37] * chromas waits 45 minutes for the page to load
[01:13:25] <chromas> I don't see an Original Sub link for stormwyrn's bit
[01:14:10] <Bytram> hold on... dealing with an... irksome 2nding of a story
[01:14:12] * chromas makes a couple edits
[01:14:12] <Bytram> almost done
[01:20:45] <Bytram> =g kora wikipedia
[01:20:45] <systemd> https://en.wikipedia.org(instrument) - Kora (instrument) - Wikipedia
[01:21:14] <Bytram> nearly done
[01:21:15] <chromas> shaved
[01:21:29] <chromas> I added the link to source #5
[01:21:59] <Bytram> Ohhhh! Great catch!
[01:22:38] * Bytram wonders how many other coronavirus stories he can find and submit so that they, too, can be merged in?
[01:23:06] <chromas> Could just paste a bunch of links
[01:23:54] <chromas> If you quoted them all, you'd probably break the database
[01:24:12] * Bytram ponders the opportunity
[01:24:37] <Bytram> given how long my missing journal article investigation was, I suspect it would take quite a few more.
[01:26:09] <chromas> http://chromas.0x.no
[01:26:10] <systemd> ^ 03🔎 coronavirus - feedctl
[01:26:37] <chromas> that's ~500 from just the last couple days
[01:26:47] <chromas> some are dupes though
[01:27:41] * Bytram is not understanding your query to feedctl and thus how you arrived at your conclusion
[01:27:53] <Bytram> http://chromas.0x.no
[01:27:55] <systemd> ^ 03🔎 coronavirus - feedctl
[01:28:17] <chromas> the 500 most recent stories in the feed mentionng "coronavirus"
[01:28:18] <Bytram> Could I not say, now, that there were nearly 10k stories?
[01:28:45] <chromas> Submit them all for merging :D
[01:29:03] <Bytram> IIUC, you asked for up to 500 stories, but how would you know if it found, say, only 10?
[01:29:59] <chromas> it doesn't show a count, you're right. but it only returns results for less than two days, so there's got to be more. I should add a counter though
[01:31:07] * chromas waits 5 minutes for an sql query
[01:31:18] <Bytram> http://chromas.0x.no
[01:31:21] <systemd> ^ 03🔎 abc123xyz456 - feedctl
[01:31:27] <chromas> there's an upper limit o' 500 though
[01:31:27] <Bytram> LOL!
[01:31:46] <chromas> select count(*) from newses where title like '%coronavirus%';
[01:31:49] <chromas> 2224
[01:32:26] <Bytram> Then I would like to think it would report that fact back to the user in some manner.
[01:33:24] <Bytram> backing up for a bit, sounds like you have another wonderfully helpful tool under development!
[01:33:38] <chromas> nah, that's the oldest one :D
[01:34:20] <chromas> if you tag on a ?sn_sub then it gives a link on each story to populate the submission form with the story though
[01:34:32] <Bytram> Can't tell you how much it helps to be able to get the actual URL for a story that is behind redirection, or to get the CITE for a story, and I'm increasingly using your story text extractor page.
[01:38:47] <chromas> Aw, shucks
[01:38:57] * chromas looks down and lightly kicks a rock
[01:43:41] <chromas> oh yeah, it doesn't say so, but you can click the headers to expand the summaries
[01:51:38] * Bytram sees the words, but is kinda wiped out atm and doesn't grok the meaning. :(
[01:52:09] <chromas> Better get to sleep then
[01:52:34] * Bytram did take a ~2 hour nap this afternoon...
[01:54:11] <Bytram> We had a rather impressive low pressure system just come through our area... got as low as 28.67 in Hg or 971.1 millibar
[01:54:34] <Bytram> Has slowly worked its way back to 29.06 in Hg.
[01:56:00] <Bytram> The lower the barometer, the more one's aching muscles. old bone injuries/breaks, etc. try to make themselves known. :/
[01:56:44] <Bytram> time for a short break... back in a few minutes

[14:55:06] <spiraldancing> Damn ... missed the joke, just in time for the "lol".
[14:55:20] <spiraldancing> ~gday janrinok
[14:55:25] <spiraldancing> ...
[14:55:29] <spiraldancing> ...
[14:55:31] <janrinok> you were doing your usual log-in dance between usernames and
[14:55:36] <spiraldancing> (stupid bots)
[14:55:52] <janrinok> lots of bots seem to be dead
[14:56:02] <janrinok> how are you today?
[14:56:08] <spiraldancing> This is the kind of thing that leads to Skynet.
[14:56:39] <spiraldancing> I'm better. Still sick, but not so much that I can continue to claim incapacity.
[14:57:10] <janrinok> you just couldn't be bothered to go to all the trouble of collecting your sickness benefits....
[14:58:17] <janrinok> you are risking the loss of all that previous editors have fought for - they stood together on the battlements to protect the rights of editors to come, those whose names they did not know...
[14:58:22] <spiraldancing> ... too sick to.
[14:58:38] <janrinok> fair enough...
[14:58:41] <spiraldancing> Irony, right?
[14:59:23] <spiraldancing> In the US, for decades, the Republican healthcare plan has been mockingly referred to as the "Don't Get Sick" plan.
[14:59:33] <spiraldancing> SN's is clearly better than that, at least.
[14:59:35] <janrinok> I can understand that
[17:31:11] * Bytram glances over, sees spiraldancing over in the corner feeling unwell, brings a big bowl of soup, and then takes a few steps back (just to keep safe from catching anything =)
[17:32:59] <Bytram> FWIW, I have found that when I have any kind of sinus problems or a cold or something similar, a couple quarts of really spicy hot-and-sour soup seems to help clear things up.
[17:33:56] <Bytram> Hope this passes quickly for you!
[17:34:41] * Bytram has just recently gotten over the worst of some kind of bug that had been going around and that lingered for about 5-6 weeks. Sure hope yours passes quicker!
[18:21:19] * Bytram just downloaded a newer version of his IRC client... will be away for a few minutes while installing the upgrade.

[19:45:25] <janrinok> chromas always plays dirty on a Saturday evening...
[19:45:25] <spiraldancing> FTR, IRC can blow me.
[19:45:50] <chromas> You can set hexchat to store your password and identify for you
[19:45:55] <spiraldancing> So ... now y'all know my Top-Secret password?
[19:45:59] <chromas> Yes
[19:46:15] <spiraldancing> This is what comes from using multiple language keyboard layouts ...
[19:46:34] <chromas> It's not the worst password either, so you've got that going for you, which is nice
[19:47:04] <janrinok> it _would_ have been reasonably secure - it he hadn't written it out for us
[19:47:21] <spiraldancing> Yeah, I'm a security freak. That actually qualifies as a low-level throw-away, so no great loss.
[19:47:49] <janrinok> ah, the old covering up, I've got plenty more of them...
[19:48:32] <Bytram> I must have missed something! All I saw was *******
[19:48:43] <chromas> hunter12345?
[19:48:49] <janrinok> yes, but isn't that is password?
[19:50:45] <janrinok> gtg - it's that time again...
[19:50:57] <Bytram> laters taters!
[19:51:25] <Bytram> janrinok: Nice chatting with ya, have a great night! Give my best to S and a return hug, if you would?
[19:51:39] <janrinok> have a good one guys - bye Bytram - will do, of course
[19:51:55] <Bytram> great!
[19:51:59] <spiraldancing> yes, my password is 7 asterisks ... easy to remember.
[19:53:14] <spiraldancing> chromas: how? I've been looking for that setting since the day I stepped into the SN IRC.
[19:54:12] <Bytram> biab; making a bite to eat
[19:54:49] <chromas> I'll go look
[19:54:55] * chromas doesn't have hexchat on this puter
[19:57:48] <chromas> Ah. In your server settings (menu -> HexChat -> Network List), select your soylent network from the list and to Edit
[19:58:29] * Bytram has hexchat, but once I got set up with the ZNC bouncer, have not had to identify since then
[19:58:44] <chromas> Then at the bottm, Select SASL of Nickserv and put in your pass
[19:58:52] <chromas> SASL or Nickserv
[19:59:19] <chromas> SASL's more betterer because it auths you right away, but most people don't seem to use it I guess
[20:01:58] <spiraldancing> brb ... testing it.

[20:07:24] <spiraldancing> Ahhh, there's the correct syntax.
[20:07:31] <Bytram> spiraldancing: Was wondering how you were feeling today... if you wanted to try working on another story. I'll be mostly around for a while.
[20:08:27] <spiraldancing> Bytram, sorry, not today ... I'm already in bed for the night. Feeling better, but not good.
[20:08:33] <Bytram> no rush! Just wanted to let you know I was around and avail
[20:08:39] <spiraldancing> I did submit a story today ... my first.
[20:08:40] <Bytram> Oh, good!
[20:08:48] <Bytram> Sleep is amazing!
[20:09:01] <Bytram> Ohhh?
[20:09:08] * Bytram hurries over to look
[20:09:21] <spiraldancing> Concrete from CO2, like the Romans used to do it.
[20:10:02] <Bytram> I see it now... taking a look
[20:11:52] <spiraldancing> Still early demo phase, but concrete may one day be a net benefit for climate change.
[20:13:15] <Bytram> FYI, though there is no official rule, I can prolly count on one hand the number of times we've had a story with a *direct* link to /. Nothing against them, mind. We had a stretch where someone would submit the same story to both sites. Got interesting until we figured that out! Many claims that we "stole" their story, and vice versa. So we try to let them do their thing, and so far, they have let us do our thing.
[20:15:44] <spiraldancing> Well ... I didn't intend for the final product to include the /. link ... that seems ... crass.
[20:16:17] <spiraldancing> But since that's where I found it, seemed fair to mention that.
[20:17:01] <Bytram> No, didn't think you did! There's quite a bit of... "history" associated with this site; I thought I would use this as an opportunity to pass along.
[20:17:13] <Bytram> Appreciate the candor!
[20:19:00] <Bytram> Once you get settled in to chat, I'll introduce you to our #rss-bot channel which posts links to stories which we might find useful as a source for a story. There is also a page on our wiki that one of our bots (currently on hiatus) updated every hour or somesuch: https://wiki.soylentnews.org
[20:19:02] <systemd> ^ 03Storybot - SoylentNews
[20:19:15] <spiraldancing> Future forward ... exclude explicit /. links, or exclude stories I find there altogether?
[20:23:17] <Bytram> excellent question! Cannot give a definitive black and white answer. As rule of thumb, it might happen that they and we both happen to cover the same story, but we make no effort to publish a story that already appeared on their site. As for links to their site... if were something that strictly applied to the site (e.g. sold to yet another corporate overlord), then we would, of course, need the link. I'd say as a rule, if in doubt,
[20:23:17] <Bytram> leave it out (i.e. don't go there)
[20:23:35] <Bytram> Kinda gray-ish, I know, but I hope that helps!
[20:24:27] <chromas> It should be grayish. What color do you get when you mix our default red with their cyan theme?
[20:25:04] <Bytram> harlequin?
[20:25:16] * spiraldancing zzzzzzz...
[20:25:39] <Bytram> Have a good night!
[20:26:04] <Bytram> So, in a nutshell, I see nothing terribly egregious here, but thought you'd like to know.
